PNR Author L. Diane Wolfe: WIP it Real Good - In Darkness Series

In Darkness: The Shark is my latest release and the second in the In Darkness novella series. The first was The Vampire (released this past February) and next up is The Werewolf (September 5).

I’d like to share a snippet from The Werewolf, set in England mid-1980s.

Salisbury Cathedral opened moments after their arrival. Nicholas stared up at the imposing tower, hesitant to enter. Would he experience acceptance this time? A tug on his sleeve caught his attention.

“Come on,” Vicki said, pulling him toward the entrance.

He approached the doors, a healthy fear of God tingling his nerves. Why did I suggest this? Father, forgive me. Please forgive the beast inside.

They entered the building and Vicki gasped. Nicholas held his breath, afraid to look. His movement gradual, he lifted his gaze. The massive cathedral opened before them, powerful and splendid in all her ancient glory. The presence of God thundered in the high ceiling, the sound rushing to meet the floor below. He shuddered at the sensation.

“Are you all right?” Vicki said.

Her fingers curled around his and her touch brought a measure of calm. “I’m fine.”

Straightening his back, Nicholas took a brave step forward. With Vicki’s hand wrapped around his, a surge of strength flowed through him. I can do this.

No longer consumed by dread, he let Vicki lead.

She paused for a photo. He hated to relinquish her hand and did so with reluctance. Waiting next to a pew, he glanced at the ceiling. A breeze moved down the corridor, stirring his hair. Rather than a chill, a warm breath touched his skin. The sensation set him at ease.

This is their second date. Nicholas is understandably nervous about entering the cathedral and it reveals his attitude toward his condition: he considers it an evil curse. While it isn’t a curse, it does present a struggle for him. Both main characters have a “condition” that causes them to withdraw from other people (shrouded in darkness), and the story reveals that through each other, they find acceptance.

You don’t have to wait until September to read about characters shrouded in darkness, though! The Shark and The Vampire are both available now.

A Vampire's Kiss by author Rebecca Zanetti is the latest novella in the 1001 Dark Knights saga. At 136 pages, you get a nice like sampler taste of this authors work, her writing ability and a PNR series that is both hot and action packed. Plus, you can read this all in an afternoon.

Rebecca Zanetti is one of the first PNR authors that I read after getting hooked on the Twilight books. Yes, you can judge me if you want but I loved those books. Moving on, as I mentioned there was a big hole left in my undead heart after all that reading and so by chance this author was the next I picked up. She has yet to let me down. And honestly, her writing in the adult world of PNR hooked me on everything else.

A Vampire's Kiss continues a solid world that's been built and I enjoyed it from start to finish. There is no lacking of heat or drama in these books and you really do want to know more after it ends. This one is worth it for fans of the author and new readers alike. You will NOT be disappointed.

A grandmother tells her granddaughter a true story about Christmas Eve in Upstate New York in 1986. Some people in a diner and a convenience store next to it are stuck in a blizzard. With the blizzard came something else: an alien invasion.

I like to find Christmas books to read for the month of December, other than the story of Scrooge and the three ghosts that visit him or a sappy love story. When I saw this novella released, it reminded me of War of the Worlds by HG Wells and of course, two 80s alien invasion movies, Attack of the Killer Klowns and The Thing (John Carpenter’s version, as it was close to the story, Who Goes There? by John Campbell-redone as a novella, Frozen Hell.) Anyway, this novella mixes something like The Thing with Christmas. I enjoyed it. 

If you want to read something Christmassy, that is not about Scrooge or the baby Jesus, or people falling in love, and if scary ghost stories and/or alien stories are your thing, this might be the read you want.

Bond of Passion by Larissa Ione is the latest novella in Larissa's very entertaining Demonica saga. I've enjoyed every single edition to this world and this one is certainly just adding to the overall love for the world she created.

So vividly written, with such planned out care and thoughtfulness. The variety of characters each feel real, they have life that's lived on these pages and stories that each one touch you in some way. Or damn if you don't wish they would touch you in some kind of way! Freaking MEOW these alpha men and women are so hot!

Romance is done right in this series. This key ingredient just adds to the overall warmth of the book and I loved it.

Tavin glanced over at the buffet table, where two of the hospital’s cafeteria workers were volunteering. Evi, a curvy brunette lion shifter in a scarlet bikini, gave him a sultry smile and a flirty wave. Next to her, Churla, a fangy, pointy-eared succubus who looked too much like a Neethul for comfort, flicked her forked tongue at him in a way that made it clear what she wanted to use it for.

He nodded in acknowledgment but didn’t offer any encouragement. He’d hooked up with Evi a couple of times, but he wasn’t in the mood right now. As for Churla? Yeah, no. Her platinum hair and pale, iridescent skin reminded him of someone he didn’t deserve to think about.

Tavin turned back to his friend. “It still freaks me out to see Tier-Five demons working at UG.”

“That’s kind of the assassin calling the executioner a killer, isn’t it?” At Tavin’s reluctant shrug, Lore continued. “Why are you working there, anyway? You used to kill people for a living.”

“So did you,” Tavin pointed out. “But now you’re working in the same hospital I am.”

“Yeah, but I work in the morgue. The people I have to deal with are mostly dead.”

Tavin grinned. “Only mostly dead? Not all the way dead?”

“What?”

“The Princess Bride?” Tavin prompted. “It’s a reference. Your dead people are only mostly dead?” When Lore stared at him as if he’d lost his mind, he shook his head. “The movie is a classic, man. Watch it sometime.”

“You sound like Wraith,” Lore said flatly. “Always talking about movies. And you didn’t answer the question. After the Horsemen destroyed the slave and assassin bonds, you were free. You could have done anything. Why did you decide to save lives?”

