TV Show Review: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinters Tale

This is episode 11 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 1 on Netflix. There will be a review of the TV series as a whole this coming Friday so be sure to check that out!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Chapter Eleven: A Midwinter's Tale time:
TV-14
Runtime: 1h
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Horror
Cast: Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo
As the winter solstice approaches, Sabrina orchestrates an emotional seance with serious consequences, and Susie's merry plans turn menacing.

Tis the season for burning the Yule log, holding seances, and holiday specials! That's how they do it in Greendale, anyway.

Given the last time we saw a Christmasy Sabrina she was dressed as Santa to rescue Salem from an over-enthusiastic kid (this may have involved a spatula and a Neil Diamond box set), I was curious to see what Chilling Adventures would bring to the holiday table.

Set after the first season, I think this could somewhat function on its own, though if someone is completely new to this version it may not be best to start here since it's more of an extension of season one vs a standalone special. Sabrina is feeling the separation from Harvey (and her self-inflicted separation from her friends), as well as missing her mother. Zelda is occupied with a new baby and the warning to keep the Yule log burning. Miss Wardwell is wondering why she's not been called back to the pit. Suzie is working as an elf, and the others are somewhat on the periphery of those plots.

That's really one of the things I noticed. I'm used to holiday specials where the stakes are low, it's all about the feels, and everyone is pretty much all there together. Not so here, and it makes it more in line with the show. It's almost refreshing.

The Yule log goes out during an ill-timed seance in an attempt to connect Sabrina to her mom to find out why she's in Limbo. Chaos ensues.

The good: Dark Christmas is hard to do well without coming off as cartoony or bitter. For me, the decision to lean into folklore hits all the right buttons. I'll even ease up on nitpicking for how they interpret some of it, because it's so refreshing to see the Yule Lads and Gryla used for once. Seriously, I gasped and cheered. There are a few other fun reveals that are delightfully creepy, but I'll let you find those on your own.

Like everything else, Sabrina tries to help Harvey, tries to help her mother, and it ends up blowing up in her face. Add Suzie's plot to it, and the result is cozy, shadowy madness that never gets too goofy or cynical. I feel for Sabrina, I get her frustration as all the threads of her life feel like they're unravelling. I kinda want to smack Harvey upside the head, but I like that the show has chosen to let their relationship play out, bumps and all, and not use the mind wipe mcguffin the 90s version repeatedly used. This is far more interesting.

We also get to see how Susie and Rosalind deal with Sabrina's powers and lifestyle, which is something that was never really explored in depth before. I dig it.

All of the characters go through a bit of a ride, and I feel like this probably sets things up for season 2. This also increases the universe in that it shows creatures existing in or near Greendale that have nothing to do per say with the local covens.

The bad: My only real gripe is that some things move a little fast, making some (like the Weird Sisters) feel a little out of character. I'm not totally sure if this is a pacing thing or character progression. It works for the episode but does feel a little odd.

The ick: Same as the rest of the series. You need to keep a sense of humor with the satany bits, and if seeing the franchise go darker doesn't appeal, this won't change your mind. There was nothing here that put things over the top for me, and no huge gore in this ep, so it is a decent look at the show without it being too crazy pants, if those are deal breakers for anyone.

Overall, this adds to the series and enhances what we've already seen. It gives a nice Yuletide glow without being overly sweet. It's nice to have a holiday show where things happen and impact the overall season, so hopefully this won't be a one-off thing. There's also a definite holiday season feel - this isn't an attempt to make fun of traditions, but to expand them. There are plenty of fun little moments and the final scene had me snickering. If you're into the show, you definitely need to see this episode. Even if you aren't, it's a fun romp with a great story amd solid performances from the cast. A fun watch for something a little bit different this season.

Book Review: Such Violent Delights: A Holiday Paranormal Romance Anthology

Such Violent Delights: A Holiday Paranormal Romance Anthology
November 13, 2018
573 pages
by S.L. Jennings, Stacey Marie Brown, Chantal Fernando, Jessica Florence, Amelia Hutchins, Kim Loraine, Amo Jones, Graceley Knox, Anne Malcom, Alice K. Wayne, D.D. Miers
Eleven all new stories from twelve top paranormal romance authors. From Heaven to Hell, fae worlds, superheroes, and even through the looking glass, these holiday-themed short stories bring a whole new meaning to the 12 days of Christmas.

