Staying on the move is all half-Fae Ember can think about when she is stripped of her magic and exiled from Faerie. The human realm is completely foreign to the home she had known centuries before.

Her new job on the merchant airship is dangerous, but not nearly as life-threatening as staying within reach of the queen of Faerie. Besides, she’s always been able to handle any trouble thrown her way with a snide comment, a swift kick, and an apathy that protects her from caring about anyone or anything.

When the optimistic Reilley follows her, she tries to ditch the bothersome man. But it isn’t long before his naivety, and his own penchant for trouble, makes her feel responsible for him.

Faeries, pirates, and traveling players meet in this steampunk fantasy adventure as Ember tries to cope with feelings long forgotten and a past that pursues her.

I love all things steampunk, but this book barely had any steampunk elements to it--unless you count the airship that the heroine travels on for a while. Aside from that, I barely connected with any of the characters, and the fact that Ember seemed to want to sleep with every male character was weird too. When we meet the male lead, he's scrawny and comes off more as a kid Ember takes under her wing than anything else. So, when she falls for him, it made for more weirdness. Other things struck me as odd too. For instance, Ember's dad was the king and didn't have any issues with human-fae intermingling. Yet his second wife actively persecutes and exiles whole swathes of his people, and he doesn't find out? I mean, how?

In short, this book wasn't a good fit for me.

Most of my go-to series are 3 starrers
*No rating - wasn't my genre/dnf'd so rating it would be unfair
1 sheep - won't be picking up another book in a series again
2 sheep - average read with overused tropes and cliches. Will give the author another try/only continuing because of OCD, so must finish a series
2.5 sheep - liked the book but was put off because it was overly long/illtreatment of a character the author had me invest in and so on.
3 sheep - enjoyed the book but have reservations because I expected to be wowed and wasn't
4 sheep - was unputdownable
5 sheep - formed an emotional connection, will read the heck outta this series

About the Author

Website-Goodreads-Bookbub
Lieber has a wanderlust that would make a butterfly envious. When she isn’t planning her next physical adventure, she’s recklessly jumping from one fictional world to another. Her love of reading led her to earn a Bachelor’s in English from Wright State University.

Beyond her skeptic and slightly pessimistic mind, Lieber wants to believe. She has been many places—from Canada to England, France to Italy, Germany to Russia—believing that a better world comes from putting a face on “other.” She is a romantic idealist at heart, always fighting to keep her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds.

Lieber lives in Wisconsin with her husband (John) and cats (Yin and Nox).
