Sheep Book Review: Burning Dawn by Gena Showalter

Burning Dawn
Angels of the Dark #3
By: Gena Showalter
Paranormal Romance

Plot:
A tormented past has left Thane with an insatiable need for violence, making him the most dangerous assassin in the skies. He lives by a single code: no mercy. And as he unleashes his fury on his most recent captor, he learns no battle could have prepared him for the slave he rescues from his enemy's clutches—a beauty who stokes the fires of his darkest desires.

Elin Vale has her own deep-rooted scars, and her attraction to the exquisite warrior who freed her challenges her every boundary. But Thane's unwavering determination to protect her means she must face her greatest fears—and enter a world in which passion is power, and victory means breathtaking surrender.

A few books ago, Gena went somewhere. I don't know where and frankly I don't care. But her writing was affected and I thought she might be lost to us. *hangs head and cries* However, I'm never one give up so easily on an author I love and thank the Dark Angels! Gena is BACK and she's standing in her saddle people! AKA she's bringing the heat!

Angels in the Dark starts out a little rocky. The first chapter literally throws about 20 different names at you. All new characters and all bam, you're like....uh ok what just happend. But read chapter two and then three, cause soon you move on from the awkward start and get into the smexy fun!

I don't know if people are aware, or care, but men can and do get raped. It's a touchy subject for anyone and very personal, but Thane has been taken advantage of and he's hurt. With that hurt comes rage and at what point do you let the rage win? When is revenge worth loosing not only yourself but your life and loved ones to? Can forgiveness be given a chance? Gena taps into all these topics and so much more.

Here's what I love; flaming-sword blood and guts action with kickass chicks and alpha men who would rip out the throats of enemies that threaten their lady loves. *le sigh* Gena brings that and adds some dodge boulder to the mix.

Here's what I hate; women who are wishy-washy and can't figure out what they want. Elin has some of that vibe going on. It grated on my nerves at times. One second she wants to love monkey on Thane and they next she cuts flappy chicken and runs. Not like Thane is an Angel (cause he's a step up on the Angel totem pole) but at least he puts his feelings out there. Good or bad, love it or piss off!

The back and forth emo ride between these two got tedious at times. Yeah, yeah Elin has lost loved ones etc. She's young and all that. But at some point, she needs to grow up! That journey took a tad too long for me. Also, why do characters all of a sudden have weird last names? Like Thane of the Three and John Walks with Big stick and carries rabbit? Ok, the last one was made up. But big changes in last names have been thrown in. I think Gena is getting into Game of Thrones....not that it's bad just, different.

But overall, what the heck am I complaining about?! Gena is one of the best PNR writers out there. Hands down. And she's back and better then ever. I can sit here and nit pick all I want, but that sucks. The good outweighs any of the bad in this edition and I would recommend this series and all of her books to any PNR lover!

Sheep Book Review: Wicked Nights by Gena Showalter

Wicked Nights, by Gena Showalter, is the first in her new PNR series Angels of the Dark. There is a reason of love Showalter's writing so much, she creates drop-dead fantastic warrior men for ladies to swoon over and gives us the action and romance to pack that final KO punch! Wapow!

Plot:
Leader of the most powerful army in the heavens, Zacharel has been deemed nearly too dangerous, too ruthless—and if he isn't careful, he'll lose his wings. But this warrior with a heart of ice will not be deterred from his missions at any cost…until a vulnerable human tempts him with a carnal pleasure he's never known before.
Accused of a crime she did not commit, Annabelle Miller has spent four years in an institution for the criminally insane. Demons track her every move, and their king will stop at nothing to have her. Zacharel is her only hope for survival, but is the brutal angel with a touch as hot as hell her salvation—or her ultimate damnation?

Zacharel's one bad boy angel! Though he tries to do the right thing sometimes HIS version of right and wrong and ours is a little off but no matter the cause this strong complex man is all heart when it comes to his angel brothers and sisters in arms. The alpha attitude, mixed with the power of the heavens, takes Zach to a whole new level of beef cake that was just waiting to be tapped. First introduced in Gena's other series, Lords of the Underworld, Zach maintains the whole package and adds to the sex appeal that left me throughly entertained and sleeping sweetly at night.

Annabelle steps into the scene as a young girl who's charged with her parents' murder at the tender age of eighteen. Locked away for over four years and forced to endure some hellish nightmares at the asylum, Anna takes it all in stride and keeps on truckin' like the kickass leading lady this story needed. With some wit, humor, and warrior skills Anna only endears herself more to me as the story continues. She's the perfect match for Zach who's got a lot to learn about playing nice with others if he's ever going to lead his band of misfit angels.

Packed to the gills with action and adventure, Wicked Nights brings everything it can without being over the top or in your face. As I stated before the book is extremely well written and wonderfully vivid in true Showalter fashion. The romance between our leading couple was spot on-and delivered in equal parts; nothing felt rushed here and that's what I look for in a story, an organic flow that takes the reader along with the characters on the same journey. I was running through these pages as fast I could because I just KNEW the ending would bring it all around to the final climatic explosion and it surely delivers.

With the start of this new saga and many side characters being introduced I am thrilled and eager to get my hands on the next chapter in this saga. Heave and Hell are going at each other and with all the demons out there it's going to be a tough battle! If all the next editions in this series can bring the heat this one did then I'm in this to finish!
