ROGUE DARKNESS (Immortal Guardians Book 12) by Dianne Duvall - FAVORITE QUOTES + giveaway

Hello! Thank you for joining us. I’m excited to be here today, celebrating the release of ROGUE DARKNESS. If you enjoy paranormal romance that features powerful immortal males who love strong women, edge-of-your-seat-action, fun banter, laugh-out-loud humor, and sizzling passion, then I think you should pick this one up. (Don’t worry if this is your first time encountering my Immortal Guardians series. If you dive in with this one, you won’t feel lost.)

To give you a taste of what you’ll find in ROGUE DARKNESS and hopefully whet your appetite for more, I thought I would share five of my favorite quotes from it. :-)
1
Nicole shook her head. “You are so weird. You think my nose is cute?”

“Yes, damn it. It’s freakishly appealing.”

Taking him by the shoulders, she turned him around and pushed him toward the door. “Go get laid, Sean.”

Laughing, he dug in his heels and faced her. “I didn’t say it turned me on.” Assuming a thoughtful expression, he tilted his head to one side, narrowed his eyes, and stroked his chin. “Although…”

2
Nicole scowled at Étienne. “Did you read my thoughts?” She seriously doubted Sean would’ve mentally described himself as hot.

“Yes,” the French telepathic immortal admitted without remorse. “But only because I heard something foul went down last night and was worried.”

Krysta nodded with exaggerated solemnity. “And because he’s nosy.”

Étienne laughed.

Nicole turned to Sean. “Okay. So I did inadvertently tell them. But I did not mentally use the word hot to describe you.”

“Yes, you did,” Étienne corrected her. “Many times.”

“Damn it,” she grumbled.

3
“I love you, Sean.”

Amber light flared to life in his eyes. “I love you, too.” His lips touched hers, the contact conveying such immense tenderness that tears welled in her eyes.

She pressed a palm to his stubbled cheek. “As more than a friend?”

Though he turned his head slightly so he could nuzzle her palm, his bright eyes held hers. “As my everything.”

4
Nicole bit her lip as a new concern arose. “I didn’t do anything I should feel embarrassed about, did I?” A vampire’s bite didn’t just leave victims loopy. It could also lower inhibitions.

“Other than ravishing me and stealing my innocence, then farting in your sleep? No.”

She laughed. “I did not!”

“Okay. You didn’t fart in your sleep.”

She grinned. “But I did steal your innocence?”

“No,” he said, injecting his response with amusing petulance. “I kept waiting for you to, but noOo. All you wanted to do was sleep.”

Again, she laughed.

5
Seth’s lips twitched as his dark eyes lit with amusement. “That was a first for me, by the way. I have never in all of my long existence had to rescue an immortal who _____.”

[ I don’t want to spoil the surprise. ;-) ]

ROGUE DARKNESS (Immortal Guardians Book 12)
by Dianne Duvall
June 13th, 2023
New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall brings readers the next stand-alone novel in her “fast-paced and humorous” (Publishers Weekly) and “utterly addictive” (RT Book Reviews) Immortal Guardians series.

Immortal Guardians have hunted and slain psychotic vampires for thousands of years. Now someone is hunting them. Humanity remains oblivious to the existence of immortals, vampires, and gifted ones, so how does this rising nemesis even know who they are and where to find them? Could it be the machinations of an old nemesis—one they thought they defeated? Or is this something new? Because unlike the foes they’ve faced in the past, this one doesn’t just target immortals. He targets those who are near and dear to them.

A gifted one under the Immortal Guardians’ protection, Nicole has worked hard to land her dream job—that of an Immortal Guardian’s Second or mortal guard—and loves working with Sean. He’s smart. He’s funny. And despite the sometimes dark existence he leads, the two of them laugh a lot. Years spent as a special ops soldier prepared Nicole well, enabling her to keep Sean safe despite his tendency to dive headlong into danger. But can it keep her safe? The enemy they face is determined and shrewd. Uncovering his identity may require new methods of engagement and force her to take a few risks.

Sean hasn’t been immortal long, but he knows the rules. And according to the rules, Nicole is off-limits. She’s his Second. His guard. His best friend. The one person who knows him better than anyone else. Though he loves every minute he spends with her, friendship is all they can ever have... isn’t it? Sean soon begins to question that as the two of them engage in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with the enemy, one that will reveal the true depth of their feelings for each other and drive him to abandon the rules altogether.

