Book Review: The Sea Spinner (Reign of Remnants) by Julie Johnson

The Sea Spinner (Reign of Remnants)
by Julie Johnson
April 28, 2026
Genre: Romantasy
Blazing with reawakened magic, a young woman challenges the tides of fate in this highly anticipated sequel to the #1 Sunday Times bestseller The Wind Weaver.

Rhya Fleetwood is tired of being a pawn in other people’s wargames.

The fledgling wind weaver wants—needs—to master her magic before anything else is taken from her. She’s already lost her friends, her newfound home…will she lose Penn too? There’s no denying the scorching heat between them but, in the aftermath of battle, the Remnant of Fire burns more than anything to rebuild his kingdom and sate his inextinguishable need for revenge.

And he’s not the only one whispering to Rhya across the wind. From the distant island city of Hylios, another voice calls. Another bond pulls.

King Soren, Remnant of Water, is as different from Penn as sparks are from mist. The more insight he offers into the magic that binds them together, the more confused Rhya feels—about her future as a Remnant, about her deepest desires, and about her role in the coming war.

Torn between fire and sea, between the king who could break her heart and the king who understands her potential, Rhya will have to finally step into her power…or risk losing it altogether.

I didn't read the first book in this new series, The Wind Weaver, so I may have lost a bit going into this one. Sometimes I need all the back drama and character building, sometimes I can just jump right in. It's a toss-up. But, with all that said, this was a very good book!

TONS of action, just how I like it! Love a great adventure tale that takes you all around the story world. Loved reading about the complex and diverse characters, both fire and water, trying to make it work in a world that is out to get them. Some hard decisions that draw our leading pair even closer just sucks you further.

Really enjoyed the magical nature; the pictures painted on the pages were so vivid and lifelike. At times, I swear some Enya was playing in the background of my mind, just adding to the overall whimsical journey.

Enjoyed this one from the start, can't wait to read the next!

Book Review: Thunder Game (A GhostWalker Novel Book 20) by Christine Feehan

Thunder Game (A GhostWalker Novel Book 20)
by Christine Feehan
May 6, 2025
Book 20 of 20: GhostWalker
Two broken souls find a love worth fighting for in this captivating GhostWalker novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.

Diego Campos has come home to die. The GhostWalker is tired of walking a dark path shaped by countless losses. There has never been a moment of good in his life that wasn’t followed by something bad. But as he makes his way to his family’s homestead in the Appalachian Mountains, his plans are interrupted by a violent ambush that sets his life on a new course.

In between fighting off a small army of assailants, Diego is struck by a beautiful, brutal warrior woman unlike anyone he’s encountered before. Compelled to rescue her, Diego uses his psychic gifts to make Leila’s broken body whole again and save her from certain death. With each new breath she regains her strength, showcasing her humor, intelligence and courage as she reveals the truths of her past and inspires feelings Diego never thought his heart could experience.

After a lifetime alone, in the middle of firefight, Diego has finally found a light to guide him through the darkness—and one brief touch is enough to set them both aflame.

Amazon

Diego has come home to die. He's had enough of life and goes to the one place he knows his brother will find him and carry out his last wishes. Diego is a Ghostwalker--an enhanced and experimented-on soldier who thinks he's not as good as his brother. Ghostwalkers are men who volunteered to be enhanced psychically so they would be of more use to their country.

However, Dr. Peter Whitney also performed experimental gene coding on them without their consent or knowledge. Because of his connections and the government, which wanted his enhanced soldiers, he was pretty much untouchable and continued to experiment with people.

Diego and his teammates are more like family to each other and will help each other out. Before Diego can get to his cabin, a bunch of soldiers comes for his elderly neighbor who is an ex Ghostwalker. But he's not alone. His two nieces are with him and one gets kidnapped while the other gets hurt. Diego has to trust Leila and show her some of his psychic gifts that no one else knows about in order to save her life.

Leila is a surprise because he's never had such a reaction to a woman before and he feels a pull towards her. Once they have both rested and she is healing and feeling better, they want to go after her sister but more soldiers show up. Diego and Leila work together to take them out and keep each other safe. But when Diego's brother finds out what's going on and finds out some secrets that Diego has been keeping, the rest of the Ghostwalker team make their way to them to help out.

Diego and Leila's romance was a slow burn because neither of them had ever felt anything like the instant attraction they felt for each other. They let themselves get to know each other as they grew closer and tried to find a way to rescue her loved ones from Whitney before he could experiment with them more. There was so much action in this book, so much fighting so we get to see Leila and Diego in action.

I really liked that the rest of the Ghostwalker team showed up, and we got to see how his teammates, the characters from past books, and their families were doing. I really loved that. It's nice to see how characters from previous books that you really liked are doing. This is the 20th book in Christine Feehan's Ghostwalker series and I can completely recommend this book as well as this series. But I would read the books in order to understand what has been happening and how it all started.

This was a great addition to the series, and I look forward to reading more about it.

I give this book 5 sheep!

I write every day and have done so since I was old enough to pick up a pen. (I spent a lot of time getting in trouble at school for writing instead of doing the things I was supposed to do.) Once I create my characters, I try very hard to have them react to situations as they really would. Sometimes I have preconceived ideas of what I would like them to do, but they don’t mind me, because it would be out of character for them. They take on a life of their own. Sometimes when I throw difficult situations at them in the hopes I’ll get a certain reaction and they don’t do what I want, I complain bitterly to my husband and he laughs at me. Still, it is important to me to have them be real, not perfect people, so they make mistakes we lesser mortals might make.

