Book Review: The Darkest Destiny: A Lords of the Underworld Novella by Gena Showalter

December 7, 2021
“Gena Showalter never fails to dazzle.”
–Jeaniene Frost, New York Times bestselling author

The Darkest Destiny, an all new steamy, enemies to lovers, paranormal romance from New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter and 1,001 Dark Nights, is available now!

Forsaken. Deathless. A monster in every way. Mostly, Brochan is determined. He craves what fate promised him—the woman who will help him conquer a heavenly kingdom. He will stop at nothing to win her.

Viola, Keeper of the demon of Narcissism, lives for a single purpose—treating herself and her pet to the best life possible. But a crazed warrior is now appearing everywhere she ventures, ruining her fun . . . tempting her beyond reason and keeping her at a razor-edge of desire.

Though legions of males have attempted to win her, all have failed. Somehow, this rampaging beast is tearing down her walls, one by one, claiming he owns her heart and her very destiny. To be with him, however, she must defeat the only force strong enough to destroy her—love.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Grab your copy today, exclusively on Amazon!

Sadly, this story is JUST a novella. That means, you only get about 200 pages. That. Is. It. Which, should be a crime against humanity. So hang on every word because Gena comes to slay another one! At some point, it just becomes unfair how awesome these characters are and sadly how I will never get to meet them.

What a fun ride and all the emotion, snark, and adventure you could ask for. I loved Viola even more than expected, she's fun and wicked all wrapped up in the best bow. Sexy as hell men are the jam here and you get every bit of alpha male, plus some extra to take home.

There's not much more I can say, read the damn book! You'll love and want to read more from this author.

Excerpt
Is he as torn as I am?

No, he couldn’t be. The rogue had also delivered cleaning supplies and clothing: T-shirts and sweatpants she’d rather die than wear, as well as a French maid costume. The cruel beast obviously taunted her.

She was right the first time. Definitely hate him.

When next she caught sight of him, she would tell him. During every delivery, he had somehow remained hidden, as if he’d known when she slumbered, the coast clear. Even though she didn’t have a set schedule or know when she would succumb to the need for rest. Did he ever ponder their kiss? Or crave more of her?

A fresh tide of anger frothed. He’d gifted her with the best kiss of her life, the truth of his adoration drowning out the demon’s lies. Then he had rejected her. Abandoned her.

He must know what separation from an adoring public did to her. He’d followed her for months. But still, he stayed away?

That settled it. No more kisses for him!

Tremors shook her as she motored forward. When her knees almost buckled, she whimpered. The weakened demon was feeding, weakening her. The heartless fiend had even begun revealing those long-buried memories, the terrible truth now so clear…

As she’d smiled and chatted in those recollections, she’d destroyed people with her words. Males and females, mortals and immortals, had withered under her praises. Because her praises were insults!

Scraping noises halted her. Her ears twitched. Did she detect huffing too?

Someone was here!

Gasping, she pressed herself against the nearest wall, hiding in a shadowy corner. Though she was brave—the bravest!—she knew there were times to be leery. This was one such time. She had little strength and few weapons at her disposal.

Had the Forsaken found her? Maybe Brochan had returned for good. Perhaps a stranger had stumbled upon the realm. What if Fluffy had arrived?

Please be Fluffy.

About the Author:
Gena Showalter is the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of a multitude of sub-genres within romance: paranormal, Fantasy, contemporary, and young adult. She’s also written standalone novels, novellas and anthologies, as well as co-authored a nonfiction guide about how to write a book in a year.

Gena lives in Oklahoma with her husband, two adult children who grew up way too fast, and menagerie of dogs and cats who enjoy farting while she works, walking across her keyboard during pivotal scenes and demanding pets at all hours of the day and night. Her novels have appeared in Cosmopolitan’s Red Hot Reads and Seventeen magazine. She’s been interviewed on Nightline and mentioned on Orange is the New Black—the very moment her family decided she might be a real writer after all.

