October, Present Time

Mathilda Ethel Davenport! Come on, girl. Tilly chided herself in the chilly, autumn night as she cradled her pregnant belly under the stark streetlights behind the Montreal Bell Center. It’s his child. He’s the only one who can keep you safe.

She rallied the courage she needed to dive into the horde of Cass St-Amand’s adoring fans waiting outside to catch a peek at their favorite rock star after his show.

The midnight air was crisp around her, the wind picking up a few dead maple leaves littering the concrete sidewalk. Yet the fall breeze did little to dilute the mixed scent of cheap perfume and body odor emanating from the boisterous mob awaiting their idol to exit the concert venue.

Standing amidst the downtown glass skyscrapers and centuries-old stone buildings, most of Cass’s superfans were not yet twenty-five, sporting jeans, leather jackets, or bodycon dresses under tiny coats.

Tilly winced and rubbed her belly once more. Her little munchkin was his baby alright. Conceived in the middle of a frigid winter, exactly thirty-six weeks ago today.

Would he believe it was his? Vampires, even immortal ones, did not father children.

Except that Cass had chosen to spend those few fateful nights not with just any woman, but a supernatural one—Tilly was a banshee.

One who walked with Death. Everything was possible.

She bit the inside of her mouth at the task ahead of her.

He had no idea she was pregnant with his child. How would he react?

He would have to acknowledge he was the father. But she’d cross that bridge when she’d get there. For now, she just had to reach him.

Book 1

FIRST MEET (HIS POV)
“Hey, it’s her!” Mag elbowed him as the pub’s door opened, letting some fresh air in.

“Who?” Val frowned as he continued to scan the room, casting a brief nod at the waitress bringing them their drinks.

“The girl from the shop,” Mag explained with eagerness.

Val reluctantly looked to see what made his brother so enthusiastic. The young witch from the craft store stood there, a small figure in an anime logoed t-shirt, plain jeans, and faded sneakers. Her poker-straight black hair fanned against her cheek and down to her chest.

A little geeky, but yes, there was something about her. He felt a kinship in her awkwardness. She, too, didn’t seem to want to be there.

She perused the crowd, waved at a few people, before settling her eyes on him.

His breath remained caught in his throat as her gaze of the deepest jade connected with his own. The contact disturbed something in him that had been dormant for centuries.

Seigneur!

The strange force stirring within him had gone straight to his core. His heartbeat pounded madly as a flush of warmth spread down to his groin.

Oh damn. Val instinctively searched for Sasha, who was vigorously lapping water from his bowl at his feet. He couldn’t remember ever feeling anything so intense before. He shook himself as he sunk his fingers into the fur of his loyal companion. This could mean trouble.

“I wonder if I should hit on her,” Mag was saying.

Val moved his head bleakly as she broke their connection to survey the bar with her head held high before waving with animation at a group of women at the back.

“Sure, why not.” He let out a slow exhale, his pulse now steadier, and leaned further back in his chair. He forced himself to look away from her and continue to study the patrons. But he couldn’t shake the feeling that this young witch was something else.

And with his entire being, he strongly prayed that Mag would leave this one girl alone.

FRIENDS TO LOVERS (Her POV)
“Justin.” Suddenly swallowed whole by her emotions, she bit her bottom lip. “What would have happened to us if you had asked me to dance that night?”

“Instead of Valerian?”

“Yes,” she rasped, her voice tainted with mixed feelings.

“I don’t know.” His gaze remained impenetrable.

She knew they bonded but she couldn’t read him. A rush of complex impressions invaded her heart. Had she wished for him to declare some undeniable love for her?

He hadn’t.

And right there, for some crazy reason— stranded in this house, with a possible assassin after her—she wanted him to say that he had feelings for her.

Wanted him to fall in love with her.

She found herself with no choice. She would have to make it happen. She knew she had to focus on her redemption, but this—Justin and her— it had to be. In fact, it already was.

She just had to show him.

UF Author Marie-Claude Bourque Interviews Necromancer Malcolm Dunsmuir + giveaway

Marie-Claude's Interview with Necromancer Malcolm Dunsmuir

M-C:
So Malcolm, how is it going with that kid you chained in the basement now that you met his sister.