Bride of the Shadow King by author Sylvia Mercedes was a very romantic and elegant version of PNR. This is why I absolutely love the genre, all versions of it and so much variety to love!

Personally, also a big fan of BBC romance made for tv mini series. LOVE them and Bride of the Shadow King hits all those notes. It's fancy. It's charming. Plus you get a ton of fantastical beasts, unicorns are afoot and they are wild!

New takes on a very colorful and vibrant world, painted a new outside-the-box picture in a cool way. A realm on the verge of all out war and everything falls to the feet of these two sisters. The forbidden love that follows was nail biting and kept me turning the pages.

Will they, wont they. You know it's going to happen but the tease to the end is fun! I read this book in a day and enjoyed every minute of it. If you are looking for a PNR that's not filled with blood, guts, fingers and toes, then give this one a go!

Book Review: A Werewolf's Guide to Seducing a Vampire (Glimmer Falls) by Sarah Hawley + excerpt

A Werewolf's Guide to Seducing a Vampire (Glimmer Falls)
by Sarah Hawley
August 13, 2024
Genre: paranormal romance, comedy
Ben Rosewood never meant to be bound to a vampire succubus, especially one as sexy-yet-terrifying as Eleonore Bettencourt-Devereux, but he has to admit there are some fang-tastic perks….

Werewolf Ben Rosewood is happy with his life. One hundred percent. Everything is fine. His business, Ben’s Plant Emporium, is thriving, and he’s even expanding the shop. His anxiety disorder is…well, it’s been better, but that comes with the territory of running a business and having beastly urges every full moon, right? As for romance—who has the time? Though his family is desperate to see him settled, Ben is fine approaching forty as a single werewolf. But after drunkenly bidding on and winning a supposedly-possessed crystal on eBay one night, he finds himself face-to-face with a beautiful yet angry vampire.

Eleonore Bettencourt-Devereux is a rare breed—a vampire succubus born from two elite European bloodlines during medieval times. Thanks to an evil witch, she’s been stuck in a crystal since she was thirty, forced to obey orders from the possessor of the rock. Eleonore's been dreaming of breaking the spell and severing the witch’s head for centuries. But did this witch really sell her to someone new, and for only ninety-nine cents?

Eleonore would claw this werewolf’s heart out and eat it, if only the binding spell would allow her to. But Eleonore and Ben soon realize they can help each other with both vengeful and less hostile needs. And why not have a little fun along the way?

A Werewolf's Guide to Seducing a Vampire by author Sarah Hawley if the third installment in the whacky Glimmer Falls series. Just based on the past titles in this series, you can get a small hint of the snarky fun in between the pages.

These characters are downright FUNNY and at times you will literally laugh out loud. I loved the wild and entertaining world that lights up the pages and ultimately found a way into my undead heart. This story reads like the TV show I Dream of Jeannie, us finely aged folks will understand, but with a very modern day edge and much darker twist.

I LOVED the interplay between our main two characters, they were written in such a way that makes them feel real I know a good book is in my hands when I have dreams about the characters. Boy, did I have some dreams!

The story is a tad heavy in the pages at just about 440 or so, it could have been cut down some but also......why? It's written just right for this goldilocks! The steamy build just adds to the overall enjoyment, I can't say enough good things without giving it all away!

Read this one if you're looking for just a zany, whacky, snark filled good time.

On werewolf Ben Rosewood's list of Things To Avoid If At All Possible, weddings were near the top.

It wasn't that he hated seeing other people happy or that he disliked cake or an open bar or dancing-well, all right, dancing was mortifying unless one was very drunk, which the open bar took care of-it was that he felt like a terrible person every time he went to one.

He raised his champagne, swaying slightly. The post-ceremony dinner was wrapping up and it was speech-making time. Another mortifying activity best practiced by drunk people or those who didn't have an anxiety disorder.

In vino confidence, he thought.

Mariel and Ozroth Spark, the newlyweds in question, looked at him expectantly from the sweetheart table. One witch, one demon: both people Ben cared about and didn't want to disappoint with a terrible speech.

"Mariel," he said, addressing his longtime friend and employee at his garden shop, Ben's Plant Emporium, "it has been a privilege to work alongside you and watch you thrive like the plants you care for. You've always given your time, love, and support to everyone around you, and you deserve to receive that love back a thousandfold."

Ben was sweating. He nudged his gold-framed glasses up his nose with his free hand, then peered down at the note card on the table that held his talking points.

"Now that you have Oz by your side," he continued, "you shine more brightly than ever, and I'm happy to see it."

It was a clumsy speech, but Mariel didn't seem to mind. The brunette witch was beaming, looking radiant in a white dress with lacy cap sleeves and a full skirt embroidered with vines and flowers. Next to her and wearing a black suit that matched his usual stark aesthetic was Oz-or as he had once been termed, Ozroth the Ruthless. The soul bargainer had been on Ben's shit list for a long time before he'd realized the demon was actually considerate, thoughtful, and utterly besotted with Mariel under that gruff exterior.

The normally surly Oz was now grinning widely, with lines of joy stamped beside his eyes. Those marks deepened with every year on Earth now that Oz was mortal, and Ben felt a surge of longing laced with envy. Not because Oz was marrying Mariel in particular-marrying Mariel, Ben's tipsy brain repeated, delighting in the alliteration-but because they were happy and in love.

This was why Ben didn't like weddings. He should be unconditionally delighted for his friends rather than sad about his own single status. He shoved down the shameful envy and glanced at the card again.

