Book Review: Forsaken (Fallen Siren #2.5) S.J. Harper

Forsaken (Fallen Siren #2.5)
S.J. Harper
Genre: Paranormal romance
Publisher: All Romance eBooks
Date of Publication: July 1, 2015
ISBN: 9781936387960
Word Count: 35,000
Cover Artist: Erin Dameron Hill
Join Agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong.

She protected him. He loved her.

They can trust one another with their lives, but what about their hearts?

Special Agent Emma Monroe is a Fallen Siren seeking redemption. Thousands of years ago, she was banished from Mount Olympus by Zeus and cursed by Demeter for failing to prevent the kidnapping of Persephone by Hades. Now she’s working for the FBI, seeking salvation while searching for and finding the missing. Her partner, Zack Armstrong, is a werewolf with a grievance of his own.

The former Black Ops sniper who once carried out a string of questionable assignments is atoning for his past. Ironically, Zack’s just discovered an important piece of his past has been magically wiped from his memory—an affair with Emma. It doesn’t matter she used the spell to save his life, that’s something he’ll never know. With trust eroded and love overshadowed by betrayal the only thing holding them together is the job.

When the son of multi-billionaire Roger Maitlan is kidnapped and his babysitter murdered in cold blood, Emma and Zack travel to New York to work the case. They go undercover, infiltrating a playground of private dungeons where those who are rich and powerful can live out fantasies without consequence. What they find is a conspiracy born of a twisted mind and fueled by greed. The clock is ticking. Will Zack and Emma be able to find the missing boy and their way back to one another?

The last book, Reckoning, left me unhappy with the state of Emma and Zack's relationship. I worried there would be a lot of angsty romance drama in Forsaken. Thankfully that was not the case. Both characters act like mature adults and worked through their issues.

This series is an urban fantasy with a good dose of police procedural, romance, and the paranormal, but the stories focus more on the cases Emma and Zack must solve. Forsaken has a bit more of the romance since they need to resolve issues from the end of the last book. I did roll my eyes at Emma having to infiltrate of BDSM club dressed as a Dom and using her sexual powers, in front of Zack of course. It felt like a plot device created just to throw the characters into a sexual interaction at a time when Zack wanted distance between them. Of course, it worked and they had crazy dirty back alley sex.

This is a very well written series with page turning action and a dark edge. Definitely worth checking out, but start with book one.

Review: Reckoning: A Fallen Siren Novel #2

3 1/2 Sheep

SharonS

Excerpt:

I’ve learned that it can take a lifetime to mend a broken heart. Right here, right now, I’m ready to stop suffering this one. To stop suffering altogether. I glance over at Zack who is sound asleep. He didn’t get any rest Friday night, thanks to Demeter. He was too preoccupied with feeling betrayed, manipulated, played the fool. Just as Demeter intended. Fuck Demeter. Fuck the world. I’m not giving up. I’m not giving in. I have a role to play, a duty to perform, a failure to make up for. It’s what I do, who I am.

A Siren is a Siren. A sexual creature, born of Gaia. I’m one of three, cursed by Demeter thousands of years ago for failing to protect Persephone. It’s for this I atone, for this I pay. It’s the reason I work for the FBI and search for the missing. It’s the reason I avoid love at all costs. Finding the missing brings me closer to redemption.

Finding love? I swallow hard. That always ends in ruin and death. Once again, my gaze drifts to my partner, Zack, a dark, rugged werewolf who was formerly, and quite secretly, a badass black ops assassin. Also, formerly, my lover. We met during a case in Charleston about a year and a half ago. The attraction was instant, giving into it seemingly safe. The assignment was to be temporary after all. He was to go his way. I was to go mine. There was to be no contact between us. And there wasn’t until he transferred to San Diego, to my unit. Until he became my partner both in and out of bed. Until we fell in love and I made the only choice I could. I took his memories to save his life.

“Can I get you anything else?” the flight attendant asks quietly.

I hand her my empty cup and shake my head.

She moves on down the aisle.