Book Review: Backpacking Through Bedlam (InCryptid Book 12) by Seanan McGuire

Backpacking Through Bedlam (InCryptid Book 12)
by Seanan McGuire
March 7, 2023
Publisher: DAW
ASIN: B0B6ZCG4P3
ISBN: 9780756418571
Genre: urban fanasy
Seanan McGuire's New York Times-bestselling and Hugo Award-nominated urban fantasy InCryptid series continues with the twelfth book following the Price family, cryptozoologists who study and protect the creatures living in secret all around us.

Reunion, noun:
1. The state of being united again.

Reconciliation, noun:
1. An act of reconciling, as when former enemies agree to an amiable truce.
2. The process of making consistent or compatible.
3. See also “impossible.”

Alice Price-Healy gave up her life for fifty years to focus completely on the search for her missing husband. The danger of focus like that is that it leaves little room for thinking about what happens after…and now that she’s finally managed to find Thomas, she has no idea what she’s supposed to do next. The fact that he comes with a surrogate daughter who may or may not have some connection to Alice’s recently adopted grandson is just icing on the complicated cake.

So the three of them are heading for the most complicated place in the universe: they’re going home.

But things on Earth have changed while Alice, Thomas, and Sally have been away. The Covenant of St. George, antagonized by Verity’s declaration of war and Sarah’s temporary relocation of an entire college campus, is trying to retake North America from the cryptids and cryptozoologists who’ve been keeping the peace for the past hundred years. And they’re starting in New York.

Alice and company have barely been back for an hour before the Ocean Lady and the Queen of the Routewitches send them to New York. They find themselves embroiled in the politics of dragons, kidnappings, and of course, the most dangerous people of all: family.

Getting “back to normal” may be Alice's hardest task yet.

Alice Healey-Price spent 50 years searching for her husband in the last book, Spelunking Through Hell, to get her happy ending. Now that she has found him, the daughter he adopted, and the people that he had been protecting, she has conflicting feelings about him and their life together. Plus the fact their own children have grown up and no longer need their parents. When they return to their dimension once their mission is accomplished, they find troubling things like the Covenant of St. George trying to retake America, starting with New York.

If you like cryptids, Price-worshipping mice, complicated family relationships, true love, snappy dialogue, worldbuilding, and action, this story will give you happy ending in another adventure of the Price family. Ms. McGuire keeps packing in stories that grow better and better with each book.

I gave Backpacking Through Bedlam (InCryptid Book 12) 5 sheep.

ASIN: B00T2E7ZEY
Number of pages: 185

Human-wolf hybrid Darci Diamond spends every full moon locked in auntie’s basement in Southern Oregon. Her excruciating shifts terrify her, the last one causing her heart to stop beating. Seeking a cure, she journeys to Los Lobos.

Ross Luparell returns to the struggling Tao pack, using his millions made in the tech industry to build homes for pack families in need. He never imagined he would also find his one true mate. But when a hybrid with the biggest green eyes he’s ever seen lands on his doorstep in the middle of a wicked summer storm, there’s no denying it. She’s the one.

She wants a normal human life, free from pain-filled shifts. He won’t give up on her Wolf, and will do whatever it takes to help her accept her true nature. But can he convince her to trust him with her heart?

While the official release date of this story was back in 2015, I just had the chance to get my paws on it. What a truly fun and hot read, for 189 pages you just can't go wrong!

There was an almost immediate chemistry between our leading couple. I loved reading their evolution not only together but as individuals as well. While it's no secret that vamps are my main squeeze, I'm really glad I went for a walk in the wolfy side.

The steamy romance and dirty talk were HOT, it's PNR for a reason! I also really enjoyed the backstory specifically on our main gal Darci, she has a past and future that looks uncertain at times. This one really drew me in and kept me going until the final page.

I loved it for all the right reasons and recommend it to anyone looking for a new steamy read.

KD

Excerpt:
He reached out with his Wolf senses. The feedback froze his fingers on the doorknob. Female. Damn, she smelled good. Human. Wolf. Wait…both? The copper tang of blood hit his nose. And injured.

He flung open the door. His abrupt move caught his visitor off guard, one small, white fist raised to knock. The woman startled and fell forward. Catching her, he pulled her inside, kicking the door shut with his foot.

She sagged against him, a shivering bundle of wet woman. Underneath the dampness, her scent drop-kicked his gut. Apples and cinnamon. Roses and honey. His body perked up, taking extreme notice. He fought the growl of possession threatening to tear out of his throat. Holy hell, had his potential mate just walked into his home in the middle of a storm?

