Heartsick, the Lord of the Unseelie slipped from Carterhaugh through the portal oak. He materialized into Elphyne, trembling. There was someone he missed as much as Tam missed his father, and, like Old Thomas, he was never returning—to this realm or the mortal one.

He ambled through the pristine meadows and grasslands of his grandmother’s seelie kingdom and slipped easily into the forest that bordered his own.

Much of the Sìth folk gave him the space his rank was due, especially the ones who had known and feared his grandfather, Finveara. But the unseelie creatures found Alfarinn exhausting. They made a point of glaring with beady eyes and sharp hisses whenever he passed by. He was no Finveara.

It wasn’t until he reached the marshes that Alfarinn noticed something was odd. He stopped abruptly and looked around, hoping the stillness in the damp air was only the result of his sister’s mysterious cats mid-stalk.

His grey Sìth eyes settled on a horse head bobbing in the muddy waters, with a passenger in the form of a slimy snail. This could only be one particular kelpie. The Lord of the Unseelie groaned and approached his nosy subject.

“Your grandfather would have thrown a fireball at me for spying,” Ceol teased.

The silver beast pulled himself up out of the water and shook from snout to tail. It was a miracle that his pet snail did not fly off.

Alfarinn whipped the water from his clothes with a wave of his hand. “You admit to spying?”

“Perhaps a little.”

Ceol’s horse face split into an eerie, sharp-toothed grin as his monstrous body metamorphosized into the figure of a man. The kelpie usually graced the courts in faerie form but there were times that he retreated to the cool marshes to transform into his true nature. It was a face he only showed his kin, his master, and his victims.

“I’m just curious, my lord. Why do you sulk about your holdings? Do you seek mischief? If so, I am eager to be of assistance.”

Alfarinn snickered as the smiling kelpie delicately hid his precious creature in his enchanted pocket. “Are you now? Actually, I could use a little help, Ceol.”

The kelpie pranced about, waving his arms wildly.

Alfarinn raised a hand in warning. “This will require more stealth than anything, Ceol. I will not have you mauling anyone for this task.”

The kelpie deflated and gave a resentful pout. “But I haven’t mauled anyone in ages!” he whined.

Alfarinn did his best to hide his shiver. Kelpies were forbidden from attacking other fae, but the souls of mortals were fair game. Tam fit into both categories, much to the kelpie population’s displeasure.

“What if I told you that this mischief would be wrought on a certain earthly knight? Would you be willing to play my game to be rid of him?”

The kelpie reverted back to his horse form and danced fluidly around his master. “Pretty Tam’s flesh is tantalizing, and his soul would be delicious. If you want to be rid of him, let me have him. I'll not tell a Sìth it was you.”

Alfarinn scowled, channeling his grandfather’s energy. The kelpie recoiled.

“No, Ceol. The queen would fly into a rage the likes of which we've never seen.”

The creature’s eye fixed on the Sìth lord, gleaming maliciously. “Are you afraid of her, Lord of the Unseelie?” It was a declaration more than a question, a search for weakness in the chain of command.

Alfarinn squinted and folded his arms over his chest, pulling himself up to full height. “Afraid! No. I am her grandson,” he reminded with a smug smile. “She loves kin above all else. You, on the other hand, council member or not, would do well to keep in her good graces.”

Ceol swallowed and quickly changed back into his less-intimidating configuration. “Noted.”

He looked about the marsh for a moment, perhaps weighing his choices, and fondled the poor snail in his pocket. After some moments avoiding his exasperated master, the kelpie turned and nodded his acceptance.

“So, what exactly must I do to annoy the tasty mortal boy?”

Being the daughter of the village Capuwa, or demon-priest, Amara is used to keeping mostly to herself. Influenced by the new religious practices brought in by the British Colonizers, the villagers who once respected her father’s craft have turned on the family. Yet, they all still seem to call on him whenever supernatural disturbances arise.