Chances are good she’s hard at work on her next novel. Chances are even better that the book is a twisted tale featuring an alpha male with a dark side and the strong woman who (lovingly…sometimes) kneecaps him.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Gena Showalter comes a new story in her Lords of the Underworld series…

For centuries, Galen the Treacherous has been the most hated immortal in the Underworld. With good reason! This bad boy of bad boys has lied, stolen, cheated and killed with abandon. Possessed by the demons of Jealousy and False Hope, he has always lived for a single purpose: destroy everything.

Then he met her.

Former demon turned human femme fatale — Legion Honey -- sought to kill Galen, but ended up parting with her virginity instead. Afraid of their sizzling connection, she ran away…and ended up trapped in hell, tortured and abused in the worst of ways. Now she’s free, and a shell of herself, afraid of her own shadow.

Galen's hunger for Legion has only grown. Now the warrior with nothing to lose must help her rekindle the fire that once burned inside her. But as desires blaze white-hot, will Legion run again? Or will the unlikely pair succumb to love at long last?

What a read! Sadly, 161 pages is just not enough! This author comes hard (and I mean that in ALL ways) with every single aspect of her stories. Action and adventure are dripping from the pages and the steamy sex scenes......meoooooow!

I love everything Gena has created and will continue to be a fan. She writes with colorful meaning and brings to life these awesome characters. Love it. All I want is more.

Give me more and give it now! Getting 5 sheep.

Book Review: The Darkest Warrior (Lords of the Underworld) by Gena Showalter + except

The Darkest Warrior (Lords of the Underworld) Hardcoverby Gena Showalter
June 26, 2018
480 pages
Publisher: HQN
A searing Lords of the Underworld tale by New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter, featuring a beastly prince and the wife he will wage war to keep

He is ice…

Puck the Undefeated, host of the demon of Indifference, cannot experience emotion without punishment, so he allows himself to feel nothing. Until her. According to ancient prophecy, she is the key to avenging his past, saving his realm and ruling as king. All he must do? Steal her from the man she loves—and marry her.

She is fire…

Gillian Shaw has suffered many tragedies in her too-short life, but nothing could have prepared the fragile human for her transition into immortality. To survive, she must wed a horned monster who both intrigues and frightens her…and become the warrior queen she was born to be.

Together they burn.
As a rising sense of possession and obsession overtake Puck, so does insatiable lust. The more he learns about his clever, resourceful wife, the more he craves her. And the more time Gillian spends with her protective husband, the more she aches for him. But the prophecy also predicts an unhappily-ever-after. Can Puck defeat fate itself to keep the woman who brought his deadened heart back to life? Or will they succumb to destiny, losing each other…and everything they’ve been fighting for?

Gena Showalter is one of my long-time lovers, I mean bff, wait...I mean fav authors. Or all of the above. She's basically one of the main reasons I LOVE reading PNR. It just comes down to this, she knows how to write a damn good book. Period.

Sexy men, check. Sexy women, check. Hot as hell romance, check-check. Action and epic adventure, check! There's not one part of any aspect of this PNR I would want to change. My only criticism would be, give me more pages! I could read 1000 pages and not even stop for a meal or maybe even to pee. Dirty hair, don't care.

Also, does anyone else remember the name Puck from the MTV Real World tv show? Cause I sure as hell do! Ok, sure it was hard to get over that in the beginning but by the end I didn't care. I love Puck!

I loved this book and there's so much I could say about it but I am not going to. Buy it, read it and love it as much as I did.

These stories breath life into my 8-4 hard working soul. I can't say how much of a wonderful escape they are!
Pain seared Puck, shoving a roar past his lips. A demon had entered his body, and now tore into his organs. It bit and clawed, too, and yet he experienced no outward signs of injury.

Frantic, he dropped his sword to rake his nails over his chest, slicing skin and muscle—to no avail. The creature remained inside him, a dark presence, howling with a toxic mix of hate and pleasure.

