TV Show Reveiew: Resident Alien (SYFY)

Resident Alien SYFY TV Series
Creator Chris Sheridan
Stars: Alan Tudyk, Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds
website
TV-14
An alien crash lands on Earth and must pass himself off as small-town human doctor Harry Vanderspeigle. Arriving with a secret mission to kill all humans, Harry starts off living a simple life… but things get a bit rocky when he’s roped into solving a local murder and realizes he needs to assimilate into his new world.

Not long ago I had an old injury come back and lay me out for a couple weeks. During that time I was flipping around my Peacock app and found a show based off a Dark Horse Comic series.

I sure love Dark Horse so that got me interested right away. Turns out the lead character is played by Alan Tudyk from Firefly and now I'm REALLY interested.

The show has aired two seasons so far on the SYFY channel and hopefully season three will drop early next year. The show is set in a small town called Patience, Colorado and the people of the town make the show even more engaging. Filled will humor, dark comedy and some really heart felt moments that had me watching episodes non-stop.

When an alien crash lands into this small town and tried to "blend in", it sure does lead to some very funny comedic moments. Lots of them actually. The addition of some major hitting actors like Linda Hamilton and Terry O'Quinn only bring this one up to yet another level of entertainment.

Each episode adds another layer of depth and emotion to an already building world. Tons of heart felt moments and life lessons just burst all around this one. I loved it, didn't want it to end and look forward to watching what will hopefully be many more years of entertainment.

SYFY and Dark Horse have found an alien match made in the cosmos above and what a thoroughly pleasurable ride this one is. Probe away on me anytime!

Comic Review: Tomb Raider: Inferno Vol 4, #1-4

Tomb Raider: Inferno Vol 4, #1-4
Writer: Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly
Artist: Phillip Sevy
Colorist: Michael Atiyeh
Cover Artist: Hannah Templer
Genre: Action/Adventure, Video Game
Publication Date: January 09, 2019
Format: FC, 104 pages; TPB; 6 5/8" x 10 3/16"
Price: $17.99
Age range: 14
ISBN-10: 1-50670-503-0
ISBN-13: 978-1-50670-503-3
Sold by Dark Horse Comics
Category: Graphic Novels & Manga
Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (Joyride, Hacktivist) continue Lara's story after Rise of the Tomb Raider and where Dark Horse series Survivor's Crusade left off! This volume collects issues #1-#4 of the 2018 Dark Horse Comics series Tomb Raider: Inferno.

Lara succeeds in hunting down Trinity to a remote outpost in Antarctica amidst the cold and darkness of the seemingly isolated land. Seeking to discover the mystery within the icy tomb before Trinity can exploit it, Lara faces a new adversary who is more cunning and more prepared than Lara has encountered in the past. In order to stop the terror Trinity is about to release, Lara must face the conflict residing within herself and decide once and for all how far she's willing to go, and what she's willing to let go of in the process.

Tomb Raider: Inferno is the collection of issues #1-#4 of the same name which pretty much means you get the whole story in one volume without having to hunt down each individual part. Super convenient right? I know I wouldn’t want to have 4 separate issues instead of the one volume.

Anyway, Inferno picks up where Rise of the Tomb Raider left off. Lara Croft has tracked the nefarious group Trinity to a location in Antarctica. Once there Lara tries to discover the secret of the icy tomb that makes it so valuable to Trinity. But she wasn’t counting on having to deal with inner conflict or an enemy that is much more prepared and capable of ending Lara’s quest and Lara.

Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly take Lara on more than just another adventure, they force her to face her past choices and give her the opportunity to come out stronger than ever before. I thought this was a great idea because it gave Lara more depth than before. Lara Croft is an action hero there is no question about that but I wanted to see her as a human too. With human emotions and failings and that’s exactly what Inferno did. It brought her down to a more relatable level because not all of us can be super awesome explorer/adventurers.
The artwork is as before amazing, with not only beautifully detailed drawings that capture Lara’s emotions as well as the action sequences, but with colors that really make the images pop out at the reader. Phillip Sevy did a great job with the images and so did Hannah Templer who did the front cover art.

