LONE GUNMAN
-1-
The soldier lay dead.

Mostly.

But not entirely.

And how like the world that was.

Mostly dead. But not entirely.

-2-
He was buried.

Not under six feet of dirt. There might have been some comfort in that. Some closure. Maybe even a measure of justice.

He wasn’t buried like that. Not in a graveyard, either. Certainly not in Arlington, where his dad would have wanted to see him laid to rest. And not in that small cemetery back home in California, where his grandparents lay under the marble and the green cool grass.

The soldier was in some shit-hole of a who-cares town on the ass-end of Fayette County in Pennsylvania. Not under the ground. Not in a coffin.

He was buried under the dead.

Dozens of them.

Hundreds. A mountain of bodies. Heaped over and around him. Crushing him down, smothering him, killing him.

Not with teeth, though. Not tearing at him with broken fingernails. That was something, at least. Not much. Not a fucking lot. And maybe there was some kind of cosmic joke in all of this. He was certain of that much. A killer of men like him killed by having corpses piled on top of him. A quiet, passive death that had a kind of bullshit poetry attached to it.

However Sam Imura was not a particularly poetic man. He understood it, appreciated it, but did not want to be written into it. No thanks.

He lay there, thinking about it. Dying. Not caring that this was it, that this was the actual end.

Knowing that thought to be a lie. Rationalization at best. His stoicism trying to give his fears a last handjob. No, it’s okay, it’s a good death.

Except that was total bullshit. There were no good deaths. Not one. He had been a soldier all his life, first in the regular army, then in Special Forces, and then in covert ops with a group called the Department of Military Sciences, and then freelance as top dog of a team of heavily armed problem solvers who ran under the nickname the Boy Scouts. Always a soldier. Pulling triggers since he was a kid. Taking lives so many times and in so many places that Sam had stopped counting. Idiots keep a count. Ego-inflated assholes keep count. A lot of his fellow snipers kept count. He didn’t. He was never that crazy.

Now he wished he had. He wondered if the number of people he had killed with firearms, edged-weapons, explosives, and his bare hands equaled the number of corpses under which he was buried.

There would be a strange kind of justice in that, too. And poetry. As if all of the people he’d killed were bound to him, and that they were all fellow passengers on a black shipping sailing to Valhalla. He knew that was a faulty metaphor, but fuck it. He was dying under a mountain of dead ghouls who had been trying to eat him a couple of hours ago. So…yeah, fuck poetry and fuck metaphors and fuck everything.

Sam wondered if he was going crazy.

He could build a case for it.

“No….”

He heard himself say that. A word. A statement. But even though it had come from him, Sam didn’t exactly know what he meant by it. No, he wasn’t crazy? No, he wasn’t part of some celestial object lesson? No, he wasn’t dying?

“No.”

He said it again, taking ownership of the word. Owning what it meant.

No.

I’m not dead.

No, I’m not dying.

He thought about those concepts, and rejected them.

“No,” he growled. And now he understood what he was trying to tell himself and this broken, fucked up world.

No. I’m not going to die.

Not here. Not now. Not like this. No motherfucking way. Fuck that, fuck these goddamn flesh-eating pricks, fuck the universe, fuck poetry two times, fuck God, fuck everything.

Fuck dying.

“No,” he said once more, and now he heard himself in that word. The soldier, the survivor, the killer.

The dead hadn’t killed him, and they had goddamn well tried. The world hadn’t killed him, not after all these years. And the day hadn’t killed him. He was sure it was nighttime by now, and he wasn’t going to let that kill him, either.

And so he tried to move.

Easier said than done. The bodies of the dead had been torn by automatic gunfire as the survivors of the Boy Scouts had fought to help a lady cop, Dez Fox, and some other adults rescue several busloads of kids. They’d all stopped at the Sapphire Foods distribution warehouse to stock up before heading south to a rescue station. The dead had come hunting for their own food and they’d come in waves. Thousands of them. Fox and the Boy Scouts had fought their way out.

Kind of.

