Book Review: The Evolution of Fae and Gods (Chronicles of the Stone Veil, book #3) by Sawyer Bennett

The Evolution of Fae and Gods (Chronicles of the Stone Veil, book #3)
by Sawyer Bennett
March 23, 2021
269 pages
Evil is coming.

A dark malevolence the likes of which this world has never seen, and it comes straight from the depths of Hell. Darkness meant to destroy. A prophecy I am fated to fulfill but will most likely not survive.

Through it all, Carrick Byrne has stood strong by my side. Something has deeply changed between me and the man I once despised, and all it took was a kiss of provocation for both of us to feel it. I know deep in my soul we’re being guided by destiny, but I don’t know if I can trust it. Carrick is holding something back, and I fear the consequences could be deadly once his truth is revealed.

We’re not ready, but calamity waits for no woman. I have discovered a power within myself I must learn to master. A new connection in the Underworld has been revealed to me, one that I hope is friend but is just as likely foe. We are in a race against time as we try to figure out how to stop the end of the world from occurring. The battle is coming, and I can only hope we’re prepared for what happens next.

The Evolution of Fae and Gods is book three of the Chronicles of the Stone Veil series and is best enjoyed if read in series order.

Finley has accepted that her fate is tied to the darkness trying to take over the world, and with Carrick helping her, she has hope that her fate isn’t set in stone. The relationship between Finley and Carrick has begun changing. And even though she used to despise him, she is falling deeper and deeper for him. If destiny is real and can be trusted, Finley knows that it is guiding her on this journey.

Finley and Carrick's passion has been ramping up slowly and is ready to have sparks fly. The connection between the two is so deep that it seems like their souls are connected somehow. The side relationship of Myles and Rainey has also been a pleasant surprise in this well-written series.

Exclusive Excerpt:
The king’s hands threaded under her arms and, with little effort, pulled her to her feet. And then he pressed his mouth to Shayla’s. Her mind erupted into a cacophony of joyous confusion. She’d been specifically told there would be no kissing. The king did not kiss. But, holy hell! Did the king ever kiss. His large frame bent down over her, surrounding her in his heat. His full lips sucked and pulled at hers and his tongue demanded entrance and exploration, which she freely granted. His hard muscles bunched and thrummed around her, setting her body on fire everywhere they touched. The scent of powerful masculinity filled her nose, and the exquisite flavor of his tongue in her mouth intoxicated her. And, oh God, every time she felt the passing hardness of his fangs as they kissed made her whimper and moan. Her body readied itself immediately for his, moistening, opening. Having shielded herself from physical relationships, she was astounded to learn her body had the ability to produce this crazy, urgent euphoria. Her brain scrambled to process each new, maddening sensation. In that moment, she would’ve done anything to maintain the feeling. Was it always like this? Kael growled low in his chest as his mouth came at her again and again, and Shayla felt the vibration of the feral sound against her breasts. She squeezed her thighs together, seeking friction to satisfy even a little of her now uncontrollable lust. Her mouth was so filled with his probing tongue it was difficult to get enough oxygen, but his kisses convinced her she could live without it as long as he continued to devour her so intensely. Never had she imagined the expression of physical love could make her feel so wanted, so needed. His obvious pleasure throbbed against her stomach and flooded her with unbelievable feelings of power, and just a little fear. Because they were off the grid now, outside the bounds of the rules and expectations she’d been taught during her training. And she was thrilled it might mean he was as affected by her as she was by him. Wherever the king was leading them, she was only too happy to follow. In truth, she felt powerless to do otherwise. A sharp, piercing sensation nicked the edge of her tongue. Kael groaned and she gasped into his mouth. He bit me! They said he wouldn’t— All thinking abruptly halted as he sucked on her tongue and fed. She could feel the pulling flow of her blood. It was an electric rush that set her body on fire. As if she didn’t already burn for him. As if she wasn’t already wet for him. From just their first kiss…

Sheep Book Review: A Vampire's Honor (Vampire's Promise Book 3) by Carla Susan Smith

by Carla Susan Smith
September 27, 2016Publisher: Lyrical Press
Genre: Fantasy
Format: Ebook/Paperback

Pages: 250
Sins Of The Past ...

Rowan Harper thought being with a vampire would keep her out of harm's way. But true evil lurks in the darkness, and not even her lover, Gabriel, knows all of its tricks.