The scent of her blood jump-started his brain into action. He lowered her gently to the floor. “Jesus. You okay?”

His instincts urged him to check her for wounds, but he was a stranger and didn’t want to spook her. But goddamn, he wanted to touch her. Peel off her wet clothes. See all of her. With a jacket covering her torso, tight jeans hiding her legs, and her ball cap pulled low on her face, all he’d seen so far was her quivering pale chin, full red lips, and those delicate, trembling hands.

“S-s-sorry, d-dripping all ov-v-ver your f-f-floor,” she said, teeth chattering. Her snow white fingers curled on the hardwood, arms trembling with her effort to keep herself upright. Blood streaked the wood. A line of liquid crimson slid down her jaw and dripped from her chin onto her jacket.

To hell with propriety. “You’re injured. Let me help you.” He pulled off her cap and damn near swallowed his tongue.

Big green eyes blinked up at him from a face so pale it made him think of moonlight. Drenched, short black hair lay plastered to her head, the ends framing features reminiscent of the fairies his sister loved to draw for the hidden-object games she designed. Ethereal beauty. My beauty. He stroked a knuckle down her cheek then ran his thumb over her soft, full lower lip.

She flinched and batted his hand away, falling to her side in the process.

Ross snapped back to reality with a healthy hit of guilt. “Shit. Sorry.”

His gaze shot to her forehead where a two-inch cut sent blood trailing over her prominent cheekbone with its silky-smooth skin he’d so enjoyed caressing—

Shit. He gave himself a mental ass kicking for scaring her. “I’m Ross. You’re safe here. Promise.”

Book Review: Night and Silence (October Daye #12) by Seanan McGuire

Night and Silence (October Daye)
by Seanan McGuire
September 4, 2018
Publisher: DAW
ASIN: B0782VCM7K ISBN: 978-0756414764
Things are not okay.

In the aftermath of Amandine's latest betrayal, October "Toby" Daye's fragile self-made family is on the verge of coming apart at the seams. Jazz can't sleep, Sylvester doesn't want to see her, and worst of all, Tybalt has withdrawn from her entirely, retreating into the Court of Cats as he tries to recover from his abduction. Toby is floundering, unable to help the people she loves most heal. She needs a distraction. She needs a quest.

What she doesn't need is the abduction of her estranged human daughter, Gillian. What she doesn't need is to be accused of kidnapping her own child by her ex-boyfriend and his new wife, who seems to be harboring secrets of her own. There's no question of whether she'll take the case. The only question is whether she's emotionally prepared to survive it.

Signs of Faerie's involvement are everywhere, and it's going to take all Toby's nerve and all her allies to get her through this web of old secrets, older hatreds, and new deceits. If she can't find Gillian before time runs out, her own child will pay the price. One question remains:

Who in Faerie remembered Gillian existed? And what do they stand to gain? No matter how this ends, Toby's life will never be the same.

Toby should be thinking about getting married to Tybalt with him and Jazz back home and her quest to bring her older pureblood sister back to her mother, but instead, her life is tearing apart. Tybalt avoids her due to PSTD from being trapped in cat form. Jazz can’t sleep, and Toby’s ex and his human wife have appeared at her doorstep, demanding to know if she’d kidnapped her daughter, Gillian. Which she hasn’t. Agreeing to find her. Toby begins the search at the campus of Gillian’s college, where she was last seen. The clues stink of Faerie involvement and there are secrets too, one even connected to her in a way she never saw coming.

Once again, Seanan McGuire gives another great adventure for October Daye and for the readers.

I give Night and Silence (October Daye) 5 sheep.

Book Review: The Trouble with Twelfth Grave (Charley Davidson Book 12) by Darynda Jones

The Trouble with Twelfth Grave (Charley Davidson Book 12)
by Darynda Jones
October 31, 2017

St. Martin's Press
Pages: 304
Ever since Reyes Farrow escaped from a hell dimension in which Charley Davidson accidentally trapped him, the son of Satan has been brimstone-bent on destroying the world his heavenly Brother created. His volatile tendencies have put Charley in a bit of a pickle. But that’s not the only briny vegetable on her plate. While trying to domesticate the feral being that used to be her husband, she also has to deal with her everyday life of annoying all manner of beings—some corporeal, some not so much—as she struggles to right the wrongs of society. Only this time she’s not uncovering a murder. This time she’s covering one up.

