The stunning conclusion to the most innovative crime noir in comics! Will Cyrus solve Michael’s murder? Will Michael finally get the peace he deserves? If you think you know how the story ends, you are DEAD WRONG.

A thrilling end to the Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxicab mini-series. Cyrus solves the murder of Michael, but that isn't the end of this cabby's fare. Someone else has taken an interest in Cyrus, which means more comics from writer, and all around great guy, David Dwonch and artist Anna Lencioni, whom I've never met but is probably a great gal.

This series is for all ages and worth checking out. The story is well told through a great combination of writing and artwork.

One late night, Greydon Cross comes home to find his family slaughtered and Satan himself standing before him. Fueled with rage, he rushes towards Satan but is struck down before he could have his revenge. Upon his death, God appears before Greydon and gives him a choice. He could choose to go to heaven and enjoy eternity in Gods kingdom, or he could choose to go to Hell, where God would grant him powers to seek out Satan and destroy him. There was one catch however; once Satan was destroyed Greydon would have to become Satan himself.

His desire for revenge too strong to ignore, Greydon agrees to Gods terms and descends to hell on a mission to assassinate the devil and avenge his family. Upon finding himself in hell, Greydon must battle his way through an army of demons, all the while discovering the limitations of his new powers.
Issues #2-4

The Devil You Know is about the age old question: If given the power to do Good or Evil, what choices would you make. Many biblical stories and adventure fantasies play with this idea and Frank Mula combines the two, creating a fast moving action adventure. The main character, Greydon Cross, makes his first choice when God gives him a chance to live in peace in heaven or go to hell to for revenge. Issue #1 introduces us to Greydon Cross and the beginning of his journey into hell with the powers to destroy Satan and take his place. At the end of issue #1 is an interesting afterword by Mula. He explains where the idea for this story came from and some of the themes explored, like the need to become a monster to defeat one.

I love the premise, who doesn't love a good vs evil story? It moves at a quick pace with plenty of bloody battles, friendships forged and even an evil queen. The story is easy to follow and the digital artwork complements the dialogue. I I thought it was clever to make the cyclopes' speech bubbles shaped like their one eye. There is also plenty of sarcastic humor from our hero/anti-hero and a new twist on the heaven vs hell dynamic.

Overall this is an interesting comic and worth the great price of $.99 an issue. And I am curious to see what choice Greydon will make once he becomes the leader of hell.

“Look at these Archie vs.
Predator comic covers and weep at their glory.”—io9

As casualties continue to mount, it’s up to Betty and Veronica to put aside their differences if the gang hopes to rid Riverdale of the Predator menace—but can the girls keep their claws out of each other long enough to keep the Predator’s claws out of everyone?!
This is the last issue of the 4 issue series. In this one, Veronica tells Betty her father built a panic room in the house and they will take the wounded Archie and themselves and get inside it, then blow up the house with the Predator in it. The panic room should keep them safe. After they got Archie in a hospital bed reminisce of the diagnostic bed in Star Trek and get Archie stabilized, both girls head out to take on the Predator. I won’t spoil it for you, but there is a surprise ending I never saw coming.
The colors are so Archie comics, with blood and alien monster thrown in. Honestly, this was a fun series to read and one of the best mashups ever. If you don’t want to watch your favorites from the Archie comics get it, then I would suggest not to read this. But if you enjoy the Predator movies and grew up on Archie, be set for fun and blood.

I give Archie vs. Predator issue #4 (of 4) 5 sheep

“Genuinely creepy and engaging.”—Mark Millar
Kept prisoner by a monster of her own creation, Emmy is forced to confront the truth about the evil witch of Harrow County and the power she wields!
* Featuring two backup stories exclusive to the single issues!
* The chilling ongoing series from Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook (The Sixth Gun) continues!
Poor Emmy has been running all night from her father, the townsfolk who want to lynch her as a witch and even herself as she wondered if she deserved to be killed. She ran into a dark thing who said she, or the witch Hester, had commanded it. Upset that she forgot about it, too. When she runs away from it, out into the road and is almost hit by a truck driven by the town pharmacist, who kidnaps her and takes her to his home. It is there he makes her remember who she really is and even who many of the local folk are. But I won’t give any spoiler here. But go get it—there are surprises in store.