Comic Review: Tomb Raider Volume 1: Spore from Dark Horse

Writer: Mariko Tamaki

Cover Artist: Agustin Alessio
Genre: Action/Adventure
Publication Date: October 26, 2016
Format: FC, 144 pages; TPB, 7'' x 10''

ISBN-13: 978-1-50670-010-6
After Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft’s adventure continues in an all-new Dark Horse series by Eisner Award–winning writer Mariko Tamaki!

Lara Croft is pursuing a lost truth about the world that just might unlock the secret to defeating death! She becomes entangled in a search for a rare mushroom said to grant immortality and a lethal new enemy that just won’t die! Collects the entire first arc of the Tomb Raider comic series, issues #1–#6.
* A perfect jumping-on point for new readers!
* Written by Eisner Award–winning author Mariko Tamaki.

Following the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider: Spore has Lara Croft pursuing a lead on a world that might hold the key to immortality but along the way she meets up with a formidable enemy that wants that information for themselves.

I’ve been a fan of the Tomb Raider games for years, mainly because Lara Croft is a more relatable version of Indiana Jones to me. I love that she’s getting more attention now than when I first started playing the games.

Writer Mariko Tamaki does justice to the character, bringing her signature sass, courage and intelligence to the intriguing plot while Phillip Sevy and Michael Atiyeh bring her to life with their combined talents. I was fully engaged in the storyline even though this was the first time reading a Tomb Raider comic. The action and suspense were what I expected from a Lara Croft story and the illustrations were top notch. I’d definitely recommend Tomb Raider: Spore to other fans and for anyone who is looking for a tough, no-nonsense woman as a protagonist.

Comic Review: Harrow County #19 from Dark Horse Comics

Harrow County #19

“Tales of Harrow County” Script: Tyler Crook
“Tales of Harrow County” Art: Aud Koch
Dark Horse Books
December 28, 2016

Genre: Fantasy, Horror

Format: FC, 32 pages; Ongoing
When a charming young man arrives in Harrow County, Emmy is thrilled to welcome new visitors to her home. But he has come with a gang of hunters, drawn to Harrow by the lure of big game: haints. With the promise of a normal life finally within her grasp, Emmy will be forced to question her devotion to the only life she’s ever known.

Emmy finds hunters hunting in the woods and when her ‘father’ and she head to where he used to eat breakfast before going hunting himself, she learns that their prey are not deer or birds or bear, but something much, much older. Much, much darker. When she tries to warn the boy, Luke, who is with the hunters, they laugh and tell him to ignore her advice. Then they all leave on the hunt for the legendary monster.

The short story that is included with the main story, is “Priscilla.” It is about the killing of owls by goblins in the woods of Harrow County.

Harrow County #10 like the proceeding issues in the past, gives what the reader wants, chills from the creepy horror of dark legends spun not from around the campfire, but by word and art of a comic.

I gave Harrow County #19 4.5 spooky sheep

Enter the world of the Slayer, the Chosen One who wields the skill to fight vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness . . . Favorite characters and moments from the beloved television series are represented in this delightful adult coloring book. Containing 45 black-and-white, detailed, and original illustrations, you can add color to Buffy and Co.—and, of course, all the Big Bads!

* Includes 45 pieces of beautifully detailed black-and-white artwork!

I got a look at a digital version of this coloring book. They illustrated iconic scenes from the series. One page has dialogue or a quote from a scene and the opposing page will be the illustration of that scene. It was fun to revisit some of the funny and action filled moments from the show.

The artwork isn't what I would call beautiful coloring material, but this is aimed more at the Buffy fandom than the fan of adult coloring books...so it's a "fashion over function" deal.

If you are a big Buffy fan or want to find a gift for a fan of the show then you can't go wrong...they probably aren't going to color it, just put it in their fandom collection (raise hand if you have one *raises hand*). But if you are a die hard coloring booker...this would be pretty basic.

