Book 5 of 5: Wings of Ink
“You know I will devour you, Ayna.”

Ayna has escaped Ephegos’s claws—but war is far from over.

As the rebel forces rise and the King of Tavras readies weapons that could shatter the fairylands, the battle for Askarea begins to burn. Crows and fairies alone won’t be enough to hold back the storm. And with ancient bargains unraveling and magic twisting loyalty into chains, not every ally will be free to stand beside their queen.

To save both her kingdoms, Ayna must do the impossible: unite fractured realms, survive betrayal, and outwit a tyrant with nothing left to lose. But as war threatens to consume the world she’s sworn to protect, one truth becomes clear—power always demands a price.

And this time, the cost may be everything.

Realm of Crows is the heart-racing finale to the bestselling high-stakes, heart-break epic romantasy Wings of Ink series—perfect for fans of Quicksilver, From Blood and Ash, and A Court of Thorns and Roses.

Excerpt: Stone of Doubt (Stones of Iona Book 5) by Margaret Izard + giveaway

In the absence of doubt, only faith is found.

Stone of Doubt (Stones of Iona Book 5)

by Margaret Izard
Genre: Time Travel, Paranormal Romance
A human with Fae powers living like an oddball has its ups and downs until Evie MacDougall’s dream Fae boy pops back into her life after she thought another was “the one.” One dark and devilish, the other her long-lost love. Evil forces trap her for a magic Fae stone, but which man can she trust?

As a teen prophesied to be Fae king, Aodhán viewed the girl of his dreams through an Eye of Ra. Once, he risked all to help Evie MacDougall find a magic Fae stone, only to end up imprisoned. Kept from his true love for years, he finds her at risk from an evil Fae hunting a magic stone.

Is a single vow strong enough to save true love, to save the human and Fae realms?

Evie threw open Kat’s door, allowing it to bang against the wall.
Kat rolled over. “Kind of early, even for ye, Evie.”
Evie strode to Kat’s closet, flipping through each item. She didn’t say a word, fearful she’d give away something, anything that told her best friend she’d visited the Fae realm.
Kat sat up. “What are ye wearing? Yer hair’s lighter. I like it!”
Evie glanced down, forgetting the Fae gown, and shrugged. “Something for a play.” She cringed inside at lying to her friend but couldn’t tell anyone she was the one the Fae fable referred to. Not yet, at least.
Evie flipped back and forth between a crop top and a skirt. Kat’s chest was like her ma’s, larger than Evie’s, but Evie’s hips were bigger. Her clothes had to fit. Evie didn’t have time to go shopping. She wasn’t ready for the idea of selecting new clothing that she’d never bothered to glance at, let alone try on.
Grabbing the pink crop top and gray pencil skirt, Evie felt comfortable with it being long enough to cover her knees. She had to start somewhere. If she wore a miniskirt to work, ha! Evie envisioned falling, carrying ale, and flashing her personals to all of Maggie’s Bar. That’d be a hoot.
As Kat called after her, she strode from the room. “Sure, ye can borrow some of my clothes. Thanks for asking!”
In her room, Evie stripped the Fae gown and hung it, carefully placing it in the back of her closet. She slipped on a bra and undies and donned the crop top lifting her arms to ensure her boobs stayed covered. With the skirt on, she examined herself in the mirror.
“Nice. Not yer usual colors.” Kat leaned on the frame, yawning. “The form-fitting cotton looks good.”
Evie turned right, then left, checking her reflection. It needed something more. She moved to her closet, examining her belts. The skinny suspenders, that’s what it needed. Attaching those, she turned before the mirror and nodded.
As she sat to put on her black boots, Kat collapsed on her bed. “Why the change?” She rolled over. “Not that I’m complaining, but pink with light gray and form-fitting cotton isn’t yer norm.”
Kat sat up. “Manix! It has to be. Ye have the hots for Manix!”
Evie shrugged as she brushed her long hair out. This was good. If they thought she spent her time with Manix, they wouldn’t figure out she’d spent most of the evening in the Fae realm with Aodhán.
She placed her hair in pigtails and began braiding each one. She had to keep her hair up for her waitressing, but after work, when she went out with Manix, the braids would make her hair wavy when she let it out. Perfect.
Speaking of Fae realms, “Where’s Ewan and Doug?”
Kat stood and went to the door. “In bed as usual. They come back later and later each trip.” She sighed. “They should be careful.”
Evie checked the clock. Dash, it’s almost eleven am. Her shift started at noon, and Manix said he’d pick her up at nine when her shift ended.
She grabbed her leather jacket and went past Kat, who held her arm. “Do ye know what ye are doing with Manix? Ewan mentioned that some say he has a temper he can’t control.”
Evie pulled her arm away. “It’s nothing. I’m sure exaggeration.”
Evie ran to the door as Kat called after her, “Sure, don’t mind me, yer BFF. I only just arrived, and ye are off every evening with a man.” She sighed dramatically. “I’ll stay in with a movie again.”
Evie stopped at the opened door. “Soon, ye and I will go bar hopping. Introduce ye around.”
Kat chuckled, “Hold ye to it.”
Evie wasn’t certain what this day held. She’d not dated many men as none seemed to appeal to her. Ewan said it was because she compared them all to her Fae boy, and maybe she had. A human could never beat out the attraction a Fae held. It wasn’t a mere myth but the total truth.

