Excerpt: Heartless: Interstellar Brides® Program: Primal Mates Book 1 by Grace Goodwin + giveaway

Heartless: A Sci-Fi Alien Romance Novel (Interstellar Brides® Program: Primal Mates Book 1)

by Grace Goodwin
June 27th 2023
Genres: Adult, Romance, Science Fiction
Warrior. Doctor. Spy. I am Commander Helion, a heartless terror, relentless and unforgiving. Merciless.

My destiny is not to claim a female, to have a family, to be rendered helpless by love.

Despite this, I am matched. A beautiful human female is now mine. Despite my warnings, she is determined to leave her mark on me, body and soul.

Honor demands I resist. I tell her the truth. I will not place a mating collar around her neck. I cannot protect her—especially from me—my choices—the horrors I face every day.

Just one moment of weakness and she gets under my skin, makes me want things I cannot have. She is everything I am not—and the most dangerous creature I have ever faced.

Claiming her—keeping her—is not possible with my pivotal role in this never-ending war. There is no place in my duties for desire. For need. Too many innocents count on me for protection. Too many lives are at stake, including hers.

The enemy is always ready and waiting, but I never expected her to be among them.

For the first time in my hardened life, I question my sanity. My dark soul. I begin to understand exactly what my enemies have stolen from me—and realize there is no limit to what a heartless warrior will sacrifice for love.

Excerpt:
Oh, heck yes. I was ready for lots of mind-blowing private time with two hot mates. Sooooo, ready. My body had been willing for a while. My mind had taken its sweet time catching up.

Now every part of me was fully on board. Heart. Mind. Body. Two mates? So very, very naughty. I squirmed, just a bit. I couldn’t keep the restless need from escaping. I hadn’t been touched by a man in so long. I tried to recall the last time—before the—before that. I couldn’t remember clearly, but I was pretty sure it had been years.

“The transport window is closing, my lady. If we wait much longer, I will need to delay your departure.” The Prillon warrior in control of the transport pad interrupted our long goodbye.

“Of course. So sorry.” I gave Makayla one final, super-tight hug, and walked up the few stairs to join my soon-to-be transported suitcase so we could be flung across the galaxy.

The officer nodded, his large hands moving competently over the controls.

Would my mates touch me with that level of intense concentration?

Were their hands that big? That skilled?

What was wrong with me? I was thinking like a horny teenager.

“Are you ready, my lady?” The transport officer had kind eyes. He knew where I was going. And why. I nodded. The hum of the transport pad rose up from the floor like an electricity bath. The extra energy building up for my jump through space made me squirm like a shelter puppy about to be released from its cage. Finally free.

Oh, yes. I was ready to meet my new mate.

Commander Zarren Helion.

Even his name sounded formidable.

I just knew he was going to be one hundred percent perfect.

***

Commander Zarren Helion, Intelligence Core, Black Fleet, Sector 438

The Prillon warrior sitting before me bled from multiple wounds, none fatal, each strategically placed to inflict maximum pain. Lieutenant Oberan Arcas of Prillon Prime. I have to break him.

Dangerous. Tortured. Desperate. King Ryker of the Draquonir will make one last sacrifice to save his people and his kingdom before he loses control of the raging beast inside him. Dragon kind are dwindling, no longer able to hunt for their true mates in this contemporary, high-tech world.

Ryker must do something no dragon has ever done before; have a child with a human woman he has no desire to touch, a woman his dragon refuses to take as a mate. Arrangements have been made. A queen chosen. A loveless, chaste marriage of convenience. No passion. No dragonfire. Nothing but contracts and medical procedures to sire an heir. This is the only way his race will survive.

Katy Toure is tired of cleaning up her identical twin’s messes, but when her sister calls in a panic, unable to get to an important business meeting worth millions of dollars, Katy just can’t say no. All Katy has to do is walk out of her dead-end job, grab her sister’s passport, fly to Italy, pretend to be her sister for a few days, sign some contracts and take the vacation she’s always dreamed about.

No one will know she’s an imposter. No one ever knows.

But Katy has never tried to fool a dragon who scents his mate.

Holy sh$t.

Excerpt
I’d been following Jamie Miller’s progress for weeks. Months. Ever since I received word from training academy officials that I’d been chosen by an Earth recruit in the new Elite Starfighter otherworlds virtual battle program. Then I became obsessed.

Based on her stunned expression, I was not the only one suffering the shock of being chosen, of realizing our bonding was finally real. Standing before her was much more intense than interacting with her in the training program. She had been nothing but a possibility, a digital fantasy. Now I could see her, feel her. Touch her.

My first glimpse… she was everything I’d imagined. And even more perfect.

“Excuse me? I’m what?” She lifted her hand and rubbed both of her eyes. Blinked. Looked at me again. “You’re still here. Why are you still here?”

“I am not leaving. I must speak with you, Jamie.”

She stared, her gaze disoriented and confused. I fought back a smile. She was more beautiful in person. She looked… flummoxed. The feeling was mutual.

The new training simulations had been distributed to Earth and multiple other worlds months ago, with no results. Until now. The few surviving Starfighters on Velerion had been fighting and struggling to defend my home world. And they were faltering. Dying. Being picked off one by one as exhaustion or the relentless attacks of Queen Raya’s Scythe fighters wore them down. The truth was, we were losing the war.

