Author Jeffe Kennedy: ZYNDA’S GUIDE TO MAGIC AND SHAPESHIFTING (The Shift of the Tide book tour)

ZYNDA’S GUIDE TO MAGIC AND SHAPESHIFTING

Or

Four Do’s and Don’ts for Mossbacks

1. Do feel free to ask if I can take a particular form. If I’m in the mood, I might show you.

Don’t ask how many forms I can take. I’ll always give you the same answer: several.

2. Do have lots of food on hand for me. Shapeshifting is hungry work.

Don’t feed me in animal form. It’s dangerous.

3. Do pet me—in human or animal form. I love to be petted.

Don’t try to leash or tame me. Only one mossback has been able to get close to doing that and he’s special.

4. Do know that I have magic.

Don’t ask me to use it in a way that upsets the cycle of nature.

A QUICKSILVER HEART
Released from the grip of a tyrant, the Twelve Kingdoms have thrown all that touch them into chaos. As the borders open, new enemies emerge to vie for their hard-won power—and old deceptions crumble under the strain…

The most talented shapeshifter of her generation, Zynda has one love in her life: freedom. The open air above her, the water before her, the sun on her skin or wings or fur—their sensual glories more than make up for her loneliness. She serves the High Queen’s company well, but she can’t trust her allies with her secrets, or the secrets of her people. Best that she should keep her distance, alone.

Except wherever she escapes, Marskal, the Queen’s quiet lieutenant, seems to find her. Solid, stubborn, and disciplined, he’s no more fluid than rock. Yet he knows what she likes, what thrills and unnerves her, when she’s hiding something. His lithe warrior’s body promises pleasure she has gone too long without. But no matter how careful, how tender, how incendiary he is, only Zynda can know the sacrifice she must make for her people’s future—and the time is drawing near…

The Shift of the Tide
Excerpt
Water streamed over my skin in a rush, enveloping and responsive at once, like music following my dance.

Around me, the shapes of coral resonated with depth, shading moving beyond the visual and into other spectrums. That was one reason I loved this form, where my echolocation gave sound nuance like a rainbow of color. The crystal waters teemed with sea life of all varieties, most of them quite tasty looking, making my stomach tingle with animal anticipation.

I exercised enough conscious control, however, to refrain from sampling the living buffet. Unless pressed into it in order to survive—which had happened more often since I undertook this quest than ever before in my life—I didn’t eat as an animal. It was one of those rules taught to Tala children early, one of the tricks and habits to forestall the worst disaster imaginable for a shapeshifter: being trapped forever in a non-human form.

With the great exception of Final Form. I’d accepted taking that as my destiny, as the only way to save my people. I would do it for my sister’s dead babies, and for the ones I would never have. I’d be lonely, perhaps, but my family was dying off one by one regardless. My mother was gone along with all my siblings, but two. And if Anya kept trying to have babies, she’d soon go with them. I would live my life alone, either way, and nothing would change that.

One day, quite soon, I would become a dragon, and stay that way forever.

Though that day drew ever closer—if I succeeded in getting the invitation I sought—for the moment I savored one of my favorites of my many forms, swimming hard and working out the restlessness that plagued me. If I got a choice of what form to be stuck in forever, I’d pick the dolphin. Its large, mammalian brain contained plenty of room to retain a good portion of reasoning and higher thought. Fast, agile, being a dolphin was simply fun. I’d learned it early and returned to it often.

Learning a new form is part instinct, part observation and study, and part gift from beyond. Some say those are the gifts of the three goddesses—knowledge of the heart from the goddess of love, dawn, and twilight, Glorianna; disciplined study from the warrior goddess of high noon, Danu; and the mysterious arcane touch of Moranu.

Most Tala look to Moranu first, and that’s largely why, because we are shapeshifters—and each shift is a leap of faith in the goddess of the moon, night and shadows. But I needed more than Moranu’s guidance to take Final Form. I needed a real dragon to teach me.

Our ancestors had found a way to shift into it, becoming the great, virtually immortal dragons of old. In that form they retained full consciousness—some said greater intelligence than human minds—along with all the magical gifts the shapeshifter had possessed. Most important, being a dragon came with the additional and priceless gift of modulating magic, something we needed desperately if the Tala, the magical and shapeshifting last remnants of the great races were to survive beyond another generation. We’d preserved so much—and yet not enough. So much knowledge the ancients had taken with them, that we failed to understand.

