Book Review: The Thirteenth Month: (Seba Segal Series - Book 1) by Elizabeth Hunter

The Thirteenth Month: (Seba Segal Series - Book 1)
by Elizabeth Hunter
May 23, 2023
Pages: 435
"Time is the most fluid medium in the universe; humans are its most replaceable element."

There are rules for traveling:

A mage must never go forward.

Keep the secrets of the order in all times.

And never, ever travel during the thirteenth month.

Born into a powerful mage family, Narine Anahid Khoren is a time traveler whose life is constantly in flux. Since committing to the order of the Seba Segal at fourteen, she’s spent her life traveling through history, trying to make a difference and sacrificing her life in the present for one jumping through the past.

But while the world in 2071 has moved forward, the ancient order of the Seba Segel have become ever more archaic. The secret sect founded by astronomer priests has passed its magic to thousands of generations, perfecting the secrets of divination and time travel, while also amassing power, influence, and riches.

Change is on the horizon, and some in the order would do anything to stop it from coming. When one of the highest laws of mage travel is broken in the thirteenth month, Narine, her friends, and one unsuspecting professor will have to scour history to set the timeline right.

The Thirteenth Month is the first book in the Seba Segel series, an all-new time travel fantasy series by ten-time USA Today bestseller, Elizabeth Hunter, author of the Elemental Mysteries and the Irin Chronicles.

I’m not going to lie, I struggled with this book, but only the first quarter or so and then it was worth sticking with it. The book takes place in Ethiopia and there were many terms, names, etc., that I was unfamiliar with which is why I struggled. I’m one that likes to pronounce things correctly, , and know what things are used for but all in all, I was able to figure a lot of it out or I could look it up.
,
This story has some great elements. There’s time travel, which I absolutely love, intertwined with romance and history, which makes for an interesting read. Hunter always goes above and beyond in researching her stories to make them factual where needed and to weave a truly good story.

Excerpt: DOMINATURE: What If The Devil…Banished God...From Heaven... by Joe Belcastro + giveaway

by Joe Belcastro
2.22.22
Genre: Alternate History, Fantasy, Thriller, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Embark on an epic fantasy adventure with reimagined divine beings in this alternate telling of one of humanity's famed creation stories.

Adonai and Helel are equal and co-existing on their realm of Alegion. Together, they utilize a planetary dominion in the effort to grow an instinctual need to create and learn about their evolving powers. That is until an unforeseen clash of wills over how to govern humankind on Eden commences; and the one who remained on Alegion, is not the being we were led to believe...

Now banished to Eden, the only way to ending this conflict is for the fallen one to lure the other onto Eden where a death blow can be administered.

A methodical go-for-the-jugular war ravages the plane of humanity. Notable landscapes are explored, resurrected, and manipulated. New and familiar historical characters, along with pivotal scenes throughout civilization - remixed in this introspective, violent, self-aware, and potentially plausible, biblical-like saga.

Can any being overcome who they inherently are?

Excerpt:
Is this in the same vein as when Jesus tried to manipulate the world?”

Pope Vincent’s monotone voice rises saying, “Jesus was a vessel poisoned from within. Predestined to cause harm. Yet an antidote stood with him, trying to give the Savior a choice. And when presented with said choice, he rose to the temptation of power.”

Giancarlo’s pacing stops as he sits in the seat William Jenson occupied moments ago.

“Temptation has surrounded our world once again,” continues Pope Vincent. “Majority of it, created by our hands. Influencing and molding us in a mental state ripe for manipulation.”

Pope Vincent then goes over to his seat and looks Giancarlo directly in the eyes saying, “Heed these words. One being cannot change the world. A singular voice can be heard, but if only a few listens to it, what value does it really have? God understood this. And he spent centuries trying to reach those based on his worldly limitations. But there is one who refuses to believe this, as they have tried countless times since creation to prove their will is dominant.”

Giancarlo cautiously mentions, “The Devil.”