Will definitely look for further books by this author and series.

I'm overjoyed to be back in this amazing world building series

I highly recommend this series to all who love fantasy with a twist, adventure, surprises, and the occasional human, aside from one of our human heroes of course

story manages to be more intimate than ever

This book gets dark and gritty right from the beginning and does not shy away

the kind of story that will drag you in and keep you reading

Well paced, good balance between action and character development

Such is the joy of reading the works of an excellent writer with a great imagination and the ability to tell an absolutely fascinating story.

Excerpt: Chapter One
I have watched hundreds of humans suffer through their transformation from human to Old One. Some say I am an expert in this, but I would dispute that. I don’t think there are any experts. Too little is known about the transformation process for anyone to claim the status. The experience I have lets me ease my patients’ agony a little, and avoids harming them in the process. But no skill of mine changes the course of the transformation by a single micron.

I watched Henry Magorian writhe and twist on the bed I stood beside, reviewing my uselessness, and finding it ironic that I was so helpless. Henry was Benjamin Magorian’s older brother, and a slimey wretch of a man. Yet he was my patient. I was required to give him the best care possible. His family had flown us out to Montreal from Toledo, Spain, on a private and very expensive jet, for this purpose.

Pain is pain. I hated seeing the man claw at the expensive sheets, the tendons in his neck and wrists standing out like ships’ hawsers. He wore only boxer briefs and his entire body was bathed in sweat. He had been sweating for hours, now. We had changed the sheets twice.
I made myself look away. Watching him helped no one. I put the stethascope on the tray table the family had thoughtfully provided and looked at Jaimie.

She held her hands out over Henry’s body, just above the thrashing shoulders, concentrating on whatever information travelled through her palms. I wasn’t certain what she could detect, for the mystery of fae magic was not readily shared by any of them.

Jaimie wore her thick pale hair up in a pony tail at the back of her head, which allowed her pointed ears to be seen. Normally, she was careful to drape her hair over her ears when among humans, but we’d long since passed that consideration. We’d been in this room for nearly thirty hours, and members of the family had stopped stepping in to check on their cousin/uncle.

She held her flawless face in a stiff, neutral expression. She was not allowing herself to show how worried she was. But I’d had seen too many transitions. I was worried myself.

“He’s fighting it,” I said.

Jaimie looked up, then back down at her patient. “Yes.”

It was the first time either of us had said it, although I think we’d both guessed as soon as we’d walked into the elegant pale blue and cream room. The family had bundled all three of us, including Ben, onto a jet on standby at Toledo’s small private landing field, the moment Henry Magorian had shown the first signs of transition. It had taken nine hours to reach Montreal, plus an hour at either end for local travel and ten minutes of lightning-speed packing.