I transfer the case file I’ve been perusing onto the seat between Zack and me along with my laptop and cell phone. I’ve read the dossier on real estate mogul and philanthropist Roger Maitlan a half-dozen times along with what little is known about the kidnapping of his seven-year-old son, Robby. Maitlan’s missing child is the reason we’re on our way to the Big Apple. The reason our boss, Jimmy Johnson, denied the request Zack made for transfer just yesterday morning.

I notice the light above the forward lavatory has turned from red to green. I consider waking Zack for a fraction of a second before deciding against. I’m agile, limber, and frankly not looking forward to once again facing his ire. I quietly unbuckle, lift up the arm separating the window and middle seats, then slide over. I stand in so much as I can, considering the outcropping of overhead bins, and turn to face him. Left hand on the middle seat, I lift my right leg up and over his. He doesn’t flinch. There’s no alteration in his breathing. My toe touches the ground, and I begin to shift my weight to the foot that’s now firmly planted in the aisle. His hand brushes my thigh, his eyes open.

He sits up straighter in his chair. “You could have woken me and asked me to move.” His tone is irritable, bordering on accusing.

I avoid eye contact, avoid his touch. “Let’s pretend I did,” I say before slipping out of the row and making my way toward the front of the plane. I feel his eyes on me. Never did I imagine viewing an airplane lavatory as a refuge. I take care of the most immediate needs first, then I wash my hands. When I reach for the paper towels, I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I have to admit, I look a little worse for wear. Considering what I’ve been through in the past twenty-four hours, that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

This time yesterday Zack and I were staging the rescue of ten missing girls, all young, blonde virgins—pawns in a power play between two ruling vampire factions. The losing side led by the now dead Southern vampire King, Philippe Lamont. The winner? Kallistos Kouros. My betrayer, my savior, and now the Sovereign of both the West and the South. Kallistos and I had been sharing a bed for the better part of six months. The no-strings-attached relationship worked for us both—the vampire who made no demands, except for the most exquisite sexual ones, and the Siren who could fulfill those demands without sacrificing her heart. Only in the end my heart did suffer as I watched him take the lives of humans to ensure his position, grow his kingdom, and increase his power. I’d like to condemn him, but I can’t. Kallistos told me what to expect of him more times than I could count. And I have to admit he’s delivered supremely on both his promise to be there when needed and to disappoint. If he hadn’t healed me two nights

ago, I’d be gone. Not dead, Demeter would never have allowed that, forced to move on to another life. Problem is, I’m not done with this one.

I lean closer to the mirror and study my appearance, seeking assurance that the two spells I pay my best friend Liz for are still firmly in place. The first, a reverse glamour that hides my true appearance and furnishes me with the wholesome, plain-Jane facade I’ve become so accustomed to seeing. The second, a dampening spell that diminishes both my innate powers of seduction and the nifty little side effect that makes me the most reliable lie detector ever. I realize that Liz, who is not only the baddest witch this side of the Mississippi, but my touchstone when it comes to matters of the heart, doesn’t know what happened in the last couple days between Kallistos and me, between Zack and me, between Demeter and me—that I’m on my way to New York, that everything is different, my life changed.

I make a half-hearted effort to smooth down my hair, which is long, dark, and pulled back into a simple ponytail. I can’t help noticing that my skin, normally fair and unblemished, is paler than usual. Not because of a lack of makeup. I never wear makeup. No mascara. No lip-gloss. Nothing. I reach up and pinch my cheeks. It doesn’t help. The inside of my lower eyelid contains only the barest hint of pink. I’m anemic. I’ve lost too much blood. Not during the mission. Though there was plenty of blood shed last night, none of it was mine. My near death experience came this morning at the hand of my favorite vindictive goddess, Demeter. After she betrayed me. After Zack discovered my betrayal of him.

Zack.

Book Review: Revenge & the Zombie Apocalypse (Zombie Apocalypse #3) by Chelsea Luna Bellingeri

Revenge & the Zombie Apocalypse (Zombie Apocalypse #3)
by Chelsea Luna Bellingeri

176 pages
May 14, 2015

Revenge & the Zombie Apocalypse is the epic conclusion to the Zombie Apocalypse Trilogy. The zombie outbreak has ravished the country for over two weeks. Rachel and her friends are at their breaking point. They have suffered casualties, unspeakable horrors, murder and betrayal.