Now someone—or something—is viciously seizing upon men in the jungle. But instead of enlisting Amara’s father’s help, the villages have accused him of carrying out the attacks himself.

As she tries to clear her father’s name, Amara finds herself haunted by dreams that eerily predict the dark forces on her island. And she can’t shake the feeling that it’s all connected to the night she was recovering from a strange illness, and woke up, scared and confused, to hear her mother’s frantic cries: No one can find out what happened.

Amazon

Amara is the daughter of the village Capuwa, a demon-priest, and a mother who was once part of rich, influential family of the island, until she got pregnant and ran away with Amara’s father. When something starts seizing men in the jungle and harming them, the villages accuse her father of causing the attacks.

A tense, spooky tale of a young woman's inner rage against how she is treated and even lied to, where her inner demon hidden beneath her skin is let loose by one living in the dark jungle. This is a story of all women chained to their lives by men, parents and more, where sometimes the villain becomes the savior.

I gave Island Witch 5 sheep.

Ancient magic is an advantage in the battle for the modern Middle East

Here Be Jinn (Fieldwork in Mesopotamia Book 1)

by Dennis Tsarson
Genre: Contemporary Mythic Fantasy Action Adventure
Ancient and unknown forces have been unleashed in war-ravaged Iraq.

When Elliott Gildart decides to join an archeological dig in the drylands of northern Iraq, he expects a break from his monotonous job. But the discovery of an unusual and out-of-place megalithic platform turns exploration into a risky undertaking and leaves Elliott facing a future he’s not sure he’s prepared for.

Meanwhile, Neil Feaver and his cameraman, Jake Parvis, stumble upon their own strange developments while filming a documentary about Iraq’s ongoing civil war. Saved from imminent danger by a mysterious stranger, they soon learn that lost magic and mystical artifacts have fallen into the wrong hands. Now, everyone finds themselves caught in the crisis, involving coalition forces, Islamist militants, and enigmatic factions that have existed since the times of the Ancient Near East.

As terrifying forces align, can they prevent impending peril? Or will ancient magic be enough to turn the tides?

Excerpts: Here Be Jinn

At first glance, the drylands could have been mistaken for a desert. An arid and mostly lifeless landscape, they appeared to spread on and on with no end in sight. Yet when Elliott jumped out of the land cruiser, the crumbling feeling beneath his feet indicated that it was not sand but parched soil that he stood upon. He looked around the area. The terrain was uneven; many mounds of different sizes dotted the landscape, rising from the earth like boils on burnt skin.

And, of course, there was the heat. It might have been only February, but for somebody who hailed from lands of a significantly colder climate, it was unbearable. Elliott swore that had it not been for the baseball cap covering his blond head, the wall of heat would have brought him down on the ground unconscious. The door of one of the off-road vehicles opened. Mergham was the first to step out, followed by Lauren, who jumped out with her usual grace. They were then joined outside by another colleague: Mr Akhmad. A local of Iraqi Kurdistan who had met up with them in Erbil. He was some years younger than Mergham and noticeably bigger in muscle mass. He had been described as a local guide and logistics co-ordinator by Mergham, and this made him the third part of the triumvirate in charge of the dig alongside Lauren and the author himself.

Elliott was not a geography expert—he wasn’t sure if these drylands even had an official name. Yet here he was, at the end of the known world, countless miles away from the perpetual dullness of urban life and the wretched call centre. Still, though their small fleet of four-wheel-drives had brought them to the middle of nowhere, they were not just left there in the wilderness. A small camp had already been set up. He could see the pointed shapes of two dozen tents about a hundred metres away. As he had been informed, a couple of people affiliated with the dig had arrived at the site some days beforehand.

“Ladies and gentlemen!” Dr Mergham spoke after summoning all the arrivals in a ring around him. “We’ve made it! This will be our camp for the next couple of months.”

“Woo-hoo!” shouted one of the team members. This comical cry of joy was followed by a brief round of chuckling from a few others.