So we had first seen Henry over eleven hours after he had begun transitioning, and we’d been here, save for small cat naps in the bedroom next door, for thirty hours.

Forty hours, more or less, and he still showed no physical changes.

Henry kicked and moaned, then curled up into a tight ball.

“I can take away the pain. A little, at least,” Jaimie said. Her voice was strained. She had slept less than I. Fae could reduce pain by breathing in bad humours—which was not a medieval conceit for them. It wasn’t as effective as an angel breathing on the patient, but it did work.
“You know the danger in that.” We’d both learned that reducing the pain too much let the patient relax. The transition required that they move, so that the metabolism was elevated, allowing the organs to evolve. The extreme fever was another function of the transition. It was the mechanism that changed the patient’s DNA expression, the key to the transition. Lowering the body temperature could suspend the transition, too.

Jaimie put her fingers to her temples. She had no medical training in her human history. She had been a soldier in the British army. It was only her transition to a fae that made health work feasible. She was less used to watching a patient suffer than I, although she would always find it stressful, no matter how used to it she became. We all did, despite a hardening of one’s empathy once exposed to too much of it.

“He should have changed by now.” Her voice wavered. “I don’t know of anyone taking this long.”

“I have seen some cases last this long,” I said grimly. I didn’t add the remainder of that statement—that everyone who had fought their transition for this long did not survive. Jaimie didn’t need that additional worry. It was quite likely she was well aware of this statistic. I just didn’t want to bring it to the forefront of her thoughts.

“Is there anything else we can do?” Her wonderful silvery eyes were red-rimmed, but still worth staring into. Even after thirty hours of hard work and worry, even wearing the travel creased clothing she’d arrived in and slept in, she looked wonderful.

I pushed away the betraying thought and tried to find an answer to her question, for the fear in her voice was real. It wasn’t fear of death. She had been a soldier and now was a fae who dispensed magical healing. She was accustomed to death.

I knew the source of her fear. This was Henry Magorian. Ben’s brother. Jaimie did not want to let Ben down. She wanted to save Henry for him.

So did I, even though I had learned to loathe Henry not long after meeting him.

I’d sent Ben out of the room hours ago. His pacing and his unhelpful suggestions, along with his anxious questions every time Henry moaned or moved, had not helped either Jaimie or I concentrate. As far as I knew, Ben was in the next room and, as it was two in the morning, Toledo time, he was probably sleeping, even though bright summer sunlight streamed through the windows.

It was eight in the evening, Quebec time, on a blazingly hot day, but none of the external weather reached us, for this house had a controlled environment kept at a pleasant twenty-three degrees with just the right degree of humidity. The window of the room we were in had remained closed and sealed against the heat outside. The view from the window was magnificent, for the house stood high upon the exlsuive Summit area, with a jaw-dropping view of the Old City and the St. Lawrence river twinkling on the horizon.

The Magorian family could afford the luxury of whole-house environmental controls, just as they could afford private transatlantic flights, and bribes to ease an Old One through two nations’ customs and immigration border checks.

Ben had insisted that they make the arrangements to bring Jaimie into the country. He had argued that Jaimie could help Henry as much as I could. The family, desparate as they were, had complied, although I had no idea what it had taken to make it happen. Canada was particular about who they let into their country, especially when it came to the Old Ones. Unlike Spain, Canada had so far refused refugees, although there were many unofficial refugees flooding across the Canada/United Stated border. Canada was not xenophobic, though. It was the first country in the world to acknowledge the Old Ones legally.

Here, Old Ones were not automatically considered “dead” after turning. They were in a legal limbo, still, but the assets they’d held as a human, and might acquire as an Old One, were also held in legal stasis, rather than passed onto heirs. It was a half-step toward giving Old Ones full citizenship, or at least residency, and the rights and obligations that came with it. The government was still arguing the point in Ottawa.

But Jaimie, despite a lack of indentity documentation, had merely received a nod of acknowledgement from the customs official who had stamped Ben’s and my passports. I had spotted a photograph of Jaimie attached to his clipboard.

