Book Review:The Unyielding (Call Of Crows) by Shelly Laurenston

The Unyielding (Call Of Crows)
by Shelly Laurenston
March 28, 2017
400 pages
Publisher: Kensington
Stieg Engstrom, Angriest Viking Ever, has got big problems. The human Viking Clans of earth are in danger of being obliterated—along with the rest of the world—and the only one who may be able to save them is a super pain-in-the-ass Crow. Most people annoy Stieg, but this is the one woman he really can’t stand…

Erin Amsel loves being a Crow! Why wouldn’t she when the other Viking Clans are so hilariously arrogant and humorless? She’s not about to let all that come to an end! She just didn’t expect to be shoulder to shoulder in battle with Stieg. Then again, he’s so easy to torment—and also kind of cute.

With the future of the world riding on them, Stieg knows he’ll have to put aside his desperate need to kiss the smirk right off Erin’s face. Wait. What? He didn’t mean that—did he? No! They have one goal: To conquer the idiots. Because nothing bugs Stieg more than when idiots win. If only he can keep himself from suddenly acting like one…

I love Laurenston’s style of creating a serious backdrop and inserting crazy, cantankerous, snarky characters into it and basically letting them run wild until a solution to the conflict is stumbled upon. Erin is known as the insane Crow and that’s saying a lot because these females give the word a new definition. Anyway, Erin shows no fear when faced with dangerous situations and has ADHD tendencies which naturally makes her perfect *sarcasm* for Stieg, a really adorable, grumpy Raven. These two bickered so much it would have been annoying if they weren’t so funny together. I found myself having a soft spot for Stieg because he had a soft spot for animals and I just can’t resist a big, strong guy who could be so sweet to an animal. Erin had the stronger personality between them though and because of that Stieg seemed a bit more shy and reserved to me but hey, SOMEONE had to balance out that woman’s special brand of crazy!

There’s a lot going on in The Unyielding and a lot is connected to the previous books so while each book can technically be read as a standalone I would recommend reading them in order. The action and butt kicking scenes are superb and as I’ve come to expect from Laurenston, they’re addictive and really give her books that “Epic Adventures Ahead” kind of feel that I keep coming back for. I will say that if you’re looking for a more romance based book then this is not it. None of the books in the series are heavy on the romance, they focus more on the bigger plot connecting them but that’s okay, I actually don’t mind that because the writing is just so fun and well paced that I don’t really feel the absence of a heavy romance plot.

Laurenston’s style isn’t for everyone. Sometimes the female characters can and do get annoying but it’s not enough to deter me from enjoying them because while they can get a bit aggravating, these women are never weak, and they are never unable to fight their own fights. For that, I can overlook a bit of the crazy that surrounds them.

Double Book Review: The Unleashing (Call of Crows #1) by Shelly Laurenston

The Unleashing (Call of Crows #1)

WINGING IT
Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn’t for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.

In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig “Vig” Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life—but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines.

But Vig can’t give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera’s discipline, Vig’s loyalty… and the Crows’ sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.

Katie's Review
First of all, this cover is smoking hot! I love the sexy dude and the birds crowding around in the background. It grabs the eye and makes my mouth water!

Once I dived into this new tale of lore and fantasy, I found it a little difficult to follow each character point of view, since there are a bunch of other characters that jump in and take over for portions. With a new world being built I can understand how the author wanted to really branch out and show the diversity. However, this pulled me away from the main story and the couple who we're supposed to be falling for.

This then leads me to have little or no investment in the main pair, which was sad since I really wanted to dig in with my vampy claws! Sadly, the meaty parts of their interactions and dialog are overshadowed by everything else going on. The world itself is vibrant and rife with tons of colorful characters, but you get a taste test of each one. Not a full meal with dessert of one or two points of view.

I liked a lot about this story, but the harshness of the gals toward one another became trying at times. The jumping all over the story map left me confused and disoriented. I had to go back in pages often to see if I missed parts, the story moves quickly to the next scene.

