Double Book Review: Slay (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Book 30) by Laurell K. Hamilton + excerpt

Slay (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Book 30)
by Laurell K. Hamilton
November 7, 2023
Laurell K. Hamilton has captivated readers with her gritty, seductive tales of vampire hunter Anita Blake for thirty bloody fantastic years. Now, in the thirtieth novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, wedding bells are ringing. But before Anita can make it to the altar, she must face an obstacle more daunting than any supernatural threat....

Necromancer Anita Blake is small, dark, and dangerous. Her turf is the city of St. Louis. Her job: U.S. Marshal—Preternatural Branch. She’s faced horrifying monsters and brutal killers and come out the other side still standing.

Considering how things in her life tend to go, Anita never expected her walk down the aisle with Jean-Claude to go smoothly. They’ve already been confronted with naysayers and a power-hungry ancient evil, but now Anita has to do the one thing that actually scares her: introduce her very religious, very human relatives to her fiancé—the newly crowned vampire king of America.

As Anita tries to keep the peace between the family she left behind and the family she’s chosen, dark forces jump at the chance to take advantage of the chaos. With her happy-ever-after at risk and everyone’s immortal souls hanging in the balance, Anita grapples with a hard truth: Blood makes you related, but loyalty makes you family.

I give this book 5 out of 5 sheep

After reading the last book, Smolder, I was hoping that this book would give us a little more insight into the big bad that we met in that book, and fortunately, we find out who it is and what they want. The big bad being Deimos is behind the attacks on Anita and her people. Anita's family is set to come to town to meet Jean-Claude, be fitted for her wedding, and see if her father will give her away at her wedding since he and the rest of the family are very religious and don't like the fact that she's marrying a vampire. Her father and grandmother were really awful but her father at least seemed to chill out a little by the end of the book. Her grandmother, on the other hand, was just plain terrible and I can't say one good thing about the woman. Although we did learn a secret about her that was not explored yet. Like, why bring up this big secret if we aren't going to find out more about it? That made no sense.

By the end of this book, we were really no closer to the wedding which I was hoping would happen or at least try to happen. But we do find out about the plan that Deimos has hatched and it's a very well-thought-out one that includes some of Anita and Jean-Claude's people actually betraying them, which I found to be exciting when it was revealed who it was. Plus, the fact that Deimos is not just a vampire; no, he has other abilities which made him a very strong adversary. It was nice to see a big bad be able to overpower Anita and some of her people for once because usually she and Jean-Claude are very powerful and they quickly overcome whatever is thrown at them, but not this time, and that made this book exciting.

There was a lot of action, danger, and family drama in this book, so I was always engaged and excited to see what would happen next. I've been a long-time fan of this series and enjoyed this book but am really looking forward to finally seeing Anita and Jean-Claude get married.

5 Sheep

Anita’s family has decided to come to St. Louis to meet Jean-Claude prior to the wedding. It has been up in the air whether her dad would be able to walk her down the aisle since, in his eyes and that of his mother, vampires have no soul and if Anita marries him, then her soul will be damned to hell as well. Even though Anita has her family to deal with, and details of the upcoming wedding, she still ends up entrenched in vampire politics.

The biggest surprise for Anita comes with how her stepmother and stepsister behave towards her and the loves of her very confusing poly group. As Anita quickly learns blood doesn’t make you family; loyalty does. Her grandmother, who was not supposed to come, insisted on joining the family on this trip,, and needless to say there was a reason she wasn’t to come. I have to say I really enjoyed this story. There was more story and less sex which sometimes is what I am looking for.

A figure rounded the bend in the stairs all that way down, and before my eyes told me who, the energy we shared danced over my skin as if he’d brushed his fingertips over parts of my body that were hidden under my clothes. I shivered as I watched him lift off the steps and start floating toward me. It made me laugh and say, “Now there’s a solution to all these damned steps.”

He rose toward the ceiling, his long black hair spilling out around him like a dark aura. His hair wasn’t streaming out around him because he was flying toward me but moving in the wind of his own power, so that his black curls writhed and boiled like a dozen hands were playing with it, but it was his magic, just his magic.

He needed one of his usual lace, leather, and sexy-boots outfits for all that hair to frame, but he was dressed in one of only two modern suits I’d ever seen him in; the first time it had been to save the feelings of a grieving family, and this time we were trying not to give my father any other reason to hate him. In that moment I knew I didn’t care if my dad liked him or not. I loved Jean-Claude and nothing my dad did would change that.