She stared at me now, hope showing in her eyes, as I appeared to be thinking of another way to save Henry Magorian.

I desparately wanted to come up with a solution. I wanted her to look at me with relief and gratitude. I wanted her to….well, that was never going to happen. But still, I wanted to please her.

So I made myself consider every single possibility. What had we not done for this horrible man? What else could we try?

I stared down at his curled up body. If he continued to fight the transition, it would not end well. Did he know that? Did he resent the idea of becoming an Old One so passionately, that he was putting up this marathon resistance?

That gave me an idea. I looked at Jaimie. “It’s a long shot.”

“I don’t care.”

That was exactly what I had expected her to say. “That thing Ben did, in New York, with the proto-wizard?”

“The mind meld?” She didn’t smile at the pop culture name we’d adopted for whatever it was that Ben had done to the man, as she usually did. She was a huge Star Trek fan, which I found, well, illlogical, given her former profession. Or perhaps that was exactly why she liked the show so much. A professional soldier would appreciate a peaceful utopia. “What of it?” she added.

“If he could reach Henry, he could tell him to stop fighting the transition.”
Jaimie looked down at Henry, who certainly couldn’t hear us now. “Do you think he doesn’t already know that?”

“He quite likely does know that. But Henry likes to get his own way.” He’d fooled Ben into signing over his portion of the family inheritence because he didn’t like Ben’s choice of lifestyle. “If Ben could appeal to him, let him see…” I made myself say it. “Let him see that if he doesn’t let this happen, he’ll die. Henry’s sense of self-preservation might kick in.”

Jaimie pressed her lips together. She hadn’t met Henry, but I’m sure Ben had shared with her the reason why he had to rely on his income as a wizard, when his family was so well off.

“I’ll go and get him,” she said. “A long shot is better than the nothing we’ve got without it.”

EXCERPT:
Prologue
I dial Jumper’s number for the third time. When it goes to voicemail, I growl. It’s just like the jackass to stand us up. Crux, Tobin, Jumper, and I all had plans to go to Sapp’s Coffee Shop for breakfast, but it was two now, and I’d heard nothing from him all day. I stretch and yawn. If I’d known he was going to flake, I would have slept in.

“Becca, mail for you,” Andy says, grinning and tossing me a handful of college packets. I don’t order them, he does. I flip through them. “Northwestern? You think the four of us are going to Illinois?” I raise a brow.

“I don’t care where you go, as long as you don’t end up a statistic,” my brother grumbles. “Where are dumb and dumber?”

“Making food with Adina,” I nod toward the kitchen.

“I know they are your Tethers, but look at me and Adina… we waited, and we survived. You don’t have to rush things. Go to school first, Becca. Claim one another later. Real love can stand still for five minutes.” Andy stands and leaves me with that.

I grab my phone and call Jumper again. When it goes to voicemail this time, I leave him a quick voice message. “Thanks for canceling, drummerboy. Next time, actually let me know you aren’t showing.”

My phone rings as soon as I hang up. Thinking it’s Jumper finally calling, I answer.

“Hello, shit-for-brains–” I start.

Lilah cuts me off. “Is he with you!?”

“Is who with me?” I ask.

“Jump. Is Jump with you?” she asks, tension high in her voice.

I shake my head, though she can’t see it. “No. He’s not with me. He stood me up this morning.”

“When did you last talk to him?” Lilah asks quickly.

“Two days ago,” I answer with my heart racing. I just know something is wrong.

“He’s missing, Becca. Jump is missing. No one has seen him in two days,” Lilah sobs.

If not for Katrina’s ability, healing talent Derek Forester would have been trapped in a mission gone wrong. He hadn’t expected to see Katrina again, but he had never forgotten the way she made him feel. He’d done the right thing, but seeing her again made him question the wisdom of that choice.

Almost as soon as he arrives, mysterious entities begin plaguing them. Someone is trying to keep them together and engineered his rescue to Richmond. It has the touch of the mysterious new entity Whisper, but why?