Sam had gone down under a wave of them and Gipsy, one of the shooters on his team, had tried to save him, hosing the ghouls with magazine after magazine. The dead fell and Sam had gone down beneath them. No one had come to find him, to dig him out.

He heard the bus engines roar. He heard Gipsy scream, though he didn’t know if it was because the hungry bastards got her, or because she failed to save him. Impossible to say. Impossible to know unless he crawled out and looked for her body. Clear enough, though, to reason that she’d seen him fall and thought that he was dead. He should have been, but that wasn’t an absolute certainty. He was dressed in Kevlar, with reinforced arm and leg pads, spider-silk gloves, a ballistic combat helmet with unbreakable plastic visor. There was almost no spot for teeth to get him. And, besides, Gipsy’s gunfire and Sam’s own had layered him with actual dead. Or whatever the new adjective was going to be for that. Dead was no longer dead. There was walking and biting dead and there was dead dead.

Sam realized that he was letting his mind drift into trivia. A defense mechanism. A fear mechanism.

“No,” he said again. That word was his lifeline and it was his lash, his whip.

No.

He tried to move. Found that his right hand could move almost ten inches. His feet were good, too, but there were bodies across his knees and chest and head. No telling how high the mound was, but they were stacked like Jenga pieces. The weight was oppressive but it hadn’t actually crushed the life out of him. Not yet. He’d have to be careful moving so as not to crash the whole stinking mass on them down and really smash the life out of him.

It was a puzzle of physics and engineering, of patience and strategy. Sam had always prided himself on being a thinker rather than a feeler. Snipers were like that. Cold, exacting, precise. Patient.

Except…

When he began to move, he felt the mass of bodies move, too. At first he thought it was simple cause and effect, a reaction of limp weight to gravity and shifting support. He paused, and listened. There was no real light, no way to see. He knew that he had been unconscious for a while and so this had to be twilight, or later. Night. In the blackness of the mound he had nothing but his senses or touch and hearing to guide every movement of hand or arm or hip. He could tell when some movement he made caused a body, or a part of a body, to shift.

But then there was a movement up to his right. He had not moved his right arm or shoulder. He hadn’t done anything in that quadrant of his position. All of his movements so far had been directed toward creating a space for his legs and hips to move because they were the strongest parts of him and could do more useful work longer than his arms or shoulders. The weight directly over his chest and what rested on his helmet had not moved at all.

Until they did.

There was a shift. No, a twitch. A small movement that was inside the mound. As if something moved. Not because of him.

Because it moved.

Oh, Jesus, he thought and for a moment he froze solid, not moving a finger, hardly daring to breathe, as he listened and felt for another twitch.

He waited five minutes. Ten? Time was meaningless.

There.

Again.

Another movement. Up above him. Not close, but not far away, either. How big was the mound? What was the distance? Six feet from his right shoulder? Six and a half feet from his head? Something definitely moved.

A sloppy, heavy movement. Artless, clumsy. But definite. He could hear the rasp of clothing against clothing, the slither-sound of skin brushing against skin. Close. So close. Six feet was nothing. Even with all of the dead limbs and bodies in the way.

Book Reviews: X-Ops Exposed (X-Ops #8) by Paige Tyler

X-Ops Exposed (X-Ops #8)
by Paige Tyler
April 3, 2018
Paperback, 384 pages
Sourcebooks Casablanca

Lion hybrid and former Army Ranger Tanner Howland retreats into the forests of Washington State to be alone—he’s too dangerous to be around people. He had to leave the love of his life behind but little does he know, she followed him.

Dr. Zarina Sokolov has an anti-serum she hopes will make Tanner human again. But before she can convince him to take it, they discover he isn’t the only hybrid that survived the experiment. And there are people who want to use the hybrid shifters for sport, pitting them against each other for money. But does Tanner have what it takes to save his fellow hybrids and Zarina—or will he lose control again?

Eight books, can you believe it? Eight books into Paige Tyler’s X-Ops series and things are going in a direction that could lead to a major battle for survival. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m excited.