Emmy has just learned about the mysterious group of powerful beings that call themselves her family. But they’ve been around since before Harrow County ever existed. Through the eyes of a haint, masterfully illustrated by guest artists Carla Speed McNeil and Jenn Manley Lee, this issue explains the Abandoned’s past and reveals his connection with the family, including the enigmatic Amaryllis.
* Featuring special backup stories exclusive to the single issues!
* The second in a two-part story about the Abandoned.
“This is illustrated horror at its best. The world of Harrow County is dark, dense and deserves its status as a modern horror classic.”—Big Comic Page

In this issue, Emmy is told what happened when Malachi made Hester, thinking she would be as close to human and able to lead the family. Except she learns much more about who the beast haunt in the woods is and who she really is.

The Tales of Harrow County is Priscilla. And Priscilla isn’t human, but something much, much creepier, plus, this is obviously a first part of a continuing story for the next issue.

Delightfully eerie as always, Harrow County has never disappointed in being what a good Southern Gothic supernatural dark fantasy should be—nightmares and haints!

While leading heat-stricken and water-deprived Roman soldiers through the scorching desert to fight back against the Berber hordes, Quinlan uncovers a grave scheme that has the potential to obliterate his troops entirely.

In this issue, Master Quinlan has fought with the Roman army against Berbers for five years. His commander is Tacitus, and Quinlan is his most trusted centurion. He would gladly die for him…if he could die. And though he is in the Roman army, he not fighting for Rome, who has not always treated him well, but for himself, a free man. More so, six years ago he learned through the other ancient ones like the Master that they needed him to learn so they could determine if he would be their ally, or must be destroyed. Thinking the Master had more to worry about than searching for him, Quinlan is told to lead some men to a pass to cut off a Berber army, while his commander would lead the rest to surprise the enemy. Quinlan would find more than Berbers though.

This is well written, keeping to historical accuracy, while giving us more insight to Quinlan and his past.

GUEST REVIEWERS: Dani Harper, assisted by Toby the Pug, and Tux the 80-pound Unknown Canine

DANI: From the very beginning, it was clear that Battlepug had the ingredients of a truly outstanding graphic novel.

TOBY: “Pugs!”

TUX *scrunches down on the floor at Toby’s eye level* “I can be a pug.”

DANI: “Sure, Tux. But you’re still not sitting in my lap. Yes, Toby, this story has pugs. The narrator has a pug friend named Mingo, but the real star of the story is—

TOBY: “Sprinkles!”

DANI: “Aaand Sprinkles is a ginormous pug who befriends the bitter barbarian who is our true hero. The big nameless Kinmundian has lost everything he cares about and embarks on a quest for vengeance.”

TOBY: “Sprinkles lets the Kinmundian ride him. If I can just grow big enough, I could be a mighty steed for a hero too!” *runs over to his dog dish and chows down*

DANI: “Toby, I hate to tell you this, but you’re not getting any taller, just wider.”

TUX: “I can be a pug.” <joins Toby at the dog dish, inhales all the kibble>

DANI: “As I was saying, Battlepug was nearly perfect to start with. Mike Norton’s artwork is among the very best in the business, making every colorful page an experience all on its own. But even more amazing is his story. He took hugely disparate elements and blended them seamlessly.”

TOBY <bouncing> “It’s not every day you get a pug story that has giant creatures, and magic, and swords, and battles, and enchanted armor, and pirate’s dens, and walking bones, and-and-and EVERYTHING!”

DANI: “True, but Norton did something even better. He created a large and diverse cast of characters, and not only made them work together, he made the reader CARE about them.”

TOBY <thinking hard> “I thought I just cared about the pugs. But then I kind of worried about the Kinmundian. And I wanted to know more about Moll, and what was going to happen to Bryony… In the end, I guess I wanted to know what happened to all of them.” <falls over> “I think I pulled a brain muscle.”

DANI: “But you’re right!”

TOBY: “I am?”

TUX: “I can be a pug.” <falls over with a ground-shaking thud, narrowly missing Toby>

DANI: “Everyone that the Kinmundian met had their own story to tell, and we empathized with them and worried about them and cheered for them. That’s what made Book Five, the final book, so important. We needed to know what happened to all those characters we cared about. And that’s when we get to see the very best part of all.”