Harrow County becomes less and less a comic book and more and more a spooky folktale mountain folk told around the hearth on a cool autumn night in October, one about witches, demons, and ghosts. A creepy, graveyard of great animation that lures you in.

Comic Review: THE VALIANT #4 (of 4) [VALIANT NEXT]

The darkness is now! The heroes of the Valiant Universe make their triumphant last stand at the end of all things as superstar creators Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, and Paolo Rivera bring their magnum opus to its gut-wrenching conclusion!

The Immortal Enemy has all but won and only Bloodshot and Geomancer are left to stand against his darkness. Are they willing to save humanity if it means losing their own – and each other?

Variant covers
I don't hide my Valiant Comic hard-on. I'm relatively new to the Valiant Universe so I was thrilled when they came out with the Valiant Next series. Character mash-ups galore! The Valiant is a four issue series that brings together some of Valiant's most popular characters. Namely the Geomancer, Bloodshot (swoon), the Eternal Warrior and new-comber Ninjak (swoon).

Issue #4 is the conclusion of war between the Eternal Darkness and our heroes. Wow, didn't see that ending coming. Can't give any details or it will be spoiled. There is suspense and even a little humor. I loved when Mr. Flay (Eternal Darkness) refers to Bloodshot as Kay's little action figure. The humor is Valiant just released a Bloodshot MiniMate toy <G>. Below is a picture of my own personal one :) Seriously, how could I not?!
still not sure if I should open it and play :)
As always with Valiant comics the artwork is superb and bold complimenting the writing seamlessly. I was caught up in the suspense and taken by surprise at the ending. This series is also the jumping off point for Bloodshot Reborn, which you know I'll be checking out.
If you are one of those readers who don't like to wait for the next issue, now is the time to grab all four!

Comic Review: Sally of the Wasteland #1-#5 Titan Comics

Sally of the Wasteland #1-#5
written by Victor Gischler
Genres: Horror, Science Fiction
32pp
Format: Softcover
Frequency: Monthly
Age:15+
Titan Comics

Southern Louisiana, 82 years after the Fall.
The apocalypse has come and gone, leaving behind a withered, ravaged landscape of wreckage and mutant crawfish. Still, you gotta laugh, and Sally does, often using her beloved shotgun, Bertha, as the punchline!

Inspired more by lust than common sense, and by a teenage desire to protect Tommy, the object of her desires, Sally leaves her bar job and joins the deranged crew of the Mississippi Duchess on a mission into the remains of New Orleans.

Saving the remains of civilisation plays second best to keeping her sweetheart safe as our smart and sexy princess of the wild frontier runs a gauntlet of gigantic genetic freaks and roving gangs of blood-hungry barbarians!

The ever-so-cute but ever-so-slightly-insane Sally is the wayward daughter of writer Victor Gischler (X-Men, Angel & Faith, Noir) and artistic up-and-comer Tazio Bettin. This first issue in a fantastic new series proves Armageddon can be fun!

WITH A VARIANT COVER FROM REVIVAL AND HACK/SLASH’S TIM SEELEY!
I love me some post-apocalyptic pulp and, boy howdy, did this series deliver. The fever dream Victor Gischler must have had to come up with this one, I don't even know how much mescaline it'd take, because I thought Beasts of the Southern Wild was gonna be the craziest post-apocalyptic tale set in a ravaged Louisiana. Oh, how I was wrong.
The world is a wasteland, quite literally and in keeping with the series title, with mutated monstrosities taking up the space left in the wake of humanity’s downfall. Oh, sure, there are the pockets of survivors spread here and there, but society is a distant memory and for one brassy young vixen, namely Sally, all the world amounts to is a lot of hard work and one dreamy hunk named Tommy. So when Tommy raises his hand to help a stranger with a weird piece of technology head out to New Orleans for answers and maybe one last chance at restoring civilization.

With all the unapologetic panache of a couple true pulp hounds, Victor Gischler and Tazio Betton offer up one of the wildest dystopian thrill rides I've seen in a good long while. Sally, at first glance, might seem like pure cheesecake, but her personality is as charming as it is borderline psychotic. She is no damsel, and she's no hero either, but she is all bad-ass with her shotgun Bertha and whatever other weapons she has at arm's reach. The rag-tag bunch she boats down the Mississippi with are all afforded moments for their own foibles to shine, whenever the ceaseless pitfalls and perils don't have them fighting for their lives.