"Oz," he continued, addressing the black-haired, black-horned demon, "as you know, I wasn't sure about you at first. It isn't every day a demon comes portaling to Earth demanding your friend's soul." The crowd chuckled at that, and Ben felt a surge of relief. Thank Lycaon, progenitor of werewolves, he wasn't messing this up too badly. "But I saw how hard you fought to protect Mariel, and since then your love has grown and deepened. You prove that love with actions, not just words, which is the measure of a good man. It's an honor to know both of you and to be invited to give this speech."

He wasn't sure why they'd asked him to give a speech, but the reception had been speech-heavy so far, with family and friends of the bride and groom spouting impassioned, brilliant toasts that were all far better than Ben's.

"My skills are in gardening, not public speaking," he said, wrapping things up, "so I'm going to sit down before I embarrass myself." Another few chuckles at that. "In lieu of the brilliant oratory you deserve, I present you with a plant." He nodded toward the side of the room where another of his employees, a naiad named Rani, stood holding an orchid. She strode forward, grinning confidently in the way of well-adjusted people who didn't want to shrivel up and disappear in front of a crowd, and presented the plant to Mariel.

Mariel gasped and clapped her hands to her mouth. "Ben, are you serious? You found a Winter Sunrise?"

The Winter Sunrise orchid was rare, found only near the top of a magic-laced mountain in France where the ley lines allowed flowers to bloom through the snow. Its petals were snowy white blending into soft pink, the edges lined with orange, and the golden stamen glittered with magic.

"A rare flower for a rare friend," Ben said. He'd had to trade away a substantial selection of aphrodisiacal plants from his shop's inventory to get it, but he didn't regret the transaction.

"It's perfect," Mariel said, beaming at him. The orchid leaned forward in its pot, brushing its petals against her cheek. Mariel wrinkled her freckled nose. "Hi, baby," she whispered to the flower. "You're going to love my greenhouse."

Plants always behaved that way around Mariel. She was brimming with so much nature magic, the world came alive around her and plants acted downright enamored. Ben was a bit jealous, since werewolves didn't have any magic other than the truly unfortunate monthly transformation into a feral creature, but he couldn't deny it made her a heck of an employee at the garden shop.

Oz looked at Ben with obvious gratitude. Thank you, the demon mouthed.

Ben nodded in acknowledgment. Then, glad to have the speech over with, he plopped back into his seat.

His sister, Gigi, nudged him with her fork. A fork that unfortunately had residual sauce on it, leaving a greasy smudge on his navy coat sleeve. "Good speech, bro."

He blew out a heavy breath. "I'm just glad it's over."

"You're a great public speaker. I don't know why you hate it so much." Gigi shrugged and tucked back into her pasta.

His sister was thirty-three years old to Ben's thirty-eight, though he claimed she acted ten years younger and she claimed he acted eighty years older. They were both taller and more broad-shouldered than average and had the same thick brown hair and brown eyes, but personality-wise, they couldn't have been more different. Gigi was an extrovert who loved parties and public speaking, while Ben preferred time alone with his plants, books, and knitting.

Tonight Gigi was wearing a gold dress with her favorite pink Converse, and glittering piercings marched up her ears. "Thank Lycaon you're not wearing a sweater vest," she'd said when she'd spotted his navy suit earlier that day. "Someday you'll let me take you shopping."

That was an "absolutely not," and what was so wrong with sweater vests? They were sophisticated yet cozy, wrapping around his torso like a hug.

Or maybe like one of those ThunderShirts worn by quivering dogs, his judgmental inner voice said.

Ben drained his champagne.

Thankfully, the speeches wrapped up soon after. They'd gone well, all things considered. He'd had a brief moment of worry when Mariel's mother had spoken, but Diantha had spent the last two years repairing her relationship with Mariel and attending therapy. She wasn't perfect, but she was vastly improved from the pre-Oz days.

With speeches and eating done, it was time for dancing-and an open bar, thank the neurosis gods. The event space had a ceremony room decorated with stained glass, a large dining room, and an open-air courtyard where the rest of the festivities would take place. Magical light orbs drifted over the stone courtyard, and the trees enclosing the yard had been draped with rainbow fairy lights and gauzy swaths of fabric in bright colors. The night sky was thankfully clear-never a guarantee in the small town of Glimmer Falls or western Washington State in general-and the mid-August temperature was ideal. If the temperature or weather had been bad, though, one of the attending witches or warlocks would have taken care of it with a micro-climate spell.

Ben smiled as Oz tromped his way through the choreographed steps of the couple's first dance with the grim concentration of a general approaching battle. Mariel didn't seem to mind the demon's straightforward but less-than-graceful ballroom style-she laughed and spun in his arms, dress flaring like a blooming lily. After Oz dipped her low and delivered a decidedly PG-13 kiss, the assembled guests cheered.

Then it was time for the father-daughter and mother-son dance. This had been an object of concern during the year leading up to the wedding. Mariel's relationship with her father was still strained from his years supporting Diantha's absurdities, though they'd made progress in family therapy. The more difficult issue was that Oz had been taken away from his demoness mother at a young age in order to be trained as a soul bargainer and hadn't seen her in hundreds of years-hadn't even known her name or if she was alive or dead. But Oz's childhood mentor, Astaroth, had made it his mission to atone for his part in that tragedy by finding her, and now Elwenna the demoness stood at the edge of the dance floor, hands clasped to her mouth. When the music started up again and Oz held out a hand, eyes glistening, she took it, and more than a few guests started weeping outright.

Ben had always been a crier, and now he wiped away a tear, sniffling. He couldn't imagine being separated from his family for that long.