Overall the fantasy elements are all here, the pieces of puzzle are almost haphazardly thrown around. However, how they are collected and placed on the paranormal board going forward will determine if this new saga will really take off.

Adria's Review
Shelly Laurenston launches a new series with The Unleashing that combines the laugh out loud humor that she’s known for with a fun story inspired by Norse mythology!

Former Marine Kera Watson never thought her life would end in the back of a coffee shop. Alone and beyond pissed, the last person she expected to show up in her last moments was her favorite customer, Ludvig Rundstrom.

Vig knows someone who can save Kera but he’s not sure if she’ll be grateful or ticked off, yet he doesn’t want to let go of her. Now that she’s a Crow, he’ll have to try extra hard to get and keep her because competing with Kera’s new sister-Crows for attention is going to take a whole new set of skills.

To be clear, The Unleashing is NOT a continuation of an earlier book called Hunting Season. It is a brand new, separate book, new characters, new storyline, everything, and in my opinion, this one just kills it!

The Unleashing follows Kera’s difficult but often funny transition from mortal woman to Crow, leaving nothing out, including her first flight lesson with her Crow sisters, which is hilarious by the way. Laurenston explains to readers old and new the legends surrounding the Crows, Ravens, Protectors and What is the other clan?.

While there were plenty of laughs to be had in this book, there were also tough emotional situations for Kera and her new sisters. As tough as Kera was as a mortal and a Marine, it didn’t completely transfer over to her new life as a Crow. She was vulnerable and at times defenseless which gave her new depth. I loved that side of her just as much as I loved the ball busting, foul mouthed side. Her love and loyalty to her dog Brodie was icing on the cake too. Also, major points to Laurenston for making Brodie a pit bull with her own tragic past. That added a different kind of emotion all together, especially since Brodie is the first pet the Crows have ever had and they take to her so well it’s cute!

Vig was more of a background hero than one of the main players, The Unleashing is Kera’s story after all and that was just fine with me. Kera needed plenty of time to transition into her life as a Crow and while she and Vig did fall in love, their romance wasn’t the main thing in the story and it totally worked fine with me! He wasn’t an over the top macho Raven warrior, but was he a take no crap guy? Yeah, but when it came to Kera, he stepped back to let her find her place in her own clan, he didn’t offer advice or demand she do things a certain way, he was supportive and to me that just made him such a stud muffin. He was that confident that Kera would become one of the strongest Crows known on her own. That’s just sexy.

Aside from a stud muffin and adorable dog, I felt like I was really being given a real look at the lives of the Crows and just what it meant to be one of them. They’re warriors but they’re also snarky, bitchy, dramatic women who will tear each other’s hair out over something as simple as a missing Danish yet if someone messes with one of them, ALL of them will step in to rip apart the offender. They’re wild and they’re nuts and guess what? They’re just my kind of gals!

Kera’s journey started off as a quest to adjust to being a Crow but there’s a bigger story being developed here and The Unleashing did an excellent job of setting up what might end up being a major battle for Crows, Ravens and every other clan available. The book resolves Kera’s journey and her romance with Vig but it barely begins with the bigger story that I’m sure will fuel upcoming books in the series.

The Unleashing was way more than I thought it would be. Of course it had the typical Shelly Laurenston gut busting humor that only a sarcastic reader will appreciate but it also had a solid background, likable characters and a hot romance. What more could I have asked for? I mean, aside from the next book in my hands ASAP?

Sheep Book Review: Bite Me by Shelly Laurenston

Bite Me
The Pride Series
By: Shelly Laurenston
Paranormal Romance

Plot:
Livy Kowalski has no time for idiots. When you shapeshift into a honey badger, getting through life's irritants is a finely honed skill. Until she gets stuck housing her nutso cousin and dealing with her dad's untimely and unexplained demise.

That's where Vic Barinov comes in--or his house does. Vic can't step outside without coming back to find Livy devouring his honey stash and getting the TV remote sticky. It gets his animal instincts all riled up. But he'll have to woo her at high speed: all hell is breaking loose, and Livy is leading the charge. . .

