ROGUE DARKNESS (Immortal Guardians Book 12) by Dianne Duvall - FAVORITE QUOTES + giveaway

Hello! Thank you for joining us. I’m excited to be here today, celebrating the release of ROGUE DARKNESS. If you enjoy paranormal romance that features powerful immortal males who love strong women, edge-of-your-seat-action, fun banter, laugh-out-loud humor, and sizzling passion, then I think you should pick this one up. (Don’t worry if this is your first time encountering my Immortal Guardians series. If you dive in with this one, you won’t feel lost.)

To give you a taste of what you’ll find in ROGUE DARKNESS and hopefully whet your appetite for more, I thought I would share five of my favorite quotes from it. :-)
1
Nicole shook her head. “You are so weird. You think my nose is cute?”

“Yes, damn it. It’s freakishly appealing.”

Taking him by the shoulders, she turned him around and pushed him toward the door. “Go get laid, Sean.”

Laughing, he dug in his heels and faced her. “I didn’t say it turned me on.” Assuming a thoughtful expression, he tilted his head to one side, narrowed his eyes, and stroked his chin. “Although…”

2
Nicole scowled at Étienne. “Did you read my thoughts?” She seriously doubted Sean would’ve mentally described himself as hot.

“Yes,” the French telepathic immortal admitted without remorse. “But only because I heard something foul went down last night and was worried.”

Krysta nodded with exaggerated solemnity. “And because he’s nosy.”

Étienne laughed.

Nicole turned to Sean. “Okay. So I did inadvertently tell them. But I did not mentally use the word hot to describe you.”

“Yes, you did,” Étienne corrected her. “Many times.”

“Damn it,” she grumbled.

3
“I love you, Sean.”

Amber light flared to life in his eyes. “I love you, too.” His lips touched hers, the contact conveying such immense tenderness that tears welled in her eyes.

She pressed a palm to his stubbled cheek. “As more than a friend?”

Though he turned his head slightly so he could nuzzle her palm, his bright eyes held hers. “As my everything.”

4
Nicole bit her lip as a new concern arose. “I didn’t do anything I should feel embarrassed about, did I?” A vampire’s bite didn’t just leave victims loopy. It could also lower inhibitions.

“Other than ravishing me and stealing my innocence, then farting in your sleep? No.”

She laughed. “I did not!”

“Okay. You didn’t fart in your sleep.”

She grinned. “But I did steal your innocence?”

“No,” he said, injecting his response with amusing petulance. “I kept waiting for you to, but noOo. All you wanted to do was sleep.”

Again, she laughed.

5
Seth’s lips twitched as his dark eyes lit with amusement. “That was a first for me, by the way. I have never in all of my long existence had to rescue an immortal who _____.”

[ I don’t want to spoil the surprise. ;-) ]

ROGUE DARKNESS (Immortal Guardians Book 12)
by Dianne Duvall
June 13th, 2023
New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall brings readers the next stand-alone novel in her “fast-paced and humorous” (Publishers Weekly) and “utterly addictive” (RT Book Reviews) Immortal Guardians series.

Immortal Guardians have hunted and slain psychotic vampires for thousands of years. Now someone is hunting them. Humanity remains oblivious to the existence of immortals, vampires, and gifted ones, so how does this rising nemesis even know who they are and where to find them? Could it be the machinations of an old nemesis—one they thought they defeated? Or is this something new? Because unlike the foes they’ve faced in the past, this one doesn’t just target immortals. He targets those who are near and dear to them.

A gifted one under the Immortal Guardians’ protection, Nicole has worked hard to land her dream job—that of an Immortal Guardian’s Second or mortal guard—and loves working with Sean. He’s smart. He’s funny. And despite the sometimes dark existence he leads, the two of them laugh a lot. Years spent as a special ops soldier prepared Nicole well, enabling her to keep Sean safe despite his tendency to dive headlong into danger. But can it keep her safe? The enemy they face is determined and shrewd. Uncovering his identity may require new methods of engagement and force her to take a few risks.

Sean hasn’t been immortal long, but he knows the rules. And according to the rules, Nicole is off-limits. She’s his Second. His guard. His best friend. The one person who knows him better than anyone else. Though he loves every minute he spends with her, friendship is all they can ever have... isn’t it? Sean soon begins to question that as the two of them engage in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with the enemy, one that will reveal the true depth of their feelings for each other and drive him to abandon the rules altogether.