Tavin watched a hellhound block one of the kids from going into the water. When he tried to run around the hound, the big beast picked up the boy by the seat of his swim trunks and plopped him down near a group of adults. Damn. They were great babysitters.

When Tavin looked back at Lore, he saw the guy was waiting for an answer. “I decided to save lives because I have red in my ledger.”

“For real? You keep a ledger?”

“Dude, seriously? The Avengers? Black Widow? Watch a movie someday.”

“I have a kid. I don’t have time for movies that aren’t animated.”

I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I just want to read a really good novella. Something quick and fun, hard hitting and gets my romance bone tingling all at the same time. I love The Graveside Bar for just those reasons. It's a hard-hitting fast and fun read, pure entertainment that you can enjoy anytime.

If you like this novella that's awesome because you can read even more works from this author. But, I am pretty sure you will like it and want to dig your fangs in deeper. Sexy warriors fill the pages o this adventure with a mix of "who done it" and some action chills that kept me going to the very end. I liked it a lot and look forward to the next novella in this saga!

“What are you doing?” a smooth, deep voice asked from behind her.

Sia spun around, fear and guilt seizing her lungs, though she couldn’t fathom what she had to feel guilty about. She clutched her phone to her chest, her gaze darting about. Because that surely was a great look on her. “Nothing,” she said after a moment. “What are you doing?”

Donovan’s dark lashes lowered over irises shimmering softly in the streetlamp’s light as he studied her. He tilted his head to one side, causing a lock of dark hair to fall over his brow. “Is everything okay, Doc?”

Forcing a smile at that point in her life was like peeling taffy that had melted and then cooled again off her car dashboard, but she finally managed to do it. “Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?” She tried to cross her arms over her chest and lean against a stack of crates. She failed and almost landed face-first on the pavement.

He rushed forward, but she caught herself and smoothed a hand over her hair. “How’s Elwyn?” she asked, deflecting. Her cheeks burned, and she thanked the powers for low light. Blushing was another human trait she despised.

After a long moment, Donovan lifted a shoulder. “You’d know better than me, you being her medic and all.”

Medic. Wasn’t that a military term? Had he served? Donovan had been the first member of the group she’d met when she walked up to the main house of the Loehr’s compound, the one constructed to keep Charley’s daughter safe. Knowing that Charley wasn’t around to contest her proclamation, Sia had pretended to be a friend of Charley’s from school. She’d told them that Charley had asked her to keep an eye on Elwyn and offered her services. A man named Garrett Swopes, another of Elwyn’s guardians, had hired her on the spot as Donovan watched their interaction.

Coincidentally, Donovan was also the first of the ragtag team she’d treated when he laid down his bike to avoid getting beheaded by a truck that had pulled out in front of him. And yet, even after all these years, she still knew so little about him.

Her phone pinged, and she read the text from Benji. Run, Sia. And believe nothing.

A churning wall of water speeds toward us, many times higher than any waves I’ve seen before. Knees shaking, I grip my daughter and infant and back away.

Angelica grips her talisman and challenges the approaching waves. “Por favor, deténganse, Espíritus! Los adoraremos mejor!”

The tower shudders and shakes. Spray slaps up the windows, like the water’s trying to pull us down.

The window in front of Angelica cracks, jagged lines marching across its surface. It shatters inward. Shards of glass fly into the room, along with howling wind and spray strong enough to knock everyone off their feet—even Thal. Lengths of grass tear away from my woven vest and skirt.

Angelica screams, a high-pitched shriek that sounds like an animal being ripped apart.

Ted Weber has pursued writing since childhood, and learned filmmaking and screenwriting in college, along with physics and ecology. His first published novel was a near-future cyberpunk thriller titled Sleep State Interrupt (See Sharp Press). The first book of a trilogy, it was a finalist for the 2017 Compton Crook award for best first speculative fiction novel. The sequels, The Wrath of Leviathan and Zero-Day Rising, are also out. These were followed by Born in Salt, a character-oriented alternate history novel that pits an Illinois farm boy against a ruthless fascist government. His latest work, The Survivors (Solstice Publishing), is a post-apocalyptic horror novella in which a young mother is forced on the road and struggles to survive a living nightmare.

Mr. Weber is a member of Poets & Writers and the Maryland Writers Association, and has run numerous writing workshops. By day, Mr. Weber works as an ecologist, and has had a number of scientific papers and book chapters published. He lives in Annapolis, Maryland with his wife Karen. He enjoys traveling and has visited all seven continents.

Sadly, this story is JUST a novella. That means, you only get about 200 pages. That. Is. It. Which, should be a crime against humanity. So hang on every word because Gena comes to slay another one! At some point, it just becomes unfair how awesome these characters are and sadly how I will never get to meet them.

What a fun ride and all the emotion, snark, and adventure you could ask for. I loved Viola even more than expected, she's fun and wicked all wrapped up in the best bow. Sexy as hell men are the jam here and you get every bit of alpha male, plus some extra to take home.

There's not much more I can say, read the damn book! You'll love and want to read more from this author.

No, he couldn’t be. The rogue had also delivered cleaning supplies and clothing: T-shirts and sweatpants she’d rather die than wear, as well as a French maid costume. The cruel beast obviously taunted her.

She was right the first time. Definitely hate him.

When next she caught sight of him, she would tell him. During every delivery, he had somehow remained hidden, as if he’d known when she slumbered, the coast clear. Even though she didn’t have a set schedule or know when she would succumb to the need for rest. Did he ever ponder their kiss? Or crave more of her?

A fresh tide of anger frothed. He’d gifted her with the best kiss of her life, the truth of his adoration drowning out the demon’s lies. Then he had rejected her. Abandoned her.