How it would feel to be the dragon… well, no one had been able to take Final Form in generations. So, no one could tell me if taking that irreversible final step felt like being trapped in an unyielding cage. Even if it would, much as the prospect revolted me, I would do it. And, once there, I would be unable to turn back. But the reward would be worth it. I firmly believed that.

Taking Final Form was both the pinnacle of accomplishment for a shapeshifter and the ultimate sacrifice, but we’d lost the intangible path when the dragons disappeared from the world.

Now that my friend and scholar Dafne, now Queen Nakoa KauPo of Nahanau, had awakened the dragon Kiraka from hibernation beneath the volcano, I hoped to be the first Tala to take Final Form. But that required an invitation from the great dragon, and so far she’d only spoken to Dafne. I tried to be patient—after all I’d waited my entire life for this moment, and generations of Tala had lived and died without ever reaching it—but the sense of time slipping away rushed around me like the crystal warm waters.

A pod of actual dolphins sounded in the distance, their convivial feeding luring me to join them, to enjoy for a while longer the joy of freedom from responsibility. I swam in their direction. Paused when the alarm call went up.

Shark.

And they had calves in the family group. No question that they should be protected at all costs. Babies are the future. Without them we die the final death.

I shot past the group encircling the calves, joining those who attacked the shark. Finding my opening, I angled exactly and rammed its gills with my beak, exulting in the crunch of soft cartilage. It should have flinched—from my blow and from the other dolphins, attacking the gills on the other side, and its soft belly—but it swam on. Almost mindlessly.

I had a bad taste in my mouth, both literally and metaphorically. Like magic gone rotten.

A limitation of the dolphin form, however, is that I can’t use my magical senses in it. Otherwise I would have probed for the source of the distasteful essence. As it was, the pod easily herded the shark away. It floundered in the water, slowing and sinking. It would be no threat to them or the precious calves.

The group sang to me, promising fish and fun. Very tempting to join them.

But I’d made promises, and I intended to keep them.

With a mental sigh, I headed back to shore. That had been enough of an exercise break to clear my mind and restore my sense of self. Mossbacks didn’t seem to understand how shifting into animal form could be a kind of recentering, as it looked to them like the exact opposite of that—going farther away from self, not more firmly into the center—but mutability anchors me in a way I can’t easily explain. Or would, even if I found the words. The Tala have a reputation for keeping secrets, and it’s well earned.

It’s also a dodgy undertaking, full of fine lines and careful obfuscation. Especially as we have no hard and fast rules—the Tala rarely do—beyond making sure no one ever again has the power to destroy what we’ve so carefully preserved.

Though that too lay in our future. I don’t have strong foresight, but the visions plagued even me. Oily shadows penetrating to soil the white cliffs of my home in Annfwn. Blood in the water. My cousin, the High Queen of the Thirteen Kingdoms thought the Temple of Deyrr, with their unholy black magic and corrupt rituals to enslave the living dead was all her problem. But that ancient and lethal arrow pointed ultimately at the Heart of Annfwn. The beginning of this conflict, and the prophesied site of the end of it.

Not for me, however. My task had been set before the priestess of Deyrr showed up at the court of Ordnung, corrupting the former high king. Others would take up that battle. Though I’d helped my companions, doing my best to make sure the powerful jewel, the Star of Annfwn stayed out of the High Priestess of Deyrr’s fetid hands, ultimately protecting the thirteen—and the other realms inside the protective magical barrier—would fall to them. My allegiance belonged to the Tala and my personal mission, first and foremost. It would do us no good to turn back Deyrr, only for the Tala to wither and die.

As the dragon, at least, I’d be well situated to fight to defend my homeland of Annfwn.

Had that been the oddly familiar flavor of the shark? It didn’t seem likely. Not here in the waters of Nahanau, a fair distance from the barrier. I’d never encountered Deyrr’s living dead at Ordnung—they’d all been burnt by the time I arrived—but I had tasted the High Priestess’s magic when she attacked Ursula. They could be the same. Though why it would be in a mindless shark, I didn’t know.

Troubling.

Once in the shallows, I shifted back to human form, swimming with a relaxed breast stroke until my feet found the bottom. While the Nahanauns had become more accustomed to my presence around the palace, they weren’t accustomed to shapeshifting. After a few early displays to impress them with my abilities—at my companions’ behest, mostly to demonstrate that we weren’t captives to be underestimated—I preferred to shift discreetly. I rarely cared to make a show of it, regardless. It’s a private thing. Intimate.

