Book Review: Blood Binds (Wyrd Blood Book 3) by Donna Augustine

Ryker calls it an accident. I call it another betrayal. He didn't want me to leave but didn't fight to keep me by his side. Wronged magically and devastated emotionally, I exile myself to another country, Dorley. Now I perform tricks under a tent, my mystical gifts a common sideshow.

Just as I’m accepting my self-inflicted fate, Ryker makes a move that forces me back to the Valley. But an ancient evil is stirring and follows me. With magical stones disappearing, the power I possess within makes me a target. Old hurts have to be put aside and enemies must unite or an evil strong enough to destroy us all will be unleashed.

Bugs likes to fight with Ryker and when he steals her magic again by mistake it’s the last straw and she leaves for Dorley. Knife would love to make Bugs his, but she is still carrying a candle for Ryker even if she can’t admit it out loud. An evil force is following Bugs and she’s not sure how she will survive it, let alone keep it from destroying everyone and everything around.

Praise to Augustine for another exceptional book. Everyone has favorites, but I know that when I am reading a book and can’t keep the smile off my face that it’s truly a good read. Her female characters are always strong, and occasionally stubborn making them easy to relate to and her male characters usually have a strong ego and tend to lean towards “their way or no way” attitudes. Her supporting characters are nothing to sneeze at either, with quirks all their own. I hope this won’t be the last in an amazing series!

Donna Augustine was an odd child, had a brief moment of conformity in early adulthood and then decided to embrace her craziness as the years rolled by. It's her inner crazy that she credits with coming up with the ideas for her books. One part hypochondriac, a few dashes of paranoia, topped with a sliver of uptight and delivered with a relaxed flair, she kicked the proverbial box down the yellow brick road a couple years ago to embrace her true self.

She can be reached by a carrier pigeon, set free in a south by north direction, where she resides in Neverland with her two Siberian cats. Cats who, by the way, aren't as hypoallergenic as she believed they'd be.

One monster wants my soul. One man wants my magic. Me? I want to be left alone to live my life out like a dull, one of the lucky people who were born devoid of magic. But that won’t happen because being born a Wyrd Blood gives me two choices in life: ruler or slave.

I’d rather die than be a slave and I’m not cut out to rule. Instead, I’ve been hiding out in the Valley. Life is pretty good here, with food in my belly and a warm bed to sleep. If I didn’t get harassed constantly by Ryker, the man who wants my magic, it might be good enough to lull me into thinking life could continue on like this forever.

UntiI I get a message from Bones, the monster who owns my soul…

Bugs has always had to fight for everything she has ever gotten, so why should her soul and magic be any different? A deal she had no control over, promised her to a monster and the one man who promised to help her only seems to want to control her and her magic.

Bugs is a funny girl with plenty of snark and attitude. She is bound and determined that no one will tell her what to do and that she doesn’t need anyone, except maybe her best friend Ruck. She reminds me of an immature teenager that trusts no one, knows everything and is never wrong, which is what makes her such an endearing character. Given a little bit of time you can see the woman she has the potential to become. Ryker is one of those men, who gives away nothing and has perfected his poker face. He is arrogant, annoying, as well as caring and kind. The sparks that fly between Ryker and Bugs are spectacular opening up all kinds of possibilities for the next book.

Book Review: Wyrd Blood by Donna Augustine

Wyrd Blood

Sometimes I wonder what life was like before magic burst into existence, before the Magical War of 810 destroyed our world. What it was like before there were Wyrd Blood, or we were forced into hiding.

And that's what I've been doing for years, hiding me and my crew. But that's about to end. My crew is starving and things are getting dire. When I get desperate enough to try and steal from Ryker, one of the toughest men in these parts, things go bad and my Wyrd Blood origins are outed.

But it's not all bad. Ryker can help keep me alive from the mysterious illness that's been plaguing me. He can also feed my crew. The only thing I have to do in return is start another war.

The Magical War of 810 destroyed the world and started a bid for power. People with magic had Wyrd Blood and were hunted to either indenture the person into a high-powered person’s service or killed to gain their power neither being a way to live your life. Bugs has been hiding since she was 7 and runs a small crew. They depend on her to feed and keep them safe and times are getting extremely tough. Bugs decides the only way to help her crew it to steal from Ryker but things go badly and she’s outed as a Wryd Blood. Bugs has to decide if making a deal with Ryker is the best way to keep her crew alive as well as herself.

In a world where people in power are greedy and selfish, this story makes you think about the troubles in society where different castes of people struggle while others do not. Even though I like to live in fantasy through books sometimes it is nice to see that even in a fantasy world it relates to reality. Augustine always delivers a new and exciting story that is an easy read and you do not want to miss this one!