“Yes, I am sure you are all excited,” Mergham continued, smiling himself, “but first please give a round of applause for the man without whom you would not be seeing this camp here.” He gestured towards the man standing to his left. “Mr Akhmad!”

People clapped, and they clapped sincerely.

“Thank you,” Akhmad said, his voice laced with a strong accent, lightly bowing his head. “Thank you.”

“Perhaps you could give the team an orientation tour of this camp?” Mergham suggested.

“Of course.”

The camp was not big, but neither was the group: there were just over twenty of them. The main operations tent, a fabric pavilion, was located in the centre of the encampment; it stood out amongst its neighbours in length, width, and height. Next to it was a gazebo used for the storage of equipment. Nearby was the one for supplies, and another chosen to store finds. One was set up as a kitchen. Other than that, the campsite did not have a special plan or layout; the individual tents were pitched at random. Shower tents as well as toilet tents could be found a short distance away from the main cluster. The team were introduced to the people who were already on-site: three assistant archaeologists and the cook.

Their guided walk ended back at their vehicles’ location. Then their first assignment began; they had to unload the supplies they’d brought with them and bring them to the storage gazebo. Naturally, three people were exempt from it—it was not hard to guess who. And once this task was done, with everything out of the vehicles and sorted, they received payment…in the form of another excursion, now led by Mergham himself.

The sun was still shining far above them when they set out towards the archaeological site. Clutching a map in his hand, Leonard led them deeper into their new and unusual surroundings, this unexplored wilderness. They walked for about ten or so minutes, through flat land and mounds, until the site appeared before them.

“Here it is!” the author declared, extending his hand as he gripped the map even harder. “This is the place we’ll be excavating.”

As Neil struggled in the sandy haze, he felt the ground underneath his feet dissolve. He found himself falling, plunging into this strange sinkhole. Sand irritated his eyes, and tears blurred his vision. The continuing plunge made his heart race at an impossible rate, subjected to pressure that felt strong enough to rip it into pieces before he hit the bottom of this enormous pit.

Then a hand clasped his wrist in a grip as solid as that of a handcuff. Neil’s whole body jerked as his fall suddenly ceased.

“Got you!” a familiar voice sounded from nearby.

Neil blinked intensively until his vision recovered. He gave his surroundings a brief look. What he saw left him shocked and trembling. He was dangling in the air with Nouri’s grasp being all that that kept him from continuing his fall. The guard’s grip was tight and solid, but his position was as precarious as Neil’s. He’d braced himself against the wall of the pit, clinging to a dagger he’d implanted in the rock. The situation was dire. The dagger was not planted strongly enough to bear the weight of two men. Tremors ran through Neil’s body as the blade slid out of the wall bit by bit. He looked down; he could see the bottom of the pit far below. Not even the luckiest man in the world would survive a fall from such a height.

“What are we going to do?” Neil called out to Nouri, his raised voice edging on hysterical.

“I am going to try to make our landing as safe as possible,” the guard responded.

“How?!”

“Have faith. And don’t make any sudden movements.”

Nouri pushed back against the wall with his foot. The movement tore the blade out, sending the duo falling.

Nouri’s grasp on Neil’s wrist remained just as strong, but that brought the reporter zero comfort. He shut his eyes tightly, his heart pounding. Neil was certain that this second plunge lasted mere moments. But his mind mistook every second for a minute. He was sure that he would smash against the pit’s floor head first, yet some unknown force flipped him in the air, making him land on his feet like a cat. Still, the impact was hard. He gritted his teeth as his feet cried out in pain. Nouri’s supportive grip kept him from collapsing.

“Are you alright?” the guard asked.

“Yes,” Neil hissed through still-gritted teeth before letting go of his hand.

