Movie Review: Red Notice (Netflix)

Red Notice
Nov 5, 2021
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Writer: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, Ritu Arya
Rating: PG-13 (Violence and Action|Strong Language|Some Sexual References)
Genre: Comedy, Action
Runtime: 1h 57m
Distributor: Netflix
In the world of international crime, an Interpol agent attempts to hunt down and capture the world's most wanted art thief.

My husband and I watched Red Notice because we love action/comedy movies and all three main actors. We were not disappointed! Red Notice was a lot of fun. Some things were predictable but there were a few surprise twists you don't see coming.

Dwayne Johnson does comedy well. Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool in pretty much every role he plays. Gal Gadot won't win any acting awards, but she is beautiful!

If you love this type of movie, then you'll love this.

My husband says any movie with Gal Gadot gets a minimum of 4 sheep... he gives Red Notice 4.5 Sheep

I give it

Movie Review: Jungle Cruise (2021)

Jungle Cruise (2021)
Jul 30, 2021
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
Writer: Michael Green, Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Edgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons

Runtime: 2h 7m
Walt Disney Pictures
Rating: PG-13 (Adventure Violence)
Genre: Fantasy, Comedy, Adventure, Action
Join fan favorites Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt for the adventure of a lifetime on Disney's JUNGLE CRUISE, a rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank's questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila--his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities--possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank and their fate--and mankind's--hangs in the balance.

I watched Jungle Cruise on Disney+ with my husband and 20-year-old daughter. We all enjoyed it.

We've all ridden the Disney World Jungle Cruise so it was fun to see all the references to the actual Disney attraction. So many silly puns. The movie is a cross between The Mummy, Indiana Jones, and Pirates of the Caribbean. The opening scenes are more chaotic than anything, but the action evens out and is more enjoyable.

The humor is geared toward a younger crowd, but there was a cool twist that I didn't see coming!

I wouldn't pay the extra $30 to view on Disney+. Wait for it to be free there or wait till it is at a regular price On Demand. If you are going to the theaters, this is definitely a big screen type of movie.

Sheep Movie Review: Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

Jumanji: The Next Level
Dec 13, 2019
Directed By: Jake Kasdan
Written By: Jake KasdanJeff PinknerScott Rosenberg
Cast:
Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina
Runtime: 100 minutes
Rating: PG-13 (for adventure action, suggestive content and some language)
Genre: Action & AdventureComedy
Studio: Sony Pictures
In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world's most dangerous game.

Went to see Jumanji: The Next Level with my husband and 18-year-old daughter. We saw the first one and loved it. But if you've seen the first one, then Jumanji: The Next Level gets a little old. There are some new characters but it is still the same story and humor. Dwayne Johnson acting like Dani Devito's character, and Kevin Heart acting like Danny Glover's character was pretty funny for about 30 minutes then it lost its charm.

If you haven't seen the first movie then I think you will like this one. Jumanji: The Next Level had some entertaining parts...and one that had the whole theater laughing.

Unless you have young kids, you might want to wait for the DVD on this one.

Sheep Movie Review: Rampage (2018)

Rampage (2018)
Apr 13, 2018
Directed By: Brad Peyton
Written By: Ryan Engle, Carlton Cuse, Ryan Condal, Adam Sztykiel
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jake Lacy,  Joe Manganiello
Rating: PG-13 (for sequences of violence, action and destruction, brief language, and crude gestures)
Genre: Action & Adventure, Drama, Science Fiction & Fantasy
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it's soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

I'm just gonna say this up front...a gigantic mutant sheep would have been an awesome addition...just saying.

Went to see Rampage with my husband. It is pretty much what you think it will be. Generic and predictable action movie writing. But how can you not want to watch a gigantic mutant alligator, a gigantic mutant wolf (part flying squirrel and porcupine) and a gigantic albino gorilla with a sick sense of humor fight it out in Chicago?

The writers didn't even try to make the science fiction plausible. Basically they Jurrasic Park some animals, but thanks to gene editing and some fancy science stuff they made a virus that can make these animals turn into gigantic hybrids in 24 hours.

If you are going because of Joe Manganiello, don't blink.

If you don't have anything else to do and just love the movie-going experience, then grab a matinee. The first two scenes in the movie are fantastic...there are a few other scenes sprinkled throughout that rocked.

There are lots of special effects that look good on the big screen. But you can probably just catch this one on TV.