Broken Dawn (Immortal Guardians Book 10) by Dianne Duvall + giveaway

Top 5 Favorite Vampire Myths

Hello! Thank you for joining us in celebrating the release of BROKEN DAWN, an exciting new stand-alone novel in my Immortal Guardians series. If you’re new to the series, don’t worry. You will not be lost at all if you pick up this book or audiobook. Even IG fans haven’t met Nick or Kayla yet. ;-) So if you enjoy paranormal stories that feature lots of action, passion, humor, and romance, I think you’ll like BRPKEN DAWN.

Since my Immortal Guardians spend their nights hunting and slaying psychotic vampires, I thought I would share my Top 5 Favorite Vampire Myths:

1
Vampires are dead. Or undead.
Neither vampires nor immortals are dead or undead in my series. Rather, they’re infected with a very rare symbiotic virus that behaves like no other on the planet. So they breathe, they eat, they drink, and—in the case of my immortals—razz each other and fall in love.

2
Garlic harms or repels them.
My guys love food flavored with plenty of herbs and spices, so if you hold out a fistful of garlic, they’re more likely to salivate while their stomachs growl than they are to cringe away from it.

3
Sunlight harms them.
This, alas, is true for both the vampires and many of the Immortal Guardians in my series. Vampires tend to fare far worse when touched by the sun because they lack the advanced DNA Immortal Guardians possess—advanced DNA that protects them from the more corrosive aspects of the virus and allows the elders to spend more time in the sun. But even the younger immortals who must forgo sunlight don’t burst into flames when they find themselves bathed in it. Instead they pinken, blister, then worse if they don’t quickly seek shelter. :-)

4
Vampires need to drink blood to survive.
I admit this one has always grossed me out a bit. Fortunately, my Immortal Guardians and vampires don’t consume blood. They do, however, require frequent transfusions. During their transformations, the peculiar symbiotic virus that infects them causes them to grow retractable fangs they can use to siphon blood directly into their veins, whether the source is a person or a blood bag.

5
Vampires are cold and morose.
I grew up watching vampire movies. And the vampires in them more often than not bore unusually cold skin and tended to be very grim or morose. Well, not my guys. LOL. The women who have fallen in love with my Immortal Guardians can assure you that their skin is plenty warm and the men themselves—even the antisocial one *cough* Roland *cough*—enjoy laughing and teasing and loving. They can also be very passionate and don’t shy away from relationships. ;-)

Thanks again for joining us! I hope you’ll enjoy Nick and Kayla’s story!

Delve into an exciting new stand-alone novel in New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall's "fast-paced and humorous" (Publishers Weekly), "utterly addictive" (RT Book Reviews) Immortal Guardians series.

Nick Belanger can't stop thinking about the single mother who lives next door. She's smart. She's funny. She's so beautiful he can't stare at her too long for fear his eyes will start to glow. But Kayla thinks he's just an ordinary guy who works in security. Finding out he instead is a powerful immortal warrior who hunts and slays psychotic vampires for a living may not go over well, particularly since she has a daughter she doesn't want to endanger.

Kayla Dorman can keep neither her gaze nor her thoughts from straying to the man next door. Who can blame her really? He is the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome with smart, charming, and honorable thrown in. He's also a few years younger than her and surely would not be interested in a single mom who hasn't dated since her divorce. At least that's what she thinks until an accident nearly takes her life and Nick risks all to save her.

The dynamics of their relationship swiftly change. The friendship they've developed over the years deepens into love as the two spend every minute they can together, laughing and teasing, never suspecting a threat may lurk in the shadows. But that threat soon strikes, making it clear that Nick is the target and his enemy doesn't care if Kayla gets caught in the cross fire. Though Kayla bravely rises to the occasion and is determined to do whatever it takes to help Nick defeat his enemy, Nick is terrified of losing her. Can he identify and eliminate his new nemesis before the man takes everything from him?