It’s called El Toque de la Luna–The Touch of the Moon. At least that’s how nineteen-year-old Gabby’s older sister, Esperanza, refers to the magical powers she inherited from their Mayan ancestors. Esperanza says women with El Toque weave magic into their knitting, creating tapestries capable of saving–or devastating–the world. Gabby thinks Esperanza is more like touched in the head–until a man dressed like a candy corn arrives at their Seattle home on Halloween. But “Mr. C” is far from sweet…

Soon, Gabby and her almost-more-than-friend, Frank, find themselves spirited away to a demon ball, complete with shape shifters–and on a mission to destroy Esperanza’s tapestries before they cause an apocalyptic disaster… And before it’s too late to confess their true feelings for each other.

Do not judge this book based on the cover or the title, both of which needed some major work, cause this story is amazingly wondrous! I'll get into this a little more in a minute. For now, the Fey are coming at you in a whole new light. Demons and fighting ancient evil, sure it's been done before. But not like this!

I was sucked in from the first heartbreaking chapter. The humanness of this tale is off the charts. The character development and interaction was everything you could hope for and more. Lore that was deeply rooted and well thought out. The heavy situations these folks face, while fantastical, seem realistic in this dynamic world. I was blown away, on many levels and this continued throughout many of the chapters.

In a word: marvelous. I wish to the lore I could say "flawless", but there were a few things that needed to be reworked a tad. The cover and title, as mentioned. Both of which do not do justice for the tale. The face, it has no meaning to the overall depth this story portrays. The title of this book, it holds no value for the struggle and obstacles that are faced.

There was a lot of build up to the Stag Lord himself, but once you get to him the story almost comes apart. He's not the imposing character that I thought he would be. I mean maybe he's got more to come, but with book one you just really expected something a little more dangerous.

Overall, this is a great start to a new series. Book two is not coming out until the end of 2015, which I hate! I want it now! But, this gives everyone the time needed to get caught up. And maybe, just maybe, change the cover. *shudders*

The sequel, Unholy Blue, will be released December 2015 from Spence City.

Sheep Review: Deadlocked by Charliane Harris

This post is more of me telling you how much and why I love this series and why you should read it. I also talk about Deadlocked and there are no spoilers

by Sharon Stogner
co-creator & media relations

With Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), in town, it’s the worst possible time for a body to show up in Eric Northman’s front yard—especially the body of a woman whose blood he just drank.
Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down.

There are tons of reviews out there on this book already so no need for me to say what has already been said. Instead I will do one of my favorite things...gush and talk about this series and why you should read it. First I will say if I had to judge Deadlocked against the other books in the series it wouldn’t be at the top as far as main storylines go, but I don’t look at the books in this series that way. Instead I see them as a continuation of one fabulous urban fantasy story so I can't tell you what happened in each book. There is only one more book left (excuse me while a take a moment *sob*) and Harris has started to wrap up some secondary storylines, as well as setting up the events for the last book; the secondary characters seem to all be getting their nice and tidy HEAs, which is fine with me. The faerie story line appears to have ended with a surprise I didn’t see coming, which makes me sad 'cause I love those characters.

The big question is Sookie’s love life. Harris said in the talk I went to that this series isn’t one of those HEA romances. In this book Eric’s fate seems to have been decided and Bill has declared his feelings in a very romantic way. Then there is her best friend Sam, and while Deadlocked changes things for him dramatically, where Harris is going with this remains unknown. Has anyone given thought to the idea that Sookie's HEA might not include a man at all...maybe she will be happiest just being self sufficient and all the ones she loves in a good place.

Now, why do I love this series so much? Harris’ writing voice. I LOVE first person POV books and Sookie’s character resonates with me perfectly. I can slip easily into her head because we think so much alike. Maybe because I am a southern girl and her inner dialogue feels natural to me.

"There is something about JB, something warm and simple that's really appealing, especially when added to hid non-threatening good looks. He's like a great loaf of homemade bread."

"He was just being polite because I am Claude's cousin," I said. "Like hell! He was looking at you like you were chocolate-chip-cookie-dough ice cream," she said. "He wanted to eat you up."
I was pretty sure she was right, but maybe not in the sense she meant; not that I could read Bellenos's mind, any more than that of any other supernatural creature...but elves are what you'd call unrestricted in their diet..."