We needed new Elite Starfighters. Without them, our entire civilization, our planet would fall to the evil queen’s invaders and her Dark Fleet allies. But the Dark Fleet would not stop at Velerion. There were other worlds ripe for the taking. Many with far fewer defenses. Including Earth.

“This can’t be real.” Reaching up with both hands, she brushed the hair out of her face and tucked the long strands back behind her ears. After all the time I’d watched her in the simulations, I was finally seeing the real female. She looked sleep rumpled and sexy. I wanted to bend down, grab her, and haul her to me, crush her mouth with my lips. Make her body mine. But I dared not. I was on very treacherous ground. The law was clear. Even though she’d completed the training, she had to come with me of her own free will. I was not without honor. No matter how badly my people needed her help, I would not force her to return with me to Velerion to save the planet.

“I am real.” She was an Elite Starfighter now. She would choose to help. We needed Jamie Miller. We needed a thousand more just like her. Male. Female. Androgynous. Human. Centaurian. Andromedan. I didn’t care where they came from as long as they had the skills to protect Velerion.

The fact that Jamie had chosen me in the program was a gift. I’d gotten hard the first time I’d received word of our match, when I’d seen her avatar appear on my data screen. Her curves. Her dark hair. Seeing her stand before me now was a shock to my system. I’d heard her voice in the training simulations. Seen her smile. Heard her sass. Ached to touch her. In fact, I had thought of her, been consumed with my need for her from the first moment the training simulation had connected us. I had to hope she felt the same in return, but the way she was acting, I couldn’t be sure.

The reality of her was a shock to my system, lust and physical need both urges I was not prepared to feel pulsing through every cell as she stood before me. So close I could smell her soft skin, see the sleek shine of her hair. My fingers twitched at my sides as I fought to remain calm. She was mine now. She’d finished training and taken her vow to be mine. She had accepted me. We were a bonded pair. My body belonged to her as hers belonged to me.

Yet she stared at me as if I was a stranger. As if we had not spent hundreds of hours together in training simulators. True, we’d been on different worlds, but I knew her voice. Knew the way she moved. Knew her.

Surely she was familiar with me as well? “Are you going to invite me in?”

“No. Not that it matters since you’re already inside my head.” She reached up to touch my cheek but stopped before making contact. I nearly groaned in disappointment.

I grabbed her hand and pressed her palm to my cheek. “I am real, Jamie. I have come a very long way. Please, Jamie, may I come inside and speak with you?”

“So polite. Sure, dream man. Come on in.”

I took a step closer, careful of the thick cords across the floor while remaining behind the cameras. Wulf’s hands gripped the arms of his chair as if they were keeping him from flying away. Maybe because I looked at people’s faces all the time, I could often tell what they were feeling, or maybe Wulf was equally bad at hiding his emotions.

I’d lusted after him. Drooled over him. Dreamed of him. I hadn’t really thought of the toll this show was taking on him. Had he truly volunteered for this? He looked about as enthused to be sitting here as someone in the waiting room before a colonoscopy. Was what Chet had said true? Would he die if he didn’t pick Genevieve or Willow? Was he really going to be executed?

Was his life so bad that he’d choose execution over the women? Not once in the three weeks of taping had Chet asked him what he was looking for in a mate. Everyone assumed, including me, that Wulf was whittling down the ladies to his favorites, to the one he’d give his cuffs.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

The show dragged on, as they had a one-hour time slot, with plenty of commercial breaks to heighten the anticipation. I was ready to scream by the time Chet stopped his inane questions and finally got down to the business at hand. The choice. Wulf’s choice.

“It’s finally time. Genevieve, Willow…” Chet spoke and the ladies took a step closer. The lights dimmed except for a focused beam on the gleaming cuffs in the glass case.

I moved around another camera to be as close as I could but remain behind the scenes. We were all in shadows, the large set being lit only by the stage.

“Warlord Wulf. It is time.”

Wulf slowly rose to his feet.

“Who is going to be your bride? Genevieve or Willow?”

Mary, a wardrobe tech, moved to stand beside me but bumped my shoulder, pushing me forward. I gasped and stopped my forward momentum out of sheer panic. I didn’t get in the way, but my heart was in my throat. Mary’s hand settled on my shoulder, and she mouthed a sorry along with a small smile.

I looked back at the stage, at what I’d been waiting for since the first episode. But Wulf wasn’t looking at the final contestants. He was looking at me.

Me.

Oh. My. God.

Had I gotten in front of the camera? Had I distracted Wulf at a time like this? Oh shit, I was going to be fired. I took a small step back, but Mary stopped me.

Genevieve turned to look my way. Willow narrowed her eyes in my direction as if trying to peer into the shadows. Chet even broke his perfect facade to glance past the cameras.

At me. Although I wasn’t sure if they could actually see me, or if they were trying to determine what held Wulf’s attention.

A rumbling came from the stage. Chet, Genevieve and Willow whipped their gazes back toward Wulf. Then came a growl that practically made the floor shake. I felt it deep inside me and I gasped.

Wulf’s eyes were still on me, and I couldn’t look away. Not when he was growing. Actually growing. The audience gasped, murmured. Backstage whispering kicked in. Chet stepped back. Genevieve took hold of Willow’s hand, and their eyes widened.

The tuxedo jacket ripped at the seams on Wulf’s body. He wasn’t seven feet of alien any longer. He had to be eight feet and all beast. Angled features, ragged breathing, taut muscles. A gaze laser-sharp. Intense, as if he was ready to pounce.

“Mine.” The one word was low and deep, and it silenced the entire set.