It took him a few more moments to steady himself. Then his gaze began to wander around the place. The pit was wide; three or four university lecture rooms would have fitted in easily. Looking above, he could not see the crack they had fallen through; it was as if the crevice that had swallowed them had been sealed again. No sunrays appeared to reach the bottom of the pit from above, yet there had to be some source of light slithering into this underground cavern through some unnoticeable holes, keeping the space relatively well illuminated.

It was bright enough to allow Neil to recognise the grotesque figure a few feet away from the duo. The thing lay sprawled on the ground. Nouri’s sword stuck out of its body in a sign of victory, but Neil found it hard to overcome the disturbing feeling that this monster might suddenly get back on its feet. He kept watching it for a while to drive away his doubts. The body did not convulse a single time, and relief washed over him.

Neil looked to the left, and what he saw astonished him. The façade of a building stood there underneath countless layers of sand, dirt, and gravel, built out of large stone slabs. The entranceway was wide enough for two people to walk in side by side; if a grown man had sat on the shoulders of one of them, a few inches would have still separated his head from the large stone block that served as the entrance’s lintel. It stood there, pulsing with enigmas. The identity of the builders, the way it had ended up deep below ground—questions kept popping up in his mind.

Nouri walked towards his vanquished foe, grabbed the sword by the hilt, and pulled it out of the corpse. On any other occasion, the blade would have been stained crimson with blood, but the steel remained spotless, as if it had just been taken out of an armoury. Neil had stopped being amazed by this point; the cavalcade of miracles that day had proven that nothing was impossible.

Within moments, the creature’s hideous form began to undergo its own type of decomposition. Flesh quickly turned into sand, and the sand evaporated into air right before Neil’s eyes.

Sword in hand, Nouri stood tense, looking in every direction, searching the place for something…or someone.

“What…the hell…was that…thing?” Neil said between breaths, pointing at the empty space where the corpse had lain.

“A daeva.” Nouri turned to him. “Or, more specifically, a desert daeva.”

Excerpt: Out Of The Way Things by Kendall McNutt (Fantasy)

Out Of The Way Things
by Kendall McNutt
September 13, 2023
Fantasy / Mythology / Folklore

For as long as Win can remember, she has seen things that no one else can see, horrific hallucinations that feel nearly real. After a decades-long parade of visions, Win rarely questions her condition. When the hallucinations arrive, she simply braces herself and waits for them to pass. Every other aspect of Win’s life is perfectly ordinary and vaguely disappointing: a mind-numbing job, mounting debt, and a lackluster social life.

It all changes for Win in a moment, when a tragic vision brings her face to face with a stranger who claims Win is more than an ordinary woman, mired in the ordinary world. Her visions, more than terrifying fantasies, reveal truths that only she can see, truths that others would do anything to control. Win’s arcane ability endangers her as much as it empowers her, and she finds herself hunted by a mysterious force. Her only option is to leave the life she knows and seek out who she is.

With more questions than answers, Win enters a world where fairy tales and folklore hide in the lives of everyday people. She must learn to live in the space between otherworldly dangers and mundane reality. Win must decide which monsters can be trusted, how she will pay her bills, and what she must learn about herself to combat an unseen enemy, an enemy whose ambition threatens the very fabric of reality.

Irreverent and comically dark, Out of the Way Things offers a fantastic world, filled with mythic beings concealed in the shadows of the ordinary. Kendall McNutt brings readers into a hyper realistic fantasy that asks us to consider the possibility that all stories are true and that nothing is impossible.

PROLOGUE

“Tell me about yourself,” the man suggested, his tone interested, his eyes fixed on the paper in his hand. The office was designed to make me nervous. Books I probably should have known lined Spartan metal cases secured to the gray walls that surrounded me. The shelves gave the impression of bars. Each item on Mr. McLaughlin’s desk rested just so, as if he had mapped the space with a compass and straightedge.

Mr. McLaughlin himself appeared to be designed with the same attention to detail. Straight posture. Precise attire. Definitively brown eyes. Well defined bone structure.

