New Release: Hidden Dragon (The Treasure of Paragon Book 7) by Genevieve Jack + excerpt

by Genevieve Jack
April 27, 2021
266 pages
No one ever promised forever would be easy.

Dianthe's second sight has always been both a blessing and a curse. She can't control her visions, yet they're unerringly accurate... until an erroneous prophecy results in the destruction of her homeland. The revelation crushes her spirit and endangers her role as an officer in the rebellion to take back the kingdom of Paragon.

Sylas, dragon shifter and exiled prince, is the leader of the rebellion, but he can no longer rely on his mate Dianthe's psychic powers. His inner dragon is secretly pleased to relegate her to the sidelines. Even if his decision temporarily drives her away, he'd rather have her angry than dead or worse.

When changing circumstances accelerate the rebellion's plans, Dianthe’s fairy roots make her the only one who can perform a dangerous and necessary task. Her need to prove herself soon collides with Sylas's desire to protect her and strains their connection to the breaking point. Dragon mating bonds are eternal, but if Dianthe and Sylas don't find a way back to each other, not only will their marriage fail, their mission to reclaim Paragon will as well.

EXCERPT
He joined her at the kitchen table and dipped his finger into the batter inside the powder-blue bowl she worked over. He stole a taste. “Mmmm. You’re making crizzle rolls. My favorite.”

“Sylas!” Dianthe smacked his shoulder. “That’s for the party tonight. You don’t want to show up at Elder Tree empty-handed, do you?”

“They won’t miss a mouthful.” He smacked his lips. “There’s something different.”

“I added a little lemon and fever fruit. Trader’s spice.”

He scooped up another dollop and popped it in his mouth. “Yes, the trader’s spice makes it,” he mumbled around his finger.

“Goddess have you, Sylas, I’m serious! Get your hands out of my bowl.” She turned the full weight of her heavily annoyed stare on him.

He took it as a challenge. “Hmm. If I can’t have the batter, what can I do to keep my mouth busy?” Reaching for her, he traced along the skin of her shoulder with the back of his nails.

She lowered her chin and stared up at him through impossibly thick lashes. “If I hadn’t known what I was getting into mating a dragon, I’d tell you to go suck an egg.” Wings fluttering, she allowed the spoon to clink against the side of the bowl. She wrapped her arms around his neck. “Lucky for you, I knew exactly what I was getting into mating a dragon, and I have far better uses for that naughty mouth.”

A deep, vibrating purr rumbled in his chest when her mouth met his, her full lips tasting of crizzle batter and the remains of her smile. He hoisted her up his body, felt her legs wrap around his hips. The world melted away. All his responsibilities, the horrors he’d seen over his years leading the rebellion, all of it retreated to the back of his mind and pure joy filled his heart. Goddess, he wanted her. Wanted to bury himself in her for days. Wanted to taste every inch of her.

He pushed the bowl aside and lowered his mate to the table, reaching for the buttons of her dress.

“Sylas, stop. Wait.” Dianthe’s lashes fluttered.

Sylas froze. Her eyes rolled back in the way they did when she was seized by a vision; her stomach tensed rigidly. A tremble rattled her body. He supported her with his arms as the magic rolled through her.

“What is it? What do you see?”

Her eyes widened in terror, her entire body quaking under him.

He held her tighter. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you. Tell me what you’ve seen.”

“Everfield… on fire. The Obsidian Guard is coming.”

Book Review: Windy City Dragon (Treasure of Paragon #2) by Genevieve Jack

Windy City Dragon (Treasure of Paragon #2)
by Genevieve Jack
April 23, 2019
312 pages
Windy City Dragon is the stellar second installment in Genevieve Jack’s captivating new series, Treasure of Paragon. Book two takes us to Chicago and the unravelling of Tobias’s story. We were first introduced to Tobias in The Dragon of New Orleans as a second brother of the Paragonian royal family. The dragon-shifter siblings are scattered across the globe, divorced from their home realm seemingly for their own safety. Tobias has been living his immortal existence as a pediatric surgeon. He’s learned to blend with humans in a safe, orderly, solitary existence. Tobias’s predictable life is upended with a kiss. Nurse Sabrina’s secret identity as a vampire heiress is immediately detected by the dragon doctor. While he’s able to withstand her glamour, Tobias cannot resist her charm. To further complicate matters, Tobias’s brother Gabriel and his witch mate Raven darken his door with ominous news of a sinister plot based in Paragon.

I adored this book as much as the first installment. The plot is rich, the characters magnetic. The looming complications of both vampire politics and the dragons’ duplicitous mother make this story riveting. Both books give the reader some satisfaction and closure, however, the larger plot of the dragon siblings and their estrangement will keep the series fresh for future installments. Books three, Manhattan Dragon, is expected this year.

Full disclosure, I am a huge Genevieve Jack fan. Other must-read series by Jack include Knight Games and Fireborn Wolves. Treasure of Paragon has the momentum to be another fan fave.