The blood in Puck’s veins might as well have been fuel; every cell in his body seemed to catch fire, melting him from the inside out as he...changed? Two rings of fire erupted on the crown of his skull, as if circles had been burned into the bone. He reached up and felt...horns?

Breath wheezed through clenched teeth as he yanked at hanks of brown fur sprouting on his legs. Next, a hard shell grew over his feet—hooves?—as his leather boots ripped apart at the seams.

Changing shapes wasn’t new to him, but this transformation had control of him, not the other way around. He couldn’t stop it.

Jagged black lines appeared on his chest, small rivers of lava burning as they spread. An image formed. A butterfly with wings as sharp as shattered glass. Different colors shimmered in the firelight, one after the other, altering as various emotions flooded him.

Mostly, panic grabbed Puck by the neck and held firm, choking him. Was this a hallucination, caused by smoke?

Or was he becoming a monster for good?

His knees gave out, unable to support his weight. As he lay on the ground, panting, the panic died. His gaze landed on the sword, and the pride he’d experienced only moments before faded before disappearing altogether. The devotion he bore for his realm and people...gone. He felt nothing. The sword was a scrap of finely honed metal, the realm a meaningless lo- cation, its citizens a nonentity.

Puck searched for emotion, any emotion, hidden anywhere. There! Love for Sin, a shining beacon.

He would protect the younger male from this...whatever this was. But, as he attempted to reach for his brother, muscle locked on bone, holding him immobile, and panic returned.

“Sin!”

Sin wouldn’t meet his gaze.
Something’s wrong...

A terrible nothingness began to creep through Puck a second time—this one directed at his brother. Precious Sin. Treasured Sin. Puck’s reason for...everything. But an invisible dagger cut into his heart, affection draining out...draining...

Still he fought. “Love you,” he rasped. Can’t lose Sin. Can’t... But even as he spoke, his heart emptied.

One moment his love blazed, a light inextinguishable by war, persecution or travesty, the next it was nothing but a snuffed-out torch.

Puck blinked up at Sin and felt...nothing. He hadn’t forgotten their past, or the many ways his brother had aided him throughout the centuries, or everything Sin had given up on his behalf, but he cared not at all.

Muscles unlocking from bone at last, he stood. Silent, he backed away from his brother. He would go for a walk, think about what had happened and what he should do next.

“Puck—”

He strode out of the tent, never once glancing back.

Sheep Book Review: The Darkest Torment (Lords of the Underworld #12) by Gena Showalter

The Darkest Torment (Lords of the Underworld #12)
by Gena Showalter
Hardcover, 512 pages
Published May 31st 2016
by Harlequin HQN
Driven to his death by the demon of Distrust, Baden spent centuries in purgatory. Now he's back, but at what cost? Bound to the king of the underworld, an even darker force, he's unable to withstand the touch of another...and he's quickly devolving into a heartless assassin with an uncontrollable temper. Things only get worse when a mission goes awry and he finds himself saddled with a bride—just not his own.

Famed dog trainer Katarina Joelle is forced to marry a monster to protect her loved ones. When she's taken hostage by the ruthless, beautiful Baden immediately after the ceremony, she's plunged into a war between two evils—with a protector more dangerous than the monsters he hunts. They are meant to be enemies, but neither can resist the passion burning between them...and all too soon the biggest threat is to her heart.

But as Baden slips deeper into the abyss, she'll have to teach him to love...or lose him forever.

So here we are at book 12 and I STILL can not get enough of this talented author and her amazing stories! I'm so addicted!!!!

Like all the LOTU books, you are taken on one hell of a ride. Hot, scary, action packed, alpha males, badass females and life lessons. It's a yo-yo for your reader soul and every single masterful stoke dives you back down in to the next page. The next chapter. The best moments and saddest all combined. These books are the lifeblood to my PNR soul!

Yes, there's a big ole serving of side characters, stories coming down the pipes and past tales that need some attention. But that's the intricate weave of this saga, it spans over years and across dimensions.