He also couldn't imagine the day coming when he could spin his wife around the dance floor in front of their families . . . though he could easily conjure a memory of the last time he'd talked with his mother on the phone and she'd hesitantly asked, "So, I know you're busy, but have you given any thought to dating?"

Yes, Mom. Arguably too much thought. And the moment "anxious, workaholic werewolf" appeared on someone's vision board, she'd be first to know.

But tonight wasn't about him, so Ben gave his full attention to the two pairs spinning (or aggressively marching, as the case may be) across the dance floor, applauding and cheering them on.

Once the formal dances ended, Mariel grabbed a flute of champagne and raised it high. "Let's party!"

Music started blasting from the speakers as people of a variety of species rushed to the dance floor to begin gyrating with an enviable amount of confidence. Ben sidled up to the bar. It was manned by a centaur named Hylo he recognized as the bartender at a dive bar, Le Chapeau Magique. They had buzzed hair and a labret piercing, and their roan coat had been shaved with heart designs to commemorate the occasion.

"What's your poison?" Hylo asked.

"Whiskey," Ben said. He normally wasn't much of a drinker, but if he was going to dance-and Gigi would certainly drag him onto the floor if Mariel didn't first-he needed to drown his self-consciousness.

"How about an old fashioned?" At Ben's nod, Hylo started mixing ingredients, tapping their hooves rhythmically. The nonbinary centaur was a member of an Irish step dance troupe as well as a popular ClipClop influencer (as Gigi had informed him, being far more social media savvy than he was). Hylo presented the drink with a flourish, and Ben thanked them, slipping money into the tip jar.

He downed the old fashioned in under a minute, then held the empty glass out.

Hylo raised their eyebrows. "Dang, are you trying to get wasted?"

Ben gestured to the dance floor. "Social anxiety," he said succinctly.

"Ah." Hylo nodded knowingly. "Well, don't party too hard, all right? I'll have to cut you off if you get rowdy."

Ben wanted to laugh at the idea. The rest of his extended family was noisy, chaotic, and prone to brawling, as most werewolves were, but the number of times he'd done something that might be classified as "rowdy" could be numbered on one hand. "Don't worry, I'm a sad drunk," he said.

Hylo rattled the cocktail shaker before pouring him a second drink. "Weddings can be tough," they said. "Especially for single people."

Was he that transparent? Ben grimaced. "They shouldn't be. I just need to be a better person." He slipped another tip into Hylo's jar.

"It's nothing to do with being good or bad. Being sad or lonely or even jealous is normal-the thing that matters is how you treat people, and as far as I've seen, you've been very kind." Hylo patted his hand. "And who knows? Maybe you'll meet your soul mate here."

"Maybe," Ben said with zero sincerity. His life was consumed by running a small business, and what kind of woman wanted to be saddled with a werewolf who didn't even like howling at the moon?

But Hylo was being kind and understanding in that bartender/therapist way that involved emotional labor they didn't need to be doing, so Ben mustered up a smile. "Thank you," he said. "Maybe tonight's the night I find her at last."

Did Ben hate dancing?

He didn't remember. All he knew was that the world was tilting, the glow-orbs overhead had doubled, and he was flailing his arms to a pop song he didn't know the name of. Around him, other guests wiggled or stomped or flapped their wings in similarly chaotic fashion.

"I love this song!" shouted the pixie hovering a few inches off the ground. Themmie-short for Themmaline-Tibayan was a Pixtagram influencer and a good friend. Her naturally black hair was bespelled purple and pink, and her iridescent wings shimmered. Along with Gigi, she'd been one of the instigators of the Get Ben on the Dance Floor campaign.

"Me, too!" shouted a British demon with pale blond hair and black horns who was gyrating on the opposite side of the small circle they'd formed. That was Astaroth, Oz's former mentor, who had been kind of evil before a bout of amnesia had improved him immensely. The improvement was also due to his partner, Calladia Cunnington, who had reformed the demon during a road trip nearly two years ago. Astaroth's memories had returned, including the knowledge that he was half human, but he'd remained on Team Good and now lived with Calladia on Earth, visiting the demon plane on occasion to help implement progressive societal reforms.

Astaroth was an incredible dancer. He'd spun Calladia around the floor in a waltz earlier-only wincing a few times when she stepped on his toes or headbutted him while trying to take the lead-and now he was doing an enviable John Travolta impression. He was also ridiculously handsome and an expert swordsman, and Ben had reflected more than once that the universe needed to spread out its gifts a bit more evenly.

Thankfully, being surrounded by good dancers and internet-famous pixies meant fewer people were looking at Ben. Thus, he was free to flail.

The Bone sisters, Cordelia and Eustace inherited the Connecticut mansion and fortune of their great-aunt, Augusta. For Cordelia, it may be a way for her to get much needed money to pay off her husband John’s debts from a gangster and to fix a mold in their Texas home so she can sell it. For Eustace, as you read further on, she is one more chemo treatment away. Once they live in the house, Eustace begins to gain weight and looks like the peak of health. Cordelia learns that if any of them leave off their land for anytime, it is not safe for them health-wise.They can even die when visiting the nearby town for groceries. She also learns the townspeople fear the Bone family. The sisters figure out they are descendants of Nordic witches, bone witches. Meanwhile, Cordelia is falling for their groundskeeper. If that wasn’t all, Cordelia needs to find out why she is not getting better like her sister, and it also appears someone is out to get them.

If The Addams Family and The Haunting of Hill House gave birth, this dark fantasy with romance would be the result. It pulls the reader into this mystery and wickedly magical story that is hard to put down.

I give The Witches of Bone Hill 4 ½ sheep.