To survive, the battered group must continue on through the great expanse of the American wasteland. Their only hope lies at Camp Freedom Two in Las Vegas—the last major survivor camp still safeguarded by the military. The long journey from Michigan to Nevada is filled with the undead. Danger lurks in every twist of the road. Will the group survive? Can they work together and overcome their struggles?

In the final book of the Zombie Apocalypse series the group is still trying to find a way to a safe zone. The final one still standing is Camp Freedom Two in Las Vegas which is a long way from Michigan. Rachel and Adam grow closer as the group is forced to kill to survive. The group can’t seem to catch a break. Along the way the group meets up with some new friends and foes. Survival is there only goal at this point and sometimes that doesn’t even seem like an option.

I enjoy Luna’s books but was a little disappointed with this final book. The book has some great plot twists that you don’t see coming which made it a great page turner. I would have liked the ending to have more of a resolution than it did but still recommend this book as well as her New England Witch Series as well.

Book Review: Unfinished Muse (Mt. Olympus Employment Agency #1) by R.L. Naquin

Unfinished Muse (Mt. Olympus Employment Agency #1)
by R.L. Naquin

241 pages
Published July 20th 2015
Wynter Greene is a chronic quitter—in work, in life, and in love. When she quits a job, a boyfriend, and a seemingly minor craft project all in one day, the dormant deity blood in her veins triggers a Welcome Package from the gods. A talking—and singing—houseplant named Phyllis bullies Wynter into taking a job at the Mt. Olympus Employment Agency.

Stuck with a job in the Muse department, Wynter discovers that helping others finish what they start isn’t easy, especially for someone who can’t seem to finish anything of her own. And how is Wynter supposed to focus on anything when that guy from the Dreams and Nightmares department keeps distracting her with his rippling muscles and magnetic stare?

Wynter needs to figure her job out soon. Each failure is a tick mark on her record, and if she continues to miss her deadlines, she’ll be reassigned to the Underworld as a dog walker.

And scooping poop for a giant three-headed dog is nobody’s ideal career.

The seeds of creative ideas and story lines must love the fertile brain of R.L. Naquin. Another great work of the 'flight lantastic'. Or is that 'light fantastic'? Either way, I believe she would do well writing script for the "Dr. Who" series (one of my favorites by the way).

Using a normal 'talking' houseplant to usher in the not normal world that is to become Wynter's new life was brilliant on the comic front. As in her "Hidden" series she takes a main character that is quirky but realistic and gives her a paranormal flavor that is easy to digest and tastes good as you take bite after bite until you realize it is gone. It leaves you sorry that you consumed it so fast!

Wynter is a character that just can't find her calling in life and seems to be down and out in her luck and personal life. She finally meets the criteria for her assignment at Mount Olympus Employment Agency. Being given the position of 'muse' her assignment is to motivate her given clients, The last job on earth she thinks she is qualified for. But failure here could land her in the underworld. Many obstacles and disgruntled coworkers seem out to ensure her failure. With the help of her houseplant "Phyllis", she is determined to complete her assignments on time and on her terms. Will that keep her from the underworld? Or will it put her on the fast track to work for Hades himself?

Unlike Naquin's "Hidden" stories, this read was a little more "vanilla", a little slower in the middle and the ending came with fewer neatly tied up answers. It left you knowing (or hoping) more installments will follow and hopefully soon. I am anxious to see where this story goes and would definitely recommend it for a fun, motivational read! As a standalone book my rating would be different but as a series this has a great potential.

I give this 4 a'muse'ing sheep.

Rachel’s head is packed with an outrageous amount of useless Disney trivia. She is terrified of thunder, but not of lightning, and often recites the Disneyland dedication speech during storms to keep herself calm. She finds it appalling that nobody from Disney has called yet with her castle move-in date.