All proceeds from the sale of the anthology will be donated to charity.

Featuring:
Stacey Marie Brown – Descending Into Madness (A Winterland Tale)
Chantal Fernando – Suck Me
Jessica Florence – Hero Holiday Trials
Amelia Hutchins – Oh, Holy Knight (Wicked Knights Series)
S.L. Jennings – Devil’s Darling (A Se7en Sinners Short)
Amo Jones – DYAVOL
Knox & Miers – Deck the Demons (A Halfblood Huntress Prequel)
Kim Loraine – On A Cold Winter’s Night
Anne Malcom – Buried Destiny
R. Scarlett – The Winter Solstice
Alice K. Wayne – The Nutcrackers (A Breed Christmas Short)

Such Violent Delights is a holiday anthology featuring 11 short works of paranormal romance. I read six of the 11 pieces. Although Christmas, or variations of the holiday, are a feature in each of the stories I read, it wasn’t a crucial element to any them. I think this anthology could be enjoyed any time of the year. Admittedly, I haven’t read many anthologies and was pleasantly surprised by this collection. I was entertained and intrigued and found a new author of interest.

Favourite Story
I was originally drawn to the anthology because it features Amelia Hutchins, author of the Fae Chronicles and Playing with Monsters series, both of which are favourites of mine. Her Violent Delights contribution is the story Oh Holy Knight, an off-the-charts sexy tale about a highly tumultuous connection. The story takes place in the Fae Chronicles universe and features appearances of favourite Fae Chronicles characters. The story is a teaser for a forthcoming summer 2019 release in the author’s new Templar Knights series. I can’t wait. If this story is any indication, this series will be amazing.

Most Compelling
My new author discovery is S.L. Jennings whose story Devil’s Darling is also featured in the anthology. The story is an in-between-books short story in her Se7en Sinners series. Devil’s Darling was wholly intriguing. I’m absolutely hooked on her Lucifer character and cannot wait to dive into the whole series. Lucifer is a deliciously dark figure with immense wit and power. Se7en Sinners has shot to the top of my TBR for the new year.

Cute, Creative & Captivating
Graceley Knox and D.D. Miers’ anthology feature is a series prequel called Deck the Demons. I was intrigued by this work as I’d started D.D. Miers’ Dark Summoner series years ago. While I hadn’t followed up on the series, I really liked the first book. I liked the format for Deck the Demons. The prequel to the authors’ Halfblood Huntress series gives the reader a starting point for the work without revealing anything to those new to the series. I liked to creativity in the story and sass of its main character. Halfblood Huntress is another series I plan to investigate in the new year.

I also read On A Cold Winter’s Night by Kim Loraine, Buried Destiny by Anne Malcom, and Suck Me by Chantal Fernando, all of which were decent reads. Of this, I was most interested in Kim Loraine’s piece. For a little holiday cheer, check of Such Violent Delights. You may discover your next favourite paranormal romance writer.

Fool’s Folly (Fate’s Fools #2)
by Ophelia Bell
December 18, 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Don’t f*ck with Fate.

Deva Rainsong has found her dragon soul, but she still feels incomplete. As a chimera, bred in a lab from the blood of all four higher races and human blood combined, it will take no less than a fragment of a soul from all five races to complete hers.

Yet even as she starts to believe that she can finally be complete and all her powers awakened, her hopes are dashed when the second soul gift she receives comes with unexpected side effects. And to top it off Fate itself has redoubled efforts to seek out and destroy all the members of the bloodline.

Fate doesn’t like loose ends, and Deva’s very existence is upsetting the balance. Will she be able to strike a compromise or be forced to run to escape Fate’s wrath?

EXCERPT:
He propped himself up on his elbow and grazed his fingertips over the upraised golden glow of the matching mark he’d given me the night before. “Mated,” he said, his lips curling into a smile. “Marked. Soul bound. Or if you like human terms, wedded.” His teasing fingers strayed lower and I arched up, eager for his touch as he traced light circles around my nipple. “You are mine, Deva,” he said, dipping his head and replacing his fingers with his tongue. He continued to speak, his lips grazing over my hard nipple. “But more importantly, I am yours. I will always be yours no matter how many dreams you have of the others or how many join us in the flesh. I’m not that easy to get rid of.”
