Evil roams the streets of New Orleans...
Surrounded by the romance and mystery of the French Quarter, psychics Trudy Tucker and Levi Wolfe search for a taker of lives. Combining their unique skills, they zero in on a serial killer who has been murdering for more than a decade. Their suspect is in a wheelchair, partially paralyzed in an accident a few years ago, but the latest victim was murdered after his paralysis. Are they on the wrong track or has the murderer found a protégé to continue his reign of horrors?

Trudy Tucker has the unique ability to view events in real time as experienced by others. She can jump into the mind’s eye of another and experience what they experience, for better or for worse. And, in Trudy’s case, it’s typically for the worse. Trudy reluctantly jumps into the minds of killers. But instead of justifiably cowering in a corner, overwhelmed by the atrocity of it all, Trudy uses her abilities to track and trap the most villainous in society. Trudy is assisted by her fiancée and partner Levi Wolfe, an esteemed psychic and businessman. Wolfe is smart, sexy, virile, rich; the whole package and an absolute pleasure to read. The pair’s latest case takes them to New Orleans in search of a serial killer. I’ve never been to New Orleans, but now, thanks to Camp, I feel I have.

Through Her Eyes is a intelligent, sexy thriller. Trudy and Levi are well-developed characters who, while in possession of extraordinary abilities, struggle with the same insecurities and day to day struggles as us ordinary people. Camp is a well-researched master of description, a quality I personally enjoy and respect in an author. My only criticism would be that while Camp works hard to give her story contemporary flair, there are occasional dated phrases and references used throughout. But this is minor. Like, almost not worth mentioning minor.

While crucial, the paranormal aspects of the book are rooted in realism. Camp avoids overly fantastic explanations in favour of the more plausible. Camp works diligently to establish her plot, characters, and relationships lending to a rich reading experience.

Intrigued by the book’s synopsis, I signed on for the review not realizing it was a book four in a series. As an abject completionist, I almost always read series from start to finish. But, a commitment is a commitment and, ultimately, I was thrilled to have found a new series. Through Her Eyes was an excellent read from start to finish and while I would’ve preferred to start at the beginning of the series, the read felt complete and fulfilling without having read previous installments. I feel after reading only one book that I’m intimately acquainted with the world of Tucker and Wolfe.

I look forward to subsequent installments of Mind’s Eye. I will definitely investigate this author and earlier books in this series.

Excerpt:

“So, tell me about your experience,” Trudy said, sitting next to Levi.
“It was strange. Very strange. I was contacted – during a business meeting, mind you – by the dead son of the new contractor I was speaking with in my office. This kid – a salvage yard murder victim – popped into my head and started yelling at me. I tried to shut him out, but I couldn’t. I had to actually stop the damned meeting and tell the man that his deceased son was demanding an audience. Gonzo thought I’d lost my noodle.”
“Good Lord!” She covered her parted lips with her hand. “I’d say that was a heck of a coincidence, but . . .it seems to be so much more than that.”
“Yeah, right.” He sat back and drummed his fingers on the table for a few seconds. “Anyway, the kid – Clayton Nelson – was hitchhiking in New Orleans when a guy in a pickup stopped for him. He couldn’t see much of the man’s face because he wore a ball cap and sunglasses. He had a mustache that looked fake to me. He used the ploy of something being wrong with his truck to get the kid to look under the hood and then he knocked him out with a blow to the head. Clay came to in a basement, his wrists and ankles bound with plastic ties and chains.” He shuttered his gaze from her. “That’s where he was murdered.” A few seconds ticked by before his lashes lifted to reveal his dark blue eyes that never missed much. “You’ve been in contact with the murderer already, haven’t you?”
Her heart jolted. He was uncanny. “I was in contact with someone who’s warped. I don’t know if it was the salvage yard killer.”
“Was he murdering someone?”
“Something. A cat.”
Levi’s upper lip lifted in disgust. “Jesus.”
“Yeah. He was practicing, I think.” She shuddered and blocked out the memory.
“The kid in my head showed me a compass and pointed to the N on it.”
She gasped at the reference. “Your true north?”
“Bingo. His way of telling me that you were already part of this.”
She reached for her glass of juice. They must be destined to examine this case. How else could she explain what happened to Levi and what she’d already experienced?