“Indeed. The one patiently watching from above. Testing humankind’s mettle through a universal arsenal created by he, and his fallen brother.”

About the Author:
JOE BELCASTRO is a prolific writer living in Tampa, Florida. His career escapades began in journalism covering the film industry and local nightlife scene. Joe's lust for the escapism of cinematic storytelling led to him becoming a syndicated film critic. And while he was content navigating the hustle of print/digital media, another passion came calling in the form of sports-entertainment.

Leaving journalism life, Joe found himself behind the camera as Head Writer & Producer for WWE television programming. Hunkering down in writers' rooms and traveling all over the world executing storylines in major arenas, the dream job had arrived. Until something else was then awakening inside of him...

Surprisingly, he made the difficult decision to leave a place he loved based on a premise he always desired to explore. That premise birthed the story in DOMINATURE. He toyed with writing a movie script, but the temptation of tackling a novel could not be denied.

In the end, Joe yearns to be locked in a studio writing/performing with his former rock bands. He also hopes to one day start a charitable foundation. But for the time being, he’s committing to this realm of novels and hopes to settle down as a proud author.

Excerpt: Purgatory's Shore (Artillerymen Book 1) by Taylor Anderson

Prepare to embark on a thrilling new military sci-fi adventure from New York Times bestselling author of the Destroyermen series, Taylor Anderson. Perfect for fans of David Weber, Jack Campbell, and S.M. Stirling, PURGATORY’S SHORE (Ace Hardcover; September 21, 2021) is the first installment of the Artillerymen series and takes place in the same world as Anderson’s acclaimed Destroyermen novels. The story follows a group of American soldiers who are on their way to fight in the Mexican-American War, only to be swept away to a strange and deadly alternate Earth.

by Taylor Anderson
Genre: Alternate history, war fiction
On their way to fight in the Mexican-American War, a group of American soldiers are swept away to a strange and deadly alternate Earth in this thrilling new adventure set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Destroyermen series.

The United States, 1847. A disparate group of young American soldiers are bound to join General Winfield Scott's campaign against Santa Anna at Veracruz during the Mexican-American War. They never arrive.

Or rather . . . they arrive somewhere else.

The untried, idealistic soldiers are mostly replacements, really; a handful of infantry, artillery, dragoons, and a few mounted riflemen with no unified command. And they've been shipwrecked on a terrible, different Earth full of monsters and unimaginable enemies.

Major Lewis Cayce, late of the 3rd US "Flying" Artillery, must unite these men to face their fears and myriad threats, armed with little more than flintlock muskets, a few pieces of artillery, and a worldview that spiritually and culturally rebels against virtually everything they encounter. It will take extraordinary leadership and a cadre of equally extraordinary men and women to mold frightened troops into an effective force, make friends with other peoples the evil Holy Dominion would eradicate, and reshape their "manifest destiny" into a cause they can all believe in and fight for.

For only together will they have any hope of survival.

“Captain Cayce! Captain Cayce! Oh, please wake up! We need you rather badly!”

Lewis’s mind rejected what he was hearing. It sounded like the young dragoon lieutenant. Coryon Burton, wasn’t it? Of North Carolina. Class of ’46. But that’s impossible. I’m dead. We’re all dead, swallowed by the void.

“He’s alive,” came another impossible voice—Giles Anson’s. “And none of his arms or legs seem broken. Probably bumped his head. Maybe he fell on it? Without a surgeon, who knows what’s wrong with him if he won’t wake up.”

“I can’t wake up,” Lewis managed to protest through painful lips. “None of us can.”

“Aye, he’s comin’ around,” came a gruff, slightly Scottish voice. “You, Private Willis, pour some water on his face. He probably can’t even open his eyes with all that dried blood gluin’ ’em shut.”

“But Sergeant McNabb!” objected a harsh, squeaky voice, apparently Private Willis, “we ain’t found any fresh water yet, an’ all I got’s in my canteen!”