I am the master of my fate, I told myself. My mouth opened and my mind emptied. I counseled myself, Just answer the question. I smiled, “That’s a big question.” Killing time. “My undergraduate degree is in communications. I have always been interested in Marketing. I am fascinated by how consumers interact with the market and drive innovation.”

He looked up from his paper, and nodded, then jotted down some notes. I felt encouraged.

Mr. McLaughlin continued the interrogation, “Right now you are cleaning houses, why aren’t you working in a field that aligns with your training?”

Oh, no. Discouraged.

I held my smile, the confidence that shone through entirely fabricated. I said, “I would wonder that too, if I were you. I have struggled to decide what is next for me. To be honest, house cleaning is more lucrative than you might guess, so I don’t need a change for financial reasons.” Lie. “I want my next step to be the right one. When I saw this opportunity, I knew, this is something I can grow with, a company that I can represent well, and an opportunity that aligns with my values and my goals. That’s why I am here.”

He smiled. I relaxed. Fractionally. “Tell me more about that. How do you feel we align with your values and goals?”

I was prepared for this question. “I’m glad you asked that,” I began. Our eyes locked. The room shifted, and his gaze seemed to slide around in my vision. I remained still and the room moved. No! I silently protested the sudden onset of vertigo. The confidence drained from my smile, “It is clear in your advertising,” I stumbled in remembering my planned response, “That is, um,” I stumbled in remembering the question. “I’m sorry, I am suddenly dizzy.” In desperation I asked, “I’m sorry could you repeat the question?”

I could hear his response, but struggled to make meaning of his words. My eyes searched for a fixed point, something steady to which I could anchor.

Through the window, behind him, I caught sight of a car careening through an intersection. My eyes widened and my jaw fell slack. I felt the room shake as the car collided with a pole yards away from where we sat. I jumped out of my chair, knocking his coffee from his desk. Mr. McLaughlin did not turn around, he heard none of it, he saw nothing. Because, once again, nothing was happening. Another hallucination, with perfect timing.

He looked at me with worry. He looked at his coffee with regret.

“Sorry,” I gasped, “I’ve had a lot of coffee and not a lot of water.” Dehydration could excuse all manner of odd behavior. Probably not hallucinations, though, so I kept the vision to myself. I rescued his cup, now nearly empty. I looked around for anything that might absorb the coffee, seeing what I intended he handed me some tissue and together we kneeled and sopped up coffee.

“I think it’s fine now,” he said. “Someone will clean it. Are you alright, are you sure you want to continue?” There was genuine concern in his voice.

“Yes definitely,” even to me it sounded too eager. I returned to my seat. “I am very nervous, this is very important to me. I apologize. Really, I am fine.” But the room hadn’t stopped moving. I shut it out and focused on the question. The question I could not remember.

Once they started, the hallucinations often spiraled out of control. Sometimes, the hallucinations unfolded in complex, lengthy scenes. Sometimes they flashed from vision to vision, imagery jumbled together in a cacophonous tumult, as was the case this morning. During the single most important hour, of the single most important day, of my entire year.

Also per usual, the vertigo intensified. I steadied myself by placing a hand on the arm of my chair.

The interview continued.

To get things back on track Mr. McLaughlin kindly repeated the question, “Can you tell me about how our company aligns with your values?”

I have no idea, I thought. I said, “Yes, about that…”

Mr. McLaughlin smiled patiently, while behind him, on the sidewalk outside an elderly woman tripped a teenager on a skateboard. The nausea told me that it only happened in my imagination. They promptly disappeared.

I continued, “The company’s values...” I corrected, “My values…”

The car wreck returned, this time with smoke and police and a gathering crowd. I tried to look away, but the scene drew me in.

Mr. McLaughlin turned to look. Seeing nothing, his smile grew shallow. He looked at me expectantly. “I’m so sorry,” I repeated, “I’m nervous this means a lot to me.”

The candor worked in my favor, sympathy spread across his face. That was fine with me, I’d take a pity job.

And then the window shattered and I jumped backwards.