My husband I both give it 3 1/2 "Us Sheep got to stick together"

Sheep Talk: My Christmas Experience! (Plus a movie review—Jumanji—as a sidebar...)

Reviewer Jeanie G shares her story... as well as a review of Jumanji and SharonS adds her thoughts on Jumanji too!

Traveling to our children's homes for Christmas is always packed with a myriad of activities and rushing. Wrapping then packing a truckload of gifts and hoping for decent weather is always the first hurdle. This year, not so bad. We made it to our daughter's the 23rd of December and had plenty of time to prepare for our Christmas Eve get together. We are her "basement renters" in the winter when we visit the area...as my 7 year old grandson reminds me! It's easier for him to visit us in his basement than it is to travel 4 hours...plus he thinks he can play by Nana's rules down there instead of Mom's rules upstairs. Sly dog!

Anyway, Christmas Eve afternoon and evening was hectic with the adults, two 7 year olds, a 5 year old and 2 one year old children. Trust me, you couldn't walk through the house without kicking a kid, dog or present. My son in law is a little OCD so the wrapping paper was his nemesis for a couple hours. It all was heartwarming and fun of course.

Christmas for us was up at 5:30 to be at our son's by 6 to watch the 3 other grandchildren open their gifts. Then back to our daughter's to finish watching the other 2 finish their gifts and help put some supper together. Trust me after those 3 days, I was ready for some quiet time! SOOO...the day after Christmas my husband and I asked two grandchildren (7&5) if they wanted to see a movie. I figured "Great", two hours being entertained then some supper then home to kick the feet up. HMMMPH.!

We get to the theater about 20 minutes early for the 1:30 showing of "Jumanji". I noticed the parking area was packed so as my husband was parking the car, we went in to get tickets. Not a long line (Whew). But that was because the 1:30 showing was already SOLD OUT! The ticket sales lady said "we still have some seats for the 3:00 movie but they are almost gone". Of course I ask for 2 seniors and 2 children before she had time to put out the closed sign!

We decide to eat a late lunch before returning 30 minutes prior to show time. Hey, I saw the lines at the first visit! Again my husband drops us off to park and while walking in I take the tickets from my purse and YIKES, there are only 3 tickets. Now, I didn't count the tickets when I received them earlier, nor did I even look at the amount I paid while swiping my card. I rush to the ticket window and plead for just ONE more ticket..even if it's just a space along the wall...but NOOOO. So, I have to give my husband the bad news that only one of us gets the pleasure of seeing the movie with our angelic grandchildren! I could tell how crestfallen he was as he hurried back the way he came yelling..."I'll be back in a couple hours" over his shoulder. Traitor.

Remember, we are 30 minutes early (25 by this time) and as we go find the theater number I notice a snaking line down one wall turning to snake down the opposite wall... hmm... I'm thinking maybe it's for the bathroom. No such luck. It's the line to enter the theater for the showing! Again, remember I have a 7 and 5 year old that I am sure are going to ask for candy or popcorn any minute and I am NOT giving up my place in line. As luck would have it, they didn't, I didn't have to leave the line, and they opened the doors after 15 minutes of waiting in line.

Trust me, if I hadn't already promised the movie, I would never go through all this headache. I couldn't understand why it was so crowded on a Tuesday afternoon with 2 theaters showing the same movie. Then I looked at my tickets again and someone said: "it's always busy on $5.00 Tuesdays!" OOOHHH, school is out and all movies, all day are only $5.00! Sort of makes me wish we were staying one more day and went to the movie on Wed.!

Jumanji (2017)

Dec 20, 2017
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, Bobby Cannavale
Rating: PG-13 (for adventure action, suggestive content and some language)
Genre: Action & AdventureDramaKids & FamilyScience Fiction & Fantasy
Runtime: 112 minutes
Studio: Columbia Pictures
When four high-school kids discover an old video game console with a game they've never heard of--Jumanji--they are immediately drawn into the game's jungle setting, literally becoming the avatars they chose: gamer Spencer becomes a brawny adventurer (Dwayne Johnson); football jock Fridge loses (in his words) "the top two feet of his body" and becomes an Einstein (Kevin Hart); popular girl Bethany becomes a middle-aged male professor (Jack Black); and wallflower Martha becomes a badass warrior (Karen Gillan). What they discover is that you don't just play Jumanji--you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they'll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves--or they'll be stuck in the game forever...