Sure, our main male Baden has a bad past. Misunderstood much? Maybe. But every one needs a good come back story, I'm so happy Baden gets his Rocky moment! And once again the hot and heavy romance is out of this world! I know people may not all agree or like the way these two come together, but keep in mind it's NOT REAL. Sometimes you just have to go with it. I did.

If you're not swinging from the rafters, sobbing and laughing out loud during this one then check yourself for a pulse! You get everything you want and need. This latest edition is yet another PNR hit and I can't wait to see what is coming next!

“—friends are looking for you,” an unfamiliar voice said, breaking into her awareness. It belonged to a male. Was deep and raspy, with the same cocky and perpetually amused timbre as William. “I think they want your head on a platter.”

“Thanks to you, Baden brought trouble to Buda,” William replied, utterly unconcerned by the threat. “Gillian needs peace and quiet right now.”

“I told you not to befriend her. She’s human.”

“And I told you to go fuck yourself. More than once!”

“Is that any way to speak to your dear father?”

“Adopted father,” William grumbled. “And I’m tempted to say worse. Let’s take this conversation outside.”

So. He was speaking with Hades, she realized, sweat beading on her brow. The bad boy of the underworld. And that was saying something!

William didn’t know it, but Hades had appeared to her one night. He’d warned her: Stay away from my son. You aren’t the one for him. Don’t make me prove it.

He’d scared her, but she hadn’t heeded him. William was too important to her.

“Not being blood related to me is an embarrassing secret you’d do well to hide,” Hades remarked now.

Gillian cracked open her eyes…caught sight of two towering shadows on the balcony.

“She’s deathly ill. She’s going to die if you fail to make her immortal,” William snapped. “So, make her immortal.”

“I have the power to change her, yes. But in her condition, she’ll die before she’s turned.”

“Then you’re useless to me. Leave.”

“Tsk-tsk. So rude. You might want to be nice to me, my son. I’m the only thing standing between you and scores of angry husbands you’ve cuckolded over the centuries.”

“As if a legion of them would be any match for me.”

“True. I trained you well. But the girl…they’d hurt her without a qualm.”

William unleashed a storm of curses. “Anyone touches her, and I’ll spend the rest of eternity ensuring they and everyone they love suffer unending torments.”

“What’s so special about her?” Hades asked.

Yes, Liam. What’s so special about me? She’d always wondered.

“I’m not discussing her with you.”

“I’m discussing her with you, then. You can’t be with her. You can’t be with anyone. You know as well as I that your happiness walks hand-in-hand with your doom.”

Gillian had heard a little about William’s doom. Aka, his curse. The woman he loved was destined to destroy him.

Did Gillian believe in curses? Yes and no. She’d lived with demon-possessed immortals for three years now. She’d seen things. Supernatural things. Wild things. Impossible things. But curses…good luck versus bad luck? No. Bad things happened because bad decisions were made. End of story.

“I’m searching for a way to break—” William began.

“You’ve been searching,” Hades interjected. “For centuries.”

“My book—”

“Is nonsense. A trick to make you hope for what can never be so that your demise will be that much sweeter. If the book could be decoded, it would have been decoded by now.”

Another tense pause. Then William spat, “Did you come here to piss me off?”

“Pissing you off is a bonus. I came to warn you.”

“Well, you’ve done both.”

“No, son, I haven’t.” Hades’s voice hardened. “The warning is this: if I think you’re falling for the girl, I’ll kill her myself.”

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with her most explosive Lords of the Underworld tale to date, about a fierce warrior on the brink of sanity who will stop at nothing to claim the exquisite human with the power to soothe the beast inside him…

Bound to the king of the underworld, an even darker force, he’s unable to withstand the touch of another…and he’s quickly devolving into a heartless assassin with an uncontrollable temper. But as Baden slips deeper into the abyss, she’ll have to teach him to love…or lose him forever.

Excerpt:
Katarina wasn’t afraid of Baden. Not anymore.