He landed lightly on first one foot, then the other until he stood beside me at the top of the stairs. I wrapped my arms around him, but the traditionally long suit jacket felt wrong on him. He either did no jacket or some version of a bolero so that it hit him somewhere between his lower ribs and just below his natural waist. He had a fabulous ass, and it seemed a shame to cover it up.

He wrapped his arms around me and laughed. “Ma petite, we chose this suit precisely so it would cover more of my body, so I did not shock your family.”

I stared up into that beautiful face with the darkest blue eyes I’d ever seen, set in thick black lashes with a perfect curve of eyebrows that were all natural; he didn’t even need mascara. So unfair to the rest of us. His face was almost feminine in its beauty, but there was something about the line of his chin that turned all that gorgeousness a little more masculine. He was still androgynous, but it leaned a little more to the male side. The long black curls framed his face and trailed down his shoulders almost to his waist. My family thought long hair was only for girls. Putting him in a traditional men’s suit really didn’t make him look more like the type of man my family would approve of, but hey, at least we were trying.

“I won’t ever look into your face without thinking how beautiful you are, and why are you marrying me?”

“I believe that is the man’s line, ma petite.”

I grinned and said, “Traditionally it is, but most men don’t look like you.”

“That you compare yourself to me and think yourself the lesser beauty means you do not see truth when you look into the mirror, ma petite.”

“I second that,” Nicky said.

I glanced at him and couldn’t help but smile at the look on his face. “I know I don’t always see the truth in the mirror. Nicky and Ethan have met who messed me up.” I turned back to Jean-Claude. “That delight is still ahead of you.”

“I am looking forward to it, ma petite, and before you complain I would give much if my mother and sister were alive for me to introduce you to them. That I can meet your family, however broken, is a gift to me.”

Double Book Review: Smolder (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Book 29) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Smolder (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Book 29)

Vampire hunter Anita Blake is no stranger to killing monsters. It's part of her job as a Preternatural U.S. Marshal, after all. But even her experience isn't enough to stop something that is bent on destroying everything—and everyone—she loves.

Anita Blake is engaged to Jean-Claude, the new vampire king of America. Humans think she's gone over to the side of the monsters. The vampires fear that their new king has fallen under the spell of the most powerful necromancer in a thousand years.

In the midst of wedding preparations—including getting Edward, aka U.S. Marshal Ted Forrester, fitted as best man—Anita gets a call that the local police need her expertise at a brutal murder scene linked to a nationwide slaughter of vampires and humans, dubbed the Sunshine Murders.

But there is more than just a murderer to catch: an ancient evil has arrived in St. Louis to challenge Jean-Claude for his crown, his life, Anita, and all they hold dear. Even with Jean-Claude's new powers as king and Anita's necromancy, it isn't enough; they must embrace their triumvirate or allow primeval darkness to spread across the country, possessing first the vampires and then the humans. Evil will triumph unless Jean-Claude and Anita can prove that love conquers all.

Anita is preparing for her wedding to Jean-Claude while trying to balance her work and love life as well. The humans of the world believe she has gone over to the other side with the monsters while the vampires worry that their new king is under her spell as the most powerful necromancer in a thousand years.

Anita receives a call to assist the local police with the Sunshine Murders and even though she doesn’t want to leave Ted, Peter, or any of her bridal party alone, she does what she does best and goes to work. Things start going sideways at the murder scene and only seem to get worse as the night goes on.

I struggled with rating this book between a 4 and a 5. I loved the story, but I did not like that the story did not get resolved and that is the only reason I considered the 4. Hamilton is a master writer that gives you more than you even realize and makes you think about some of the underlying themes of the story as you read it.

I give this book 3 out of 5 sheep.

Anita and Jean-Claude are finally getting married...or are they?

Anita is preparing to marry the new vampire King of America, when a new, very old vampire comes to claim Jean-Claude's place as king. They find that this new nemesis is very powerful and have trouble fighting him when he first appears. Only Richard's appearance back in their lives helps strengthen their hold so they can best him.

So not only does Anita need to worry about wedding plans, her family who hates vampires wanting to come to the ceremony, but now a new vampire threat, Richard coming back and Asher coming back with a new problem named Kane, as well. It was nice to see Richard and Asher back, though.