Tanner has been a character that I’ve wondered about since he stepped onto the pages of the first book. As a shifter hybrid, Tanner was created in a lab and therefore had most of the characteristics of the hybrids. He was stronger and faster than natural born shifters but like other hybrids, he was also wild, uncontrollable, and very dangerous. But he also had a deep connection with Zarina, a doctor that was being held prisoner along with him. Their connection has been shown in all the books leading up to this one and it really is a special one.

Throughout the series, Zarina has been trying to help Tanner control his more savage urges and for the most part, it had been working, until an event forced Tanner to unleash his hybrid side and he accidentally attacked a friend. That freaked him out enough that he left the DCO where he’d been staying to live in the woods. Naturally, Zarina followed him and was almost mauled by a bear until Tanner showed up to chase it off. Zarina stubbornly refused to leave him and Tanner has no choice but to keep her with him. Not that it’s a hardship, these two have always shown how much they care for each other even if they never officially crossed the line into lovers until now. Of course, nothing is ever easy and soon they find out that Tanner wasn’t the only hybrid survivor and that humans now want to use them for sport, pitting hybrid against hybrid for money.

Fans of the series already knew Tanner and Zarina were deeply in love but the thing was these two characters hadn’t openly admitted it to anyone. X-Ops Exposed did justice to their relationship by first showing just how special and deep their connection ran. Zarina was the sole calming influence on Tanner’s otherwise dangerous hybrid side and Tanner brought Zarina comfort and solid friendship. Paige Tyler then puts these two in situations where they spent a lot of time alone together without the prying eyes of the DCO and their shifter friends. Their romance seemed so natural and so right while at the same time hot and sexy. It was during their moments together that you get to see a more lighthearted, charming side of Tanner. He’s happy for once whereas before he had this sense of doom around him. After eight books of him being Mr. Negative/Emo, I did a double take at the new side of him. It was refreshing and kept the character from feeling stale and becoming predictable. As did the setting for this book.

X-Ops Exposed takes readers away from the DCO to see how “The Other Half Lives” aka shifters and hybrids who weren’t picked up by the DCO and are having to scratch a living for themselves in hiding. I’m hoping that the hybrids have a larger role to play in future books since they’ve been popping up so much recently.

With eight books down, there are a lot of characters at this point and I’m sure many more to come. I enjoyed the quick “check-ins” with most if not all the characters from previous books and I just realized that up until this point I haven’t had a favorite couple from this series. This is unheard of for me! By this time in a series, I usually have a stand out favorite but the series is so much fun and the characters have all been on equal standing with me that I haven’t said: “Oh my gosh this one is my favorite!” They all have something special.

As it has been since the beginning, I enjoyed this book. It was definitely more on the romantic side because Tanner and Zarina’s emotions have been building up in the background of previous books and if you’re a fan of longing, friendship, and love then X-Ops Exposed might end up being your favorite in the series.

Paige Tyler’s paranormal romances are easy on the reader and that’s part of their appeal in my opinion. There’s more emphasis on characters, romance, and plot than on saturating it with paranormal aspects. I love that I can get my dose of paranormal without getting a headache with massive info dumps about species of creatures, histories of those creatures, feudal families, etc. The X-Ops series is straight up romantic suspense with paranormal elements. That means that each book can easily be read as a standalone but I will admit that readers will get the most out of them if they’re read in order.

Book Review: Her Dark Half (X-Ops #7) by Paige Tyler

Her Dark Half (X-Ops #7)
by Paige Tyler
September 5th 2017
Mass Market Paperback, 352 pages
by Sourcebooks Casablanca
Trevor Maxwell
Coyote shifter with an attitude

Covert operator
Trusts no one, especially his devastatingly beautiful new partner

Alina Bosch
Former CIA, newest operative on the covert team
Hired to spy on her partner
Motto: "Never be deceived again."

Coyote shifter Trevor Maxwell is teamed up with CIA agent Alina Bosch to catch a killer. But when the mission becomes much more dangerous than they expected, they're going to have to ignore the attraction between them and learn how to trust one another to come out on the other side...

With everything that happened in the previous book, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Her Dark Half to see just how my favorite characters old and new would handle the fallout.