Will you like this series? Don’t judge the books by the TV show, they are hardly the same beast. The books have characters that don’t even show up in the show like Bubba. He is actually Elvis, but his transition into a vampire didn’t go so well and he doesn’t like it when people use his real name. Also, he eats cats.

Grab the first book Dead Until Dark and read a few pages or download a sample and see if you like looking at the world through Sookie’s eyes. Next year will be book #13 and the last. I will be sorry to see this world end, but like Harris said, it is time to move on.
I found this over on parajunkee.com and it definitely applies here

Sheep Review: Bear Meets Girl by Shelly Laurenston

Bear Meets Girl, by Shelly Laurenston is the seventh novel in her PNR Pride series. An animal kingdom fist-fighting, sexually good time!

Plot:
He's big, burly, and way smarter than your average shapeshifting bear. He's also about to get trapped by own his game...Lou Crushek is a reasonable, mellow, easygoing kind of guy. But once someone starts killing the scumbags he works so hard to bust, that really gets under his fur. Especially when that someone is a curvy she-tiger with a skill set that's turning Crush's lone-bear world upside down - and bringing his passion out of hibernation...As a member of an elite feline protection unit, Marcella Malone has no problem body-dropping anyone who hunts her kind. But Crush is proving one major pain in her gorgeous tail. The only reason she's joined forces with him is to track down the wealthy human who's got her entire species in his ruthless sights. It sure isn't because Crush's stubborn and contrary attitude is rubbing Cella in all the right ways...

I jumped into Shelly's world of shifters with this latest book, so knowing nothing about the author or her saga I wasn't sure what to expect. Bear Meets Girl is a snark-fest of one liners and banter that's so over the top I loved it. Playful humor and pranks are used between characters from beginning to end and I found myself laughing through the story consistently. I love a good comedy and some raunch to go along with it! You'll get both in this one, and if you enjoy adult humor played to the tunes of East Cost fist-pumping tigers then you'll want to pick this up.

Our lead couple was Polar Bear Crush and She-Tiger Cella. The playful tiger meets the safe and steady polar bear and let me tell ya, all hell's about to break loose. Cella sure knows how to dish out the punches because not only is she trained in special ops but she's also a badass hockey star. Crush is ALL male and good lordy is he hot hot hot on page! Tall and ripped to the gills this man-candy beef-cake steams up the pages with his bear charm. Someone pour honey on me! [BAK: You do know polar bears are the only creatures known to actively hunt humans, right? Furthermore they eat seafood so do you want to be covered in fish guts?] Riiight, ok so no fish guts for me but you get the idea. A hot lead male that knows how to lay it all down for the woman his body craves and a gal who can take on any situation with guts, glory, and a wicked right hook!

It's always nice to read about woman who can be WOMAN and not weep or moan about men all the time. Cella won me over and Crush only added to the whole package. On the downside though this saga is deeply involved and jumping in where I did left me confused in parts. So many different shifters are in this one. From tigers, bears, dogs, rats, wolfs, hyenas, woodchucks to penguins. Ok, maybe not the cute little tuxedo buddies but there are many different huge shifters families involved so it's hard to keep track of who is who.

It's a dialog heavy book with the focus being on the main couple, hockey, and snark. When the action comes it is fast and to the point, which was good and bad, but with the ladies beating each other up all the time you get more then enough fighting to keep things interesting. The romance was out of this world between our leads, you can feel the sparks and trust me you'll want more! Overall I'd recommended newcomers to do your homework and get up to speed with where things are in the overall saga and folks already invested should have no problems getting to the good stuff.

Sheep Book Review: 'Within the Flames' by Marjorie Liu

Within the Flames, by author Marjorie Liu is the 11th novel in her PNR series Dirk & Steele. Unequivocally one of the best books out there, Lyssa and Eddie burn up the pages in a flaming hot paranormal whirlwind! The gauntlet has been thrown my friends with Liu smashing down anything in her way. The level of excellence contained in Within the Flames takes the reader to the edge of emotion and back, pushing within the boundaries of this whimsical PNR world.