Add to that her new occupation of keeping a startup PI venture—the indomitable mystery-solving team of Amber Kowalski and Quentin Rutherford—out of trouble and dealing with the Vatican’s inquiries into her beloved daughter, and Charley is on the brink of throwing in the towel and becoming a professional shopper. Or possibly a live mannequin. But when someone starts attacking humans who are sensitive to the supernatural world, Charley knows it’s time to let loose her razor sharp claws. Then again, her number one suspect is the dark entity she’s loved for centuries. So the question becomes: Can she tame the unruly beast before it destroys everything she’s worked so hard to protect?

Charley tried multiple times to summon Reyes from the god glass, but each time she was denied. When he suddenly broke the god glass and escaped, Charley was elated until she realized there was something not quite right about him. As Reyes fights to find the ash and ember, Charley fights to find her husband within this god. She doesn’t care who she must make a deal with to save him and the world.

Someone has started attacking people in very odd ways and the only connection between the victims is they are all sensitive to the supernatural world. Charley won’t accept that it could be Reyes and she will do anything to solve the case.

Oh, my this was one of the best of her books. Paving the way for book 13, her final book in the Charley Davidson series, Jones started laying the ground work for the final battles. Make sure you have plenty of time to read, because you aren’t going to want to put it down until the very end.

With Declan O'Carroll on Fairie and Chris Gordon on Earth what could go wrong? Try everything. Scheming elves, deadly zombies, killer goblins, flaming dragons and dirty diapers. With a growing, insidious threat to Earth, Chris and Tanya race to save lives while Declan, Stacia and friends work just as hard to save their own lives on an alien world, far removed from the comforts and safety of home. Only together will they overcome the odds. But come on, with this team, maybe the odds should look out.

Ashley is the Speaker for the dragons and heads to Fairie to negotiate for the dragons with the Winter and Summer courts. Accompanying her for protection, is her dad, Ian as well as the most powerful warlock Declan, his werewolf girlfriend Stacia, rounded out by brother and sister combo, Mack and Jetta who are masters with weapons. Both queens are furious when Declan arrives in Fairie because witches were band from Fairie a long time ago, but due to a loop hole Declan can stay. Declan has always been underestimated and the inhabitants of Fairie are no different.

While Ashley and crew are in Fairie, Chris, Tanya and the team have their hands full on earth with an alien invasion of almost indestructible creatures who infect anybody it encounters except vampires. As Chris’s team works with Omega to try to stop the aliens from destroying the planet some very unexpected situations arise.

Conroe’s Demon Accords series are well written and hold my attention, making 545 pages seem like 200. Each of the stories have focused on a set of characters, allowing me to get to know them like they are long lost friends. In Winterfall two stories are going on simultaneously even though you are getting more insight into Mack and Jetta which was a nice change of pace. Always original this is another hit by Conroe.

A snow leopard shifter in the prime of his life, the last thing on August’s mind is tying himself to one female. He welcomes a different one to his bed each night, or at least he had until five months ago when he became alpha. The duties and pressures of running his pride have his libido dead on arrival—until a trip to London to discuss business with the former alpha lands him in the path of a beautiful, bewitching tigress who awakens a passion in him that flares white hot and a need of her that consumes his every moment.

Promised at birth to a male she has never met, Maya has left her pride behind to go to the tiger alpha who is to be her mate, but she can’t leave without saying goodbye to her older brother, Talon. A stop in London at Underworld to see him one last time turns out far different, and far more dangerous, than how she had imagined it when she sets eyes on an alluring crimson-haired stranger who stirs new, unbidden feelings in her, desires that rouse her fiercest and most frightening instincts and demand she stake a claim on him—her fated mate.

Will Maya be strong enough to place her pride and her family’s safety before the desires of her own heart? And will August unravel his feelings for the black-haired beauty before it’s too late and he loses her forever?

REVIEW
Turned By A Tiger and Tamed By A Tiger are the two most recent installments in Felicity Heaton’s Eternal Mates series, a paranormal romance series spanning time, dimension, and a whole host of paranormal factions. The ‘tiger’ books are a bit of a miniseries within the larger set with a third tiger book expected later this summer. I am relatively new to the Eternal Mates series having begun with Haunted by the King of Death, Eternal Mates #11. While I imagine reading the entire series may enhance the experience, I have found that Heaton does an excellent job bringing her readers up to speed. I’m of the opinion that these books can be read as standalone novels or as part of the larger series.