He took a step to the side, intending to move around her. Oh, no. She flattened her hands on his shoulders, keeping him in place.

“I want to know what’s wrong with you.” She said. “Tell me.”

He snapped his teeth at her in a show of dominance. “You think you want to know my problem. You’re wrong.”

Her tone dry, she said, “I’m so glad you know my mind better than I do.”

“Very well. I need sex.” He threw the words at her as if they were weapons. “Badly.”

Whoa. Blindside!

Heart pounding, she jerked her hands away from him. “Sex...from me?”

“Yesss.” A hiss. “Only from you.”

Only. Amazing how one little word could send pleasure soaring through her, warming her. “You told me never to touch you.” Which she’d just done, she realized. My bad.

“I’ve changed my mind.” His gaze dropped, lingered on her lips.

Burning her... “But you and I...we’re a different species.” As if that mattered to her body. Gimme!

He took a step closer, invading her personal space. “We’ll fit, I promise you.”

Tristo hrmenych! The raspy quality of his voice, all smoke and gravel...she shivered with longing. Must resist his allure.

But...but...why? Before she’d committed to Peter, she’d dated around, had made out in movie theaters, cars and on couches. She’d liked kissing and touching and “riding the belt buckle,” as her friends had called it. Then, after committing to Peter, she’d gifted him with her virginity. At first, he hadn’t known what to do with her—he’d been just as inexperienced—and she’d left each encounter disappointed. When finally she’d gathered the courage to tell him what she wanted, he’d satisfied her well.

She missed sex. But connection...intimacy...she thought she missed those more.

The dogs barked, jolting her from her thoughts. They’d cleaned their food bowls, and now wanted to play. She clasped Baden’s hand to lead him out of the kennel. He jerked away, severing contact.

One action. Tons of hurt.

“I’m allowed to touch you and you want to have sex with me, but you’re still disgusted by me.” She stomped outside the kennel, done with him. “Well, I’m leaving. Good riddance! Your do-what-I-say-or-else attitude was annoying, anyway.”

He darted in front of her, stopping her. Breath caught in her throat as sunlight streamed over him, paying his chiseled features absolute tribute, making his bronzed skin glimmer.

So beautiful. Too beautiful.

“I’m not disgusted by you. You need me. I’ve come to accept it,” he admitted, looking away from her. “But being skin-to-skin with another is painful for me. We’ll have to proceed carefully. And you’ll get over your annoyance.”

Another order! She would show him the error of his ways.

Book Review: The Darkest Touch (Lords of the Underworld Book 12) by Gena Showalter

The Darkest Touch Lords of the Underworld (Book 12)
By: Gena Showalter
Paranormal Romance
496 Pages

Plot:
Fierce immortal warrior. Host to the demon of Disease. Torin's every touch causes sickness and death—and a worldwide plague. Carnal pleasure is utterly forbidden, and though he has always overcome temptation with an iron will, his control is about to shatter.

She is Keeleycael. The Red Queen. When the powerful beauty with shocking vulnerabilities escapes from a centuries-long imprisonment, the desire that simmers between her and Torin is scorching. His touch could mean her end, but resisting her is the hardest battle he's ever fought—and the only battle he fears he can't win.

It's crazy how, sometimes, a book and actually a series in general, can end up meaning so much to you. How characters both complex and diverse can haunt the coroners of your mind. That these immensely entertaining immortals can be real in your heart. I have loved and enjoyed each and every edition to this ongoing saga. It's become something I crave reading. Again and again.

Here we are, book 12, and so much has happened to these guys and gals it's hard to sum it all up! So I won't. New readers should start at book 1 and follow the journey to where we diehard readers are now. It's worth it. Trust me.

Torin's story has been highly anticipated for quiet some time now. Did I know how badass of a warrior he was before this? NO, hell no. Do I know it now? You're damn skippy I do! He's got the skills to kill some fools like dead and drop a beating heart at your feet just for funzies. He's fan yourself hot. He's deadly. And he's all male. LOVED it.