Plot:
A pyrokinetic and former car thief, Eddie cannot refuse an assignment to cross the continent in order to rescue an extraordinary woman in peril…even though he fears losing control of the destructive power of flame at his fingertips. The last of her shape-shifting kind, Lyssa hides in the abandoned tunnels beneath Manhattan. Like Eddie, fire is her weapon, her destiny…and her curse. For beneath Lyssa’s extraordinary beauty are dangerous secrets…and even darker, nearly irresistible urges…

Lyssa and Eddie are one of my new favorite book couples! Coming from extremely heart breaking pasts, these two lost souls come crashing into each others lives. When a band of psychotic witches unleash their plot to take over the world, and not in the 'Pinky and the Brain' kind of way things get crazy fast. The coo-coo group of witch gals are sucking peoples souls and torturing them relentlessly with endless mind games and excruciating physical pain. It's torture to read at times but a torture I'd gladly read over and over if not to be deeply submerged once again in this magnificent world.

Liu touches on so many issues it's hard to cover them all in one simple review, and honestly anything I have to say could never give this latest book its full due. But to provide a basic summary, you have a world of class issues, humanity rights, prejudice, loss and ultimate evil tipping the scales of power. Amongst it all is the power of love and how much would it take to have love light the way. Is it ever really enough? Lyssa's character in specific has been on the run for so long that letting anyone close is extremely difficult for her, letting anyone get close could end up getting that person killed. Eddie's on what he thinks is a milk run job for his employer, Dirk & Steele, but little does he know his life is about to get completely turned upside down. The world he thought he knew changes in more ways then he could have ever expected.

In an adventure taking you from San Francisco to New York, Liu heats up the pages with some smoking, fire-wielding romance. And while this may be a PNR, do NOT be fooled by the classification. It's more then just a smexy story with hot men to lap your tongue at, it's an action-packed adventure from beginning to end with everything you could ever hope for in between. The full range of the emotional rainbow is covered with a solid stamp of genuine genius which will leave you throughly engrossed. In a word: Masterpiece.

Good and Evil plus all the grey in between are covered in Within the Flames, truly an outstanding story that I'd recommend to anyone. If you're sick and tired of the same thing reach out and grab a hold of this world. You won't be disappointed and you will thank me for it!

The Tears of Elios by author Crista McHugh + Kindle giveaway!

The Tears of Elios, written by Crista McHugh, is the first book in her new series called 'The Elgan Chronicles'. A fantastical world of magic sucks the reader in for a journey stretching across a mystical action packed realm.

Synopsis:
Shape-shifters’ Rule #1: Don’t let the humans know you still exist. Rule #2: If a human finds out about you, silence them. Some rules were meant to be broken… Ranealya ruthlessly plays by the rules and has outlived most of her race because of it. If she wants to survive, she’ll have to stick to them, especially with a genocidal tyrant hell-bent on destroying all the non-humans in the realm. But everything falls apart when a human saves her life. Gregor knows he’s inviting trouble when he helps a wounded shape-shifter, but he can’t pass up the opportunity to study one before they become extinct. She disturbs the quiet order of his scholarly existence, vexes him in more ways than he can count, and encourages him to break enough of the kingdom’s laws so that not even being the king’s cousin will save his head. The problem is, he’s already lost his heart.

First I'd like to say that a few editing errors unfortunately got missed before the book was published. I've spoken personally to Crista and she's on top of getting the problem rectified. But for those that get a copy before any changes can be address please make note of this. This was one of the only drawbacks to the story. It's a little frustrating to get caught up in a story then have words missing or used in the wrong places. I also would have liked to get a bit more character description and backstory which would allow me to get invested in the characters more. I felt that, without the backstory, the characters in the books seemed a little less fleshed out.

The story has a wonderful twist in which you get two different sets of main characters who end up intermixing their storylines towards the end. I was blown away by the creative world Crista has compiled in her novels. It takes some new ideas about magic and mixes in old folklore and other more traditional ideas. I'm not sure if I could call this story is UF or High Fantasy, but it's definitely one that the young adult crowd would also be able to dive into. For those needing some smut in their lives *cough me cough* you wont get much of that here. And while I understand some people think that it draws away from the story *cough Ben cough* it's always a great bonus to a good book in my opinion.

Fairies playing nasty tricks and humans wanting to take over the realm keep the reader turning the pages to find out what could possibly happen next. Characters dealing with choices from the past and moving forward into the future keep the book relevant and relateable to our own lives while still having fantastical elements. Overall the story is a great first start with some kinks that will inevitably get worked out I look forward to more books from this series.