When Anita is called to a murder scene, things start to go wrong because the government is working on a way to control vampires, but it totally works the opposite way from what they wanted. Anita is mad, and rightly so.

I was waiting for a storyline that I'm used to with lots of action and ended up with lots of therapy talk and talking about problems. I can kind of understand that since Asher and Richard are back and they needed to show Anita, Jean-Claude and the rest of the poly group that they have or are trying to work through their problems in order to come back to the group for good. But this felt more like a book setting up the next book, so there aren't these emotional messes to deal with. I just hope the next book is high on action and has less talking about the emotional problems they have.

Although they figured out who the big bad was in this book, they didn't take him down. They figured out how to fight him and plan to do just that, but it doesn't happen in this book. This was more a setup for that to happen in the next book. This book dealt more with the jealousy, emotional baggage, and problems they have being a poly group with so many people in Anita's life. Some of the issues are being resolved, but not all and Asher's big problem, Kane, is still a big problem he can't control. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with that.

I will say that there are a lot of characters in this series and a lot of them are in this book so I would say not to start with this book if you want it to make sense. I would definitely start this series with the first book and work your way through since there seem to be new characters popping up in each new book and old characters coming back from previous books.

Book Review: Rafael (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 28) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Rafael (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 28)

Rafael, king of the wererats, must fight to the death to defend his crown. He wants Anita Blake, one of his closest allies, with him as he faces an opponent unlike any he’s faced before. He will ask Anita to risk everything to be at his side....

But some of the wererats fear that Rafael depends too much on Anita and her ties to the vampires. They believe that there is only room in America for one supernatural king, and Rafael will turn them into nothing more than food for the bloodsuckers.

Among his enemies, a new challenger has arisen who is younger, hungrier, and has dark secrets that could destroy both the wererats and the vampires. Rafael will go into the magical heart of his people to find the power and violence that he needs to save them all, or die trying.

Anita has always had a lot on her plate between all her lovers, her job, her upcoming wedding, not to mention all her titles that she has trouble keeping track of as it is, so when Rafael, king of the wererats, has to fight to the death to defend his crown Anita is trying everything possible to keep him alive and on their side.

The wererats culture is something that we know little about, and Rafael doesn’t share much unless it comes in direct contact with the situation. A younger wererat has decided to challenge Rafael for the crown stating that Rafael’s connection to Anita ties the whole wererat race to the vampires. Rafael states that he will do anything to defend his people, including dying if that is what it takes, and Anita will do whatever it takes to save him, the connection to her people as well as all the wererats.

This book gave a real insight into Rafael and the power behind the wererats. The book was an easy read, was intriguing and brought all kinds of insights that previously were unknown.

I give this book 5 out of 5 sheep.
This book is all about Rafael and Anita and whether or not she is going to make him her rat to call and whether or not the wererats are going to accept her. While a lot of the wererats like her and know that she isn't evil and know that they aren't in danger from her or Jean-Claude, there are a few that are scared which causes some problems.

Asher is back and Jean-Claude has forgiven him for being such a jerk in the past. I felt for the guy because he had some stuff that he needed to work through. But Anita is being standofish with him not only because of how he acted but because his boyfriend, Kane hates her. This is going to be really interesting in upcoming books when they all start sleeping together again which I know is going to happen.

Rafael is a wererat and The Rat King, which I loved. I'm a huge rat person myself so I really liked seeing wererats in this story. Rafael was getting challenged often because the wererats were scared that if Anita made Rafael her rat to call that all of them would be servant's to the vampires because of her ties to Jean-Claude. The wererats were also scared because Anita and Jean-Claude were getting married and although she had wereanimal magic, she couldn't shift into any wereanimals. Rafael is supposed to fight Hector and if he loses, Hector will be the new leader of the wererats. Anita is scared that Rafael might not win because Rafael doesn't seem to have what it takes emotionally to kill Hector. So when Anita feeds the ardeur from Rafael she can feel all the wererats through him and knows that Hector is trying to keep her out because he has a secret that he doesn't want her to know but she knows because she is stronger than he knows.

When Anita goes to the arena to watch Hector and Rafael fight, there are those that don't want her there and they let her know it. She has to fight her way through a couple of people and when a whole bunch of rats show up, she remembers that she's kinda scared of the little furry creatures. Personally, I loved the scenes with all the rats. Anita surprises a lot of the wererats because she has magic that they didn't know about which makes a lot of them back down from confronting her. There are secrets that are revealed and some really great twists in this book.