Jeanie G's Review

SO, on to the movie. "Jumanji " was worth the wait. I am glad I bought the 3:00 tickets and I'm glad I waited in the line to get a seat. I really loved the first Jumanji movie with Robin Williams and I also loved the sequel. They did a great job of making the old new and keeping the humor and excitement alive. The first movie took place in real life "outside" of the game. This edition takes place "inside" the game and I thought that was brilliant. If you are any type of gamer (experienced or not) you will appreciate the storyline and innuendos written into the script. High school students serving detention find an old Atari game (ancient to them) while cleaning out a storeroom and decide to play. After choosing their characters then get "transported" into the game and must save the world of Jumanji to get out alive. The "Rock" Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart are hilarious. I had not seen any reviews or looked at any ratings and didn't even know who was starring in this film. If I had I might have been a little leery of the type of humor but I was pleasantly surprised.

Now even though they kept it clean (even for a PG-13), I counted a couple of "Oh shits" and a couple "bad ass" and two chaste kisses. No harsh foul language or nudity or sexual innuendos. WHEW! Of course, what does my 5 1/2 year old (going on 20) remember most about the film? One of the high school girls was a "bad ass" and there were two kisses. Plus, one of the girls was turned into a male character and she had lost her phone that had been "attached" to her hand!

I don't know the critic's rating nor do I care, the three of us laughed out loud during the move, neither of them asked to get out of their seat for anything and the movie was highly entertaining! I would see it again and I rarely give that kind of accolade. Only "Dirty Dancing" and "Sixth Sense" earned that from me.

If you get a chance, grab a grandchild and spend the day eating, standing in line and laughing at a really well done movie!

The whole day got 5 "gleaming" sheep from me!

Sharon's Review
The Breakfast Club meets Tomb Raider.

Went to see Jumanji with my husband and 16-year-old daughter. The trailer pretty much sums up the movie. It was silly fun with 13-year-old boy humor (dick jokes galore) but predictable. Pretty much a cookie-cutter action comedy with stereotype characters aimed at the preteen crowd.

It is worth checking out if you like that kind of movie, but you can wait for the DVD. It would have gotten a 3 Sheep rating from me, but Dwayne Johnson is nice to look at, and the ending was touching.

We all gave it 3 1/3 "Dance fighting" Sheep

Movie Review: Central Intelligence (2016)

Central Intelligence (2016)
June 17, 2016 (USA)
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Screenplay: Rawson Marshall Thurber, Ike Barinholtz, David Stassen,Peter Steinfeld
Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart
Bullied as a teen for being overweight, Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) shows up to his high school reunion looking fit and muscular. While the0e, he finds Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart), a fast-talking accountant who misses his glory days as a popular athlete. Stone is now a lethal CIA agent who needs Calvin's number skills to help him save the compromised U.S. spy satellite system. Together, the former classmates encounter shootouts, espionage and double-crosses while trying to prevent worldwide chaos.

Went to see this with the husband and 15 year-old daughter. We are big Hart and Johnson fans. The movie is exactly what the trailer promises. It was full of laugh out loud moments, as in the whole theater was laughing. There was a decent story line with a few twists and turns, nothing you probably won't figure out.

This is a silly and entertaining movie. They show a few bloopers at the end. I will be wanting to see the full gag reel.

If you are looking for a few juvenile laughs then this is worth a matinee price.

Movie Review: San Andreas (2015)

San Andreas (2015)
Director: Brad Peyton
Writers: Allan Loeb, Chad Hayes, Carlton Cuse, Carey Hayes
Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario
PG-13 | 114 min

Action, Drama, Thriller
29 May 2015 (USA)
In the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California, a rescue-chopper pilot makes a dangerous journey across the state in order to rescue his daughter.

This movie takes off at the beginning and doesn't let up till the end.  The action and suspense is done well, but by the end of the movie you are thinking "Seriously? Again?" The lady next to me was literally on the edge of her seat...leaning forward. She gasped at all the appropriate moments and I think she even covered her mouth with her hand at one point. If I didn't know better I would think she was a plant by the studio <G>.

I saw the movie with my husband and 14 year old daughter. It is straight up action with all the disaster movie cliches. You've got the recently divorced couple who must work together to save their beautiful well-adjusted daughter and then find love again. There is some cheese in the dialogue, especially with the over dramatic scientist who saw it coming, but no one would listen to, and lots of soul-bearing moments. Plus all the over top no-way-would-they-survive-that scenes. They follow the formula to the letter.