The setup is that after the murder of his former boss, Coyote shifter Trevor Maxwell doesn’t know who to trust outside of the now branded “rogue” shifters accused of murdering said boss. Trevor certainly doesn’t trust his new human partner Alina Bosch, a former CIA agent secretly hired to spy on Trevor. But they’re definitely attracted to each other and they don’t have much time to learn to trust each other before their real enemies close in on them.

From the very start, Her Dark Half hit the ground running and kept up a pretty fast pace which I appreciated because there was a definite sense of urgency and a small window of time that Trevor and Alina had to work with. I could almost hear the clock ticking in my mind as the plot progressed and it seemed like Trevor and Alina would put the puzzle pieces together too late. All of Tyler’s books have that “can’t put it down to save my life” feel but this book totally got my blood pumping and had me biting my nails for real with how narrowly these two escaped with their lives.

As a couple though, Trevor and Alina’s romance kind of took a back seat because, hello! There were a few more important things to get done and lives to save but that didn’t mean that there wasn’t a romance. I loved how Paige Tyler made their romance seem natural even though they started off not trusting each other. The timeline was pretty quick for a romance but I felt it was more of a this is a great beginning to something real kind of love for Trevor and Alina. If that makes sense.

The big plot twist that occurred in the previous book is resolved here which okay I thought was a bit quick but at the same time there were a lot of loose ends that could keep the series going for a long time (Oh please let it keep going for a long time, it’s one of my favorites). I did love the twists and turns that happened towards the end because it made me feel like while the Big Bad was down, he wasn’t the only Big Bad, in fact there are bigger, badder ones out there that this tight knit group may not be prepared for. That uncertainty makes for very exciting possibilities and again, more books.

Her Dark Half can technically be read as a standalone BUT I wouldn’t suggest it. Start at the beginning of the series so that the build-up to this point leaves you with the best feeling. I kid you not it is worth the time.

Book Reviews: Her True Match (X-Ops Book 6) by Paige Tyler

FORCED TOGETHER

When feline shifter Dreya Clark is escorted from the police interrogation by two secret agents, she thinks she's dodged a bullet. That sexy detective Braden Hayes caught her stealing red-handed. When she finds out what she has to do to stay out of jail, suddenly she's missing the hot cop with the piercing gaze. She's being recruited for her shifter abilities by the Department of Covert Operations.

WILL DANGER RIP THEM APART?
Braden has been chasing the smart-mouthed cat burglar for years. But when Dreya's taken away, he knows their game of cat and mouse has turned deadly-serious. There's no way he'll let her go off alone. Fur flies and temperatures flare as Braden realizes Dreya is much more than she appears. Thrown together on a dangerous covert mission, this unlikely pair will have to rely on each other to make it out alive.

Detective Braden Hayes has finally caught the cat burgler he’s been after for years but before he can question her, two agents swoop in and escort his thief out. Feline shifter Dreya Clark thinks she’s safe from Braden’s prying questions but when the agents reveal that they not only know about Dreya’s shifter abilities but that she’s being recruited to work for the Department of Covert Operations because of them, Dreya starts wishing she had stayed with the detective. Then Braden is discovered following them and he’s brought into the DCO as well. As Dreya’s potential partner. That’s when things turn seriously hot, and seriously dangerous.

Paige Tyler is shaking up her X-Ops world in a big way with Her True Match!

Longtime X-Ops fans (Like me) already know who Braden and Dreya are. He’s been trying to catch her in the act of stealing and she’s been lucky enough to avoid being caught until now. I’m glad that Braden and Dreya’s book was the one to shake things up. They’ve been a favorite of mine since the very first time they appeared on the pages in a previous book. Their chemistry was always there and I’m glad that they both lived up to my expectations. Braden and Dreya made an excellent team in part to that chemistry and their attraction to one another but also because whatever one lacked, the other made up for. It was a great balance that was showcased the best when these two were on a mission and having to watch each other’s backs. The action and fast paced plot leaves no room for boredom and that’s one of the things I love best about this author.

