Perry Prete was born in Sudbury, Ontario 1962, the middle child of three. His father passed away in 1972, leaving only his mother and two siblings. His mother re-married years after, and they moved to a small town just outside Sudbury, where he completed grade school. He finished grades nine and part of grade ten at Ecole Secondaire Franco-Jeunesse before moving to London, Ontario, in 1976. He transferred to G.A. Wheable H.S. for the final two and a half years. For most of his high school years in London, he worked at McDonald's on Wellington Road. After graduating high school, Perry decided on a television career and went to Fanshawe College for Television Broadcasting and worked for CICI and CKNC, CTV and CBC affiliates for a short time in Sudbury. He moved back to London and worked for a few months before returning to Fanshawe for the Paramedic program, where he met his wife.

After graduating from Paramedicine, he worked as a medic in St. Mary's, Stratford, London, and Windsor before relocating to Brockville, Ontario, in 1984 to work full-time as a Paramedic. While working as a Paramedic, he was injured in a stationary bike accident which put his arm in a cast, giving him the time he needed to write his first novel, "All Good Things." He wrote his second novel shortly after, "The More Things Change."

In between novels, he briefly taught part of the Paramedic program at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall.

Perry wrote the third novel in the series, "The Things That Matter Most," "Highway 7," "The Mind's Eye," and "The Infected." He has three unfinished novels and several completed works.

Perry continues to work as a Paramedic for Leeds Grenville Paramedic Services. With over 40 years of experience and counting, those calls have provided ample material for his future books.

How The Pearl in the Darkness Came To Be

The story all started with the idea of a rather reclusive character, Leo Smith, who would have to break out of her shell to recruit individuals that would remain after the apocalypse. Then I thought, what if she’s living in a world where believing in a supreme being that cannot be seen is forbidden? It quickly unraveled from there. I was shocked at all the new characters that developed in her world, and how easily they grew in their own important role. Some days, I fell in love with them and the next I despised them. It was an emotional rollercoaster in a good way.

One of my favorite characters to write was the Archangel Michael. I wanted his physical description and the way he carried himself to conflict with the general stereotype we have given celestial beings. I gave him quite a disheveled appearance and a sarcastic sense of humor. He knew if Leo was to stand tall in front of skeptics, she would need some practice handling rejection. It was just what she needed to step outside of her fears and into the opportunity in front of her.

Once the recruitment phase of her story had been completed, I knew it was time for the world around her to fade to dark— and that it did! Writing all of the apocalyptic scenes was a rush. I found myself hunched over my laptop on an adrenaline rush far too late each night. Those were some of my favorite scenes. The ones that left my heart racing and reminded me that you can’t have the light without the dark.

Santana Saunders grew up along the Missouri River in rural North Dakota, where the sandbars were far-off lands and the canoes were pirate ships.

Excerpt – In The Hole
“Professor, take a look at this,” Mark said, squatting down and pointing at the nearest mound of dirt. He held his hand a few inches over it. “There are small holes, and I can feel gas escaping from them. That’s weird; it should be freezing, but it’s actually warm.” He leaned over and sniffed the air just above the hole. “Jesus, that reeks,” he cursed as he stood up and rubbed his eyes.

I reached down. There was a surprisingly large flow of gas coming out of the hole. I looked around at all of the other mounds of dirt dotting the ice on which we were standing. “Shit,” I exclaimed. “We’ve got to get the hell out of here.”

“Why?” he asked with a confused look on his face. “We just got here.”

“Prudhoe Bay natural gas is about three fourths methane. One eighth is ethane, propane, and other heavier hydrocarbons, while the remaining eighth is carbon dioxide. I’m not worried about the methane and ethane; they’re lighter than air and will drift up and out of the hole. But carbon dioxide, propane, and hydrogen sulfide are all heavier than air and build up in low areas.”

“Like the bottom of this hole,” Mark said as the nature of our danger dawned on him.

“Like the bottom of this hole,” I agreed.

Although I was breathing rapidly, it was becoming increasingly harder to catch my breath. Both were early signs of carbon dioxide poisoning. Meanwhile, my eyes were really watering, my nose was running, and my lungs were starting to burn. Hydrogen sulfide combined with the water on their moist surfaces to form hydrosulfuric acid. I had a dull headache and was becoming increasingly nauseated. Worse, the stench of sulfur had begun to disappear: a classic symptom of hydrogen sulfide poisoning. “We have to head back up and strap on oxygen tanks and full face respirators before we come back down.”

“Okay, Professor,” he replied, looking at me with concern. “You’re definitely not looking so good.”