Soon they are on the run, keeping one step ahead from energy beings that find them no matter where they go. When a crisis triggers a new, hidden talent between them, it becomes clear that this entire situation has been a setup. Right from the beginning.

Derek caught Hannah raising her eyebrows, focusing her attention on his jeans pocket. He took out a slip of paper that read “Roberto Bagnoli. Middle management at Night Stars, though he thinks he’s higher than that. Quillan’s fiancée’s uncle. The guy with him is muscle. I’m not sure of his name.”

Nice. Hannah must have tucked that there when she froze time and checked out the new arrivals. He hadn’t even seen her move. Then again, that was the point of a chrono talent. Katrina checked her cell phone and glanced at Hannah.

Roberto stood over their table. The muscle who came in with him whispered something that had the occupant at the next table taking his plate and retreating to the counter. Roberto sat at the next table without waiting for it to be cleared, his attention still on Quillan. The head of Universe picked up his fork and began eating his breakfast burrito without conceding the man’s stare.

“This is the guy, eh? The one who stirred up things this morning.” Roberto said the words with a dismissive wave.

Derek shot Quillan a glance, but his new boss made no comment. “You say that like I had a choice.” He nodded to Roberto. Still Quillan did nothing. “I’m Derek.”

He flipped the paper over and read “shadow talent” and nodded at Hannah.

“Do you have a last name, Derek?”

Quillan’s beard twitched.

“I do.” Derek let the words stay there, also lapsing into silence.

Quillan cleared his throat. “This is Derek Forester. News travels fast.”

“It’s been hours since he ‘arrived’ here,” Roberto said with that same sneer on his face. “Plenty of time for me to find out what I needed to.”

“Lucinda let you off the leash?”

Both Katrina and Derek glanced at Quillan while Roberto glowered. “Local Night Stars head. Roberto works for her.” Quillan stopped talking and took a bite of his burrito while Roberto sputtered. The muscle still said nothing, but that was the job of an enforcer—to be intimidating.

Derek was not intimidated.

“I came to introduce myself,” Roberto said, the waver in his voice lending the lie little credence.

“You were sent to figure out what happened. Wouldn’t you like to learn the details?” Quillan stared Roberto down, his face hard.

Hannah’s too-friendly voice broke into the tableau. “The boss here doesn’t like Roberto, and it’s well deserved. He tried to kidnap Quillan’s fiancée when she decided she didn’t want to be a part of Night Stars anymore and defected to Universe. Roberto, and Night Stars, made it difficult.”

Roberto waved a hand over the table. The waiter came over to say something, but Roberto did something and the man froze. Perhaps he had more command over shadows than Derek had assumed. Derek couldn’t be sure. Nor did he care. Shadows couldn’t hurt him. Humanity did enough of that.

Claire can’t remember a time when writing wasn’t part of her life. Growing up, she used to write stories with her friends. As a teenager she started out reading fantasy and science fiction, but her diet quickly changed to romance and happily-ever-after’s. A native of Massachusetts and cold weather, she left all that behind to move to the sun and fun of California, but has always lived no more than twenty miles from the ocean.

In college she studied acting with a minor in creative writing. In hindsight she should have flipped course studies. Before she was published, she sold books on eBay and discovered some of her favorite authors by sampling the goods, which was the perfect solution. Claire has many book-irons in the fire, most notably her urban fantasy series, The Elementals’ Challenge series, but writes contemporary and shifter romances as well as.

While she’s not a movie mogul or actor, she does work in the film industry with her office firmly situated in the 90210 district of Hollywood. Prone to breaking out into song, she is quick on feet and just as quick with snappy dialogue. In addition to writing she does animal rescue, reads, and goes to movies. She loves to hear from fans, so feel free to drop her a line.

Book Review: You Light Up My Midlife Crisis (Good To The Last Death Book 5) by Robyn Peterman

You Light Up My Midlife Crisis (Good To The Last Death Book 5)
by Robyn Peterman

Pages: 268
Midlife is definitely a journey. The road has massive potholes.
And the crisis… it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Being forty is supposed to be freaking fabulous not fatal.