This is the 28th book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series and I've been reading this series since the beginning. If you've been reading this series you already know what to expect but I would definitely start at the beginning because there are a lot of characters in this series and it will make more sense if you start with the first book.

I gave Rafael 3 ½ weresheep

Anita Blake’s latest book has Rafael, king of the wererats, for the title. He asks Anita to be with him when he goes to fight the wererat who challenge him for the right to lead the wererats of America. The opponent is someone he thinks may be his son. But when Anita feels the opponent may have become another vampire’s animal to call, controlling the man, Rafael, knows he must beat the other wererat to save his people or die trying to do it.

I noticed that the Anita Blake books are mainly about her sleeping with all her men or a lot of talking. But after some of that in the beginning, this one got interesting to me. As someone who misses the first books in the series and enjoyed the Obsidian Butterfly novel, which was different after the way Anita was becoming, bringing back the old Anita, I feel this book halfway changed for the better.

A brutal murder, a suspect in jail, and an execution planned—but what if the wrong person is about to be killed?

When a fellow U.S. Marshal asks Anita Blake to fly to a tiny community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on an emergency consult, she knows time is running short. When she arrives, there is plenty of proof that a young wereleopard killed his uncle in the most gruesome and bloody way possible. As the mounting evidence points to him, a warrant of execution is already under way.

But something seems off about the murder, and Anita has been asked for her expert opinion on the crime scene. Despite escalating pressure from local cops and the family’s cries for justice for their dead patriarch, Anita quickly realizes that the evidence doesn’t quite add up.

Time is against Anita, as the tight-knit community is up in arms and its fear of supernaturals is growing. She races to uncover the truth and determine whether the Marshals have caught the killer or are about to execute an innocent man—all in the name of justice.

Sucker Punch finds Anita Blake flying to Michigan to work a case with fellow U.S. Marshal Win Newman but what she doesn’t expect is for fellow Marshal Otto Jefferies to show up on the scene. Anita begins to investigate the case she was called in because time is of the essence and there is more than one thing that doesn’t up on the case. When supernaturals came to light and the warrant system was put into place there was nothing written to anticipate a case that has discrepancy making this one of the hardest cases Anita has worked on.

To make matters worse, Olaf wants to have the conversation so he can date Anita which isn’t at the top of her list of priorities and she would prefer it was a never have conversation. Olaf’s list of fun things to do with a woman is less than stellar and something Anita must avoid at all costs.

I really liked the way this book unfolded. It was more about the storyline than Anita’s sex life which made it a particularly good read. If you’re an Anita Blake fan do not miss this book.

The tiny plane landed in the dark on a runway that felt way too short. When the plane finally skidded to a stop, I couldn't make my right hand let go of the armrest. Literally I'd held on so tight that my hand had locked up, as if holding on tight would have done a damn bit of good if the plane had wrecked. The pilot turned his head to look at me and give me a thumbs-up. I just stared at him, my heart in my throat. I was phobic of flying, and this bumpy trip in a four-seater Cessna hadn't done a damn thing to quiet my fears.

He took off his headset and said, "Oh, come on, it wasn't that bad, was it?" He smiled when he said it. I glared at him until his smile faltered. I was projecting badass while the only mantra in my head was I will not throw up. I will not throw up. Only knowing that a man's life hung in the balance had gotten me to climb into the progressively smaller planes until this final one.

"Well, welcome to Hanuman, Michigan, Marshal Blake," the pilot said at last, and opened the door.

As I pried my hand free of its death grip, I wondered again why I was doing this. Because it's your job, I thought. I kept telling myself that as I gathered my bags and fitted the big one through the door ahead of me.

The pilot said, "That bag's big enough to hold a body."

"Only if it was my size or smaller, though I guess I could cut it up and make almost anyone fit," I said as I got the rest of me and the smaller bag through the door and down onto the tarmac.

"Very funny," the pilot said.

I gave him the flat look until he said, "What's really in the bag?"

"Weapons," a man said as he walked toward us in the last light of the setting sun.

I'd had just a moment to see the forest, and then it was dark as if someone had turned the lights off. You know you're in the boondocks when it's that dark even before you step into the trees; in their shade, it would be cave dark.