“Do as ye’re told, damn ye! There’s plenty o’ water in the ship—if we can get to it before all the started butts leak it out.”

Lewis sensed movement beside him and a sudden coolness on his face. Gentle fingers massaged his eyes and he cracked one open. The sky was bright pink until he blinked several times to clear the blood. It looked perfectly ordinary then; bright blue with the sun creeping into view overhead. But that was the only thing right. The deck below him didn’t move because it wasn’t a deck and the sun was beginning to glare through tall, straight trees, many of which had their branches savagely ripped from the near side of their trunks. Colorful birds—Lewis assumed they were birds, though they were shaped very strangely—flitted through the trees, cawing raucously. Those of different species didn’t seem to get along very well, and there was constant skirmishing. That didn’t matter. Realistically, the only birds Lewis should’ve seen were gulls.

Giles Anson leaned into Lewis’s view, festooned with all the weapons he generally carried in the field. A pair of Colt Paterson revolvers were in belt holsters at his side, and a Model 1838 flintlock pistol was thrust into his belt. An 1817 flintlock rifle, a fine, .54 caliber weapon like Lieutenant Swain’s Mounted Rifles carried, was slung over one shoulder and a pair of tooled, privately made pommel holsters were draped over the other. Knowing the Ranger as he did, Lewis wasn’t surprised the man had immediately collected his weapons. Anson nodded with apparent relief and produced a genuine smile. “See there, Lewis? You can wake up.” A more customary ironic smile replaced the first one. “Might wish you hadn’t, though.”

Lewis groaned and picked clumps of dried blood from his eyelashes, still knitting the other eye closed, while a man behind helped raise him to a sitting position. He’d expected to find himself sitting on sand for some reason, but realized he was on a bed of dry, ferny-looking leaves with spines as rigid as pine needles. That didn’t make any sense. “I thought I was dead,” he confessed hoarsely, “but even in hell, I doubt I’d hurt this much.” His other eye clear, he gently probed his scalp under blood-matted hair. “And either I didn’t feel what hit me when we were wrecked—I assume we were wrecked?—or I did fall on my head.” He looked up at Anson and Burton. “But not in the water?”

“Give him a drink, ye fool,” came Sergeant McNabb’s voice. Lewis looked at him and beheld a virtual stereotype of his breed. Tough, craggy-faced, probably in his forties, McNabb wasn’t particularly imposing, but his rank in the regular foot artillery meant he’d been in long enough to develop sufficient skill, personality, and experience to deal with much larger men. Private Willis, also one of Lieutenant Olayne’s 1st Artillerymen, looked like he sounded: a short, wiry youngster, wearing a put-upon expression in addition to all his gear. Beyond them, and a cluster of other armed men (1816 muskets, bayonets, and short swords for the artillerymen, .54 caliber 1817s for the Rifles, and .52 caliber breechloading Hall carbines hanging from white leather straps and iron clips on the dragoons), stood a densely wooded forest of tall, straight-trunked trees. Lewis blinked. Private Willis handed over a gray, stamped-steel canteen.

Lewis took a small sip and nodded his thanks. “I have a glaringly obvious question, I suppose,” he managed with a firmer voice.

“Think you can stand?” Anson asked.

“I must.”

Anson and Lieutenant Burton grasped his arms and hauled him to his feet. His legs supported him, but a wave of painful vertigo left him swaying for a moment before the dizziness, at least, began to pass. Gently, the men still holding his arms guided him around to look behind. “My God,” Lewis Cayce muttered.

He’d assumed the men had carried him inshore from whatever coast they’d struck, but the wreck of Mary Riggs was in this strange forest as well, far from any sound of the sea. Dizziness threatened to take him again as Lewis contemplated the impossibility of that.