Her True Match also brought in almost all of the previous characters in some way, even if it was just mentioning their names, and that was a little bittersweet because right when I thought everything was getting wrapped up at the end, Tyler dropped a bombshell of a twist that had my jaw dropping and my emotions rioting. I’m definitely not going to spoil it because you just have to read this book for yourself (I would recommend reading the previous books first so that you can grasp just how much of a shocker this was), I will say that it was really gutsy of Paige Tyler to shake up the bigger plotline this way and it left me with the question of: What’s next for this group and for the ones that come after? I’m such a fan of Tyler’s work, she always manages to get me so involved with all her characters and her storylines but with this one, wow, I was caught off guard by the way this book ended. Now I’m just trying to distract myself until the next book is out and I can find out just what’s going to happen next.

What a way to make sure this fan loses her mind while waiting for the next book! Her True Match is definitely going on my Best Reads of 2017 list.

Book Review: Her Rogue Alpha (X-Ops #5) by Paige Tyler

by Paige Tyler
September 6th 2016
by Sourcebooks Casablanca
Mass Market Paperback, 320 pages

HE'LL DO ANYTHING FOR HER

Former Special Forces Lieutenant Jayson Harmon can't believe that his war scars don't matter to beautiful feline shifter Layla Halliwell. Why would she saddle herself with a broken man?

But Layla knows that Jayson is a hero to the core, and that only she can heal his wounded soul. So when Jayson is deployed on another deadly mission, no way is Layla staying behind.

I don’t know how Paige Tyler keeps writing such interesting stories but I hope she doesn’t stop with this series. Basically, Layla and Jayson have been in a relationship for a while but while shifter Layla sees nothing but the best when she looks at Jayson, he looks in the mirror and sees a battle scarred invalid that can’t even hold the woman he’s falling for without feeling pain. So when the opportunity comes up to change his fate, Jayson snatches it and goes on a dangerous mission to prove he can handle being by Layla’s side and in her life.

I have been waiting for Layla and Jayson’s story for a while now and I am glad to say it didn’t disappoint! I wanted to know how Jayson was going to overcome his insecurities and bitterness with his physical limitations and I felt that Tyler did a great job of making him work through all of it in a timely manner. They didn’t just “poof” into thin air, it was definitely a process that had its setbacks and its rewards but without sacrificing Jayson’s hidden sense of humor or emasculating him in the process. Out of all the heroes in this series, I felt like Jayson was the most dashing of them all. Maybe it’s just because I have a soft spot for wounded combat soldiers but I loved him.

But I can’t forget Layla who makes one heck of a heroine. She’s been a background character for so long that she kind of faded away and now that she was in the spotlight she had a lot to prove. She had a sister who didn’t want her in the field and a boyfriend who thought he wasn’t good enough for her. Not to mention more than a few baddies out to eradicate her kind. But even though she was a butt kicking shifter, Layla’s most defining trait was her patience. Where most women would have had it out with Jayson for his hot and cold moods, Layla was ever patient and loyal. She wasn’t a doormat but she wasn’t without empathy either. She was just this really cool balance of bad ass shifter and loving girlfriend. She and Jayson were great together.

Her Rogue Alpha like its predecessors makes sure to have previous characters drop in and sometimes play a small part in the current story but they never take over scenes and they don’t stay long. Paige Tyler makes sure that the readers’ focus is entirely on the main characters for that story and on the ever growing plot that centers around the shifters and the villains who are looking to engineer their own brand of animal shifter. I have always enjoyed these books and this one was no exception. There was heat, humor, and heart in it which is so important for a romance. All in all another solid foray into adventure and danger with two characters who had been building something special in the background of the previous books and now find themselves at a crossroads in their relationship.

Book Review: Her Fierce Warrior (X-Ops #4) by Paige Tyler

by Paige Tyler
March 1st 2016
352 pages
by Sourcebooks Casablanca
The woman tensed. As anger and fear ricocheted across her face, her eyes changed from red to green to brown in a dizzying display like nothing he'd ever seen.