I smiled at Marshal Winston Newman. He was as tall as the first time I'd met him, as in over six feet, but had more meat on his bones as if he was either gaining weight or gaining muscle. I'd have to see him in better light to be sure whether he was hitting the gym or hitting the donuts. His hair was still short underneath his white cowboy hat, but the hat wasn't brand-new anymore. The brim had been worked with his hands so that it made an almost sharp point over his face. It fit him now. When I'd first met him, the hat had struck me as a present from someone who hadn't really known him or wanted him to be more cowboy than he'd seemed.

He offered to take a bag so I could shake his hand, and I let him take it. I'd have done the same for him. "Thanks for flying out at the last minute, Blake."

"I appreciate you reaching out on this." I almost added rookie, but he wasn't one anymore. He was newer than me, but then most marshals in the preternatural branch were. There were only eight of us from the old days; everyone else was either dead, worse than dead, or retired.

"Thanks for helping me out, Jim," Newman said to the pilot, who was standing by his plane watching us.

"The Marchand family has been around here a long time, and Bobby is my friend, Marshal Newman. I appreciate you trying to give him a chance."

"You understand that if Bobby Marchand did this, then I will have to execute him," Newman said.

"If he killed old man Marchand, then he'll have earned it, but Bobby has been an Ailuranthrope since just after we graduated high school. He had it under control."

I was surprised that Jim knew the politically correct term for cat-based lycanthropy. Sorry, for Therianthropy, which was the new term for all of it since it didn't imply wolf like lycanthropy did. But a lifetime of using it as a general term was going to be hard to break for me.

"That's what everyone tells me. Thanks again, Jim. Marshal Blake and I have to get over to the sheriff's office." He started moving toward a big Jeep Wrangler that was parked in the grass beside the runway.

"Duke is a good man, Newman. He's just never seen anything like this."

Newman kept us moving toward the Jeep as he called back over his shoulder, "I'm not questioning Sheriff Leduc's competency, Jim."

"Good, but you watch out for his deputy, Wagner."

That made Newman stop and look back at the pilot. "What's wrong with Wagner?"

"He gets rough when he thinks he can get away with it."

"Does the sheriff know?" Newman asked.

"I don't know, but everybody else in town does."

"Thanks for the heads-up, Jim."

"Not a problem. I hope you and Marshal Blake work this out."

"Me, too, Jim. Me, too," Newman said as he opened the back door and tossed my bag of weapons in.

Since I already had the Springfield EMP 9mm in an inner pants holster, with my marshal's badge on the belt next to it-so if I had flashed it on one of the larger planes, they'd see my badge-plus two extra magazines in the cargo pockets of my pants, a folding Emerson wave knife from Gerber in another pocket, a small tactical flashlight, a very slender man's wallet, and my smartphone, I was okay being out of easy reach of the rest of my weapons and body armor. I went around to the passenger-side door and let myself in. I'd add two more knives and switch the EMP for my Springfield Rangemaster full frame .45 in a drop leg holster when I got the chance. I had a hip holster for it, but if I had to wear the body armor, I'd have to change to the drop holster anyway, just like the EMP would switch to a holster on the MOLLE strap system on the chest of the vest. Inner pants holsters were for concealed carry when you didn't want to spook the civilians. On an active warrant, by the time I was all geared up, concealed carry was an impossibility.

"Did you know that this Deputy Wagner had a rep for roughing people up?" I asked.

Newman settled himself behind the wheel of his Jeep and shook his head. "I hadn't heard the rumor, and as far as we know, that's all it is."

"How well do you know Jim the pilot?"

"Well enough to roust him out of bed on a Saturday and get him to fly you from the main airport to here."

"You knew he was Bobby Marchand's friend, so he'd be motivated."

"I did."

"Is this your home base now?"

"It is."

"It's not exactly a great post for a marshal. Did you choose it, or did you piss someone off?"

He smiled wide enough for me to see it as he pulled the Jeep out on the runway and drove like we were a plane getting ready to take off. I realized that there didn't seem to be any other paved area nearby. We passed a shed with a windsock, but that was it. It was the definition of middle of fucking nowhere.

"I chose it."

I looked at him and he laughed. "Don't look at me like that, Blake. I know it's not a hotbed of career opportunities, but I met a woman on a case, and it sort of rearranged my priorities."

I grinned at him. "And she's local to here, I take it."

"Yeah."

"So, you sank your career to follow the love of your life to the Michigan wilderness?"

"No, but I decided that a quick rise through the ranks wasn't as important as being near the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with."