Interview: PNR Author Dianne Duvall + giveaway

Sharon: Do you have a favorite romantic song?
Dianne: I actually have many favorites. I love music and will listen to just about any genre of music from any era. But I tend to gravitate toward oldies when it comes to romantic songs. How High the Moon, sung by Pat Suzuki is one favorite. At Last, sung by Etta James is another. I believe Ami enchanted Marcus by singing the latter in Night Reigns

Sharon
: What kind of paranormal romance hero curls your toes?
Dianne: Honestly, the kind of paranormal romance hero that curls my toes is the kind you’ll find in my novels: a powerful man who adores a strong woman. An honorable hero who will do anything to protect those he loves. I like intense action scenes in my paranormal romance, so the hero has to be able to kick butt. I enjoy the action scenes all the more when the heroine is right there kicking butt with him. The hero has to be smart and have a great sense of humor. Laughter and teasing have always been a big part of my life, so I enjoy heroes (and heroines) who can joke and tease even when circumstances are looking pretty grim. Heroes who embrace love and affection rather than shying away from it (or even running as fast as they can in the opposite direction) are my favorites, too. ;-)

Sharon: What is your favorite romance troupe to read/watch and is it the same as what you like to write?
Dianne: There are two in particular that I’ve always enjoyed: Friends-to-Lovers and Fish-Out-of-Water stories. That’s why you’ll find both in my books. Romance comes in a lot of packages. But I seem to connect more with couples who simply meet, get to know each other, become friends and fall in love than I do with couples who embark upon a more combative relationship. I like affection and teasing banter, like that which Susan and Stanislav and my other Immortal Guardians couples engage in. I’m also always curious to see how people will react to being taken out of their comfort zone or out of their element, so you’ll find that as well in my books. Susan, for example, is definitely taken out of her element in AWAKEN THE DARKNESS. Her quiet life radically changes overnight when she rescues Stanislav. But I love how she handles it.

Sharon: What is one of the most powerful romances you've read/watched? (book/movie/play)
Dianne: That’s a tough one. There have been so many that moved me, both movies and books. But the first movie that comes to mind is The Time Traveler’s Wife. It has the Friends-to-Lovers element that I love so much in romances. It has the Fish-Out-of-Water, too, along with some humor. And there is so much going against Clare and Henry. But their deep, abiding love for each other simply won’t be denied.

Awaken the Darkness (Immortal Guardians #8)

Kindle Edition, 414 pages
by Dianne Duvall
Return to the "utterly addictive" (RT Book Reviews), "fast-paced and humorous" (Publishers Weekly) world of New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardians.

He awakens encapsulated in dirt with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Riddled with injuries, he can remember neither his past nor who he is. Nor can he remember what he is. But surely no mortal man could survive being buried deep beneath the earth. All he knows with certainty is that the soothing voice and presence of the woman moving around above enables him to endure the agony of his wounds. And he will do whatever it takes to be with her.

When Susan first sees the old two-story house for sale, such warmth and longing fill her that—against all reason—she makes an offer. It will take years of hard work and money she frankly doesn’t have to fix up the place. So she can’t explain why she bought it. She also can’t explain what compels her to spend hours one night, digging in the basement until she unearths a man. A man who still lives and breathes despite having been buried alive. A man whose intense brown eyes glow amber with pain, declaring him far more than ordinary. Susan knows she should keep her distance. He has no memory and possesses gifts that would make most fear him. But as the two work together to unravel the mystery of his past, she finds herself drawn in by his teasing nature and tender touch. So much so that she loses her heart to him even as they find themselves hunted by unknown enemies who are ruthless in their quest to capture them.

Book Review: Blade Of Darkness (Immortal Guardians, #7) by Dianne Duvall

by Dianne Duvall
Sept 19, 2018
541 pages
Return to the “utterly addictive” (RT Book Reviews) world of New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians.

Dana Pembroke has been able to glimpse the future of those she touches for as long as she can remember. But she never saw Aidan coming. When the tall, dark Celt with the charming grin yet world-weary eyes walks through her door, the future she sees for him is one full of violence, danger, deception… and passion. Because amidst the terrifying battles that unfold in her visions, she also sees herself in Aidan’s arms and in his bed. Dana knows she should keep her distance, but the tender moments and laughter they share entice her even as she finds herself thrust into a world of vampires, immortals, and other preternatural beings.

Immortal Guardian Aidan O’Byrne has been hunting and slaying psychotic vampires for nearly three thousand years, so visions of bloody battles don’t trouble him. The battles Dana foresees, however, show Aidan’s brethren turning against him, so he can’t help but feel alarmed. While he spends as much time as he can with Dana, struggling to decipher her dire predictions, Aidan finds himself utterly smitten. Hope rises that he has finally found a woman who can banish the darkness and loneliness that plague him. But when vampires begin targeting Dana and a powerful enemy spawns chaos, will fate grant them time to find happiness together?