Turned and Tamed are both written in the tradition of ‘mates at first sight’. While some of the romantic tension is diffused with this type of storyline, there is still plenty of angst and numerous obstacles standing in the way of a romantic happily ever after. Class struggles, race differences, family expectations, rival lovers, war, mayhem, and just plain miscommunication abound. Both books follow the romantic trials and tribulations of a shifter tiger pride’s ruling family; siblings who have been taught that pride duty and honor supersede personal interest. Both books were quick, fun, engaging reads.

Heaton boasts an incredible catalogue of paranormal romance writing with several standalone novels as well as ongoing series. I’m also enjoying another Heaton series, Guardians of Hades. While the foundational plotlines of her books don’t vary greatly, Heaton’s writing is imaginative and sexy as hell. You can be assured, when reading a Heaton novel, that you will be entertained from start to finish. If you’re a fan of paranormal romance, Heaton is a definite must read author. While formulaic, her books are tight, well-written stories; true guilty pleasures.

Excerpt from Tamed by A Tiger

Rain hammered down outside the window of the taxi, catching the colourful lights of the city and shimmering, and making the cars parked along the road glisten. It was strange.

August couldn’t remember the last time he had seen rain.

Snow, yes.

Endless snow.

But not rain.

How long had it been since he had left the pride village high in the mountains and ventured down into the mortal world?

Years?

He leaned his right arm on the plastic that framed the bottom of the window, sighed and stared out into the night. At the rain. At the people. So many people.

The hour was late, but London was alive and buzzing.

Back home, high up in the mountains, it would be silent by now, the peace rarely broken by the sound of a roar from down in the valley as one of the big cats found prey or crossed paths with a rival.

Gods, he had always found it too quiet.

He had taken to filling the silence of the night with the song of females in his bed, their cries chasing away that dreadful quiet and bringing life and light into the darkness.

How long had it been since he had done that?

Too long.

After Cavanaugh had left the pride in his hands five months ago, he had been doing his best to run it and be a good alpha to everyone.

It was far harder than it had looked.

He closed his eyes, shutting out the busy and entrancing mortal world, and that magical rain, and huffed.

He had trade negotiations with a neighbouring pride in a little over a week and he didn’t have a fucking clue what that entailed, and asking Dalton, his second in command hadn’t helped. When he had grown the balls to ask him, Dalton had looked as lost as he felt. They were both learning this shit as they went along, making half of it up and hoping what they did was right, and what the pride expected.

Keeping his people happy, he could do, and had been doing well.

But dealing with land rights and trade of goods between prides?

He could wing the basics, but he couldn’t risk doing that with something as important as those two things. If he screwed up the impending negotiations, the pride would probably want him out, and he couldn’t allow that. He was the only heir to the position of alpha, which meant there would either be a fight between the strongest males in the pride to see who would take his place, or the pride would call upon a former alpha.

Cavanaugh.

His cousin had been raised to be an alpha, while August had been raised to play a supporting role.

Had he made a mistake by accepting Cavanaugh’s offer?

Had he been out of his mind to think he could be an alpha?

He wanted his cousin to be happy though, and the damned idiot would have stuck with tradition if he had taken back the mantle of alpha, making it impossible for him to be with his mate, and beloved, Eloise, because she was born of the lower ranks in the pride.

So August had stepped in like some fucking hero.

Who was the idiot now?

He flicked his eyes open and watched the world whizz past, listening to the background noise of the driver’s radio, the methodical clunk of the windscreen wipers and the whoosh of the tyres as they cut through the water on the road.

Still, Cavanaugh was with Eloise at last, and for better or worse, August was in charge of the pride.

It should have been grand.

Alphas were never short of female company, which was exactly the way he liked things.

Only life had a way of kicking him in the balls.

Sure, he had three prides trying to palm off females onto him, and several of the high-ranking females in his own pride making valiant attempts to bed him.

But now he didn’t have time for that shit.

Or the inclination.

Gods, he missed the old days. He would have bedded them all, maybe more than one at a time, using them to chase back that chilling silence of the night when his thoughts travelled paths he didn’t like, leaving him feeling cold inside, strangely empty.

He would have had his fill of them, used them to keep his bed warm all hours of the day and night, just like many of the pride’s alphas before him.

Hell, he had thought it would be a perk of the position, had imagined himself rolling in more females than ever, at least double the number he had used to invite into his bed.

Now, he had no lack of females who wanted him, but no desire to do anything with them.

His life had truly gone to Hell.

The stress of running the pride had him awake most nights, poring over documents and tearing his hair out as he tried to figure out what to do about the thousand issues and projects piled up on his desk, and busy every hour of the day, taking visits from members of the pride and hearing their problems.