Anson knew what he was thinking. “Do you remember falling? All the rest of us do, an’ apparently the ship fell with us.” He gestured at the stripped branches on trees, extending fifteen or twenty feet up. Somehow, that felt about right. Anson pointed back at Mary Riggs. “That”—he hesitated—“peculiar storm must’ve carried us inland on a wave surge of some kind, leavin’ the ship—us—here as it receded.”

Meet Lynne Hill Clark, a High Concept Fantasy author (Of Lords and Commoners Trilogy) + giveaway

About Lynne Hill Clark, a High Concept Fantasy author.

She’s the author of The Lords and Commoners series and A Woman’s World series.

I hate books, especially fantasy books, and I hate writing.

Just checking to see if you’re paying attention. :-)

All I want to do is write and read. Actually, I listen to audiobooks. I listen to at least one a month and review it. Mostly fantasy books. I listen while I exercise and do the dishes. This has two benefits. 1) I don’t feel guilty for taking time to sit down and read a book but I still get to hear a great story. It is the most time saving way to keep up with the latest books in my genre. 2) It makes my workout and mindless chores go by quicker. Win - win!

My best days are the ones I get to spend writing. Then the best of the best days are when a creative twist for my stories hits me, sometimes it feels like an actual slap to the face. My heart races and I know at once that it is the perfect fit for my story. Super fun and this is what makes writing worthwhile.

I was born in Colorado and raised in a small town of eight hundred people. I received a masters of science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Living in the southeast was an eye-opening experience.

I graduated with my Doctorate of Psychology from the University of the Rockies. I specialized in criminology and justice studies. Never a dull moment and VERY interesting to learn about the criminal psyche.

I’m often asked if my degrees influenced my writing and they certainly did. In my master's program I studied under Dr. Hood. He was a leader in the psychology of religion. Studying early Christian history greatly influenced my 3rd novel, Of Gods and Goddesses.

Restorative Justice (RJ) influenced my writing as well. For example, it is how Vallachia chooses to lead her people and deal with her “enemies”. Some might say that there is no such thing as an enemy, they only exist in fiction stories or in our own minds. I hope to incorporate even more RJ into future books.

My extensive travels and at times living overseas has greatly added to my writing material. Being an American Peace Corps Volunteer in Jordan helped me to create the world that I’m currently writing about, A Woman’s World. My time studying in China and visiting family in Norway (just to name a few of my travels) have all helped expand my world view, which of course helps my creativity. I am very blessed, my life experiences have given me rich material to write about.

Something else that you may find interesting is that I’m dyslexic. I was diagnosed in 2nd grade, as I could not read. My parents were told that I was “slow” and “not intelligent”. They said that I would not be able to graduate from high school. Sometimes it pays NOT to listen to the “experts”. My education also helped give me the confidence and practice that I needed to be able to write for a living.

Don’t believe limits that others set for you (or ones you set for yourself)!
The sky is not even a limit anymore!!

Book Review: A Timely Revolution: (Book One) by Tempie W. Wade

A Timely Revolution: (The Timely Revolution Series Book One)
by Tempie W. Wade
December 9, 2018
ASIN: B07L8LGX5B

ISBN: 9780960025701
Waking up in the year 1765, next to a mysterious black horse, Maggie Bishop has no idea what cosmic force shook her up and spit her back out 253 years in the past, and she certainly has no clue on how to get back to her life in 2018. What she does know is that she needs to find a way to survive in the not-so-modern and very dangerous world that she has been unexpectedly thrust into.

With the American Revolutionary War on the horizon, Maggie uses her knowledge of the future to create a new life with the sole intent of steering clear of trouble while keeping her loved ones safe from the devastation of war. However, when a simple twist of fate intervenes, Maggie finds herself not only owed a debt by General George Washington, but also caught up in the early stages of the Culper Spy Ring. Torn between protecting the man that she loves, but knows she can never have, and saving the life of her best friend, both on opposite sides of the conflict, Maggie must find a way to walk a fine line between the two opposing armies, or risk changing everything that history says is meant to be.