Taking on a daunting new job minus the description isn’t the smartest move I’ve ever made, even if it was to save a friend. Hopefully, it doesn’t turn out to be the stupidest… or deadliest.

Why can’t things stay the way they were? I love my old job. Supergluing ghosts back together and solving their issues is its own reward. Not to mention, I’m seriously good at it. Although, I must say, I’m ridiculously excited for the new Death Counselor’s arrival in nine months...

Adding to my problems, there are four new angels in town who are riding my butt and judging every move I make. Literally. Who knew destroying one Immortal could cause me so much trouble? If I’m found guilty, I’ll be pushing up daisies.

Luckily, my nutty friends have my back and the Grim Reaper has my heart. What could possibly go wrong?

Nothing is impossible. I am living proof. Let’s just hope I live to prove it.

Most people do not take a job without having a job description at least but not Daisy, she will do anything for those she loves and that includes taking a job that she knows absolutely nothing about. On top of that, she is super excited for the new Death Counselor’s arrival in just about nine months. If she didn’t have enough to deal with, there are four new angels in town who are driving her crazy!

Daisy is the kind of friend you dream of. She has your back, no matter what, and will do almost anything for you. Her little group of friends and family have given her what she needs, and Gideon is the soul mate she did not know she needed.

One of the funniest, easiest-to-read series I have read in a very long time.

Book Review: Shadowspell Academy: Year of the Chameleon (The Culling Trials Book 5) by Shannon Mayer

Shadowspell Academy: Year of the Chameleon
(The Culling Trials Book 5)
by Shannon Mayer
March 30, 2021
Pages: 314
You Don’t Choose The Academy. The Academy Chooses You.

The Shadowkiller is back.

And he is hunting me down like a dog in the streets of New York City using every tool and ally he has—including people I once trusted.

I have never been so alone in my life, and yet if I turn to my friends that puts a target on their backs too. Which means I have to keep running.

So, I do what I know, and I set myself to finding the trail of breadcrumbs that will lead me to the one who is still pulling the strings.

Frost. A Chameleon just like me. Just like the Shadowkiller. Worse, she’s seeking out my friends to pick them off, one by one. To drain their lives in order to feed hers.

To stop her, I have to find her—a task easier said than done in a city this size.

What I don’t expect to find is a truth that this world and its secrets run far deeper, and far darker than I could have ever suspected.

But is any of that going to stop me?

Not a chance.

The Shadowkiller has surfaced again, and he is hunting Wild down in the streets of New York with the help of someone Wild had trusted. She wants to turn to her friends for help but every time she does that, she puts a bigger target on their back so she does the only thing she can to keep them safe. If Wild can keep everyone safe from the Shadowkiller and Frost, two of the most dangerous Chameleons known then maybe just maybe she can find a way to not become like them.

The connection that Wild has with her crew is a connection that most would love to have. Each of them is unique in their own way and with the strength of each other, they can arise to any occasion. This series is a fun one to read.

Excerpt: Kendra’s Point of View

“Thank you for your assistance,” Derek acknowledged the man who guided us to the morgue.

“Now, I’d like this entire room cleared for at least an hour. Your morgue director can verify that order.” Derek nodded, and as he turned toward me, our guide moved away to the two working coroners, escorting them out of the room.

“Dang, this place reminds me of places in the dark plane.” Jenna stood in the center of the room and spun a slow circle. “It’s almost like I can feel Bertellia’s presence, even though I know that woman is gone forever.”

Once everyone cleared the room, I went to work crushing and mixing up the concoction of herbs in a small burning pot. “I can see the film that cocoons the body you mentioned.” I lit the herbs, allowing a quick flame. Then I blew out the little fire and left the blended ingredients smoldering. As I waved the pot over the body, I said the ritual words. Jenna and Derek joined in the mantra, repeating it with me two more times to break the bond holding Mr. Mead’s soul.

