Sheep Book Review: WAR ETERNAL: ANGELS’ WHISPERS by J.F. Cain

War Eternal: Book I: Angels' Whispers
by J.F. Cain
April 7, 2017
Pages: 355
Genre: Fantasy/Adventure/Romance
Alex Meyers, a dynamic, global entrepreneur, has an advantage that no other human has ever had: he is protected by Aranes, the Superior of the Angels. While he is skiing, he dies in an avalanche, but his all-powerful protector breaks one of the ethereal world’s most important Rules and brings him back to life. Alex falls head over heels in love with the beautiful Angel, who appears to him in human form. But she disappears just as suddenly as she had appeared.

While he searches for Aranes, Alex discovers her true identity and that he actually might be the high-ranking Celestial Abaddon, who is mentioned in the Revelations prophecy as the one who will defeat Lucifer.

The man who fate has thrust among the world’s superpowers is now living a nightmare. He wants to evade Lucifer’s pursuit, find out who he truly is and once again see the only being he has ever loved. And the only way to do it is to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Angels’ Whispers is the beginning of an epic tale set in modern times. The eternal war between Light and Darkness is at a critical turning point: Angels and Demons, invisible to mortal beings, battle for dominance in the physical world, while Guardians, Vampires and Werewolves, who live among the humans, find themselves on opposing sides in a deadly power game.

Ok, let's just get the small stuff out of the way right off the bat. The cover is sexy/cool very wooshy sounding music feels. I liked it. Creepy guy in the back? Yeah, liked him too. Vampires? Duh, always in. ALSO, I had to try this one since it came out on my bday. Sold. Cha-ching! So after all that nonsense does it help that these petty things paid off in the end because the book was damn good???? Sure does!

Who's this author? Where did they pop out from? Why am I already asking so many questions in a gosh dang book review? Blame it on the caffeine that I am a slave for but holy-vampire-ghosts Batman this author did one hell of a job selling me! Every little detail is crisp and fresh, practically jumping off the page and into reality. Where is the line between real and fake because I had no idea at times in this one. You haunt my dreams!

Angels don't usually rock my world, however, these made me want to jump teams and root for the Heavenly hotties. And yes, they are hella hot in this one! (I take it back Vampires, I will always be team undead)

War Eternal had everything I wanted in a juicy PNR, action/adventure, awesome characters, amazing world building, attention to detail without shoving it down my throat, sexy as hell men and women plus all the romance I could sink my fangs into.

All around this was one of the best reads in 2018, but the year is early so I really hope it can hold up! I'm reading more from this author for sure.

I don't pull out the 5 Sheep review for just anything.....

Excerpt:
When they had left the road and its noise far enough behind them, Alex jerked to a stop. He turned to Aranes, let her hand go and grabbed her by the arms.

“Who are you? Or should I ask what are you?”

They Angel looked him steadily in the eye, not speaking. She had come to the physical plane to prepare him for what was to follow and this was the best way to show him that there were some things that couldn’t be said.

“What do you want from me?” Alex continued. “Has some competitor put you up to approaching me?”

“No, it’s nothing like that,” Aranes said hurriedly to allay his undue worry.

The storm that had risen in Alex’s eyes seemed to calm and the frothy-wave-like silver streaks in his irises began to roll gently against their deep blue backdrop.

“Fine! Then could you explain some things to me?”

Besides everything else she had to do, the Angel also had to leave hints about her nature. Soon her protégé would replay their discussions and would analyze her every word to reach some conclusions.

“I can’t right now,” she replied, capturing his gaze in hers so that she could send him non-verbal messages.

Her calm expression and steady gaze made Alex wonder. She seemed sincere. But why didn’t she give him a specific answer?

“What’s going on?” he asked, confusion written all over his face. “Tell me, what should I think? You appear out of nowhere, drag me out of an avalanche, treat me as if I’m special to you and then drop me, only to appear out of nowhere again, knowing that I’ve been looking for you. Don’t you also think that all this is a little strange?”

“Yes, it is,” the Angel agreed. “Please, be patient. Soon you’ll have the answers you need.”

Alex would not give in.

“I’d rather have them now, starting with who you are.”

“That question will be answered soon, too,” Aranes replied and rested her palm in the middle of his chest. “Look into my eyes, Alex, and tell me. Do you believe I would ever harm you?”

He looked bewilderedly down at her hand on his chest. It felt as if a wave of warmth passed from her palm into his body, filling him with an indescribable sweetness and wonderful emotions unknown to him until now. He looked up and searched her unearthly eyes for an answer to this transcendental feeling, and found much more. In her effort to calm him and win his trust, the Angel unveiled her soul and let him see how she felt.

Alex saw her eyes overflowing with love and was stunned.

This woman seemed to adore him. It couldn’t be! She knew him so little. To be precise, she didn’t know him at all. You don’t know her either but you’re crazy about her, he thought in response.