Rowan may be his Promise, the one woman who can save Gabriel's soul, but the two of them have a long and complicated history that Rowan is only now discovering--complete with old enemies who will stop at nothing to make them suffer.

When Rowan is abducted and forced to witness unspeakable violence, secrets of the past begin to unfold. Secrets that show Gabriel's best friend Aleksei in a new light.

Will the truth destroy all three of them or bind them more tightly together, and if evil prevails, will it be Rowans's soul that ultimately needs saving?

I had no clue what this series was about, and that can be tough when you get to a book three in any saga. But the author does an excellent job keeping me up-to-date with the present, while not dwelling too much from past stories. From what I could tell anyway.

A good mix of action and dialog keeps the pace and forward movement of the characters. There's a past between the main two but I never felt left out on what that was. Our leading pair seem to be really solid, though it took them some time to get there. With more trials and tribulations to come! As you would expect with any great PNR.

Some awesome bad guys playing around in the tale also help keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Friends and side characters are making a scene and hopefully can get some spin off stories. The tone and texture of this book is very well planned and executed. Overall, I am really and truly impressed.

I didn't know this author before, but I'm sure glad I do now!

About the Author:

Born and raised in England, I now call South Carolina home where I live with my wonderfully supportive husband, awesome son, and the most discerning canine critique group ever - if tails aren’t wagging then the story isn’t working!

I owe my love of literature to my mother, who, after catching me reading by flashlight beneath the bed covers, calmly replaced the romance book I’d ‘borrowed’ with one that was far less risqué, and much more appropriate for a pre-teen! She encouraged me to include a wide variety of genres in my reading tastes, but romance, and paranormal romance in particular, has remained my first love.

I never really thought about writing a romance novel until I read one that was so bad I can only assume it got published by mistake! Making such a comment to my BFF, Sharon, she challenged me to do better. The result was a 250-thousand word epic that I affectionately refer to as my ‘bodice-ripper’ romance - and yes, I still have it!

When I’m not writing I can be found in my kitchen. I love baking, and my husband will actually admit his love of Christmas fruitcake. (Personally I think all that brandy in the fruit has something to do with it!) If not baking then I’m working on my latest tapestry project or playing catch-up with my reading list where I always seem to be at least three books behind!

It’s a crazy-good life, and I wouldn’t change it for anything, although I wouldn‘t object if I came up with the winning lottery numbers!

Sheep Book Review: The Beast (Black Dagger Brotherhood #14) by J.R. Ward *spoiler-free*

The Beast (Black Dagger Brotherhood #14)
by J.R. Ward
Hardcover, 508 pages
April 5th 2016
Rhage and Mary return in a new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood

Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself…

For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect—or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand—or control—the panic and insecurity that plague him…

And that terrifies him—as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities—and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world...and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from.

After reading all that plot info you might be thinking "sounds good!" or something along the lines of "oh hells to the yes!!!".. ..well sadly I was a bit let down with the latest BDB installment. I can't help it, I've got high expectations for this author and I am just not willing to give those up. She's amazing. She can write the mess out of anything and THIS time she kinda failed for me.

Pretty much the majority of The Beast is about Rhage and Mary deciding if they want to be parents. We follow their single minded story of becoming "possible" parents and how they feel about it all. Then there's more time talking about feelings. It's a lot of emotional ice cream dates and crying about what they may or may not be missing when it comes to kidos. I dunno, it was just a bit bland for my tastes.

Sure there are those tasty side plots, that J.R. Ward is famous for, about other characters in her world. Layla and her pregnancy move along in that progression. Lessers and humans getting more wise to the paranormal world. Everyone in the mansion seems to love and support each other all the dang time, almost to the extreme side of  smothering. V and Doc Jane are what they are, loving their jobs and just kinda humping each other when it suits. It's just all too easy plot wise and the puzzle pieces just fit too easily it seems.

Overall, I like this author. Shooooot I kinda really frelin LOVE  this author and her series, but this installment was a let down for me. This one bad apple won't stop me from keeping the BDB love boat going, I'm just wishing there was a stop in Ensenada for Pina Coladas and nights we wont remember or regret

Book Review: CARNAL, The Beast Who Loved Me by Victoria Danann

CARNAL: The Beast Who Loved Me (EXILED Book 1)
By: Victoria Danann
February 14, 2016
251 pages
Publisher: dba 7th House, Imprint of Andromeda LLC

The angel, Kellareal, stopped the genocide of a hundred and forty three human/animal hybrids, who'd been bred as a research experiment and spent their entire lives imprisoned. Against orders, he spirited them away to a dimension and gave them the job of protecting humans whose own hybrid experiment had escaped and become their nightmare.