Book Review: The Dragon of New Orleans (The Treasure of Paragon #1) By Genevieve Jack

The Dragon of New Orleans (The Treasure of Paragon #1)

New Orleans: city of intrigue, supernatural secrets, and one enigmatic dragon.

A deadly curse....
For 300 years, Gabriel Blakemore has survived in New Orleans after a coup in his native realm of Paragon scattered him and his dragon siblings across the globe. Now a voodoo curse threatens to end his immortal existence. His only hope is to find an antidote, one that may rest in a mortal woman.

A lifesaving gift...
After five years of unsuccessful treatment for her brain cancer, death is a welcome end for Raven Tanglewood. Her illness has become a prison her adventurous spirit cannot abide. Salvation comes in the form of Gabriel, who uses dragon magic to save her.

A harrowing price...
To Raven, the bond that results from Gabriel's gift is another kind of captivity. Can Gabriel win Raven's love and trust in time to awaken the life-saving magic within her? Or will his fiery personality and possessive ways drive her from his side and seal his fate?

Dragon shifter Gabriel Blakemore is running out of time. The victim of a voodoo curse, Gabriel is desperate to find a cure. So desperate, in fact, he’s willing to bet on cancer patient Raven Tanglewood. Despite being on death’s door, Gabriel feels Raven’s potential. Using dragon magic, he’s able to pull her from the brink and offer her gainful employment. Believed to have psychic ability, Raven is tasked with searching for a cure and Gabriel’s salvation.

This book was a highly addictive, immensely entertaining ride through New Orleans. I was glued to this story, finishing it in one day. The characters were well-crafted and likable. The relationship between Gabriel and Raven unfolds at a delicious pace and explosive results. The plot and story-scape are incredibly imaginative. Jack has set the table for a dynamite series full of action, romance, and dragon politics.

This is the third Jack series I’ve reviewed and it might just be my favourite yet. I can hardly wait for Windy City Dragon, book two in this series. Other Jack series worth checking out are Knight Games and Fireborn Wolves.

Vengeance

In the finale to Genevieve Jack’s Fireborn Wolves trilogy, maniacal villain Alex Bloodright remains an elusive foe to the Fireborn wolves. The Flynn siblings, pack ruling royalty, have a particular score to settle and seek to ensnare the rouge wolf, however, he’s always one step ahead of the good guys. Vengeance is Silas’s story. The dark , brooding pack alpha and Carlton City detective, has been a fixture throughout Jack’s Knight World books. Known in part as the love interest of Soleil, celestial fae and brothel owner, Silas emerges in this installment as one seeking vengeance and new romance.

Vengeance follows a similar arc as the previous two books in the trilogy. This time, however, Alex’s machinations are much more diabolical and will have dire consequences if not stopped. I have a feeling this may continue in future Knight World books. This book has a strong thriller-type element. The plot twists and turns constantly and the action is riveting. Jack has created an unforgettable world of paranormal creatures whose lives are intertwined with mythological elements. Fans of the Knight Games series will enjoy the substantial part Grateful plays in this installment.

Call me crazy/hopeful, but there are a couple characters I’d like to see in future Jack novels namely vampire Julius and incubus Ryker. I like how Jack has created peripheral characters with magnetic charisma that have definitely piqued my interest.

Overall, Fireborn Wolves is a solid trilogy. Within the series there’s something for everyone; mystery, romance, and action. All three books were quick, engaging reads for me. As always, I’ve come to rely on Genevieve Jack as a perennially effective storyteller.

Book Review: Virtue (Fireborn Wolves #2) by Genevieve Jack

Virtue (Fireborn Wolves #2)
by Genevieve Jack

202 pages
Can love’s promise bloom in the shadow of a dragon’s curse?

Jason Flynn loves women. For years he’s indulged his wolf’s vice for sex— his wealth, status, and Hollywood good looks ensuring an endless supply of females to meet his need. But after an ex-lover, dragon fae princess Nickelova, threatens to use his habit to strike out against the pack, Jason realizes his regular routine has become a liability.

Selene Andrews is an acolyte to Preotka Artemis, Fireborn pack’s high priestess. Adopted as a homeless teen, her only desire is to serve the pack as Artemis’s successor. To advance, she must prove her mastery of the ritual magic required of a werewolf priestess.

When Jason’s attempt to quit his vice cold turkey goes awry, Artemis assigns Selene to break Nickelova’s curse and help Jason overcome his addiction. As a celibate acolyte, Selene has plenty to teach Jason about virtue. But is she prepared for what Jason can teach her about her deepest desires?

Genevieve Jack’s Fireborn Wolves series follows the action-packed adventures of the Flynn siblings; shifter wolf royalty. This, the second installment in the series, revolves around Jason Flynn, the younger brother to alpha Silas Flynn. Each wolf has a vice, a habit or ritual that needs to be satisfied. Jason’s vice is sex. As such, he’s been satisfying his wolfish appetites for women as long as anyone can remember. But when Jason’s bad habits spell trouble for his pack, he’s forced to turn to a young a beautiful acolyte, Selene, for help regaining control for his own sake and that of his entire pack. And Selene is definitely off limits. Sworn to remain pure in her service to the goddess, both Selene and Jason need to keep their emotions and hormones in check.