A massive pop, deep enough to shake the floor, startled me. Jenna screamed. Derek jumped in front of me, pushing my body back. “Grab your blades. Mine’s vibrating as if it wants to act on its own.” He grabbed his dagger (the one that NaNa Rosa had given to everyone on our team for protection and guidance against evil spirits from the dark plane) out of the sheath tucked into the back of his pants.

Jenna slipped hers from the sheath strapped to her thigh.

The film surrounding Mr. Mead had disappeared, and the oozing, dark entity that rose out of him charged the air with a distinct acrid odor that immediately gagged me.

I grabbed a wastebasket and threw up.

“Wow, you actually tossed your cookies, Sparky.” Jenna stared at me. “Are you sick?” She stood next to me, dagger in her hand. “Come on, woman, we need you now.”

“Rotten eggs, Kendra. Do you have your dagger in your hand?” Derek’s full attention remained on the grizzly form of leaking pustule bumps and dripping saliva.

I puked again, and my stomach continued to buck and roll. My protection sigil burned, telling me this guy came from the dark plane and would love to feed off our energy. I had tucked the blade in my bag with the herbs. Right now, that satchel lay on the floor about three feet to my right. Gagging and swallowing, I inched toward the bag to hold off the inevitable next wave of nausea.

The entity pulled itself entirely out of Mead’s body, red eyes gawking at us. It caught my movement, and a wretched toothy smile spread across its disgusting thick, slimy lips. The horrendous monster stood on the opposite side of Mead and stepped toward me through the gurney and Mead’s body as if wading through water.

“Sparky, get your dagger!” Jenna readied to throw.

“You look tasty, you’re first,” it rasped and stretched a claw at me, snapping its sharp nails.

Derek and Jenna threw their blades, hitting the evil creeper in the heart and slowing its progress toward me.

I dove for my bag, and the hilt of my dagger snugged into my hand. I yanked it out and flung it with a snap of my wrist. The blade found its mark and sunk into the entity’s heart beside the other two daggers. A vicious scream howled out, dropping Derek and me to our knees with hands covering our ears. I watched as it burned from the inside out and turned into white ash that disappeared, leaving Mr. Mead’s spirit staring at us.

“Where the hell am I?” He looked from Derek to me to Jenna and back at Derek. Then his gaze wandered around the room. “Am I inside a morgue?” His mouth dropped open when he saw his body on the gurney. “Am I dead?”

“I’m so sorry to tell you this, but yes, you died. We don’t know how. Can you remember anything that happened?” I didn’t want to force him, but his anxious shaking took a drastic turn as he stared at our daggers lying beside his feet.

“Did you guys kill me?” His image faltered into momentary static, but then he restabilized into a vivid body, appearing alive. “I want answers.” His lips pinched together, and then his eyes wandered to his dead body on the gurney. He slumped and looked at Derek. “What will my husband do?”

I glanced at Derek and watched his eyes widen.

“Let us know who your significant other is, and we’ll inform him of your passing.” Jenna stepped closer to him.

Mr. Mead huffed. “What would you say? Even I don’t know how I died.”

“We believe it had something to do with Sassy Blaze.” Derek moved beside Jenna, and I followed.

“All I remember is heading to the prison wing to check on the prisoners there. I noticed one guard sleeping beside the door, totally against protocol, so I kicked his foot to awaken him. Then I noticed a green powdery substance around his nose and wondered if he was on drugs. That’s all I recall, other than getting slammed against the wall and hearing the iron door slide open. That normally happened for my prisoner check, but I don’t remember anything after that. I blacked out.” His eyes went wide. “Did anyone look at surveillance?”

“The monitors recorded static in that cell block. That’s why I’m asking you.” Derek took a couple steps to stand directly in front of Mr. Mead. “Sassy Blaze hung herself in her cell. That got caught on surveillance and then her body disappeared. Do you know anything about that?”

“Sassy is dead?” His spine went erect, and he shook his head. “No, that can’t be right. That lunatic wants to murder the FBI Task Force team that imprisoned her. There’s no way she would kill herself.” He glared at Derek, and Derek stared back at him. “Wait a minute. You think I had something to do with Sassy hanging herself?”

“Did you?” Derek’s body went rigid.
