This romance novel can be read alone, but it’s set in a common world with book one.

After a pack raids a vampire compound, they discover a young woman being kept in the dungeon separate from all the other humans being held against their will. Unsure why she was in a cell by herself, or what species she is, the pack members turn her over to their Alpha, Dante, to decide what to do with her. Dante has no idea what she is but knows that if the vampires kept her isolated, it might be in the pack’s best interest to bring her back to their compound to figure out what she is. After being held against her will for almost a year, River’s only goal is to protect her secret of what species she is and find a way to escape as soon as possible from the shifters.

Dante and River seem to hate each other but have a connection that can’t be explained. Most of the pack members really like River and try to help her any way they can, much to the disapproval of Dante.

The mystery of what species River is continues to baffle everyone, including the reader, for much of the book, which I really liked. It’s nice to read a book that you can’t figure out a few chapters into.

Sassy might be dying but she's bound and determined to continue to be the leader of the human resistance and take out as many vampires as she can before her time is up. Donovan and her sister are leaving the country, and to satisfy her sister, she says she will join them at a later date. Donovan brings in a new Alpha to lead the pack while he and Pen are on an extended vacation, and at first look Sassy figures, he'll do in a pinch to satisfy her lust, but when he walks away from her because she's the sick girl the desire to avoid Cole at all costs seems like a good plan.

As the leader of the resistance, Sassy figures she has nothing to lose, so when Cole and the other members of the pack warn her to stay out of trouble, she continues to pacify them since she won't be alive for long anyways. Cole comes to Sassy with an agreement that she won't be able to pass on, and even though his attraction to her continues to bother him, he knows this is the only way to achieve his goal.

This series of Augustine is a good standalone paranormal romance, but I highly recommend reading book 1 first.

Penelope and Donovan are not star-crossed lovers in this new world, where humans are relegated to servant status among the ruling monsters, no, not star crossed lovers, casualties of a system that casts them in certain roles, each doing the best that they can to survive. When their paths cross, Donavan is forced to decide if he will help Pen or allow her to suffer from monsters who have it out for her. His choice sets the story in motion down a windy path.

I loved this book, Donna Augustine is at top form in this story of honor and hope. The novel was well written, she breaks out of some of her normal genre but stayed well within things that go bump in the night. Great book!

The next series of Augustine is Torn Worlds starting with Book 1 Gut Deep. The supernatural decided they’d had enough of humans and took over America. The vampires, shifters, fairies, as well as many other supernatural beings, are now the upper class where humans have been demoted to the lowest class possible. Humans aren’t allowed to have smartphones or help each other to name a few of the rules of the new society. If caught with anything that is considered an infraction death is a real possibility. 

Penelope now works for a shifter family in this new world of terror. She makes just enough to barely feed her family and that’s if her dad doesn’t get ahold of it and use it to buy booze. When she’s asked to work an event at her shifter employer’s house, she’s ecstatic because this might be the chance, she needs to find the cure for her sick sister that one of the higher up vampires is rumored to possess.

Donovan is the Alpha of the DC pack and has been summoned to his mother’s house for a dinner between the shifters and the vampires. Donovan hates going to his mother’s get-togethers but this is his once a year stay at her house so he will suffer through it. What he finds is Penelope, a server who has found herself in more trouble than she could possibly imagine. Against his usual indifference for humans, he extends help to her and finds himself in over his head with this human.