Jack is certainly delivering with this series, a spin-off to her Knight Games series. Old favourite characters make cameo appearances in Fireborn Wolves, which is always fun. Jack deftly balances action, suspense, and romance in a book that begs to be read. The romantic tension is off the charts with this one and I had a hard time putting it down. Readers are also given an absolutely delicious lead in to book three, Vengeance due later this year.

It’s been my experience that Jack never disappoints. She is definitely a perennial favourite.

Book three coming March 2017

Book Review: Vice (Fireborn Wolves Book 1) by Genevieve Jack

Vice (Fireborn Wolves Book 1)

Genre: Werewolf & Shifter Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

Some cravings can't be denied.

Werewolf Laina Flynn longs to break from the patriarchal expectations of Fireborn pack. A successful entrepreneur, she doesn't have time to be bossed around by her alpha brother, Silas, let alone to act as a proper werewolf princess.

But when a wolf is found murdered on Fireborn shifting grounds, Laina will do anything to protect her pack, even if it means posing as a waitress at a club that flies in the face of her feminist ideals. Unfortunately, her inner wolf marks the club's owner, Kyle "The King" Kingsley, as her vice--her metaphysical addiction. He becomes a hunger she can't ignore...one that could threaten her life, her family, and her pack.
˃˃˃ **Due to explicit sexual content, language, and violence this book is recommended for ages 18+**

Veterinarian Dr. Laina Flynn has a secret. While she’s confident and fiercely independent, she’s also forever tied to a patriarchal wolf pack. As princess to the Fireborn Wolf pack, Laina is expected to fulfill family and pack expectations above all else; a critical sticking point between Laina and her brother Silas. When pack loyalty forces Laina to work undercover, she must leave behind her practice and personal life to help combat a familiar, but very dangerous, threat.

Vice is an entertaining, action-packed story full of suspense and steamy romance, a formula that has served Jack well in the past. Laina is written with a feminist voice. As such, this provides a more modern romantic exchange. While I adore an alpha male in my fictional life most of the time, I don’t always enjoy the suppressive, at times abusive, undercurrent inherent to those relationships. Laina’s strength contributes to a fresh, equitable love story that doesn’t skimp on sexy.

I’ve been a long-time Genevieve Jack fan having read her entire Knight Games series, a solid saga from start to finish. Vice takes place in the Knight World with some character crossover. It was a nice touch to see an appearance from Grateful and Rick. I’m happy to report that Vice is a formidable fit for this world and I look forward to the rest of the Fireborn series.

Life has become complicated for Monk’s Hill witch Grateful Knight. With her job, love life, and very existence in jeopardy, the fourth installment of Grateful’s story is a frantic, non-stop tale of restoration and ruin.

Genevieve Jack is a first-rate paranormal storyteller. Her characters are vivid and ideas original. Jack has a way of extraordinarily describing the ordinary gestures of her characters making them human and relatable; like when a character lowers their chin, twists their lip, or laughs through their nose. She avoids the forced, tired clichés of human movement and interaction so prevalent in this genre and subtly animates likeable beings who just happen to have magical abilities. Among my favourite characters is Poe, Grateful’s raven familiar. He’s a sassy, smart-talking fantastic sidekick and the perfect counterpart to the heroic, but fallible, Grateful. An original touch I adore in this book has to be Polina’s unique method of transportation. The metal witch uses gold dust and plumbing as a supernatural waterslide to pretty much any locale.

The love story between Grateful and Rick is innovative for this genre. Rick is Grateful’s caretaker, and although he has that alpha appeal, his singular purpose is to be a partner to Grateful. The caring works both ways with little to no power imbalance, which is a refreshing novelty. In the previous installment of Knight Games, Rick’s memory is erased by the malevolent wood witch of Salem. As a result, Grateful starts her current journey without her true partner, lover, and best friend. The road to reunification seems arduous at best and life-threatening at worst, forcing Grateful to seek a network of unlikely allies. This adds to the richness of Grateful’s very character and her larger world.

Supernatural villains abound in this book. Goblins, rival witches, and the enigmatic mother-goddess Hecate all seem to have a hand in Grateful’s pending demise. The action twists and turns at a relentless pace with one perilous situation after another, all seemingly insurmountable.

A lot is revealed at the conclusion of this book, perhaps even too much. It feels like Rick and Grateful’s story careens to a central conclusion and that time quickly collapses. After such a rollicking ride, these reveals feel overly rapid and somewhat trite. Overall, I enjoyed this installment and adore this series. I look forward to the upcoming spin-off story featuring Grateful’s friend and restaurateur Logan Valentine.