The series might just be the kind of ultra-B movie fare you didn't know you were waiting for. If there is something to complain about, it is one particular swerve in the storyline that feels like a jumping of the tracks onto a completely different storyline, but even then the zany and the heart of the issue, Sally protecting Tommy, are never lost.

If this series was a movie, it would find itself in good company with the likes of Escape from New York and Army of Darkness. If you like the sounds of that, find these comics. If it doesn't, run and hide before the Bamazons get cha.

The final chapter in the Strain Trilogy—by Guillermo del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan—begins here!
It’s been two years since the Master’s plan succeeded and a near apocalypse coated the world in darkness. Now able to roam freely, the Master’s legion of vampires rule the world—a horrifying police state where humans are harvested for blood.
Known as the Born, he works with the rebellion, but he’s a vampire . . . Who, or what, is Mr. Quinlan? And what, exactly, is his connection to the Master? This issue sheds light on the past of the mysterious and badass bloodsucker slayer who is bent on destroying the Master’s strain and ending his reign.

The final chapter in the Strain Trilogy—by Guillermo del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan—begins here!

This issue of the last book in The Strain trilogy is about Mr. Quinlan’s past and his connection to the Master. The Master tells the story of how he served the Roman Emperor Caligula. For his payment, he is given seven virgins. Not for sex, but for their blood. But the last victim is not a virgin, and is with child. He wanted to kill the unborn, but got called away to help the emperor at the time, he returns to find the soldiers took her, but she killed two of the guards and escaped. She finds a cave, where she gives birth and raises the child, ignoring the call of her master. When Quinlan is almost grown up, his mother is killed by the Master and he escapes. Through years of fighting as a gladiator, he is eventually bought by a Roman senator who realizes what he is and who he serves, battling in wars. His being able to walk in the sunlight helps him. His life ends up serving the other Ancients against the Master until he helps the humans fighting the vampires in New York City.
This issue is all about a true badass vampire. He may not be handsome as many paranormal romances write vampires as, but he truly has an interesting past. He may not be stone-faced ass kicker like Blade, but he holds his own as well as that daywalker.

Crowbar Medicine reaches its gut-wrenching climax! Cut off from backup, Clev, Saffron, and uneasy ally Terminus confront the scientist behind the ability-granting Power Chip. Still shaken by personal tragedy, and going up against a trio of Power Chip users at Dr. Morgenstern’s side, Clev is about to take on the most vicious fight of his life!

Clevenger's professional life clashed with her personal life once before, as the one guy on the planet with the wherewithal to contend with full-blown superhumans, and a man now with daughters to care for. The last time they clashed, his family was devastated and he wound up in a supermax prison. Judging by the events of the third issue, history may be about to repeat itself.

The fourth issue reveals Clevenger physically scarred like never before, in the aftermath of seeing one of Morgenstern's vigilante superhumans accidentally kill his youngest daughter. There's no going back from that, and while he isn't the type of guy to wear his heart on his sleeve, his grief looks to take him to a state of mind that will have him letting loose with unbridled fury. The F.B.I. and the rest of the law enforcement know he's bad news and have wiped their hands of him. Well, excerpt for Saffron.

To say that now it's personal would be an understatement of a woeful degree.

When the death scene happened in the third issue, I half-expected a soap opera attempt at emotional turmoil. But this is Dan Jolley writing and he doesn’t seem too interested in writing schmaltz. And Clevenger seems so out of place wallowing in grief. Well, these final two issues graphically depict just how little he wallows, and just how little he cares for his own well-being in seeking out Morgenstern.

Without giving away how this five-part series wraps up, I will say it provides a clear portrait of Clevenger's mindset. Even when pushed to the extreme, he is undeterred. Even when everything crashes down around him, he just keeps getting up and doing the one thing he seems born to do: stomp superhumans. It doesn't end pretty for him, and it should have been clear to readers from the get-go that a happy ending wasn't in the cards, but the ending we are given seems well-suited for a character like Clevenger.