I mean with a tagline like that, wow, freaking meow!!!!! SOLD. I loved this one from start to finish. Has to be my new favorite series for 2022. What a dragon, what a world, what a story!

This was a non-stop reread through and through for me, maybe I didn't even take a bathroom break while reading. TMI? Oh well! I was enraptured, engulfed, involved with every beat of my vampire's heart. LOVED the main characters, from head to dragon toe. Alpha's Fire is everything hot and heavy that you dream for, no that you would die for, in a PNR. (Maybe I'm being dramatic) The point is, this is one for the ages and could have been 100 more pages.

The balance and care taken with this story was so thought-out, very well-matched as a couple to each having their own strengths. I'm giving away nothing and everything all the same time with this review. Overall, I can't recommend this one highly enough. It fires on all cylinders and is worth the time and enjoyment of reading.

PROLOGUE
Tabitha, age 18
The chilly air nips my skin, bared by my tank top. An hour into my hike, I’ve already shed my jacket—I’m a strange combination of cold and sweaty. Weird, but it feels good.

There’s snow on the peaks towering ahead of me. It’s spring here, but snow still lingers in the long shadows of the thickly clustered pines.

This early in the morning, my breath puffs as I trek across a frozen field where a few yellow wildflowers poke their heads up over the matted grass. I’m the only tourist crazy enough to be hiking so early in the season. I haven’t seen anyone on the trail. The mountains of northern Italy are technically the Alps, but the locals call them I Dolomiti. The hike I chose isn’t as challenging as the ones that would carry me up the tallest peak, but my thighs burn from the steady incline. It’s still better than swaying down a catwalk in five-inch heels and a weird poofy dress that left most of my back and butt uncovered. When I was a model, I’d do anything for fashion but no longer. This model has officially quit the circuit.

“I don't understand,” my mother wailed when I called to tell her. “You were doing so well. You were making such great contacts.” In mom-speak, that meant I was meeting men. Rich men who’d love to have a model on their arm. The sort of man my mom hoped would sweep me off my feet and give me a diamond ring and marriage proposal or at least a diamond watch and an extended stay in his private penthouse. Maybe even a car and a few trips to the Riviera or Seychelles.

The type of man my mother always chased after.

I didn’t tell her that it was my date with exactly that kind of man that broke me. I was at another boring after-party on the arm of a short stock broker named Paul. Perfectly nice guy, but just because I'm a model and his head barely clears my shoulder doesn't mean that he has the right to put his hand on my ass.

I’ve stomped across the meadow and up the trail that’s disappearing between the blue-gray pines before I realize I’m muttering under my breath. A bird trills on an evergreen branch above my head, and my rage disappears.

I take a moment to clear my lungs. The air is fresh and better than any expensive cologne. The water flowing from a mountain stream is pure snowmelt and probably tastes like heaven. Tiny purple flowers peek up from the cracks in the gray rocks, and the bird above my head warbles like his sex life depends on it.

I’m far from the fashion circuit in Milan. No more crowded events that overwhelm my senses. No more clashing auras or toxic energies leaving me with a headache, desperate to get away. No more handsy businessmen who treat me like a cigar–a possession, an indulgence, a prop.

No more sharing an apartment with six other half-starved young people whose daily food intake adds up to barely half a sandwich. The first thing I did after I told my agent I quit was eat a giant bowl of cheesy pasta.

Right now, my backpack is full of the best provisions: good cheese, a local red wine, and several packs of biscotti.

I may have disappointed my mother, but I feel better than I have in a year. Like a weight lifted off my chest.

It’s been almost three months since I quit and started wandering like a vagabond. I spent a little of my fashion week earnings on a pair of hiking boots and a backpack. The rest of my nest egg has gone to reserving the little mountain huts called rifugios and a nice rental near Lake Como where I stayed while waiting for the snow to melt.

The plan is to hike Alta Via 1 and beyond. Spend the summer in the mountains. And after that, who knows? I’m eighteen, and I can do anything. This spring is the start of my new life.

Fifteen minutes of climbing, and my thighs are shaking, but it’s all worth it when I round the corner and come across a magical mountain lake. The water is a brilliant teal, an ethereal color as bright and shocking as a Lilly Pullitzer jumper.

I can’t resist going to the edge and dipping my hand in, but instead of bracing cold, the water is warm as a freshly drawn bath. In the middle of the lake, steam’s rising off the surface.

Is this a hot spring? If so, my guidebook didn’t mention it.

I drop my jacket and my pack. Facing the clear pool, I feel extra grimy. I’m so tempted to strip everything off and jump in.

But I'm not alone.

There's a man in the pool. His dark head is even with a rocky outcropping, which is why I didn't see him before.

Once I see him, I can’t look away. He’s not swimming, but walking in the shallows. Water streams off his sculpted shoulders, lapping lovingly at his massive pectoral muscles.

A few more steps towards the shore, and water flows away from his diamond-hard abs, cut and sculpted with the precision of a shower, not a grower. Except actually... He is a grower. Because the longer I stare at his cock, the bigger it gets. “Holy hell,” I mutter. This wild man in the wilderness with a beard like John the Baptist is making me hotter and wetter between my legs than I've ever been. Maybe I’m just in a dry spell.

Book Review: At The End Of Everything by Marieke Nijkamp

At The End Of Everything
By Marieke Nijkamp

ASIN: B091572X47

ISBN: 9781492673156
The Hope Juvenile Treatment Center is ironically named. No one has hope for the delinquent teenagers who have been exiled there; the world barely acknowledges that they exist.

