Spoiler-freer Book Review: Kings Rising #3 (Captive Prince Trilogy) by C.S. Pacat

Kings Rising (Captive Prince #3)
by C.S. Pacat
February 2nd 2016
Kindle Edition, 368 pages
The epic conclusion to the internationally acclaimed Captive Prince trilogy.

Damianos of Akielos has returned.

His identity now revealed, Damen must face his master Prince Laurent as Damianos of Akielos, the man Laurent has sworn to kill.

On the brink of a momentous battle, the future of both their countries hangs in the balance. In the south, Kastor’s forces are massing. In the north, the Regent’s armies are mobilising for war. Damen’s only hope of reclaiming his throne is to fight together with Laurent against their usurpers.

Forced into an uneasy alliance the two princes journey deep into Akielos, where they face their most dangerous opposition yet. But even if the fragile trust they have built survives the revelation of Damen’s identity – can it stand against the Regent’s final, deadly play for the throne?

I read this book months ago, but Kings Rising is the climatic (pun intended) end to the Captive Prince trilogy and any pre release talk was punishable by...I don't know, but I wasn't going to chance it. I will keep this spoiler free because everyone has been waiting to find out how this story plays out. Kings Rising is definitely worth the wait and if you've read the first two books, RUN and get this one cause...*slaps hands over mouth*

The story is told from Damen (Prince Damianos of Akielos) POV. He was raised by a loving father, the king. The people of his kingdom are sexually modest and treat their slaves with reverence. It was his naive and trusting nature that made him susceptible to the treachery of his brother. Even though he was put through humiliating and awful circumstances, as a slave to the Prince of Vere, he never forgot who he was or compromised his principals. Just an all around great guy. His polar opposite is Laurent, the Prince of Vere. He is now one of my all time favorite fictional characters. Laurent was raised in an environment of corruption and betrayal. The one person he could trust and love, his brother, was killed in battle. Left at such a young age to fend for himself, he had to rely on intelligence and cunning to survive.

Watching Laurent battled his desire to trust and let Damen in was heart-wrenching. The feels! This trilogy will forever be on my favorite shelf. I can count the number of books I've reread on one hand...but I will be revisiting this one again.

Book Review: Prince's Gambit (Captive Prince #2) by C.S. Pacat

Prince's Gambit (Captive Prince #2)
by C.S. Pacat
Paperback, 416 pages
Expected publication: July 7th 2015
by Berkley
The second novel in the critically acclaimed trilogy from global phenomenon C. S. Pacat—with an all-new chapter exclusive to the print edition.

With their countries on the brink of war, Damen and his new master, Prince Laurent, must exchange the intrigues of the palace for the sweeping might of the battlefield as they travel to the border to avert a lethal plot.

Forced to hide his identity, Damen finds himself increasingly drawn to the dangerous, charismatic Laurent. But as the fledgling trust between the two men deepens, the truth of secrets from both their pasts is poised to deal them the crowning death blow…

Includes a bonus chapter (print edition only)!

I’ve got book hangover! Not just because I stayed up late into the night to finish this book, but because I can’t stop thinking about Damen and Laurent. There is one more book left and I want their happy ever after so bad I can taste it, but I see the train wreck they are heading for and my heart already breaks for what it coming. This is a romance so I’m counting on the fact that there will be a HEA (Do you hear me CS Pacat?) but this story has all the makings of a great tragedy. The betrayal Laurent will feel once he finds out the truth of Damen’s identity…right in the feels! Very few characters are developed as carefully and perfectly as Laurent. In book one he is closed up so tight it is painful to read. Over the two books his character has opened up emotionally one layer at a time for Damen. We are getting glimpses as to why Laurent is the way he is and again, the feels. In book one I wasn’t too invested in Damen’s character, but in book two his struggle as the line between where his loyalties lie become blurred makes him very real.

The story is well written as the characters are moved around like chess pieces. I love watching the plot unfold and have been surprised a few times with unexpected twists. The sex scene at the end isn’t graphic and is more about emotional connection and trust. Feels people…all the feels…

Book Review: Captive Prince: Book One of the Captive Prince Trilogy by C. S. Pacat

Captive Prince: Book One of the Captive Prince Trilogyby
C. S. Pacat
Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Berkley Trade

April 7, 2015
From global phenomenon C. S. Pacat comes the first in her critically acclaimed trilogy—with a bonus story.

Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos. But when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.

Beautiful, manipulative, and deadly, his new master, Prince Laurent, epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.

For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else…

Includes an exclusive extra story!

This is book one of a trilogy. Book two, Prince’s Gambit, releases July 7, 2015 and book three, Kings Rising, doesn’t have an official release date yet. The trilogy was originally a self-published serial by Pacat and is now being released as a Berkley trade paperback. I love the simplicity of the covers, but they don't tell you anything about story.

I was pleasantly surprised that Berkley is publishing what is essentially a gay romance. If you are shy of gay romance then this might be a good book to dip your toes in. While sex is talked about and happening off screen, there is no romance in this book. This story is about how two princes are betrayed, and the political maneuvering by their families to basically get rid of them. They must become allies by circumstance in order to survive.

The book is told from Prince Damianos (Damen) of Akeilos’ POV. He isn’t a very complex character. Kind of generic hero with his survivor and selfless attitudes. But from him we see how both kingdoms are run and the cultural differences between them. To me, his most important role is introducing us to Prince Laurent of Vere. This character makes the story for me. I love the way the author slowly peels back layers of Laurent’s personality. She doesn’t rush the process, like in some romances, by having Damen break through Laurent’s cruel and cold exterior with only his heart of gold. Laurent stays true to character and it isn’t until the end we start to see a crack and the possibilities of what might be underneath. Finding out why Laurent behaves the way he does and his journey is what draws me into this book.

Captive Prince is labeled a romance, but there isn’t any in this book. Got a feeling readers will have to wait till the last book for any of that. The writing is good and easy to read. There is a heartbreaking short story about one of the slaves from Damen’s kingdom, we meet him in the Captive Prince, and how he ended up where he is now.