Only the window didn’t shatter, because I imagined it, and I did jump back, which might as well have been the end of the interview.

After that, the only coherent sentences I managed contained the words “I,” “am,” and “sorry,” mostly in that order.

We wrapped with the usual platitudes. He would reach out if I were invited to go on to the next stage of the process, blah, appreciate the time, blah-blah, have a nice life.

As I left the building I muttered, “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. And that’s the problem.”

The Witch and the Tsar by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore

The Witch and the Tsar
by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore
August 22, 2023
Genre: historical fantasy, magical realism, mythology

"A delicate weaving of myth and history, The Witch and the Tsar breathes new life into stories you think you know."–Hannah Whitten, New York Times bestselling author of For the Wolf

In this stunning debut novel, the maligned and immortal witch of legend known as Baba Yaga will risk all to save her country and her people from Tsar Ivan the Terrible—and the dangerous gods who seek to drive the twisted hearts of men.

As a half-goddess possessing magic, Yaga is used to living on her own, her prior entanglements with mortals having led to heartbreak. She mostly keeps to her hut in the woods, where those in need of healing seek her out, even as they spread rumors about her supposed cruelty and wicked spells. But when her old friend Anastasia—now the wife of the tsar, and suffering from a mysterious illness—arrives in her forest desperate for her protection, Yaga realizes the fate of all of Russia is tied to Anastasia’s. Yaga must step out of the shadows to protect the land she loves.

As she travels to Moscow, Yaga witnesses a sixteenth century Russia on the brink of chaos. Tsar Ivan—soon to become Ivan the Terrible—grows more volatile and tyrannical by the day, and Yaga believes the tsaritsa is being poisoned by an unknown enemy. But what Yaga cannot know is that Ivan is being manipulated by powers far older and more fearsome than anyone can imagine.

Medusa's Sisters by Lauren J. A. Bear: A LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR

“What do they call these beasts?” asked another courtier.
“The songs out of Athens name them Gorgons, the dreadful. The mortal one is Medusa.”
“And the other two?”
The merchant shrugged. “Nobody knows.”
A vivid and moving reimagining of the myth of Medusa and the sisters who loved her
for fans of Madeline Miller's Circe and Genevieve Gornichec's The Witch's Hear

A LETTER FROM THE AUTHOR

Dear Reader,
Ideas are trickly little things, difficult to find and hold. And they oftentimes require an arduous process, one that involves pacing or meditating, white boards and crumpled loose-leaf. Sometimes ideas arrive in bits and pieces, to be collected and assembled. And then, in the best of times, the synapses in the brain, or the voices of the muses, perfectly align and there it is, fully formed. The story.

The idea for Medusa’s Sisters came to me like that: a clear, instantaneous spark in a nursery nearly five years ago. My daughter was an infant and I was up with her for a nighttime feeding. This is typically when lack of sleep would send my exhausted, slightly manic mind spinning with questions like ‘How old is Steven
Spielberg?' 'What was the belle epoque?' 'How do you actually pronounce 'Worcestershire'?'

And then, one night: 'Medusa was one of the Gorgons. So, there must have been others. Who were they?'

I pulled up the Gorgons' Wikipedia article on my phone (over my sleeping baby's head) and read early 20th century classicist Jane Ellen Harrison's comment that Medusa was the real Gorgon. The other two sisters were just appendages.

In that moment, holding my daughter, I was a bit overcome. No woman is ever an appendage. My little girl would NEVER be dismissed as somebody else’s “plus one.”

I was going to make the Gorgon sisters matter.

For the next two years, I researched primary sources, searching for Stheno and Euryale in the mythological record. It was a bittersweet quest: on one hand, it bothered me that nobody ever asked what happened to these women, and then on the other hand, I knew I’d been presented with a delicious opportunity. The lack of information allowed me to reimagine these “monsters” as real women, real sisters, with relatable lives – ones full of love and jealousy, fun, pettiness, miscommunication, loyalty, and most notably, heroic strength of heart. To write the novel, I had to first read Homer and Hesiod, Aeschylus and Ovid, but Medusa’s Sisters strives for inclusivity – it’s a classics-inspired story written for everyone.