Then the guards at Hope start acting strange. And one day...they don't show up. But when the teens band together to make a break from the facility, they encounter soldiers outside the gates. There's a rapidly spreading infectious disease outside, and no one can leave their houses or travel without a permit. Which means that they're stuck at Hope. And this time, no one is watching out for them at all.

As supplies quickly dwindle and a deadly plague tears through their ranks, the group has to decide whom among them they can trust and figure out how they can survive in a world that has never wanted them in the first place.

Teenagers arrested or needing help, but not deemed hopeless, are sent to the Hope Juvenile Treatment Center. Where they soon learn to follow the routine. Up at six, the movement line, headcount, and breakfast at seven. Two wings have school in the morning, the other two in the afternoon. Lunch and dinner at set times, with bedtime at nine. It never changes.

The novel is in first person, with the name of the character at the top of the page, as several tell the story from their viewpoint. The main three are Grace, Logan (both she and her sister, Leah, were sent to the place), and Emerson (a binary character). I liked that all three actually grow in their characters, unlike many books where the main characters never do.

One night the teens realize all the staff is gone and the teens have been abandoned. Grace has one of the kids, a boy nicknamed the Professor, use the warden’s computer. They learn a terrible plague is happening, and that the warden knew and left them there to fend for themselves. A group of kids leaves, those remaining work to take care of themselves, especially when one of the girls, Leah, comes down with the virus.

Intense thriller, with danger from either the virus, adults, or one of their own, this Young Adult has many elements that might be considered disturbing to some readers, including death. There are warnings at the beginning of the book. But the story is good, and I really learned to like some of the girls and boys, especially the main characters. Since the author admitted having Covid and working on this book during the pandemic lockdown. You see the parallels between the story and people's real-life reactions (like one of the kids' uncles who said it was all a government conspiracy--not real) when they are dealing with so much death and being forced on lockdown. Except for the virus in this story is a lot scarier and deadlier.

Most would not want to read a book about a pandemic while we are going through one, but this was a good book, with likable characters. And can be enjoyed by young and older adults.

Book Review: Skull Full of Kisses by Michael West

Skull Full of Kisses
by Michael West
Love and evil know no bounds! Turn the page and enter a world of shadow, as Michael West brings together his most disturbing short stories--twisted tales of forbidden desires and ghoulish deeds, where nightmares manifest in the most mundane and unlikely of places... The basement of a Japanese restaurant, where a seductive creature promises comfort to a lonely hitman, if only he will set her free... A ruined city, where survivors of a natural disaster have become prey to something unnatural... An Indiana farmhouse, where a frightened child attempts to fool the Angel of Death... And the darkest regions of space, where a man fights to protect the woman he loves from invaders only he can see... Ten reasons to lock your doors. Ten reasons to keep the lights on. Ten reasons why you may never sleep again.
Praise for Skull Full of Kisses

"(Michael West) gave me nightmares!" ~Anne Boedeker, E! -Entertainment Television

"This is damned serious stuff, and it's scary, suspenseful, and sweat-inducing; but more importantly - perhaps most importantly - it's all disturbing as hell, and cannot be easily forgotten." ~Gary A. Braunbeck, author of Coffin Countyand Mr. Hands (on Dark Harvest)

"Michael West proves himself to be a masterful storyteller, flawless in building momentum, and his skills in characterization match or even often surpass some of the most successful writers in the business." ~Nicholas Grabowsky, author of Halloween 4: the Return of Michael Myers, and The Everborn (on The Wide Game)
Michael West is a horror writer. I know that’s a simple statement but it actually carries a lot of weight. And something that West obviously takes a lot of pride in. In his ten story collection, SKULL FULL OF KISSES, West takes us through different lands and even different times, each one with a nightmare all its own.

There are demons. Ghosts. Aliens. Serial killers. Dinosaurs…freaking dinosaurs. West makes the reader feel like we’re glued to the old late-night horror show on television. I couldn’t wait to get to the next story to see what other monster was waiting for me. What wicked twist was going to grab me and get my heart pounding in my chest? Okay, sure, I guessed a few of the surprise endings, but the journey was more than enough.

As passionate as the creativity is in this collection, West equally proves to be a skilled writer. His stories are tight, no wasted words with excellent pacing. Here is a writer who knows his craft and it allows him to cut loose and have fun with his horror. Even his title shows how playful West is--it comes from the fact at conventions West actually has a skull full of chocolate kisses for fans.

If there is a flaw with the book, it’s in the actual printing itself. My print copy had sections where the print was faded and difficult to read. Hopefully, this isn’t common in other copies but it did distract me and pull me from the stories. Other than that, the quality was top-notch; formatting, blurbs (of which there are plenty), a back section of ads, and a cover that catches the eye.

I had read a few West stories as they’ve appeared in various magazines but it wasn’t until this collection that I was able to see his versatility. In just these ten stories there are traditional campfire horror, Asian horror, Sci-Fi, erotica, Lovecraftian beasts, and splatterpunk gore. Each one is polished to a point, impossible to see any rough patches during West’s career over the years. But what stands out most to me is the pure passion.

Michael West is a horror writer. If you are a fan of the genre, you’ll be happy he has shared this with us.

Book Review: First, We Kill All the Lawyers (Donovan Trait Book 1) by Seelie Kay + giveaway

First, We Kill All the Lawyers (Donovan Trait Book 1)
by Seelie Kay
September 10, 2021
Genre: Humorous Paranormal Romance
Someone is killing lawyers, but a particular vampire lawyer won’t stay dead.