In spite of all that, it is an entertaining movie. Big special effects, edge of your seat action (obviously) and if you like the trailer you will like the movie. This is probably best appreciated on the big screen and worth a matinee price if you are an action movie junkie. And spending two hours watching Dwayne Johnson isn't a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Movie Review: Hercules (2014)

Hercules (2014)Director: Brett Ratner
Writers: Ryan Condal , Evan Spiliotopoulos
98 min - Action | Adventure - 25 July 2014 (USA)

Stars:
Dwayne Johnson ...Hercules (sexy)
Ian McShane ...Amphiaraus (funny)
John Hurt ...Lord Cotys (mean)
Rufus Sewell ...Autolycus (sexy)
Aksel Hennie ... Tydeus (crazy)
Ingrid Bolsø Berdal ... Atalanta (sexy)
Reece Ritchie ...Iolaus (sexy)
Joseph Fiennes ...King Eurystheus (sexy)
Tobias Santelmann ... Rhesus (sexy)

Having endured his legendary twelve labors, Hercules, the Greek demigod, has his life as a sword-for-hire tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord.

All in all an entertaining movie. It wasn't the story I thought I would see. When we meet Hercules he has already completed his labors and is now part of a mercenary band bad asses who take care of leaders problems for gold. There is a cool twist to the legend of how Hercules was able to complete the labors. There was a betrayal I didn't see coming and then some major ass kicking and revenge. There was also a little bit of humor.

Some parts seem to drag a bit before you get to the good stuff, but that's okay because...have you seen the cast?! Holy three headed dogs there was some sexy man candy running all over the place. Yeah, there are two sexy women too. You know those cool scenes in the trailer of Hercules slaying all the monsters? Yeah, that is just a quick flashback montage that plays at the beginning of the movie...seriously.

yes, the amazon warrior woman wore that...sigh...she must have abs of steel since she doesn't need protective armor like the men.
You can wait for the DVD and not miss much, but at the end when he is chained up and yells "MY NAME IS HERCULES!!!" it is quite a chilling moment on the big screen. If you want to see an action movie (assuming you've already seen Guardians of the Galaxy) this is a better option than Lucy. And did I mention abs, biceps and quadriceps, Oh my!?

If you are into fast paced blow s**t up action movies, this movie is for you! If you are into smexy military men and women, this movie is also for you! G.I. Joe:Retaliation has it all: a great balance of action, humor, touchy feely, and special effects. The only complaint I have is during some of the action scenes the camera shots were switching so fast I couldn’t keep up with what was going on and it could possibly send you into a seizure if you aren't careful.

I wanted to pull for the bad guys just as much as the good because everyone was bad ass in the good way. I haven’t read any of the G.I. Joe comics, but since it's a reboot of the franchise there are some twists I don’t want to giveaway for longtime fans. I thought Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum’s comedic chemistry was a little forced, but the rest of the cast worked together well.

I thought the special effects were done well and if they weren't I didn't notice because I was caught up in the action and story, so who cares! Is this just like Transformers with live people instead of robots? Hell yeah! This is one I will want to own.

And sorry about that London, but someone had to be an example…

Roadblock, Dwayne Johnson, GI Joe, movie review

There were so many great humorous lines I don’t know which one to pick for my rating… I think I will go with:

4.5 “the quicker blower upper” Sheep

Sharon Stogner (edit by Kalpar)

Katie's Point of View

Pretty much everything Sharon just touched on was dead-on. Action was killer good, even the super slow-mo parts, and if the shaky camera had slowed down a bit I would have enjoyed these moments more.

Ninjas are always amazing and if your name is Snake Eyes, then baby, get ready for some Katie lovein! Man is a dream boat setting sails for the sea of love and always has been.

Some cheesy dialog moments all around, but those were to be expected.  A few major plot inconsistencies left me frustrated, adding a few extra minutes of scenes here and there would have put this one over the top.

Overall, if you love action for the sake of action and cool gadgets then this one is for you. Yo, Joe!