Weak and increasingly clumsy, Mark had to help me reach the rope and secure it to my climbing harness. Then he said into his walkie-talkie, “Angela, there’s hydrogen sulfide and excessive carbon dioxide down here, and we need to get out of here right now. It’s made the professor sick, so I’m sending him up first.”

“Understood, Mark,” Angie replied, her voice indicating her concern. “Is he ready?”

“Yes, all hooked up,” Mark replied.

A second later, the rope began pulling me up. It sped faster and faster until I was practically running up the side of the hole. Soon, I was up to where the permafrost gave way to damp dirt. I slipped going over the boundary, and the rope dragged me face first over the short muddy slope. Bill helped me climb over the ridge of dirt surrounding the edge and unhooked my climbing harness.

Coughing and unable to catch my breath, I stumbled into Angie’s arms. The caustic gasses at the bottom of the pit had set off one of my ordinarily rare asthma attacks, leaving me gasping for air. I fumbled through my pockets, found my rescue inhaler, and had to give myself three puffs before my breathing became easier. Meanwhile, my eyes were still burning and watering so heavily that I heard rather than saw Bill throw the end of the rope back into the pit and use the winch to lower it rapidly into the hole. After helping me wipe the mud from my face, Angie wrapped me a bear hug, totally heedless of the muck she was transferring to her own face and clothes.

“It’s down,” Jill said, her voice amplified through our walkie-talkies.

Bill stopped the winch, and we waited for Mark to tell us when he was ready to come up.

“Okay, I’m ready,” Mark said. “Bring me up.”

Bill restarted the winch, and the rope began winding itself back around its spinning shaft.

Feeling stronger, I let go of Angie and turned back towards the pit so I could watch Mark being raised over the edge. It was at that moment, through eyes still somewhat blurry from tears, that I saw Kowalski. He was standing near the edge of the hole, a few feet downwind so that the smoke from his cigarette wouldn’t bother us. He took a final puff and carelessly flicked the still smoldering butt into the pit.

“Stop!” I croaked, my voice raspy and painful from coughing.

Kowalski turned towards me, and our eyes met. Unaware of what he’d just done, he was completely confused by the expression of horror on my face.

After seconds that seemed to stretch into eternity, the cigarette butt tumbled past Mark and eventually reached the depth where the concentration of methane and hydrogen sulfide reached explosive levels.

One of my favorite things about stopping by I Smell Sheep is the incredible guest post topic ideas that Sharon gives out like candy. This topic, another Sharon classic, got my creative juices going immediately.

If the world fell apart, naturally I would have a bunker already set up and ready to go. The absolutely critical items would be:

1. A robot butler. Who can cook gourmet dishes from practically anything, especially canned and dried food. Bonus points if he can play a proper game of chess.

2. A yoga mat and tapes. Hey, what? I get twitchy in small spaces. An exercise form that keeps me calm and centered (and strong) would be awesome.

3. A rifle with extra ammo. Just in case the door doesn’t hold.

4. A set of Kindles pre-loaded with most of the world’s books, and a charger that doesn’t run out. Or: a charger powered by a hand crank, so it literally can’t go out.

5. The hubbie.

6. Lots of paper and pencils.

7. Nice cheerful sunlight-spectrum lamps. Because I like my sunlight, ‘kay?

Optional bonuses (if there’s room):

1. A heating blanket. The ultimate in comfort, especially if it comes with a generator to keep all the other gadgets going.

2. My laptop with Scrivener pre-loaded. Because even if the world is ending, I’ve got deadlines, you know? Plus the other bunker-bound folks are going to want reading material and I don’t want to disappoint.

3. Access to the Internet. So I can watch the desperation and world-ending from my safe armchair, you know, just in case I wanted to.

4. Several friends & family members in adjoining bunkers for dinner parties with the robot butler.

5. A mammoth stockpile of food, not something minor, you understand, but a fort of cans, an herb garden, balsalmic vinegar, salt and pepper and sundried tomatoes and all the other comforts of home. Plus, you know, a hydroponic garden to keep us in oxygen and yummies. We have the sunlight-spectrum lamps already, am I right?

6. A cat. Because if the world is ending, I’m getting a cat, dang it. And cat food, a litter box, etc. etc. to keep her in style.