Originally from Northern California, she has a tendency to move every few years, resulting in a total of seven different states and a six-year stint in England. Currently, she’s planning her next grand adventure. Rachel has one heroic husband, two genius kids, a crazy-catlady starter kit, and an imaginary dog named Waffles.

She doesn’t have time for a real dog.

Her Sinful Angel – Excerpt

What the fuck was he doing?

Lucifer stormed down the hall, shadows streaming from his fingers as he snarled through his fangs, torn between seeking out something to take out his anger on and returning to the room where Nina waited for him.

He reached the towering vestibule of the fortress before stopping dead.

The floating staircases that connected the floors of his home blurred and his fingers relaxed, uncurling to hang limp.

Nina.

She had said her name was Nina.

He’d had many women as guests in his castle, but never once had he known their name. It felt dangerous. Intimate.

With nothing more than a single word, she had entranced him.

Enslaved him.

He had stood there staring at her, pondering her name and running it around his head, discovering it had a pleasing ring to it.

One he could imagine uttering at the height of pleasure, when he was lost in the heat of passion with her, entangled and entwined in his bed.

Another growl curled from his lips and he managed another step before stopping again, his feet refusing to cooperate.

Refusing to take him another inch further from her.

Nina.

Fuck, he had never thought anyone or anything could have power over him again, but it seemed that single innocent word and the female it belonged to had somehow mastered him.

He snarled and forced himself to take another step, increasing the distance between them and denying the pressing need to turn around and go back to the room where she waited. He wanted to watch her, study her, until the end of time. As dangerous as it was to admit it, she fascinated him.

No female before her had captivated him as she did.

No female had a perfect blend of light and darkness inside them as she did.

Both the light and the dark pulled him towards her and he was powerless to resist. His feet shifted, not forwards this time but back a step, bringing him closer to her again.

He cursed, spitting the vilest one imaginable in the demonic tongue, and the ground shook. The gilded bone chandeliers hanging from the staircases that cut across the enormous space in the vestibule trembled, causing the light to flicker and even fade in some places.

What the fuck was he doing?

Was this all part of Mihail’s plan?

Had the bastard tracked down the most beautiful, pure yet tainted female on purpose?

The angel must have known that she would lure him to her, that the seed of darkness that lived within her, the pain that had left its mark on her soul, would be irresistible to him.

But Lucifer had slept with many females who had been tainted by darkness, and he had never felt a pull towards them. He had never desired them.

They had been a means to an end, a method of producing an heir, a vessel that he could use to leave Hell and wreak havoc on Heaven without risking releasing the princes from their prison.

Nina was so much more to that.

He pressed a hand to his chest, clawing at his suit jacket as a weight settled behind his ribs, an aching heaviness that he hadn’t felt in a long time.

An emotion he had never wanted to feel again.

Loneliness.

Even a king could know loneliness and despair born of fear that he would forever be alone, and it was a bitter and cutting sort of loneliness. It was a loneliness experienced even when surrounded by those who served him. It was despair that ate away at him even when he wasn’t aware of it.

And he had never been aware of it before now.

He had always believed himself happy here, in his kingdom, a ruler of all that he could see. An entire realm was under his command and every creature in it bowed to him. He had a million under his yoke, willing to die for him.

A million servants.

Not one equal.

How long had he felt this way? How long had this feeling been festering inside him like a disease, creating a rotten core?

Lucifer looked back over his shoulder, down the corridor towards Nina’s room. How was it he felt as if she could cure him, could scrape out the parts that had gone bad and replace those that had wasted away inside him?

That tiny flicker of light in his soul mocked him with the answer.

Because he was feeling again.

Erin had been the catalyst, the one who had reawakened emotions in him, and he had tried to keep them under control and vanquish them. She had made him weak and he hadn’t fought hard enough, and now he was paying for it. He was paying for allowing them to gain a foothold inside him once again.

He should have put an end to them when he had first become aware of them rather than letting them grow.

Lucifer laughed at that.