I spread my hands and said, "Hey, I don't throw stones at anyone's love life, Newman. My house has too much shiny glass on it, which reminds me, I promised to text them when I finally landed."

That made him laugh. It was good to hear the sound; it meant things hadn't gone completely to hell. It was bad, but he could still laugh. Some crime scenes stole laughter along with everything else. "It's nice I'm not the only one that has to text home. Some of the other marshals give me grief for it."

"Fuck them if their relationships aren't as good as ours," I said.

He laughed again. I smiled reflexively, typing on the phone. I was metaphysically tied to all the people I loved, which meant I could have just dropped my psychic shields and contacted at least some of them mind to mind, or they could have reached out to me, or in an emergency they could crash my shields, but that was damn distracting in the middle of a fight, so the deal was I'd text and call more like a regular Joe or Jill. Also, the other police were giving me enough grief about dating supernaturals, which was one of the politically correct terms for vampires, wereanimals, and anything else that wasn't strictly human. Once I'd have said straight human, but I'd been chastised for using the word straight. Between actual vocabulary guidelines for the job and civilians getting butt-hurt because of my word choices, I was thinking of just substituting the word fuck for the word they didn't like to see if they liked that better. If I was going to be offensive, I might as well go for broke.

I erased several texts and finally settled for "Landed safe. Love you. Miss you already." It seemed inadequate, but it was all true, and at least I'd remembered to text. Staying in touch when I was on the job out of town wasn't one of my best things, to say the least. Micah Callahan, one of my fiancŽs, was as bad as I was about it and traveled as much. Our mutual lovers had recently done an intervention to let us know we needed to do better.

The first return text binged on my phone. I wasn't surprised that it was Nathaniel Graison, one of my other fiancŽs, because he had been one of the main instigators of the intervention. His text said simply, "Thank you for texting. I know you don't understand why I need it. Love you back. I like that you miss me. Looking forward to the call tomorrow, or you back home before that." And there it was, the loving text turned into a nagging push. We had all agreed that I'd text when I arrived and that I'd call once a day if possible, or text again. Nathaniel was reminding me of what I'd agreed to do, which turned a loving text or phone call into an obligation, which kind of bugged me. The return texts came fast and furious after that, because the group text contained eight people, not including me. I'd actually been surprised at some of the lovers who had insisted on getting more long-distance attention and at the ones who were content with the status quo. Some of them answered in the group text, but others answered privately. I typed an answer to each one of them; only two made me smile. Jean-Claude's "Je t'aime, ma petite," and Nicky Murdock's "I know you love me. You don't have to keep texting me to prove it."

"I know it's none of my business, but how many people are you having to text while you're gone?"

"Enough," I said, and sighed. I scrolled through all the texts and realized I wasn't sure whom I had to call tomorrow morning if I was still here. I wouldn't know how long I'd be on the ground here until I knew more about the case. I put my phone away and said, "You didn't invite me here to talk about our personal lives, so what's up first on the crime busting?"

He smiled as he said, "Sheriff Leduc requested I introduce you before we head to the crime scene. We have to drive right by the sheriff's office, so it's not out of the way. Hell, you can see Bobby Marchand. Maybe you'll think of smarter questions to ask than I did."

"You were exactly what your name says when I met you, Newman, but that was a couple of years ago. You do okay on your cases."

"You checked up on me?" he asked, glancing away from the night black road; the headlights seemed to carve their way through the moonless night.

"I keep an eye on the newbies I meet."

"And I keep an eye on the careers of the marshals that I want to grow up to be," he said.

That made me laugh. "If you grow up any more, I'll need a ladder to shake your hand."

He joined me in the laughter, and we drove for a few minutes in companionable silence.

"It's a dark night up here," I said.

"The cloud cover is thick tonight, but if it clears off, you'll see stars here like I've never seen outside of the desert or the ocean."

"It's not just cloud cover, Newman. Last night was the dark of the moon, and tonight won't be much brighter. If Bobby Marchand has been a wereleopard-sorry, Ailuranthrope-for this long, he shouldn't even shift form this far from a full moon."

"It's one of the things that bothered me enough to try to delay executing him, and don't worry. I'm having trouble remembering all the new terms, too. Besides, we know that Bobby Marchand is a leopard, so we don't have to use the generic terms between us."

"Great. I appreciate that. I hate the new vocabulary. Do you have the warrant of execution in hand already?"

"Yeah, the judge e-mailed it to the sheriff's office and got it signed through DocuSign just hours after the body was discovered."