TOBY: “What’s the best part? Is it when— Mbmpf!” <finds a sock stuffed in his mouth>

DANI: “Careful now, no spoilers! It’s been said that the best stories are about CHANGE. Mike Norton made sure that his hero, the nameless Kinmundian, gradually changes in profound ways without realizing it. And in so doing, he brings about change in others too. That’s the best part of all.”

TOBY: “Mgyphmrr mewqikkm!” <sucking on the sock contentedly>

DANI: “Exactly. We can’t say anything more about this book, except that all the storylines are tied up nicely, and that readers will find ample resolutions—with a few surprises thrown in, of course.”

TUX: “I can be a pug.” <wanders off to find a sock>

Comic Review: Harrow County #17 from Dark Horse Comics

HARROW COUNTY #17

Price: $3.99
The Abandoned, that hulking figure with haunting yellow eyes, rarely leaves his ramshackle cabin deep in the woods of Harrow County. But it wasn’t always so. Illustrated by guest artists Carla Speed McNeil and Jenn Manley Lee, this issue is the first of a two-part story that explores the Abandoned’s past and reveals secrets about the very foundations of Harrow County.

* Guest art by Carla Speed McNeil and Jenn Manley Lee!

* Featuring special backup stories exclusive to the single issues!

The haint, Old Buck, tells Emmy a story about Malachi who made the laws for beings such as the others, and Old Buck, to protect them. But Buck has run away to the Outer Banks, living off the wild horses. Malachi appears with Amaryllis, to try and convince Buck to come back with them, where he can keep him safe. But Buck does not. Not long after the others led by Levi kill a human fisherman. Then they head off to town where a festival is going on.

In the “Tales id Harrow County,” a hunter, Zeb shoots a deer dead, but finds a strange creature hovering over the carcass, claiming the woods are his hunting grounds, as well as the deer. It tells Zeb if he pays a tithe, it’ll let Zeb take the deer. Zeb just shoots at the thing and takes the deer home to his family. But in Harrow County, things have a way of getting their due, as Zeb finds out.

Harrow County might be the love child of Ray Bradbury and Edgar Allan Poe, if they had one. Unsettling, dark, and fantastical, with a down home Southern Gothic twist.

Now a champion in the ancient arenas of Rome, Mr. Quinlan finds himself up against the fiercest of all of the gladiators. But his chances of survival outside the arena are even worse, as the Master closes in on Mr. Quinlan after years of searching!

* The origin of Mr. Quinlan from director Guillermo del Toro and writer David Lapham—begins here
!

The comic issue begins with  Mr. Quinlan as an arena gladioator in Rome, 55 A.D. At that time, he is known as Bellator Candidus, and almost undefeatable. But the Emperor is not impressed and feels his favorite warrior, Spiculus, will beat the white newcomer. Spiculus fought with honor, skill and dignity, something the vampire half-breed aspired to. And when Quinlan does defeat the other gladiator, the Emperor thinks he fights like a demon. It is at that moment a stranger appears—the Master.
It is great to see how Quinlan began with the first issue and now this second one. Hopefully, it will go all the way to the time when the Master first arrives in America on a plane, like the first book and in the TV series.

Kate Leth and Megan Levens team up for a magical new series!

Three young witches are robbed of their magical items, and they’ll have to hit the road to track down the mysterious thief before he does any damage to—or with—their possessions.

* Supernatural meets Buffy and The Craft!

Spell on Wheels is a new comic series from Dark Horse. Three witch friends are robbed of some magical stuff. They head out to track down their items that have been sold on a black market auction site. They don't know who broke in or why, but they intend on finding out. What the women don't know is that there is someone more powerful behind the theft. The reader knows a little bit more info about this mysterious person than the women, but not much.

Jolene (27 years old), Claire (26 years old) and the newest addition to their group Andy (23 years old) are three witches living together. The comic opens with someone breaking into their home while they are working at a festival doing tattoos and tarot readings. The reader is given their names, ages and magical abilities. We get an idea about each woman's personality and the group dynamic.

I like the three women, for the most part. I find characters like Claire a little annoying, the nervous Nelly type. The story makes a few jumps in logic that leave me scratching my head, but it might be cleared up in the next issue. Overall an entertaining read. The artwork is clean and bright.