Rosie Storm thought she was getting a few weeks of tantrum-fueled asylum. The last thing she was expecting was someone like Carnal.

BUY ON AMAZON

Talk about a good read! Carnal has just about everything you could ask for in a PNR. Sexy alpha men, (I mean duh. Look at the cover! rarr!), laugh out loud moments, evolving stories, action and creative writing. There's so much to enjoy in this beastly series.

From the first page to the last I was hooked. Every turn of events is evenly planned out and paced to keep you moving right along. A very creative cast of solid characters and good emotional depth are what kept me plugged in. It's not often I get a little teary eyed, since I'm pretty much a vampire and all, but this one got me really freakin close!

Sexy dirty passion for all of us who read romance for just that thing! I have no love life at this point, but when I read these books....it's all forgotten! Really recommending this one to those that love a well rounded and special PNR that's sure to keep you entertained.

Can't wait to see what Mrs. Danann cranks out next

Book Review: Alpha: An Urban Fantasy Novel (War of the Alphas Book 3) by SM Reine

by SM Reine
250 pages
June 4, 2015
No longer an Omega, Deirdre Tombs has found her animal. She only had to die and rise from her own ashes to discover it.

And she’s returned with a purpose.

For the first time in history, the role of Alpha is up for election. If Everton Stark takes charge, he could disband the ruthless government organization that has made life miserable for shifters like Deirdre.

One problem: Stark doesn’t want to run. He only wants vengeance against his wife, Rhiannon, who killed many of his followers and stole the Ethereal Blade.

While Stark is focused on revenge, Rhiannon is focused on winning the election for Alpha. Victory means tearing the Winter Court apart with civil war. It means riots. It means unleashing a deadly unseelie assassin that devours souls. Anything to get her dragon shifter mate in power…with Rhiannon at his side.

Alpha is book 3 in the War of the Alphas series by SM Reine. This series is a continuation of Reine’s long running series which focuses on what happens after Genesis.

Deirdre is no longer a mystery shifter, or an Omega. She finds her animal when she dies and rises from her own ashes. She is just as surprised by the turn of events as Everton Stark is! Riley Gresham has decided that the role of Alpha should be voted on by all gaean species. Deirdre wants to help the gaean’s so bad and thinks Stark is the one to solve all the problems of the world. Only issue, Stark has no interest in doing so. All he wants is revenge! Revenge against Rhiannon, his wife and Melichor her dragon shifter mate!

Even though I would love to hate Stark, I find myself siding with him and Deirdre at every turn. Stark is brutal but there is still a spark of humanity in him. Deirdre is the only one that brings it out in him. The spark of passion and tension between these two characters is very dynamic.

Book Review: Beta (War of the Alphas #2) by S.M. Reine

Beta (War of the Alphas #2)
by S.M. Reine
Pages: 365
April 22, 2015
Deirdre Tombs has lived most her life as the weakest of shapeshifters—an Omega who can’t turn into any animal. Now the terrorist known as Everton Stark has made her his Beta. He wants her by his side when he defeats the Office of Preternatural Affairs, kills Rylie Gresham, and becomes Alpha of all shifters.

The faeries from the Winter Court have an offer to make Stark’s domination easier. They know where to find a cursed sword that can kill anything, and they’ll give it to him…for a price.

Deirdre’s the only one who can keep Stark from getting this powerful weapon—if she wants to. But as brutal as Stark may be, he’s also the only one who can give Deirdre what she wants.

Vengeance.

And Deirdre doesn’t know where her loyalties lie anymore.

Omega is book 2 in the War of the Alphas series by SM Reine. This series is a continuation of Reine’s long running series which focuses on what happens after Genesis. You can read this series as a standalone series but you get more depth and understanding of the characters and the story setting if you read all of her books.

Deirdre is a mystery shifter, an Omega. She is a shifter; just no one knows what kind. She’s considered weak, a throwaway. Everton Stark has other ideas for her and makes her his Beta. A Beta is the right hand of the Alpha. Deirdre is by far one of my favorite characters in Reine’s books. She is loyal, and tries to fight for the underdog even when her moral compass is out of whack. Reine has an excellent way of bringing her stories to life. Not only can I vividly picture the towns and characters, I feel so connected with each and everyone of them.
