Happy Thanksgiving with some spooky art!

Meet artist Angela Deane

If you have time, check out her shop. The ghost paintings are my favorite, but there are some other cool ones like Haunted Houses, Witches, and Flora.

Have a ghostly Thanksgiving!

“My work explores the beautiful, painful, and ultimately puzzling, human condition of having memories. In these photographs, I cover the people with paint, subtracting the specific identity of each person and transforming them into anonymous ghosts for the viewer to project upon. In this way, a private and specific experience becomes an open and shared one through the material addition of paint on photograph.” -Angela Deane

I was born and raised in the Sunshine State where I went to school for Fine Art. Though my official degree is in photography I must admit I did a lot more painting in the studio. I like photography on the walls of galleries just fine but I love it in a more casual way in my hand (bless instagram; the best app forevermore) and to my side table as a book.

After school I moved to London for a spell working in a photo lab and dancing roughly three nights a week. It was there my first real love of walking began. Picture a modern day city version of Lizzie Bennet and you have a good sense of me. I love the simplicity and freedom as well as being actually free - sans a pitstop for a coffee or wine - of the action. It's my favorite way to get to know a place and to get my brain working. Ideas flow with abandon.

It was only natural to then move to New York. My mother immigrated there from Italy and my father was Bronx born so I always knew it was in my future. High rents and the problematic nature of gentrification aside, I have to say there is no better city. Shared moments with strangers resonate with me near equal to "actual" relationships and always lift by way of their beauty, surprise, even sadness. Weaving amongst humanity each day is a gift. Each pair of my boots well worn after ten years spent there.

I stumbled into a fashion career, even had a boutique in the East Village down from Tompkins Square Park. After our brand folded in 2010 I began making the moves back down south to rebuild in a big house that cost less monthly than my Brooklyn apartment and recommitted myself to art making.

The walking isn't quite the same but I am finding this stint back in my homeland to be quite beneficial. Here in the heat and sun I have rebuilt my practice to where I work in the studio daily and also run my own business again with a line of artist-drawn scratch off greeting cards! (Yes, I am a lotto ticket junkie.)

Welcome to my world of ghosts and witches and dancing creatures. Thank you for coming. Don't be a stranger.