Take a stroll down the streets of the past while being introduced to a few of its real-life citizens during the time of the American Revolution in a tale where fantasy and history are intertwined into a story that you will not soon forget.

Maggie Bishop sits out on the beach in North Carolina thinking about her new engagement to Brad, and if she really wants to get married. She goes to the water’s edge and finds an ornate bottle, that has a strange Scottish poem inside. Clutching the bottle, she heads back to the room she is sharing with Brad. Dizziness and pain overcome her until she blacks out. Maggie wakes up next to a mysterious black horse. She was on the beach with no familiar buildings around, just beach and sea. She soon learns it is no longer in 2018, it is 1765.

If you enjoyed Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, then readers will enjoy this novel (first in a series), A Timely Revolution, which like Outlander, has a heroine from the future who magically ends up in the past, during the time a historical war happens. Real historical figures mesh with fictional, plus romance. Ms. Wade handles historical facts and figures well, adding her spin in this book. I cannot wait for the second novel in the series and what happens to Maggie next.

I give A Timely Revolution 5 Revolutionary sheep.

The book you now hold in your hands is nothing new, only forgotten by most.

It is, however, how Chef Daniel, the Victorian Chef, recovered many missing segments of his knowledge after having a stroke in 2012. At that time, he had a forty-seat restaurant where he was recreating dishes from the Victorian Era. He was also developing his signature catsups to serve with each receipt that he placed on the menu.

After the stroke, he was forced to give up on his dream for the time being and start the long journey of rehabilitation of both body and mind. When Chef Daniel was able to stand in front of a stove again, he went back to what he knew best, making small batch catsup that he took to local fairs and sold so that he could make more.

This book is a big part of what kept Chef Daniel going each day. Now he wants to share that with others by contributing ninety percent of his proceeds to the Blood Banks that kept him alive by furnishing over twenty units to him when he was in need.

Spending many hours in Central police headquarters and in his grandfathers hematology lab gave Daniel an unusual childhood and a love for science. Along with this, his great uncle owned the oldest book store in Nashville. His parents took him there regularly, where developed a love of reading and found out about history.

Daniel went on to become an Electrical Engineer and Industrial Maintenance Manager till NAFTA took away his job. A year later he went to culinary school and studied Victorian cooking, after which he opened a Victorian-style restaurant.

He became a heart attack and stroke survivor at fifty years old, where he used writing to rehabilitate his brain. The first book written by Daniel was on Victorian Catsup, which had over two hundred catsup recipes in it from the late 1700’s to 1910, with over sixty different flavors. Daniel used the book to start his 1876 Catsup company as Mr Catsup.

When Irene returns to London after a relatively straightforward book theft in Germany, Bradamant informs her that there is a top secret dragon-Fae peace conference in progress that the Library is mediating, and that the second-in-command dragon has been stabbed to death. Tasked with solving the case, Vale and Irene immediately go to 1890s Paris to start their investigation.

Once they arrive, they find evidence suggesting that the murder victim might have uncovered proof of treachery by one or more Librarians. But to ensure the peace of the conference, some Librarians are being held as hostages in the dragon and Fae courts. To save the captives, including her parents, Irene must get to the bottom of this murder--but was it a dragon, a Fae, or even a Librarian who committed the crime?

Irene returns to London and Bradamant tells her about the peace conference
between the dragons and the Fae set in Paris of another alternate world. The Library will mediate it,

But when a second-in-command dragon to the King dragon is murdered, Irene along with Vale and Kai, must figure out who killed the man and get the peace treaty signed. But the Blood Countess, a Fae known that inspired Dracula, isn’t helping.

Once again, Genevieve Cogman has drawn me into her fantasy alternate worlds peopled by mortals, Fae, and dragons. There are librarians and books, and a real-life woman infamously known as a vampire because she bathed in virgins’ blood, a Parisian underground, and much more. She has proven again that librarians make the best heroes!