Sitting in an old faded seat in the condemned cinema he calls home, I narrow my eyes at him, wondering if I went too far with my question.

He shrugs under his full-length dark overcoat, his long hair brushes his shoulders as he jumps from the edge of the stage to walk over and sit by my side.

Malcolm: I cannae say yet. She won’t just go away and leave the monster be. He’s a vampire now, she should know better.

M-C: But he’s her little brother. Doesn’t that count for anything?
Malcolm: Nah, that’s not her brother anymore. It’s a blood-sucker little bastard that needs to be put down soon.

M-C: So why didn’t you? Right away, like the other warlocks expected you to do?
Malcolm: I want to know who made him. He just didn’t appear out of nowhere. There were a whole bunch of them when they attacked Baby Elsa. Someone had created them.

M-C: Yes I see. So you took Harper to see him.
Malcolm: Aye, I did. She needed to see by herself.

M-C: Wasn’t she scared?
Malcolm:
He shakes his head and his expression darkened.
That’s the thing. I was hoping she would be. But no, she wasn’t. The lassie had no fear.

M-C: Wow.
Malcolm: Yeah. She’s like this little Miss Sunshine. Everything is just peach and cream and "Oh Mal, I’ll just use these essential oils and this prayer book I got from an old witch and Evan will be back to normal." Doesn’t she get it? He’s a freakin’ vampire.

M-C: So her spell won’t work.
Malcolm: I don’t know. It shouldn’t. Everything I know from this world and the underworld says it won’t.

M-C: But you told her you would help.
Malcolm: Aye, he shakes his head at me, I’m insane.

M-C: Maybe you like her.
Malcolm:
He shoots me the darkest look then lets out a pained sigh.
She’s nothing like any woman I’ve ever been around.

M-C: Really?
Malcolm: She’s this cute girl from a small sea-town back east who lives in her own dream world. Hells, she’s even out of place walking down the street in Seattle.

M-C: Not your type, uh?
Malcolm: Hey, I don’t have a type. But I don’t need trouble.

M-C: Is it because you’re half-demon?
Malcolm: How do you know that?

M-C: I did create you.
Malcolm: Well, I’d rather not talk about that.

M-C: Your parents you mean?
Malcolm: My birth parents, my power, all that bloody mess you put me in.

He stands and I'm struck by how tall he is. With his wide shoulders, long coat, and motorcycle books, his presence dominates the entire derelict cinema auditorium. He casts his gaze on me and I shudder, wondering how he will fare with all this.

M-C: Sorry.
Malcolm: Don’t be.
He shrugs then slowly rakes his hair back, a deep frown etched on his forehead.
I better get back to her. Maybe you’re right. Maybe I do like the lass.

M-C: I think you do.
Malcolm: Right.
He gives me one last grim look.
So what the hell am I supposed to do now?

EXCERPT:
A creature. Val tightened his fist.

She hadn’t said the word, he had. But he knew that was what witches and warlocks thought of him and his brothers.

And while he couldn’t care less about the opinion of others, he was expecting more from her. But no, she was only here to study him.

As he grimly stood in the Sanctuaire’s chapel, he watched her pour over a giant paper map of the city. She had stretched it over the altar, bordered it with five black candles and speckled the surface with anvil dust mixed with bone powder. A handful of railroad spikes and the hypodermic needle that had pricked Emmeline lay at the center.

His mind was on the witch instead of whoever had been after his blood.

He just couldn’t let it go. A future high priestess. Sounded like Marianne Thibodeau had forgotten to mention a few things about her granddaughter.

It shouldn’t matter. Really. Already her essence was fading from his veins. The gentle touch a waning memory.

Yet here she stood above the map. Her jet-black hair tied into a loose braid fell over one shoulder, the thick strand ending just at the tip of her breast. The small and high curve was much too defined under the small black t-shirt. The fabric of her top thin enough that he could make the outline of a small push-up bra.

Stop it, diable! Focus on the job. His balled fists and pained breath didn’t go unnoticed.

“You need to feed, Valerian.” Father Grégoire was right beside him, a heavy hand on his shoulder while his eyes went from Val to Maisie. The priest knew exactly how the immortal felt, the woman drawing both a surge of lust and hunger deep within him. His insides twisting and growling.

Val lifted a defiant chin at his friend. “We have time.”