"I remember when getting the warrant faxed over was high-tech," I said.

"Yeah, it's all high-tech most of the time now. Fast and efficient, maybe a little too efficient."

"How much time is left on the warrant?" I asked.

"About sixty hours out of the original seventy-two. I should have called you sooner."

"Should isn't helpful, Newman. Concentrate on what we can do here and now. Second-guessing yourself just eats up your energy and time."

He glanced at me, then back at the road. "Maybe, but they've started to get really picky on extending the timeline on a warrant of execution."

Interview and Book Review: Serpentine (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 26) by Laurell K. Hamilton

We got a chance to ask Laurell a few questions during her book tour for the latest Anita Blake: Serpentine. Also, check out DeniseB's review of Serpentine at the end of the interview.

Welcome to I Smell Sheep! Have a moon pie and a glass of Kool-
Aid (It’s Sharkleberry Fin cause shark week is coming soon.

DeniseB: How many more books are you planning on writing in this series?
Laurell: I’d always seen the Anita Blake series as a mystery series which means there’s no end planned. I’ll keep writing the books as long as the readers and I are enjoying ourselves.

Sharon: If you made a bouquet of flowers to represent you. What flowers would you include?
Laurell: I was asked a question almost identical to this in my first college writing course when I was eighteen. I had no idea how to answer it, and I still don’t.

DeniseB: Do you have any plans for a spinoff series based on a few of the secondary characters from the Anita series.
LaurellNot really. Anita is a first-person narrative so without her as my camera on the world I’m not sure how that would work.

Sharon: If you could own any piece of art in the world, which one would you want?
Laurell: In college, it would have been The Incredulity of St. Thomas by Caravaggio. Now, I honestly don’t know.

DeniseB: How much of your personal life influences the stories?
Laurell: Not that much actually. In fact if anything my fiction is ahead of my personal life, not the other way around. Example, I was researching bondage and submission for the books before I entered the lifestyle myself. Just as Anita was poly before I realized I was, too.

Sharon: What is the nerdiest thing you own?
Laurell: Our dining room looks like an armory from Lord of the Rings. We own all but two of the weapons from the original movie trilogy.

Vampire hunter Anita Blake has managed to overcome everything she faces. But this time there's a monster that even she doesn't know how to fight...

A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita's fellow U.S. Marshal and best friend Edward. For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it's the first trip she gets to take with wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it's not all fun and games and bachelor parties...

In this tropical paradise Micah discovers a horrific new form of lycanthropy, one that has afflicted a single family for generations. Believed to be the result of an ancient Greek curse, it turns human bodies into a mass of snakes.

When long-simmering resentment leads to a big blowout within the wedding party, the last thing Anita needs is more drama. But it finds her anyway when women start disappearing from the hotel, and worse--her own friends and lovers are considered the prime suspects. There's a strange power afoot that Anita has never confronted before, a force that's rendering those around her helpless in its thrall. Unable to face it on her own, Anita is willing to accept help from even the deadliest places. Help that she will most certainly regret--if she survives at all, that is...

Edward and Donna are having a destination wedding in the Florida Keys, where a family has been afflicted with an unfamiliar strain of lycanthropy for generations. Anita, Micah, and Nathaniel head down there for some together time that has been largely lacking in their relationships. Even though Anita has every intention of just being Edward/Ted’s best man, and having a romantic weekend with her guys, trouble seems to find her. The wedding party is full of drama at every turn, and when the police are called to investigate a possible kidnapping, new problems arise for everyone involved.

Hamilton writes fantastic stories that are filled with sex, vampires, shifters, and monsters you can’t even imagine. After 26 books you would think that the stories would get boring or unimaginative, but she’s still got it and is going strong. I would say my only criticism is that there were not enough love/sex scenes. Her books are famous for them, and there was hardly any, even though there was a lot of focus on Anita and her poly relationships. In today’s day and age, this is a great storyline with sexual fluidity being prominent in the headlines. It would be nice if Hamilton explained a little more on how some of the relationships work for those that are not familiar with the new terms.

While leading heat-stricken and water-deprived Roman soldiers through the scorching desert to fight back against the Berber hordes, Quinlan uncovers a grave scheme that has the potential to obliterate his troops entirely.