Fans of this series are sure to enjoy keeping up with some of the previous characters. The author does a great job of bringing previous packs back into the mix, while creating a new storyline. Adding to that the unique humor and off the wall situations and you're sure to keep the pages turning on this heartfelt romance.

This is a series about shifters, so you're either going to get on board with that fact or not. For those that like it, these guys and gals are hard-hitting-in-your-face-animals. I'll admit, that took me some time to warm up to when I first started the saga. But adjust I did, and now I can enjoy all the fun right along with the cast of whacky characters.

I'll recommend that all newcomers start at the beginning of this series. While some previous books may have been "okay" to read as a standalone, Bite Me is really one you need to work up to. Our main characters both have a past and history and you'll see that in previous books as they move forward.
You have to know Livy to love her, cause she's a honey badger and they don't give a fu@$! That is your warning, strap in and get ready cause you're in for a shifter treat!

On top of all the fun these characters have, there's a lot of love and depth that's built. By the time our leads get to the climax, you're primed and ready! These two have a very different type of relationship and that's awesome. You can't have all your characters fall in love the same way, that won't work!

This is a good read for both PNR fans and shifter lovers alike. I'm sticking with this author for all the madness and I hope you will too!

Sheep Book Review: Wolf With Benefits by Shelly Laurenston

Wolf With Benefits (The Pride Series #8)
By: Shelly Laurenston
Paranormal Romance

Ricky Lee has no plans of getting serious about anyone, but he will protect Toni Jean-Louis Parker. Not just because he's been hired to do so, but because it's the right thing to do. And if that means travelling around the country with one complicated She-jackal, dealing with chocolate-eating wild dogs, instigating trouble between his brothers, and having the most amazing sex he's ever had...well, who said his job didn't have perks? Toni doesn't know how she keeps getting herself into these situations. But even she has to admit there's something about Ricky Lee Reed that she finds kind of interesting...and downright sexy. Now they just have to survive long enough to figure out if what they have is worth fighting for...

First off let me say, I really like this author's previous stories. The saga as a whole is well written, funny and very entertaining. I did not however enjoy this installment of the very colorful pride series.

We start with the tale of Toni and Ricky, a coyote shifter and wolf shift. It's abundantly apparent from the start that our main guy is out for some fun in the sack and not much else. As the story develops, we somehow jump from a hookup to "she's mine". With not much going on in between. Sure, he follows her around and they hang out, but there's no growth as a pair. No match made in heaven feel. With a romance novel, you expect that pull of the main couple. That was lacking.

Since Toni is one of about 10 siblings, a huge portion of this story revolves around their hectic schedule. All of her siblings are prodigies in some way. Be it the arts, music, math, or dancing. Each one is advanced beyond their young years and each one has some form of OCD or ADD. Possibly a mix of both. I found this very tedious to read about. The constant going on's about the schedule these kids have, the fighting between each other and over the top antics were a serious justification for birth control. Anyone looking to have kids, should read this book. You may think twice.

As previously stated, the kids schedules and Toni managing them is the main focus of the book. Really, her superpower is scheduling. I'd ask for a refund. There's so many different characters jam-packed in here that I had a hard time keeping track of who's who. Let's not forget about the abundance of meaningless violence going on. The packs are constantly at each others throats and there seemed to be a glorification of the fact that the men are just pushy. Animals they may be, but it got old, fast.

After chapters and chapters of filler we finally get to something worth while! But that does not happen until the final few chapters. I always try to finish every single book I start, but this was really hard to read. The split focus of multiple characters was overwhelming and took away from what should have been about Toni and Ricky. This left me both frustrated and let down.

If you like family drama and unruly kids, who will make you want to take a long walk off a short pier, then you'll find it here. I strongly recommend skipping this story altogether and waiting for the next. You wont miss much and Shelly does a good job of catching you up on previous stories with each new edition.