There is a current hunger for counter-narratives to the assumed and accepted histories to give voice to those who have been muted – and I understand why. For too long the old stories have depended upon the records compiled by an elite group of men. For too long, Medusa and the Gorgons have belonged to
Perseus’s journey. Not anymore! The modern reader cares about perspective and bias. We challenge the given testimony and ask better questions.

The woman with the snake hair has become, arguably, the most iconic image of the femme fatale. But nobody is born evil; monsters are made. I hope Medusa’s Sisters brings the Gorgons to life for you, that it
illuminates a too often discounted reality: even monsters have families.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your time.
All my best,
Lauren J. A.

Medusa's Sisters
by Lauren J. A. Bear
August 8, 2023
A vivid and moving reimagining of the myth of Medusa and the sisters who loved her.

The end of the story is only the beginning…

Even before they were transformed into Gorgons, Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale were unique among their immortal family. Curious about mortals and their lives, Medusa and her sisters entered the human world in search of a place to belong, yet quickly found themselves at the perilous center of a dangerous Olympian rivalry and learned—too late—that a god's love is a violent one.

Forgotten by history and diminished by poets, the other two Gorgons have never been more than horrifying hags, damned and doomed. But they were sisters first, and their journey from lowly sea-born origins to the outskirts of the pantheon is a journey that rests, hidden, underneath their scales.

Monsters, but not monstrous, Stheno and Euryale will step into the light for the first time to tell the story of how all three sisters lived and were changed by each other, as they struggle against the inherent conflict between sisterhood and individuality, myth and truth, vengeance and peace.

REVIEWS
"Bold, beautiful, and brilliantly subversive, Bear's incredible debut is engrossing from the very first page. With her ambitious storytelling, Bear breathes life to characters often reduced to the shadows, and has proven herself as a talent to watch!"—Claire M. Andrews, author of the Daughter of Sparta trilogy

"A must-read for Greek mythology fans seeking new depth in their tales and those who enjoyed Madeline Miller’s Circe or Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls."—Library Journal (starred review)

"Debut novelist Bear has artfully fashioned an entrancing tale that not only perfectly captures in poetic prose both the fabled glories and gritty realities of ancient Greece, but also features a trio of sisters, who, despite being mythological beings, seem all-too real and relatable by virtue of Bear’s gift for incisive characterization."—Booklist

“Bear handles the different voices of Stheno and Euryale with masterful skill and wit… With stellar writing and her focus on Medusa’s forgotten sisters, Bear’s contribution to the sub-genre of mythic retellings is not to be missed. Highly recommended.”—Historical Novel Society

Fantasy Author C.D. Britt: Pros and cons of owning Cerberus + giveaway

Pros and cons of owning Cerberus

One does not truly own Cerberus unless Cerberus deems one worthy, but if you're committed to nurturing a relationship with your own three-headed hell hound, here are the Pros and Cons. (The care and nurturing of said Hellhound will be in next week’s issue).

Pros:

1. Almost human in their level of intelligence, they are empathic to your emotions in a way a mortal canine is not. You can cry over your cheating ex, and instead of just slobbery kisses and furry cuddles, Cerberus is able to help you plot said ex’s bloody demise.

2. Cleans up their own poop which leaves time for other fun activities.

3. The best guard dog since he eats unwanted solicitors. (see #2 in cons)

4. Clears crowds when out for a walk. (see #4 in cons)

5. Great at burying things, like said ex.

Cons:

1. Acid slobber makes playing fetch a lot less fun

2. Will also eat your friends if not careful

3. When in beast mode, will light things on fire with his tail.

4. The screaming and running of humans in a panic can trigger his need to chase. This is when you will need to have an in with the local law enforcement.