My only big let down was his wishy-washy personality when it came to love and being in any kind of a relationship. Yeah, yeah, he's the carrier of disease. I get it. But he kept doing the I love you/I have to push you away for your own good, just a few too many times. Stick to a decision already!!!!

On the other end of the spectrum is The Red Queen. I swear, she's my new book BFF. This chick is amazingly funny and so sweet, she just needed a chance to show it. Though she is super powerful, I disliked that many people could combat that power with a trump card. Let her be badass! Cause she was. Aside from that, I loved her and I loved the romance plus the die hard dedication she has for those she holds dear.

More amazing side characters then you can shake a giants stick at. Tons of adventure and signature action-packed sequences keep the whole story moving at a wonderfully paced tempo.

If you love PNR and can't wait to get balls deep in some steamy romance, then check this one out!

She appeared in front of him, displaying more tanned skin than she concealed, her hair falling around her face in lush, golden waves. Her eyes glittered with remnants of her anger. Her lips were slightly swollen and pinker than usual.

“Temper much?” she quipped.

His relief was palpable. She hadn’t forgotten him! But the relief was quickly replaced by concern. “Are you all right? Did someone hit you?”

She blinked with confusion. “No. Why?” “Your lips are swollen.”

She rubbed them, color heating her cheeks. “Someone didn’t hit me, but someone sure did hit on me.”

Hit on her. As in kissed her.

Already on edge, Torin. Utterly. Erupted.

He forgot everything he’d planned to do and say and got in Keeley’s face, snarling, “Who was it?”

Her eyes widened. “Hades. Why?”

“You dare ask why? You belong to me! We agreed. You do not kiss other men, Keeley. Ever. Have you for- gotten my rules?”

Her jaw dropped, and she gasped out a few unintelligible words as if she couldn’t quite figure out what to say to him.

He stood in place, breathing too quickly, too heavily, his throat and lungs burning. He reached for her, but as so many times before, fisted his hands and dropped them just before contact. This is crazy. I’m crazy. I have to leave.

“Are you…thinking about touching me?” she asked, her eyes widening again.

No, she had to leave. He could not be in public right now. “Go shopping. Buy yourself something pretty. My treat.” He basically tossed his credit card at her. He should be calm by the time she finished. “Come back in an hour. Maybe two. Actually, we’ll reconvene to- morrow.”

“You are,” she said. “You’re thinking… Even craving me. You don’t like the thought of another man’s hands on me, and you want to replace the memory with your hands.”

That. Yes. Hades would die, and Torin…Torin would touch this woman and never stop.

He gnashed his molars. “Last chance, Keeley. I sug- gest you take it and leave.” Soon. His control was almost completely shredded.

“No way. You’re the big bad warrior, yet I’ve had to come on to you time and time again. I’ve had to battle within myself—worth the price or not worth it. Well, it’s your turn.”

“There is no damn way you just suggested I haven’t done the same. I’ve battled.”

“When have you ever caved without prompting from me? You’ve resisted me so easily, always walking away. Sure, you’ve snarled while you’ve done the walking, but still you left me behind. So, tell me. When did you ever—”

“So easily?” he roared. Had she just said so easily? She had no clue about the intensity of his need—but he would teach her better.

Torin cupped her by the nape, yanked her close and smashed his mouth against hers. The kiss was a brutal assault meant to silence her, to dominate and possess. He held her still, making her take it, take everything. But the moment she softened against him, welcomed him inside her mouth, the darkness churning inside him switched gears. From the need to punish and master to the need to seduce and please.

This was Keeley. His princess. She deserved his best. He gentled the pressure, rolling his tongue inside her mouth, learning her all over again, tasting her. Summer berries and melted honey. So sweet. And mine. All mine. He framed her cheeks, angled her head and rolled his tongue just a little deeper. This time, she met him with a roll of her own.

That was his undoing.