Ewe Won’t Believe This, But... Guest post: Deborah Camp (Through His Heart book tour) + giveaway

Author Confessional…..
Ewe Won’t Believe This, But... by Deborah Camp

Since my Mind’s Eye series deals with psychics and spirits, I’m often asked if I really believe in ghosts. I can tell you, in no uncertain terms, that I do. Mainly because of what I’ve experienced at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, AR.

During that particular weekend, my friends and I heard about a room that the hotel wasn’t renting out because everyone who had stayed in that room awakened to find that the doorknob had been removed from the inside. The hotel staff would come to the rescue and open the door for them and replace the doorknob, which was often found by housekeeping under the bed or in the closet. We speculated that guests were pulling a prank to bolster all the ghost stories surrounding the hotel. However, we decided to find the room in question.

After midnight we went to the designated floor and crept down the hall. The room was at the far end of it. Halfway down the corridor, all the lights went out. It wasn’t pitch-black. We could make out each other in the dim light cast from the moonlight streaming through the window. Giggling, we were making “ooooh-aahhhh” noises to each other when we realized it was getting very, very cold! So cold that we could see our breath fogging the air. I remember shivering and wondering, What the heck?!

My girlfriends and I stared at each other, round-eyed and quivering, as realization dawned. Was there a spirit near us? I could hear my pulse booming in my ears and I hugged myself to ward off the chills and sudden fear.

Then, with a soft pop, the lights all came back on and the area instantly began warming up. Within a minute, it was all back to normal.

Except we weren’t.

Like the chicken we were, we ran from that hallway and couldn’t wait to get into our room a floor below. We sat up most of the night jabbering about our experience and asking ourselves over and over again, “Did that just happen?”

That’s just one odd experience I’ve had in Eureka Springs. Don’t even get me started about the café table that rose up and floated!

Excerpt:
“You don’t realize how special you are, do you?”

Trudy smiled. “Special to you.”

“Yes, and special as a psychic.” Levi straightened, stood, and threw his leg over the seat, sitting backwards in it to face her. Wrapping an arm around her waist, he hauled her up against the back of the chair. “What I do isn’t anything special. Talking to the deceased is a psychic staple. But what you can do . . . connecting with the thoughts of a living being . . . that is rare. In fact, I don’t know of anyone else who can actually do it. I know a couple of people who claim to be able to, but you’re the only psychic I’ve ever met who is the genuine article.”

She listened, but found holes in his argument. “What you do is special. You told me yourself that your accuracy sets you apart from other mediums.”

“Yes, that’s right. I’m good. Damn good.” He winked at her. “But you’re a diamond among crystals. You sparkle so brightly, you blind the rest of us.”

Her heart melted into a puddle as he gazed at her with undisguised admiration. “I’m not . . . am I? You really don’t know anyone who can do what I do?”

He shook his head slowly, deliberately, his blue eyes shining. “Nary a one.” He regarded her for a few moments before his lips twitched into a grin. “Does that freak you out?”

“A little.” She swallowed the lump in her throat so that her voice would emerge stronger. “Quintara has told me that I’m one of a kind, but I figured she was exaggerating – as she’s known to do.”

“This time your flamboyant mentor wasn’t embellishing the truth.” He rested his hands on her hips, his long fingers spreading across her jeaned backside. “At the risk of freaking you out more, I think you’ve only begun to reveal the extent of what you can do. You’re holding back because you’re afraid. I understand. I’ve been there.” His fingers flexed on her hips. “Take your time. Let it come to you gradually and don’t be scared. You’re strong and brave. You’ll be able to handle it.”

“Handle what?” She shook her head as a ball of nerves grew in her stomach.

“Your gift. Your incredible gift.”

“You said you’d help me.”

“And I will. I’m here for you.”

She framed his achingly handsome face in her hands and her heart doubled in size. “How’d I get so lucky?”

“I’m the lucky one.” He turned his face so that he could kiss her palm, but not before she saw darkness pass through his eyes like a specter. “And you’ll agree with me whole-heartedly once we’re in Missouri.”