Donovan Trait is a marked man. Flamboyant, stunningly handsome, and notoriously insatiable, his attitude and style belie his skills in the courtroom. No one survives a cross-examination at Donovan’s hands. His knowledge of the law and trial practice has accumulated over the years… and years, of experience. More than three hundred years. You see, when Donovan isn’t seducing judges and juries, he’s a creature of the night. And now that someone has decided that it’s time to kill all lawyers, his lust for attention has set him in the murderer’s sights. The problem is, vampires don’t die. Not easily, anyway. That’s good news for Donovan, not so much for his very human lady love, also a target of the serial killer. Will several unsuccessful attempts on his life expose Donovan’s true nature? Will the killer learn the secret that will guarantee a permanent death? Or will Donovan finally manage to put an end to the killer’s murderous spree and live happily ever after, with his lady love?

Book Trailer:

First, We Kill All the Lawyers is the actual title of a vampire romance by author Seelie Kay. Based on the title alone, I had to read this one. Figuring it would be another vampire read, like most of the rest, I was pleasantly surprised that this saga had a lot of meat on the pages and some new takes on the vampire world.

I never have put much stake into the fact that vampires can't walk around during the day. Maybe live a "normal" human life and blend in. Now, I love the night ones and the sparkly ones, but these vamps have adjusted to sunlight and can walk around anytime they fancy. Which makes kinda more sense to me, if there were real vampires they would need to have that power of walking among us.

The story overall was just fun, with lots of humor mixed in with a solid mystery to solve and characters to fall in love with. The romance is on point, it could have gone down an even steamer path, in my opinion, made more edge out of the encounters. But fangs out, this was a fun read that had me pulling for the characters and wishing for the next installment to hit me right away!

Excerpt:
Donovan’s cell phone pinged. He pulled himself into a small alleyway, away from the stampede trudging back to their workplaces after lunch, and leaned back against a building to read a text. His face screwed up in confusion. The text read, The first thing we do, let’s kill all lawyers! Starting with you!

“What the bloody hell?” he muttered. “Is this some kind of joke?” Donovan’s eyes surveyed his surroundings. He gazed right, then left. It did not appear that someone had made him the focus of their attention. Everyone was scurrying about, like mice in pursuit of a big cheese. “Must be Finley,” he said. “Finley is always plying me with lawyer jokes. He thinks he’s funny.”

Donovan shrugged. Not funny at all. He left the alleyway and re-entered the mass migration on the sidewalk. He approached the crosswalk at Michigan and Superior and emitted a snort of frustration as the light changed and the crosswalk filled with cars. He was bumped hard by someone behind him. Donovan was forced to step into the street to regain his balance. A cab rushed by and narrowly missed clipping his side. Donovan jumped back onto the sidewalk.

A woman screamed and Donovan jerked his head around, trying to see what all the fuss was about. The woman was pointing at him. Donovan frowned and turned away. God save me from simpering females who saw the last issue of City Magazine. Donovan had appeared on the cover after being named as one of Chicago’s most eligible bachelors. Since then, he had learned that the female population was comprised of women of questionable morals and distressing behavior. He was growing weary of the attention. While his colleagues thought it a wise marketing strategy, it had brought him nothing but unwanted female attention. He had become prey.

Vampires were predators. They stalked their victims. Sometimes, they pursued them with a vengeance. That was why he had joined the legal profession. His predilections were well-suited to that particular world. Now, his role had apparently shifted and he was not pleased.

Someone tapped Donovan on the shoulder. “Sir? Are you alright? You’re bleeding. It appears someone stuck a knife into your side.”

Donovan’s mouth gaped and he turned toward the man who had spoken. Then he looked at where the man pointed. There was indeed a knife sticking out of his left side and a stream of his blood was flowing onto the sidewalk. He had a very high threshold of pain. He hadn’t felt the knife thrust into his side. If it wasn’t so appalling, he would be embarrassed. Donovan opened his mouth to reply. Then the pain in his side exploded and his vision dulled. Slowly he slid onto the sidewalk as if he planned to sit on the curb.

Then everything went black.

Book Review: The Accidental Gatekeeper (The Accidental Midlife Trilogy Book One) by Carla Rehse + giveaway

The Accidental Gatekeeper (The Accidental Midlife Trilogy Book One)
by Carla Rehse
06/14/21
Genre: Paranormal Women’s Fiction
Number of pages: 299
Word Count: 82,880
Cover Artist: Damonza
Turning the big four-five isn't a problem for Everly Popa—it’s everything else in her life that's gone to hell in a handbasket.

It's bad enough that Everly's drug-selling husband is in jail and her adult daughter blames her for the situation. But now the FBI wants her to turn witness, while her husband's criminal friends want to keep her permanently silent. With no other safe haven, Everly returns to her hometown. A place she hasn't visited in twenty-seven years. And didn't leave under the best of circumstances.

It’s not that Everly has a problem with her hometown, exactly, but since it sits next to Hell’s Gate, there's bound to be a few issues. Like the archaic rules set by the angels who run the town. Or the fact that the townsfolk feel Everly abandoned her duties as one of the members of the town's founding families. But between celestial politics or getting gunned down by a drug cartel, Everly decides to chance finding sanctuary back home.

After a little good-versus-evil stunt at the town's border, Everly is let back in and for the first five minutes, things are great. Everly's mom hasn't started nagging and she has a whole bottle of wine to herself. But after minute six, all hell breaks loose. Everly gets bitten by a hellhound, faints in front of her hot-and-single old high school boyfriend, and accidentally becomes the town’s Gatekeeper to Hell. A job she never wanted, isn't trained for, and can't shake off like gum stuck to her shoe. And as much as she's flipping out, the celestial ruling body aren't too pleased about it either.