There were a great many things he should have done differently in his long life, and none of them he could change now. The past was for angels as it was for mortals, an indelible path that nothing could alter. He had come to terms with that a great many centuries ago, but it still didn’t seem to stop him from dwelling on the mistakes he had made. As if mulling over them would fix them. It changed nothing. He could only move forwards, keep walking tall and keep fighting, and perhaps one day he would have the vengeance he desired and everything he had suffered, everything he had endured, would be worth it.

One day.

His lips curled into a wicked smile.

One day the entire world would tremble at his feet.

The ground shook beneath him, rattling the chandeliers again, the vibrations running up his legs as they grew stronger. Black shadows swirled from his fingertips and curled around his arms, and his shoulder blades itched, his wings desiring the freedom he rarely gave to them. He snarled as his mood blackened, pleasing thoughts of standing atop a mountain and seeing the puny mortals and the bastard angels quivering in fear as his legions decimated them running through his mind. The quake followed his mood, violently shaking the fortress, and he grinned as a crack forked across the floor of the hallway like a lightning bolt.

A shriek shattered the hold the darkness had on him.

The fortress settled and the shadows dissipated.

Nina.

Lucifer was striding along the corridor in her direction before he even realised he was moving, his swift steps carrying him back to her. The floor repaired itself beneath his feet, the crack sealing and returning the stone to how perfect it had been before his temper had slipped its leash.

He focused on himself and employed a power he hadn’t used in millennia.

The ability to mask his presence, making him invisible to mortal eyes.

Fear flowed from ahead of him, rippling over him like a stream, and he almost cursed before he caught himself and told himself that he didn’t care that he had frightened the mortal female.

The door to her room was open and for a moment he feared she would have left her sanctuary, but then he reached it and spotted her inside the spacious apartment. Relief swept through him, a curious emotion he hadn’t experienced in a long time and didn’t want to experience now. He didn’t want to feel anything.

Yet he found himself standing on the threshold of her room feeling a myriad of emotions that tore him in a thousand directions, none of which he should have been contemplating. He should have been moving on now that he had seen she was well and unhurt. He should have been heading out to the prison to deal with his business there, using it to eradicate the feelings Nina stirred in him.

He shouldn’t be transfixed by the sight of her as she stood near the red velvet couch, her hands tucked against her chest, clutching the silky white material and pulling it tight across her breasts.

He shouldn’t be fascinated by how her heart settled as he stood there and her courage returned, bravery he had noticed in her when he had come to see her and bring her food, intending to question her again. She had been stronger, had radiated alluring confidence in his presence, and had even questioned him.

She had asked for his name.

No one had ever asked for his name before.

And he meant no one.

When he had served Heaven, all had known it. When he had been cast into Hell, none had cared about it. When he had risen to rule this realm, they had given him a new name. The Devil.

In all the millennia he had been alive, not a single soul had actually bothered to ask him for his name.

He cocked his head as he watched her moving around the room. Mortals were weak, but she had strength in her. It wasn’t physical. She was as frail as all mortals in that respect. It was emotional, and he had no doubt that it had been born from the ashes of her past and her pain.

Lucifer leaned against the doorframe, folded his arms across his chest, and studied her, the world around them falling away as he sought answers to the questions that refused to leave his mind.

What had happened to her?

What was it about her that fascinated him?

He had never really taken the time to study mortal nuances, not in all the years he had walked among her kind. They had never interested him before, and they shouldn’t interest him now.

Yet she fascinated him.

She carefully brought her tea cup to her lips, took a sip, and then lowered it again as she walked around the room. A drop of liquid remained on her lower lip, trembling there, luring his gaze to her mouth. He stared at it for long seconds, losing track of time, before he noticed something else.

A tiny streak of a pale silvery scar on her chin, close to the left corner of her lower lip.

The longer he stared at that little mark, the stronger his hunger to kiss that spot grew inside him, obliterating his awareness of anything but that scar and her lips. Fuck, he wanted to press a lingering kiss to that scar and breathe her in. He wanted to feel her tremble beneath his lips and sense the anticipation in her, the stirrings of desire and need, a hunger that only he could satisfy.

He wanted to take the bold and dangerous leap to kissing her.