“No,” he admitted, now calm. “But I don’t like all this mystery. How did you know I’ve been looking for you, and why doesn’t the cabin’s owner know you?”

“There’s always an explanation for everything”, Aranes replied, her gaze fixed on his. “Isn’t that so?”

“Why don’t you just tell me who you are? Are you really called Theodora? What’s your last name?”

“I don’t have a last name.”

“That’s not possible. Everybody has one,” Alex insisted gently.

“I don’t, because I don’t need it.”

Aranes let a brief moment of silence elapse to give him time to think.

He was looking at her in puzzlement. He didn’t know what to think. He didn’t know anyone without a last name. Where had this woman come from?

“Alex,” the Angel went on. “You have an extremely well-developed intuition. Listen to it and stay calm, no matter what happens.”

Her mention of his intuition caught him completely unawares. Alarm bells started ringing in his head again.

“What’s going to happen? And how do you know about my intuition?” he asked with a bewildered and at the same time suspicious look.

Forced to provide only that information which his mental state could handle, Aranes didn’t answer his question. She went on:

“There are things you cannot see, but can sense. Don’t try to explain everything using reason.”

“If I don’t use reason I’ll go mad!” Alex said with a measure of the irritation that lay dormant inside him and just wouldn’t be expressed in its true form.

He was annoyed with himself for not protesting, and for letting her put his head through the wringer without asking for anything more than the necessary explanations—and yet he was happy they were together. It was crazy, is what it was!

“Being calm and collected in times of crisis is characteristic of a superior nature, and I believe you are one of them,” Aranes told him, wanting to prepare him for what would happen in the immediate future.

Superior in nature was the last thing that Alex felt right then. Reason was bombarding his mind with questions and warnings, and there he stood, helpless to react. He wondered at his calm. He should normally have freaked out when she mentioned his intuition and with everything else she told him. But his will seemed to have surrendered to a hypnotic suggestion. What held him in its grip?

Not having any clue about the supernatural powers used on him, the answer was simple: her exquisite face, captivating scent, divine body and basically everything about her, her intellectual qualities included of course, that drove him delirious with love and made him want to make her his at all costs. It was a good excuse for his passiveness, otherwise why would he be acting like a mentally retarded adult? It wasn’t like him at all.

Book Review: Demon Soul (DarkWorld: SoulTracker #4) by T.G. Ayer

November 30, 2017
270 pages
Book 4 in the SoulTracker Series

Mel’s adventure continues as she heads to New Orleans on the hunt for the witchdoctor who put the evil curse on her. But finding him proves harder than she expected and she has to dodge assassins and evil minions alike.
Her to do list doesn’t get any shorter either with Samuel and Ari, the Dark One and the Ni’amh to consider.
Hopefully she can stay alive long enough to save everyone, including herself.

Demon Soul is the fourth installment in the Soul Tracker series, a series I’ve been following since book one. The series centres on Mel Morgan, a remarkably talented mage capable of jumping between dimensions, as well as astral projection. She can track beings using their DNA ‘threads’ and has turned her talents into a business tracking the missing with her partners Steph and Drake. Recently, Mel’s talents have been severely hindered by a poltergeist parasite sent to drain her power. Mel’s health is dramatically deteriorating and she’s in a race against time to save herself and those she cares for.

Soul Tracker has been an entertaining series. It’s immensely creative and Mel is a superb heroine. My criticisms of this series stand, however. The plot is overly complex and there is simply too much going on. I don’t want to reveal the series’ numerous plots for new readers; suffice it to say, it’s quite the catalogue. For someone on death’s door, Mel has a seemingly endless appetite for danger and adventure. While I admire her devotion to those around her, I have a hard time accepting how dire Mel’s circumstances are when she continues to fight, jump, and project. I keep waiting for some advancement in the larger plots, but instead, readers are constantly introduced to smaller plot lines. As a spin-off series to Ayer’s larger Dark World work, characters and relationships are often tied to the other series. I haven’t read Dark World. As such, I’m often confused by the cameo appearances of Dark World characters.

I’m not saying I won’t continue with this series, I’ve invested a lot of time in Mel Morgan. I am curious to see how Ayer plans to adequately unite these countless loose threads; a formidable challenge to be sure.

Book Review: Snow Maiden (Enchanted Lands Romance) by Amanda V. Shane

paranormal romance, cover, Snow Maiden, fairytale
Snow Maiden (Enchanted Lands Romance)
by Amanda V. Shane
December 1, 2017
228 pages
A commoner and the outcast of her village...Nika is forced to flee her home to keep the dark secret of her birth. When she is hunted by a rugged Northman, she finds herself lost in a land of spells and curses. His kisses start to melt her cold, lonely heart, her secrets are laid bare and she finds herself in a magic war for the man and the kingdom she loves.

King of a cursed and ravaged kingdom...when Vasilli first lays eyes on Nika stealing bread at a fair, he knows he has to have the fair haired beauty. The legends surrounding his lands tell of a snow maiden who will break the curse of the Northern Kingdom but he wants Nika for his own.