His every moment, every breath, was dedicated to getting the pride back on their feet. It had been five months to the day since he had helped Cavanaugh defeat Stellan to free the pride of his vicious tyranny and had taken over leadership in Cavanaugh’s stead.

Five fucking months.

He hadn’t had the energy to even think about sex in that time, let alone actually do it.

And to top it all off, someone had started the rumour that he was sleeping with Dalton.

Like hell he was.

Dalton was a good male, and one hell of a looker, and always had his back, but neither of them swung that way.

The only reason August hadn’t crushed that rumour was because Dalton was seeing a female from the lowest ranks, and if their families found out, they would probably castrate him and castigate her.

No way he was going to let his best friend take the hit like that just because he was bucking tradition. August was behind him one hundred percent, would do whatever it took to help them be together, just as he had for Cavanaugh. He never had been cool with some snow leopard traditions.

Now he was caught up in them himself. As alpha, he could bed all the lowborn females he wanted, but he was expected to pick from the highborn or somehow find his fated one among the elite, the snow leopard female who had been made for him, if he ever chose to settle down.

If.

August had no intention of doing such a thing.

He sighed. Dalton would probably leap at the chance to settle down with the female he was seeing. It was obvious his friend loved her. The male pined for her when they were apart, and couldn’t keep his eyes off her when the pride were celebrating something and everyone was gathered in the square of the village.

August should have turned him down when he had offered himself as his second in command. Maybe then Dalton could have found a way to be with his female. Now, because of his elevated position, he was expected to choose a female from within his own social sphere.

He couldn’t do this without Dalton though.

His friend was indispensable, kept him sane when he was losing his mind, and pulled him up whenever he tripped and fell. He was more than a right hand man. He was vital.

So vital that August had left the pride in his capable hands while he flew halfway across the world to London.

August hated to admit it, but it felt fucking good to be away from the pride and his responsibilities there.

He hadn’t come all the way here for pleasure though. He had come on business.

The business of saving his arse.

He looked up at the redbrick warehouse to his right as the taxi pulled up outside it, at the bright neon sign that hung above thick steel doors.

Underworld.

August slipped the driver his money, grabbed his duffle bag and opened the door. He stepped out onto the wet tarmac, slammed the door and stared up at the sign as the car pulled away, leaving him alone in the night, rain pouring down on his face.

Damn, it felt good.

Cleansing.

He closed his eyes and let it wash over him, let it carry away some of his nerves.

The doors of the club opened and laughter burst around him, and he watched the two females staggering away, heading towards the main road.

He eased inside the nightclub in one fluid motion before the door closed, not touching it, and stilled in the darkness. The twenty-foot-wide corridor opened out a short distance ahead of him into a huge space. Flashing colourful lights stuttered across the black wooden bar that ran along the right black wall of the club, and the dance floor that filled the rest of the space to the left. It was still busy, close to one hundred people writhing against each other to a heavy rock beat. Halfway up the height of the building, a balcony ran around three sides of the dance floor, only absent above the bar. A few couples were making out up in the booths he could see, and more than one of the enclosed spaces had the curtain drawn across to give the occupants some privacy.

Cool air washed over him, and his nerves vanished, his head growing a little light as he breathed it in. What was in the air conditioning vents? Whatever it was, it was good.

He drifted towards the bar, suddenly feeling mellow and as if he didn’t have a care in the world. The pride? Not a problem. Trade negotiations? Whatever.

A low growl sounded ahead of him.

It rankled a little, and he instinctively flashed fangs, although he wasn’t sure where the threat was coming from.

There were a lot of different species in the club, and he smelled more than one shifter.

And also the shifter he had come to see.

“Sherry, check on the boss,” Cavanaugh’s deep voice rang through the room, cutting through the thumping music.

A pretty blonde of indiscernible breeding bounced along the bar towards him, bringing his gaze with her, and he frowned when she stopped and his eyes settled on the one who had threatened him.

A big, very pissed off looking, male with tousled short sandy hair and enough muscle packed beneath his white shirt to make it clear August wouldn’t win in a fight against him.

At least not in his human form anyway.

The male’s golden eyes glowed, his face in shadow as lights twirled above him, shifting colour.

“Kyter?” The one called Sherry touched his shoulder and he snarled at her. She snatched her hand back, looked over her shoulder, and hollered, “You deal with it. I dealt with him last time!”

Cavanaugh set a tall glass down in front of a male at the bar, heaved a sigh and turned towards him.

Froze.