Every instinct in Angelo's body screamed at him to lunge for his weapon. Instead he set his feet for impact, blocking her slashing claws. Unbelievably, after a few moments of struggling, she went still, all the fight gone...

Minka isn't sure she should trust the sexy Special Forces soldier who found her. Subjected to horrors, on the run from scientists set on locking her in a cage, Minka is terrified of the monster she's becoming...and somehow, Angelo is the only one who can calm the beast inside her and make her feel safe.

But can she trust the way he makes her feel when she's not even sure she can trust herself?

Woot! Woot! Time to jump into another installment of Paige Tyler’s X-Ops series and this time it’s a hybrid in the spotlight! And she has a really cool name!

Okay so when Her Fierce Warrior begins, Minka Pajari has just escaped a secret lab where she was experimented on and tortured and is now a feline hybrid. She feels out of control and enraged when she meets Special Forces officer Angelo Rios who knows exactly where Minka needs to go. Fortunately Minka seems calmer in his presence even though she’s not entirely sure she can trust him but he’s the only one willing to accept her as is at that moment so she allows Angelo to take her with him to the states where she begins to learn more about her new status and Angelo himself.

First off, how cool is the heroine’s name? Minka Pajari. It sounds so exotic and rolls off the tongue easily. Plus it isn’t a name I’ve run across before in a romance. I loved this character. She was an innocent, somewhat naïve woman before she was kidnapped and experimented on and throughout the story it was like she recaptured a bit of that innocence without becoming a totally dependent, ridiculous ninny. Minka was the right balance of vulnerable and dangerous. She did a lot of growing from beginning to end and the final result was very satisfying.

Hybrids were introduced in a previous book and while they’re known to be humans who were changed using shifter (Humans born with naturally occurring genetic mutations that give them animal traits) DNA, there wasn’t any explanation of what the hybrids went through so I didn’t particularly feel bad for them. Now with Minka I got a front row seat to how difficult it is for hybrids to control the animal inside of them. The hybrids suddenly went from being out of control animals that needed to be put down to victims of greed that needed to be helped.

I swear Paige Tyler is a romance goddess because she balances out the paranormal with the contemporary to create an addictive read every time. But more than that she creates characters that are easy to bond with and even easier to love. Angelo wasn’t an obvious Alpha Male, he understood the value of being gentle and silent in order to help Minka come to terms with who she had become. He had an easy going charm that hid a lethal persona. Sometimes I forgot that he was a Special Forces officer and not someone who sat behind a desk for a living. And yes, he’s a total stud muffin who can cook! *cue dreamy sighs*

And while there were appearances by previous characters like Landon and Ivy, Her Fierce Warrior remained Minka’s journey to control and accept her new status in life. I did like the inclusion of characters that have yet to have their own stories told like Dr. Zarina Sokolov who has the same effect on hybrid Tanner as Angelo has on Minka. I think Tanner and Zarina’s story could end up being very interesting but it was Layla, Ivy’s shifter sister who is involved with Jayson, a wounded former soldier who is on a downward spiral due to his injuries that really piqued my interest. I really hope that Paige Tyler plans on keeping them as a couple because Jayson is easily one of the most interesting candidates for a hero I’ve read in a while. Plus, I can’t resist a tortured character and Jayson has cornered the market on that.

I still haven’t had a chance to read Landon and Ivy’s book (Bad me) so I hope I can get around to buying it soon so I can better understand those two but for now I look forward to more from this series and the next step in the conflict of who is funding the forced experimentation on people and why. Tyler knows how to hook readers and keep them coming back for more!

This author is new to me and I am really glad I got a chance to do this review. I was totally invested in his story and enjoyed his characters and the easy flow of his writing.

Wes Harris comes from a family of very successful people. His father is the head of the police department and his dream was to be a success in the same field. Due to an unfortunate series of events, Wes is sent by his father to a "special ops" division for one last chance to prove himself as a serious, capable officer. Feeling snubbed and a little undeserving of this "punishment," he arrives at the new division headquarters thinking he will get in and get out quickly. Little does he know that this assignment will change the way he looks at the world!