Before Everly can take a deep breath and figure a way out of this mess, an angel gets killed, humans go missing and the town shuts its magical borders. Now Everly is trapped inside with dying angels, rampaging demons, and a witch with a murderous agenda. Plus, an archangel and his army surround the city and are itching to contain the town's problems with a heaven-sent big boom. The only way out is for Everly to learn how to use her newly acquired Gatekeeper powers. But with no handbook provided, there's a snowball's chance in hell she'll figure it out in time.

The Accidental Gatekeeper is a story about a soccer softball mom, who is just trying to do the best she can for her daughter while the rest of the world, including heaven and hell, throws every spanner, screwdriver, and hammer in her path!

What I Liked
The premise might not be exactly unique but readers get a fun book out of it. It's something that after having read so many books, I still find those featuring protagonists who aren't teenagers or in their twenties rare and refreshing! In addition, readers get the full-body experience of what it means to be thirty and above. Throwing your back, knees that refuse to bend, and other such details made the character feel genuine.

The story's humorous and keeps you interested throughout. Decent worldbuilding too, with some new quirks that surprised me--like weres, vamps, and pixies being hellspawn.

Drool-worthy male lead, who was the same age as the MC, and didn't behave like an alpha-male at all. He supported the woman he secretly loved rather than try to control her.

The over-the-top metaphors might not enthrall every reader out there, but they sure made me laugh. My favorite was pearl-clutchy, which the heroine used to describe the celestial council's behavior. It was purrfect!

What I Didn't Like
Having been raised the way the heroine had been, her level of cluelessness didn't make a lot of sense. Sure, some things came to her instinctively once she wore the mantle of the Gatekeeper. But the other stuff? She should already have known about it. Even with the misogyny that the celestial assheads practiced, Luna managed to be resourceful and a font of knowledge. Our heroine? Not so much. Also, she kept running into every fray without weapons or a plan. Someone mentioned she came off as a cross between Charley Davidson and Bridget Jones, and it's a good description.

Even though the MC was running from her problems in the mortal world, we don't see any of the parties intruding in this installment. It was purely supe-drama from the start to the finish. I understand this is just the first book, but threatening situations are only meaningful if they come with consequences.

All in all, a book that I enjoyed reading. Would love to try book 2 too!

Most of my go-to series are 3 starrers
*No rating - wasn't my genre/dnf'd so rating it would be unfair
1 sheep - won't be picking up another book in a series  again
2 sheep - average read with overused tropes and cliches. Will give the author another try/only continuing because of OCD, so must finish a series
2.5 sheep - liked the book but was put off because it was overly long/illtreatment of a character the author had me invest in and so on.
3 sheep - enjoyed the book but have reservations because I expected to be wowed and wasn't
4 sheep - was unputdownable
5 sheep - formed an emotional connection, will read the heck outta this series

Excerpt
CHAPTER ONE
When all the good choices have disappeared faster than kids at chore time
If eighteen was the age of exciting self-discovery, then forty-five was the weary age of having zero shits left to give.

What did it matter if my husband of twenty years was rotting in federal jail? And that our chiropractic clinic had gone belly up, leaving me jobless? Or that my friends had turned from “we’ll help hide a body” to “we’ve got your back until the reporters hit our lawn?” I also didn’t care that the DEA had frozen our joint bank accounts and seized our assets. I never liked that house anyway.

Homeless. Jobless. Friendless.

Add in a pickup truck, beer, and an old dog and it would be the most pathetic country song played on the tiniest fiddle ever. I gritted my teeth as the wipers shrieked across the windshield. Nothing like driving through a late-October downpour to add to your misery, and the constantly patched roads in this part of Central Texas didn’t handle rain well.

My phone rang with its cheerful tone that I kept forgetting to change. Sadie’s name lit up on the display, and I almost knocked it off the dashboard holder while hitting the speaker button.

“Sadie? Is everything okay? How’s Laney?” I really hoped the trembling in my voice wasn’t audible. My daughter hadn’t spoken to me in two months, refusing to answer my calls or respond to my texts. Her girlfriend had even gone so far as to block me on her social media.

“Mom? Where are you? God, this connection sucks.” Her voice had a recognizable anxious edge to it. I wanted to ask if she was taking her meds, but at twenty-one Sadie hated coddling. “Someone needs to talk to you.”

“What?” I eased onto the shoulder of the road, then placed the truck into park. “Who?”

“Mrs. Collins? Uh, Everly Collins? This is Sam Duncan, your husband’s attorney? We really must discuss your husband’s case.”

I glanced at the clock on my dash: 10:33 p.m. Duncan was raking in some serious OT.

“What the hell are you doing with my daughter?”

“Mrs. Collins?” He lowered his voice. “I know you’ve been advised not to speak with me. But you really need to before certain other people do. We can meet anywhere you want.”

“Listen to me, you scum licker. Tell my husband and his thug buddies to leave my kid out of their mess. I’m not afraid of their flaccid threats and won’t be intimidated.” I slapped at the phone to turn it off, sending it careening to the passenger floorboard, out of reach and therefore away from temptation.

I didn’t have the money to replace the stupid thing, but the desire to take out my frustration on the helpless and innocent electronic device was strong.

Part of me wanted to turn the vehicle around, race to Sadie’s apartment in Austin, and kick the crap out of that attorney. But I knew the truth. Sadie had taken her dad’s side and was angry I’d snitched on him. She would do whatever she could to get him out of trouble. What was a little money laundering for drug dealers, after all? She might have my dark hair and eyes, but unfortunately, she inherited her father’s defective moral compass.

A lesson for all the kiddies: choose the sperm donor for your progeny well.
