Character Confessions: Gage Powell (Dead Man's Deal by Jocelynn Drake) + giveaway

Tomorrow Dead Man's Deal (The Asylum Tales #2) releases and I can't wait. Everyone knows how much I love dark urban fantasy and the first book Angel's Ink (review here) didn't disappoint. Great characters and Jocelynn's expert world building skills make this a series for any UF fan. Poor Gage, her hero, doesn't seem to be able to catch a break and he has a few things to say to his author...

By Gage Powell, the Asylum Tales series, and Jocelynn Drake

Gage Powell here, and I’m glad to be in the driver’s seat for once. Now it’s my turn to take control; even though my author and partner, Jocelynn Drake, has already started backseat driving. (Be polite, Gage. Watch your language, Gage. Don’t talk about your bodily functions, Gage.) Geez. It’s like going on a job interview with your mother.

Jocelynn and I have done a ton of interviews to promote Angel’s Ink and Dead Man’s Deal (books 1 and 2 of the Asylum Tales series), but she’s always been the one asking me the questions so I tell you about myself and the world I live in. Today’s I’ve been asked what it’s like working with Jocelynn.

Let me paint you a picture.

You know those little metal hooks a dentist uses to scrape your teeth and poke around in all the really sore spots in your mouth? Jocelynn like to pull open all my old and still-healing wounds, and then she digs in with that metal hook while asking, “How does that make you feel?”

[Jocelynn: Really? You’re going to make me out to be a sick and twisted sadist? I don’t get pleasure out of your pain and suffering. I’m just trying to give readers a complete understanding of how you feel and what’s happening in your world.]

And you think readers need to know so much detail about my sex life?

[Jocelynn: Well, I don’t think readers need to know the intimate details of your sex life, but I thought those scenes would add some needed levity to the book.]

Levity?!? You think my sex life is funny?

[Jocelynn: Actually, I find your social life funny.]

Oh. Ha. Ha. Ha. Like you’ve got any room to talk. Stopping at the grocery for milk is a big social event for you.

[Jocelynn: Gage, you’ve gotten off topic.]

Yeah, I noticed that. It’s amazing how that happens when the topic of sex comes up.

[Jocelynn: Focus, please.]

And that’s why I’d be completely lost without Jocelynn. Life in Low Town is always full of the unexpected. When I’m not dodging the Grim Reaper or running from the Ivory Towers, then I’m dealing with cranky vampires, angry werewolves, elves who want to steal my girlfriend, cereal-munching gargoyles, and incubi with relationship issues. And that’s just on a good day! Jocelynn is good at cutting through all the chaos to get at the heart of the matter.

[Jocelynn: Thanks, Gage. With any luck, we’ll get around to telling how you gave the Grim Reaper dating advice and how you almost became the head of a local vampire nest.]

Pfft… nah. People just want to hear about my sex life.

[Jocelynn: You’re ridiculous.]

That’s why you love me. Come on, Joce. Let’s go back to Asylum. I’ll give you a new tattoo.

The End

In a world where elves, faeries, trolls, werewolves, and vampires swim free in a sea of humanity, sometimes you need an edge. Looking for a little love? Need some luck? Desperate for revenge? Gage can give you what you need. The most talented tattoo artist in town, he knows the right symbol and the right mix of ingredients and ink to achieve your heart's desire. One tattoo is all it takes. But remember, everything has its price. . . .

Gage learned that lesson long ago, in ways he'd rather not remember. But the cruel and powerful wizards in the dreaded Ivory Towers he escaped aren't about to let him forget. Though Gage has managed to stay out of sight, he can't outrun the past forever. The wizards know Gage is using forbidden magic, and they intend to punish him for his transgressions.

Too bad if innocent humans and monsters—entire cities—get in the way. They will quell a nascent magical uprising and Gage will be the sacrifice they need. First, though, they have to find him . . .

About the author:
website-fb-twitter-blog
Love comes in many varied forms. There is the love of family, love of country, and love of chocolate. But for Jocelynn Drake, one truly treasured love is the love of a good story. This Midwestern native spends the majority of her time lost in the strong embrace of a good book. When she’s not hammering away at her keyboard, frowning at her monitor, or curled up with a book, she can usually be found cuddling with her cats, Harley and Demona, walking her dog Max, or flinging curses at the TV while playing a video game. Outside of books, cats, and video games, she is completely enamored of Bruce Wayne, Ezio Auditore, travel, tattoos, explosions, fast cars, and Anthony Bourdain (but only when he’s feeling really cranky).