Forever there have been "witches" among us and Wes is about to discover a new way of "fighting" crime and protecting victims. Armed with only his gun and a good intuition concerning investigations, Wes is going to get a little more "training" than he bargained for. His assignment is to protect a young witch named Morgan from the "evil" sect of witches called Willas. He must work with the "good" witches called Davinas and of course he doesn't even believe they really exist. Next, enter shape shifters and he sees a whole new meaning to "bad guys"!

There was a little humor, morals, danger, romance and self discovery in the story and I thoroughly hope there will be more to come about Wes and Morgan. There are strong roots in the story that could lead to more exciting episodes! Well Done!

I give this book 4 1/2 sheep

Book Review: Her Wild Hero (X-Ops #3) by Paige Tyler

Her Wild Hero (X-Ops #3)
by Paige Tyler

Mass Market Paperback, 352 pages
May 5th 2015 by Sourcebooks Casablanca
Name: Kendra Carlsen
Rank: Trainer, Dept. of Covert Ops
Objective: Get out of the office and into the field
Name: Declan MacBride
Rank: Munitions Expert, Dept. of Covert Ops
Status: Bear Shifter
Objective: Protect Kendra at all costs

The steamy Costa Rican jungle brings out the bear in Declan MacBride when he and new operative Kendra Carlsen are ambushed. In the midst of relying on each other to survive, and fighting his explosive attraction to Kendra, this shifter is about to lose control.

If you haven’t read Paige Tyler yet, you don’t know what you’re missing because this lady rocks at writing exciting, passionate paranormal romance! The kind that got my blood pumping and took me completely away from my world and threw me into hers!

I remember Declan from the previous book and he hasn’t changed much, he’s still kind of solitary, a little grumpy and more than what he seems. Since it’s his turn in the spotlight though, there had to be something new and that came in the form of another side of the bear shifter: The side of him that was hopelessly in love with Kendra. Though he constantly reminded himself he was over her, it was clear he wasn’t, he knew she had been interested in someone else but he wasn’t cruel to her over it. A little distant maybe but he took his job of keeping her alive extremely serious. Did I mention Declan was charming too? He naturally tried to put Kendra at ease without lying to her about their dire circumstances. I tell you, I was in love with him within 40 pages!

Getting to know Declan more not only made me love him, it also made me dislike Kendra because Declan was amazing! I’m normally a wolf girl but dang, Declan was one seriously sexy bear. I spent the first half of Her Wild Hero wanting to kick Kendra’s butt for being so stupid and ignoring Declan’s interest in her. She was so focused on someone else, someone she knew she wasn’t a romantic match for.

Still, I have to grudgingly admit, I was thrilled at the way Kendra handled herself when her first field mission went south and burst into flames. She didn’t resemble and office employee at all! She was just at home with firing a gun as filing paperwork. No panicking, no hiding behind Declan, Kendra threw herself headlong into the fight and held off her share of enemies. She was, in a word: Prepared. So yeah, I have to admit that as female in a romantic suspense, she was on the same level as the men in the story, which of course, won her some major points. Even though she didn’t notice the hunky teddy bear in front of her for seven years.

The situation that Declan and Kendra found themselves in didn’t exactly provide much time or opportunities for romance but it did provide opportunities for them to really get to know each other better than they would have in any other case. I found that nothing short of a life or death situation would have gotten Declan to open up about himself, he was that stubborn.

Her Wild Hero to me was more uncivilized than the previous book. Declan and Kendra are far away from civilization and the people chasing them have no notion of fighting fair. I loved the new edge to the story, it was unapologetic and bloody almost from the beginning. It really was a fight to the death to survive, which is why I was so impressed with Kendra’s attitude throughout the whole thing. She was soldier strong, and intelligent.

While Her Wild Hero can be read as a standalone, it does form part of a larger story arc that began with the first book. I would suggest reading them in order so that you understand the bigger picture and the bigger threat these characters face by the end of this current book. I certainly can’t wait for the next one, or anything else by this author. She truly has me hooked!

4 bear loving sheep.