In this issue, Master Quinlan has fought with the Roman army against Berbers for five years. His commander is Tacitus, and Quinlan is his most trusted centurion. He would gladly die for him…if he could die. And though he is in the Roman army, he not fighting for Rome, who has not always treated him well, but for himself, a free man. More so, six years ago he learned through the other ancient ones like the Master that they needed him to learn so they could determine if he would be their ally, or must be destroyed. Thinking the Master had more to worry about than searching for him, Quinlan is told to lead some men to a pass to cut off a Berber army, while his commander would lead the rest to surprise the enemy. Quinlan would find more than Berbers though.

This is well written, keeping to historical accuracy, while giving us more insight to Quinlan and his past.

Now a champion in the ancient arenas of Rome, Mr. Quinlan finds himself up against the fiercest of all of the gladiators. But his chances of survival outside the arena are even worse, as the Master closes in on Mr. Quinlan after years of searching!

* The origin of Mr. Quinlan from director Guillermo del Toro and writer David Lapham—begins here
!

The comic issue begins with  Mr. Quinlan as an arena gladioator in Rome, 55 A.D. At that time, he is known as Bellator Candidus, and almost undefeatable. But the Emperor is not impressed and feels his favorite warrior, Spiculus, will beat the white newcomer. Spiculus fought with honor, skill and dignity, something the vampire half-breed aspired to. And when Quinlan does defeat the other gladiator, the Emperor thinks he fights like a demon. It is at that moment a stranger appears—the Master.
It is great to see how Quinlan began with the first issue and now this second one. Hopefully, it will go all the way to the time when the Master first arrives in America on a plane, like the first book and in the TV series.

Anita Blake always seems to have some sort of drama going on in her life with at least one of her lover's. This time though, it's different because Damien really is going through something that she can't take care of just by shooting the problem or kicking its ass. Anita doesn't know how to fix the problem Damien is having, so she starts asking others in her circle if they know what's wrong with him and how to help him, but the advice she get's isn't what she's hoping for. Plus, Edward needs her to travel to Ireland and maybe bring Damien with her. Not something she's really wanting to do since Damien was held against his will there for many years by a sadistic vampire who they might have to deal with.

Damien is having problems with his girlfriend because even though he wants to solidify the triumvirate with Nathaniel and Anita, his girlfriend is super jealous and won't let him sleep with other people. Even if all he's doing is sleeping. Damien is having nightmares, the only problem is vampires don't have nightmares and they sure as heck don't sweat blood but Damien is and it's freaking him out.

When Edward calls Anita and asks her to come to Ireland to help him find out what vampires are killing humans there, I really thought I would see more of him after she arrives there, but that wasn't the case and that was a bit of a let down. Although a character that I didn't think I'd see again for a while did pop up in this book for a bit and I liked that.

This had a great story line, but the book itself was 708 pages long, so I thought there would be a lot of action, a lot of story or a lot of something that would keep me interested. Instead it seemed like this book was filled with a lot of talk about what they were going to do, how they were going to do it and just a lot of talking that really lead to nowhere. The core story was good but there was a lot of fluff added that didn't add to the story and just filled a lot of pages. A lot of the actual story gets bogged down by Anita's personal drama with her lovers. I've seen it in almost all of the 25 books in this series and while I know it's going to be there, it's getting old.

I found the first half of the book to be a little boring, at least until they all got on the plane and headed to Ireland to find out what vampires are doing all the killing there. There was a lot of lead up to this and seemed to be the main plot of the story besides Damien's nightmares and blood sweats. But the final battle seemed rushed, the final outcome was resolved in just a few pages and was a bit of a let down after such a long story and all the lead up to it. I'm a huge fan of this series and I'll continue to read the upcoming books but I hope we get more story and less fluff in the next book.

Anita has always kept Damian at arm’s length even though he is her vampire servant. In an interesting turn of events Anita finds that her triumpvirate of power with Damian and Nathaniel has some serious power and things are a changing. A large group of her lover’s head to Ireland to figure out why there is a vampire problem and who is really controlling the weird circumstances surrounding the deaths there.

The Anita Blake series has always been one of my favorites. This book is one of her larger ones and I enjoyed the story though it took longer than usual to get to the heart of it. The first half of the book focused on Anita’s relationships and preparing to go to Ireland. It seemed a little drawn out in comparison to the actual time span it was representing. If you are one that loves the hot and steamy sexual encounters that fills Anita’s life than you will be disappointed. There were very few sex scenes in this installment but still a great story and it is worth the time to read the book and continue on with this outstanding series.