Sheep Movie Review: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

This review is brought to you by Following the Nerd

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (PG)
Directed by: Brad Peyton
Starring: Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán and Michael Caine
In all fairness, when a sequel to a mediocre movie comes out and the original star is absent – in this case Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Brendan Frazer – it’s hard to imagine it being that big a deal. And in fairness, Journey 2 isn’t going to set the movie world alight but with Dwayne Johnson being his charismatic self, Michael Caine having an embarrassing amount of fun and Luis Guzman being, well, we just like to see Guzman on the screen, the fun level is amped to MAX.
With little time being spend on explaining why Sean (Hutcherson) isn’t with his uncle from the first movie (Frazer) but rather is now living with his mum (Kristin Davis) and stepdad (Johnson), we pick up in the middle of a bike chase. It seems that Sean is now a rebel who is searching for his grandfather (Caine) who has been missing for two years. However, his search gets him in trouble with the law as he breaks into a satellite research centre to get a coded message he believes leads to The Mysterious Island and must have been sent by his grandad. Luckily his new stepdad Hank is not only friends with the police (charges dropped) but also is an ex-marine code breaker (code deciphered). Always looking to be accepted by Sean, Hank offers to pay for a trip to the South Pacific so they can find the island – or rather prove once and for all that his grandad is mad and take the boy home to live a normal life. However when they show the co-ordinates to the island to the various guides available, only captain Gabato (Guzman) and his daughter Kailani (Hudgens) will take them…
Ok, so you’ve seen it all before. However, as a father, sitting watching this with my five-year-old son, I was reminded of my childhood and discovering all the Doug McClure movies and felt the excitement that I experienced back then through him.
Movies like this are sadly a dying breed and Peyton must be commended for keeping them alive… Journey 2 has everything you expect: Giant lizards? Check. Giant spiders? Yup. Tiny elephants? Yup. Peril at every turn, exotic locations and lost cities? Absolutely. What about references to keep the Jules Verne (Vernians ) fans happy? Absolutely.
But while it is an exercise in box checking, Journey 2 is done with such flourish and wit, thanks in no small part to the chemistry between Johnson and Hutcherson and the sense of fun that Caine brings to proceedings when he eventually turns up, that you have no choice but enjoy the adventure and by the time they reach the Nautilus, yes that one, you’re having a blast.
The direction is adequate with Peyton favouring the sweeping over-the-shoulder reveals, but the island often lends itself to it happily enough and there’s only so many times the camera can follow a creature until something in the foreground finally shows how small/giant they are before you start seeing them coming, but that said, he frames the action well and allows some nice comedy moments and uses the 3D to great effect. Showing that he, as other film-makers have, is learning that less is more with new/old technology.
I’m still not sure if I can forgive him for the pec-rapid-fire scene though. Don’t ask… if you see it, you’ll know.
All in all, I don’t think this is a movie I’d take a date to my nerdy friends, but if you have a couple of hours that need killed, or want something that you know the kids will love and will keep you occupied then this will do… at least until The Phantom Menace or Muppets open in a few weeks.
In closing, it’s nothing new, but it’s a fun throwback to the movies of my childhood and I love that my son loved it… that’s what it aims to do and it does it admirably. Now, when is the moon-bound part three coming?

Fast 5, vroom vroom baby meep meep!

Fast 5, directed by Justin Lin, stars Furious veterans Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang and adds Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to the roster. This latest installment proves the Fast and Furious franchise is still alive and kicking!

Storyline:
Former cop Brian O'Conner, now an outlaw himself, partners with ex-con Dom Toretto. Since Brian and Mia Toretto broke Dom out of custody, they've fled across continents to escape the long arm of the law. Backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, our heroes must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But a pissed off CEO is not the only one on their tail. Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs is on the case, and he's a man that never misses his target. When Hobbs is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can't separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey... before someone else runs them down first.

A very enjoyable movie for those who just want to sit back and watch super fast so-not-realistic-racing, cheesy dialog and things blowing the heck up. BOOM! I've been to a few Side Shows (illegal street races) in my day, and NEVER has there been one like in these films. lol It is a man's dream come true: hot chicks falling out of bikinis and fast muscle cars. Heaven! But ladies never fear, YOU too will enjoy all the man candy oozing from the screen with this one. Bust out those spoons and scoop these hunks up! ;)

The film is a thrill ride mixed in with some pretty awful acting, the only thing saving it is the decent script and over the top car chases. It's really amazing stuff to watch on the big screen. I love The Rock but good lordy with lines like:

Some random dude "Sir. Do you want the good news or the bad news first?"
The Rock "The good. You know I like to eat my dessert before dinner."

You may only roll your eyes a few times, but go in knowing it's all for fun. Relax, enjoy that popcorn and Coke and hold on! Make sure to park your rump in that seat, after the trailers roll there's a hidden scene. ;)