The setup for Dianne Duval’s Blade of Darkness is something out of a macabre play but instead of a tragic story, it’s one of survival, romance, and surprisingly it had a fair dose of humor in it too. It was also my first time reading a book by Duval!

Immortal Guardian Aiden O’Byrne has been fighting psychotic vampires for around three thousand years and is prepared to handle almost anything except some of the things Dana Pembroke sees in her visions. Dana sees Aidan’s brethren turning on him, she sees a lot of blood and chaos. She also sees herself with Aidan which startles her but the more she gets to know him, the more she wants to stop fighting her visions. Aiden, on the other hand, is just fine with the idea of him and Dana together, he’s been alone for so long and he can tell Dana is special.

Blade of Darkness had such a special character in Aiden. I know, I haven’t read the series other than this book but I really liked this guy. He was charming, world-weary, kind, and unbelievably funny. Most immortals have this uber serious, kind of dull personalities but Aiden had this quick sense of humor that was infectious and irresistible. I felt like I was missing some kind of inside joke about Aiden and his want of a mate though until it was kind of explained. Now I just have to go back and read the series from the beginning. Dana was delightful too. She was tough, smart, snarky, and easy to like. Even with her visions, she was just so unprepared to be thrown into the middle of a dangerous situation but she handled herself like a pro. I liked her ability to quickly adjust to her surroundings and be useful. That’s an important trait to me in a heroine.

However, what I really appreciated was Duvall’s way of telling a paranormal romance. She doesn’t waste time overexplaining or creating “empty” scenes that serve no purpose. The book starts off at a fast pace and doesn’t let up until the very end. I love that kind of pace, it gives the reader a chance to feel that blood pumping excitement (Or dread) and to me makes the experience even more enjoyable.

All in all Blade of Darkness was a great read and it won’t be my last time reading this author.

Interview: Dianne Duvall (A Sorceress of His Own book tour) + giveaway

Hello Dianne! This is your first time visiting I Smell Sheep... *shoves moonpie and Kool-Aid into Dianne’s hands* Go ahead, drink it *cue evil laugh* everyone drinks it…eventually.
Dianne: Thanks! I would’ve swung by much sooner if I’d known you’d give me goodies.

Sharon: You say on your website that A Sorceress of His Own was the inspiration for your Immortal Guardians series. Why have you waited so long to publish this story?
Dianne: When I began my writing career, I wanted to go the traditional publishing route. Publishers were leery of historical romances that contained paranormal elements when I started shopping A Sorceress of His Own. I loved the story, though, and didn’t want to compromise it by removing that element, so I decided with much reluctance to set it aside for the time being. But the characters and ideas in it wouldn’t leave me and led me to begin my Immortal Guardians series. I’ve been writing that one nonstop ever since I signed my first contract. However, so many readers have contacted me, wanting to know when A Sorceress of His Own would be released, that I very happily returned to it and decided to take the step of self-publishing it. And I’m so glad that I did.
Sharon: What a cool “gift” to be able to give to your fans!
DianneBa-dum-bum. :) The fans have been so very supportive. I appreciate them so much and love chatting with them online. I can’t wait to hear what they think of the new series!

Sharon: Tell us about a “first” for you… (First movie, first rejection, first time you ate…., you get the idea <G>)
DianneHow about a first review? I recently saw another author mention release week being both exciting and nerve-wracking because she always manages to convince herself that readers are going to hate the book. Well, that’s pretty much how it goes for me, too. When I finish a manuscript, I love it and feel very excited, believing readers will enjoy it. Then I send ARCs out to reviewers, the waiting begins, and—the closer the release date gets—the more I begin to worry that readers won’t like it. So, as you may imagine, waiting for those first reviews to begin to trickle in can be difficult. It was even worse with my first book. This was it. My big chance. My first foray into the publishing industry. And I had no idea what to expect from reviewers.
Then my first ever review appeared in RT Book Reviews, a magazine I had always held in high esteem. I bought a copy from Barnes and Noble. (Okay, I admit it. I bought three.) Then, heart pounding, I raced out to my car, ducked inside, flipped frantically through the magazine until I found the review . . . and wow, you can’t imagine the excitement that filled me when I saw those four and a half stars. It was a dream come true. I’m pretty sure I smiled all night. And, the funny thing is, I still feel that same rush of excitement and happiness every time I read a new review and see that a reader has enjoyed one of my books. It truly is an amazing feeling.