D.O.Z.D. Department of Zombie Defense: It Begins

As the title would suggest, issue one is more about laying the ground work for any upcoming books to follow this book. “It Begins” opens up with our group of heroes just doing their normal job of you, taking down terrorist…nothing big or anything. The event and the fact that’s it’s one of the guys’ last day on the field with them brings them together and it’s nice that they throw in some banter and what have you to give a sense of the group of men and their bond. The men are celebrating the day, tossing back a few, when *dun dun dun* unbeknownst to our heroes all hell is quickly breaking loose at the jail and they have to report back to work to help out with the riots at the jail. 

So this is how it begins and the events quickly escalate from there; the story moves at a solid pace and there’s a nice amount of guns, blood, and hey! Even some undead dudes! What more could you want!? I would say more zombies but like I said, this issue is about laying the ground work so I’m sure further issues will have plenty of zombie butt kicking going on. I think for the DOZD's first venture out, this is a solid effort and also I enjoyed guessing which character was which guy from D.O.Z.D.

Sheep Movie Review: World War Z

World War Z directed by Marc Forster and staring Brad Pitt and Karin Lane is the movie adaptation of the 2006 apocalyptic horror novel by Max Brooks. As someone who has not read the book, I found myself enjoying the movie for what it was. Big action, zombies and Brad Pitt. 

Plot: 

The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop a pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. 

Fans of the stories will surly have a whole different take on this film and I look forward to reading their comparison. After the movie ended and the final credits rolled, I was glad I didn't read the books because I fear there would have been some let down. Quiet a few sequences seemed glazed over quickly, so we could jump on to the next scene. A lot of information was lacking and when we did get some, there wasn't much to back it up. I've still no idea how the zombie virus originally started and frankly was quiet confused when Gerry makes a pit stop in Jerusalem. There seemed to be no point for this, other then more action and high drama. The book must have done a better job of explaining this.

The film's main point of view comes from the character Gerry (played by Pitt) and his family. These is a very short intro in his home life before the action picks up and takes center stage. Soon after, he has to leave said family with the Navy and head out to save the world. With a small group of military backing him, Gerry and his team are off to try and find a cure to mother natures mysterious virus. *Please do not arm young scientists with weapons, it never ends well. 

Bard Pitt is an excellent actor and this film is no less then what you would expect. Regardless of the plot holes and overall abundance of action, Pitt gives another solid performance. I don't know if he looks or acts like the book Gerry and frankly I do not care. I will however nitpick that his hair does stay quiet stylized throughout the film. NO way would he be looking this good after jumping, running, crashing, bombs, zombie guts and everything else.

The film banks on the fact that Gerry, apparently; is the only one that can find answers to this global problem. How an ex UN guy with some first aid skills can be the holy savior, and survive countless against all odds scenarios, I have no clue. But the film sells the idea and wants you to buy it. Ok, I can kind of roll with that, but give me a more down to earth character. Not a guy who can turn on a switch and suddenly have the skills of a ninja warrior and mad scientist. 

Freaky zombies with Olympic running will scare you silly, while Gerry busts heads and makes buddies along the way. Suspenseful and heartbreaking. Overall, the film is entertaining in a scary I-hope-this-never-happens-in-real-life kind of way.

Following Glenn's death (yes...I said that right), Rick and the rest of his group bring the body to be buried at the Hilltop. While Maggie and Sophia stay behind to pursue a better life, Jesus joins Rick, hoping to learn more about Negan. But when they return to Alexandria, they discover that Andrea has successfully repelled a Savior attack on the town...and taken a prisoner.

First and Foremost I believe we need to take a moment of silence in remembrance of a dear friend we lost to a brutal act of violence. Glenn, our dear friend, has been there through thick and thin and was always there to be walker bait in a time of need. Glenn was selfless, great friend, would have surely made a great father to him and Maggie's child; he stepped up to care for Sophia and proved he's a loyal companion. With that said- rest in peace Glenn, for now you are free of the daily suffering and free of being walker bait. May your piece of heaven be zombie-free dear friend.

In book #102 we're starting to deal with the aftermath of Glenn being murdered by Negan, the rest of the community is just now finding out and we're seeing how folks are dealing with his death. Which we see the original group is having the hardest of times, especially Rick, since Rick feels like he has to protect everyone. Rick is not taking the death very well and Glenn's death leads them to the realization that they possibly cannot take on The Saviors and that they must fold and give in to the Savior's demands (which is they expect 50% of food/ammo/etc that the group has on a weekly kind of basis).

The community does not like the idea of just giving up, letting the hostage go, and giving into their demands but I think we've all come to know Rick well enough to know there's other intentions behind this. With Eugene possibly being able to make ammo and Jesus from Hilltop going all sleuth on the Saviors, there's clearly something cooking here that Rick is being secretive to the others about and I can't wait to see how it'll unfold.