From the mind of master storyteller Neil Gaiman!

Young Jack’s world was full of ghosts and ghouls, but one monster—a ravenous and hideous troll—would haunt him long into manhood. As the beast sups upon a lifetime of Jack’s fear and regret, Jack must find the courage within himself to face the fiend once and for all!

* Beautifully adapted by Colleen Doran (The Sandman, Stan Lee’sAmazing Fantastic Incredible: A Marvelous Memoir)!

* A gorgeous new addition to your Gaiman library!

Colleen Doran's artwork brings Gaiman's poignant fairy tale, Troll Bridge, to life.

Troll Bridge is a short story that appeared in Gaiman's short story collection Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fictions and Illusions. You can find the whole story online on some sites. It is the story of a young boy, Jack, with a big imagination and a lot of fear. He meets the troll and begs to live longer. He ends up coming back to the troll at different stages of his life. Asking for more time before the troll "eats his life."

There are different interpretations when it comes to what the troll is or represents. Is he real or just a manifestation of Jack's fear. It is a poignant tale and gives the reader much to think about.

Dark Horse Comics brings Troll Bridge to life in a hardcover graphic novel with artwork by Colleen Doran. The artist created beautiful illustrations and turned it into the fairy tale it was meant to be...I mean, the main character's name is Jack...

The origin of Mr. Quinlan!

A vampiric abomination seeks to destroy the monster that sired him. Born as a mistake of a powerful vampire known as the Master and raised in the brutal gladiatorial arenas of ancient Rome, Mr. Quinlan must survive long enough to carry out his mission when his target begins hunting him.

* Go back to the beginnings of a popular character from The Strain.

* Watch The Strain on FX!

In this first issue, we learn the origins of the half vampire, half human vampire hunter, Quinlan. Like Blade the vampire hunter, he too can walk in the daylight, unlike the vampires in The Strain. His life began in his mother’s belly, as she and other slave girls were brought to the Master, now called Thrax. Thrax was a trusted confident of the mad Roman Emperor Caligula. Before he could finish her, guards came to get Thrax because Caligula needed him. Quinlan’s mother was already infected and changing and able to overpower her guard to escape. She gives birth to Quinlan, who grows like a normal child, except he has the vampire tongue like her and subsist on blood. Unlike her, he can hunt in the daylight and he doesn’t have the worms in his blood, so he cannot infect others. Thrax is chased away after Caligula’s death, but he searches for the woman and her child.

Dark Horse gives us the frightening horror, blood and darkness from The Strain, but this time, takes us into the past, adding a historical aspect to it. If you enjoy historical vampire horror stories, you will enjoy reading this comic. The Strain: Master Quinlan, Vampire Hunter could be called the bloody love child of Anne Rice if Guillermo Del Toro was the father.

I give The Strain: Master Quinlan, Vampire Hunter 4 sheep.

“One of 2015’s best horror comics.”—io9

Emmy has learned that she is not as alone in the world as she thought. Other beings, each possessing dark and terrifying powers, have arrived in Harrow, and they claim to be her true family. They promise to reveal the mysteries of her origin and the truth about the evil witch Hester Beck, but if she accepts their claims, she may condemn everyone she’s ever known.

* Featuring a special backup story exclusive to the single issues by Matt Kindt and Brian Hurtt!

In development for television on SyFy!

Emmy finds out that she has "family" of sorts. Beings with powers, of which, the witch Hester had been one. One of these beings, Odessa, visits her, telling her about the others and what Hester has done. That Hester broke laws, killing her teacher, Amaryllis, and that they banished her, unable themselves to kill her due to the laws that they should not kill one another. Most of all, they plan to teach Emmy about their ways, get her to accept their guidance. It’s what she must do that upsets Emmy.

In “Tales of Harrow County" they talk about how Kammi made many things, some being men. And how without her, these men made plans, to think for themselves. In doing so, there were dire consequences and because of that, those left wanted revenge on the one who began the whole mess.

Harrow County just keeps on getting better and spookier. I am never disappointed with this comic.

I give Harrow County #15 five sheep.