From a land of winter, ice and snow comes a tale of enchantment and romance. Mages and sorceresses, omens and curses - this spellbinding grownup fairytale is a story of magic in an ancient land and a legendary love that will heat up even the coldest winter night.

Inspired by the Russian fairytale The Snow Maiden.

This story involves some intimate scenes and adult situations. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

Snow Maiden is a standalone book written with fairytale flair. Nika, a young commoner of mysterious birth, has been an outcast her whole life. Her fair hair and blue eyes mark her as other; features associated with a malevolent entity from the neighbouring forest. When her grandmother dies, Nika is forced to flee her village or face certain death at the hands of the villagers who believe her to be a harbinger of their demise. And so Nika sets off, penniless and without a plan. But the intervention of benevolent supernatural beings, as well as the protection of a rugged Northern king, provide Nika with a chance at survival, self-discovery, and happiness.

Snow Maiden is a charming story and Shane’s first book. The setting is abundantly creative; the woodland lore beautifully established and described. The premise of the tale -- King Vasilli must find a way to break the curse threatening the survival of his fledgling Northen kingdom -- isn’t enormously original and the characters are largely based on types. However, Shane takes a simple foundation and builds a wholly enchanting tale. The romance between Nika and Vasilli develops at a delicious pace, greatly enhancing reader engagement. I was thoroughly entertained and devoured the book in one day. Kindle Unlimited subscribers can currently read Snow Maiden for free.

About the Author:
Amanda V. Shane is a Colorado native and fully admits to being a library dork growing up. To this day, she loves the smell of book paper on an almost fetish level (okay, maybe not, but that gives you a peek into the dark and twisted mind of this author). One of her first book romances came at the age of nine when, in a far back aisle, she found the story of King Arthur and was entranced by the blood purple canvas cover with gold leafing (she likes shiny things.)
Since then, she’s been hooked on stories with magic, mythical beings, daring heroes and, of course, desperate romance.
She writes paranormal and fantasy romance from her home where she lives with her family and a Bassett hound who she routinely has to fight for the “soft” end of the couch to set up with her laptop. She likes chocolate, wine, coffee and kids, in no particular order.

Double Movie Review: Bright: A Netflix Original Movie (2017)

Bright: A Netflix Original Movie
Release Date: December 22, 2017
Director: David Ayer
Writer: Max Landis
Music by David Sardy
Netflix

Cast: Will Smith, Joel Edgarton, Noomi Rapace
TV-MA | 1h 57min
Genre: Action, Crime, Fantasy
In an alternate present day, humans, orcs, elves, and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Two police officers, one a human, the other an orc, embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which, in the wrong hands, could destroy everything.

Pamela K. Kinney's Review
I give Bright 3 ½ sheep.

To me, this urban fantasy is a would-be Men in Black meets Bad Boys meets Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, shown not on the big screen, but on Netflix. Critics haven’t received it well, while Netflix users either love it or hate it.

This action-thriller was directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) and it follows two cops from very different backgrounds  Ward (Will Smith) is human and Jakoby (Joel Edgerton) is an orc. The two men are fighting their own personal differences as well as enemies in their own police force and from human and orc civilians. When they find a young elf woman they need to work together to protect her and a mythical magical wand. If the wand falls into the wrong hands, a Dark Lord, once defeated by a legendary orc, can be brought back and the world can be destroyed.

The film fell a bit short of the genre themes it referenced: fantasy, cop drama, and social commentary. The reason could be all the missing backstory that might show us why this is happening and why we should fear Leilah’s wand wanted by everyone—some for good reasons, more for the wrong reasons—and so forth. Netflix released a documentary that explains this world and its history of magic. Filling in some details, making the events more understandable. You can watch it at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRRoAZcwQMY
Too bad this wasn’t put out before the film was released, or even a short bit included in the show—like where the Dark Lord is defeated by the orc.

I thought Will Smith was too tough, more stone than human. On occasion, he would say something intended to be funny but fell short. I did enjoy Joel Edgarton’s role as the orc cop. And Noomi Rapace who played the bad-ass, vicious elf, Leilah, did the villain role well. I admit being curious why she wanted the Dark Lord brought back instead of taking the power for herself.

SharonS Review
3 1/2 "Bright" Sheep

I agree with the things Pamela pointed out. I enjoyed the movie. There were some well-done action scenes but...and I can't believe I'm gonna say this...there were too many action scenes! They tried to shove in way too much action. It was exhausting. Some of that time could have been used to fill in some of those backstory gaps instead of putting them in the YouTube special. And on the subject of shoving... I get the writers wanted to address the very real social issue of discrimination but they were too heavy handed with it.

There is a pivotal scene where Ward and Jakoby are confronted by some crooked cops and it was one of the best drama/action scenes I've seen. It had a strong emotional impact.

They are making a sequel which I will definitely be watching. I want to know more about Ward's background and see some more elves, RAWR!