After a contract-killer shaman ambushes our heroes, undercover demon Barnabus Black takes a group of witches back to his safe house, where he equips them with a massive arsenal to prepare for a final showdown with the werewolf mafia.
* Covers by Dave Johnson!

Issue #5

Barnabus Black infiltrates the werewolf mafia’s mansion, only to be overtaken by an army of angry monsters, a dangerous wizard, and their werewolf godfather!
* Featuring covers by Dave Johnson!
* By Victor Gischler (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spike—A Dark Place, Punisher MAX, X-Men)and Juan Ferreyra(Colder, Rex Mundi)!

And then there was one. Despite his best efforts, Barnabus just can't seem to keep the coven of witches from being picked off one by one. Holed up in a shack in the bayou, there is one witch left (Zell) with the eye of fates and if she dies, then the eye could wind up in the wrong hands.

The fourth issue, "Her Demon Lover," kicked off with Malcolm Drake, the notorious mage for hire, incinerating one witch, but taking a seriously humbling ass-whoopin' from Barnabus in the process. Not all bad from Drake though, since he got a good look at the mystical necklace Barnabus is wearing that apparently protects him from magic attacks. With Drake tucking tail, Barnabus and Zell head out to his hideout and set off a little magic of their own. Bow chicka bow wow.

The fifth issue, "Dog Pile," begins with a rather out-of-the-blue encounter with a priest and a nun that know their way around firearms and have marching orders: "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." Barnabus and Zell just can't catch a break it seems. The grand finale of the mini-series takes things back to where they all began, in Cassian's mansion as his newborn son remains in serious danger of being killed to ensure Cassian holds on to power. And Drake lays in wait among the werewolf clan to take the eye and Barnabus' nifty necklace, too.

This high-octane mini-series wound up keeping the pedal to the medal for these final two issues. Lots of action, lots of swerves, and one big and bloody finish. Not a lot of room for introspection and soliloquies in this series, as everything on the page exists to keep the action moving. Between Gischler's firm grip on each character's motivations and frailties, and Ferreyra's pulpy presentation, much of that action practically lept off the page.

There were a couple of moments where story threads felt like they got snipped quite abruptly, but nothing was glaringly unfulfilled and the series never really made the promise of expounding on the final resolutions after the fact. Everything ended on a really satisfying note, with just enough elbow room to offer a glimpse for future iterations of Barnabus and this world. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Comic Review: Quantum and Woody! issues #1-4 from Valiant Comics + giveaway

the goat doesn't appear until issue #4
Quantum and Woody!
Valiant comics
All are T+ rating
32 pages
$3.99

Comic Book City Con was a small event, but packed with high quality comic book goodness. While there, I met Alejandro Arbona (editor) and Hunter Gorinsen (Director of Marketing) from Valiant Comics. One look at their selection and I knew I'd found another great indie publisher. They carry lots of adventure/fantasy/action/horror and superhero comics. The one that caught my eye was Quantum and Woody! It's about a humorous superhero team (when they aren't beating the crap out of each other) who fight monsters while trying to not let all their atoms fly apart. They gave me issues 1-4 to review.

I love this series. The artwork alone makes me laugh and says so much about the character's personalities (check out the covers below). Add that with the snarky dialogue and you get a winning combination. The first 4 issues alternate between the present and past giving the reader Woody and Eric’s back story. The flashbacks are inserted seamlessly in the story and help give emotional depth to our two fearless (and fearful) heroes.

When we first meet Woody he is hiding from his bookie, who he owes a lot of money too, and having a one night stand. He is pretty much a douche. Eric is smart, disciplined and in the military. He is also wound so tight he is just hairs breath from going medieval on someone… and he does. The two brothers (Woody was a foster child in Eric’s family) meet for the first time in years at their dad’s funeral. After beating the crap out of each other (they do this a lot) they decide to work together and solve their dad’s murder. And there is an experiment gone wrong that gives them unstable superpowers, but there is one little draw back to it. They must be in close proximity of each other or all their protons will come apart and they will disappear.

This is a fast paced action story with a little drama and lots of crazy thrown in. You did see the goat on the cover of issue #1? I think just about anyone will enjoy this ride.