5. Great at digging things up... just hopefully not the ex. (Again, a good relationship with local law enforcement would be beneficial here).

Book one in the Clan of Shadows series, a dystopian paranormal romance series.
Book Trailer:

Excerpt
Bryn swayed her body to the last of the music, the night ending slowly as people stumbled and laughed after having allowed themselves the pleasure of being human one night of the year.

Soon enough, only the light of the torches were left aside from the fires that burned only once a year along the street. The shadows took over the celebration as they danced along the buildings.

The feeling in her gut, the warning, grew at a rapid rate and she found herself standing and looking around.

“What’s wrong?” Niamh asked, standing as well, looking for a threat.

“I’m not sure. I’ve had this bad feeling…” Bryn whispered as her system flooded with adrenaline.

The warning horns split open the joyous atmosphere of the night like a knife. The screams of the people matching the horns as they ran from the streets to take cover from the unknown danger.

Bryn and Niamh both turned as one toward the gate as small dust devils made their way along the street, trailing the panicked townspeople as they ran, shoving at each other like wild, mindless animals.

“Sandstorm,” Niamh whispered, her eyes focused on something past the gates. Words in another language Bryn had never heard soon left Niamh’s lips.

In her own panicked state, Bryn tried to calm her nerves, debating on if she could make it back to her apartment or if she needed to take cover with Niamh. The fact that Niamh was in a trance, staring intensely at the gate, made her hand twitch with the urge to slap Niamh out of it.
“Sandstorm!” Justin yelled as he ran down the road toward them. “Get inside and take cover!”

They’d never had a sandstorm bad enough to cause such panic before. The walls usually took the brunt of the weather for them.

“Now!” Justin was suddenly in her face, shoving at her shoulder and pushing her and Niamh into The Sanctuary. A horrifying cloud of red dust enveloped the town right as Justin slammed the door shut behind them. The entire road engulfed in tornadic sand was the last visual she had of Saint’s road.

“Away from the windows!” He herded them to an inner room in The Sanctuary, yelling for the others in brothel to do the same. Bryn didn’t look to see what men from town were here.

She didn’t want that on her conscience and since she was a horrible poker player, she didn’t want to pretend in public when she watched them walking with their families to church service before she turned in for the day.

Settling down in one of the supply rooms, Bryn put her head to her knees, wrapping her arms around her legs. Focusing on her breathing and not the glass breaking, Bryn worked to calm her heart rate, trying to ignore the sobs of the other women in the dark room as the glass broke and the wind howled.

Finian whined, having moved back to Justin’s side.

The only light was from the cracked door Justin looked through, flinching every once in a while as he watched the storm bear down on their little town.

“Calm yourselves. Your yelling isn’t going to change the course of this storm,” Niamh chided, her voice barely audible over the furniture breaking outside of their little room. Bryn was surprised by the calmness in Niamh’s voice as her business was being torn apart. Her whole life was in The Sanctuary.

A tingling started in her fingers and toes, as well as the all too familiar feeling of ants under her skin. Bryn rubbed along her arms at the same time as Justin, their movements mirroring each other.

Looking to Niamh, her eyes focused on the wall as if she could see through it, as if her focus could stop the destruction, Bryn patted the woman on the shoulder before she pulled back.

Her skin was growing more sensitive and the anxiety building up inside her was becoming a raging inferno.

“I am here, come to me, my child,” Bryn heard the whispered words, and looked for who was speaking. No one else looked around for the voice, as if they hadn’t heard it.

Bryn was sure her heart stopped. Was this a vision? It didn’t feel like one.

When Justin looked at her, his eyes confused, she realized it wasn’t just her who had heard the whispered plea.

The distraction of Justin kept her from noticing one of the men in the room sitting too close to her, his fingers brushing hers and she knew before it happened she was going into a vision. Feeling it come upon her, she scooted away from him, further into the corner of the room right as the black stole over her vision.