Sharon: I don’t think I could take the suspense of waiting for reviews…do you have a special tradition or ritual you do while waiting for that first review for a new book?

DianneI do tend to eat a lot of junk food I shouldn’t whenever my nerves start jangling. :)

Sharon: What is the nerdiest/coolest thing you own
DianneA Theremin. If you don’t know what that is, it’s the coolest, craziest musical instrument I’ve ever encountered. It doesn’t look like much, just a box with two metal poles that look like antennae. But when you plug it in, turn it on, and wave your hands around in front of it, you get those deliciously corny sounds that provided the soundtrack of the old black and white science fiction movies from the 50s.
Sharon: Lol! Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory has one. That is the only reason I know what they are. So, can you play the Star Trek theme?
DianneLOL! No. I’ll have to try it, though, now that you’ve got me thinking about it.

Sharon: You have one of your favorite poems you wrote on your website, The Guardian. What inspired it?

The Guardian

Though time has passed, tonight I stand
at your grave, my grief an open wound
that begs for the healing touch of your hand
and absorbs the soothing light of the moon.
My toes sink into soft black earth,
give birth to roots that twist and turn
in graceful arcs as they venture forth
to embrace you. My veins burn
as water replaces blood. I close my eyes,
feel my fingers form leaves, my arms breed branches
that reach toward the heavens. I realize
my prayers have finally been granted.
Above you I stand guard: your lover, your shelter,
at peace. Once more, we are together.

DianneI took a poetry writing course in college, which incidentally helped me find my voice as a writer more than any other creative writing course I took. For this particular assignment, my professor wanted us each to write a “Shakespearean” sonnet with a modern rhyme scheme. It had to be fourteen lines and have a specific structure. But the subject of the poem was ours to choose. I’m not sure what first sparked the idea when I sat down to write it, but I found myself imagining a man who was so consumed by grief for his lover who had recently died that he transformed into a tree that would forever shelter her grave. Once that image struck, the poem came easily to me.

Sharon: Bam! Right in the Gothic feels with that one.
DianneI think I just naturally gravitate in that direction.  :)There seems to be a Gothic, paranormal, or fantasy element to just about everything I write.

Sharon: What goes on while working on a movie set that most of us wouldn’t know about?

DianneA lot of waiting. LOL. Scenes are usually shot from multiple angles. And every time the camera position is changed, all of the lights, tracking, etc. has to be changed, too, which can take quite a bit of time. I’ve edited more than one manuscript on the set of a movie while waiting for the crew to finish adjusting the lights or for the director and DP to finish blocking the shot with the actors. But something unexpected always seems to arise. Practical jokes to alleviate the boredom. Fire alarms going off when the special effects coordinator *cough* me *cough* gets a little too exuberant with the fog machines. I even edited Night Reigns, Immortal Guardians Book 2, on the set of a movie filmed in a building that was reputedly haunted. A lot of late nights spent in a haunted building . . . The waiting on that set ended up including things going bump in the night and curious employees who worked there sharing personal accounts of ghostly encounters. :)

Sharon: Will you share with us the movie you were machete-wielding maniac in?

DianneFor now, at least, that one will have to remain a secret. The filmmaker is currently in discussions with a distributor, so he doesn’t want us to leak the title. But it’s a horror film. Not so much a slasher film. More suspenseful, like the horror films in the sixties.
Sharon: But once it does come out you have to let us know!
DianneWill do. I’ll even see if I can provide you with a video clip.

Sharon: Thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us.

DianneIt was a pleasure, Sharon. Thank you for welcoming me into your world . . . and for plying me with moonpies and Kool-Aid. ;-)
Sharon: We don’t have any ghosts around here, but we do have a dragon. *opens dungeon door* Follow me…
DianneOoooh. Let me just get my Theremin first . . .

A SORCERESS OF HIS OWN
The Gifted Ones Book 1
by Dianne Duvall
June 2nd 2015
From the New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Immortal Guardians series comes an enchanting new series full of romance, danger, and loyalty: The Gifted Ones

Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear, but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence. Perhaps because she garners the same fear in others that he does himself.

For seven years, Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon’s side, counseling him from the shadows, healing him with her hands, and staving off the worst of his loneliness while his fearsome reputation keeps others at bay. Blessed—or cursed—with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him beneath umbral robes that lead Dillon and his people to believe she is the same aged wisewoman who served his father.

All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon’s life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything—even the wrath of his king—to be with her.
