Hellbound in Vegas: A Grim Reality Series Spinoff (Hell to Pay Book 1)

Once I was an angel, which I loved. Now I’m a demon, which I hate. And might I add that my fall was totally not my fault despite what those heavenly douchebags believe. Anyway, I’m stuck with this gig, working for one of the head demons of Hell. And to be frank, I’m rather good at tempting souls and avoiding the boss man. That is until Camuel, my former angelic partner, arrives on the scene. All I want is to tempt my mark to the dark side, and then enjoy a nice glass of wine and a good book. Unfortunately, tall, blond, and feathery has other things in mind.

After radio silence for a couple thousand years, BAM, there she is, my old partner Mara. I thought I was over the anger of her joining Lucifer’s entourage, but clearly, I’m not. And damned if she isn’t smack dab in the middle of trouble, messing with the soul I’ve been assigned to save. Things are about to get ugly, because there’s no way I’m letting my client be swayed by a minion of Hell. And no doubt I’ll do something stupid like try to save Mara’s soul. I just hope I can do it without losing my own.

Hellbound in Vegas is a spinoff of Brux’s series A Grim Reality, which if you haven’t read, is a funny series. Mara, a fallen angel starts working her next mark, Nelson, when low and behold who shows up, Cam, her former partner. Cam is an angel, who up until now has just supervised things in Vegas but now he has been given his first soul to save, Nelson. Cam and Mara haven’t seen in each other in thousands of years and there are definitely some things that need to be resolved.

Another good series by Brux, but not if you are expecting it to be like her Grim Reality series it’s not quite the same but still a good read nonetheless. I look forward to seeing where book 2 goes.

About the Author:
Boone is a bestselling author in both fantasy and series romance genres. She began writing in an attempt to ward off the slow decomposition of her mental state while taking care of her twin toddlers. It soon became clear that storytelling was her true calling.

Her books range from medieval fantasy, filled with demon's and hot heroes, to humorous paranormal and spicy contemporary romance. Though she loves writing romance, Boone much prefers stories where she gets to kill somebody or blow something up.

She lives in the beautiful and rugged state of Alaska with her husband, two kids, their dog Oreo, and her black cat Velma Underfoot. Not to mention the numerous wild creatures that lounge in her backyard.

Plot:
World War II veteran Peter Blackstone traded his soul so that his wife could live. That was 1945. Since then, Peter has lived an unnaturally long life as a hired killer, providing the life forces upon which Jerahmeel feeds to survive.

Doctor Allison La Croix has a big problem. She randomly sees people’s deaths. She has longed to be free of her twisted "gift" to live a normal life without fear of predicting yet another loved one's demise.

After a horrific accident, a severely injured Peter arrives in Allison’s ER. The vision Allison experiences when she touches him nearly kills her. He teaches her to block these devastating episodes as she finds a way to unlock his forgotten, passionate soul.

But Jerahmeel’s minion has orders to destroy Peter and anyone he loves. Will Peter’s and Allison’s shattered souls survive the devious plan? Or could their love save them both? Someone will have hell to pay.

If all debut novels could start out this way, that would be a dream come true! An interesting take on the world of paranormal, all wrapped up in laces of mystery and dark lords plotting. I was absolutely impressed and fascinated to see what would happen next!

Well written main characters that were colored with complete back stories, and some steamy romance to keep the fires going. While the secondary guys left a little to be desired, all in all the overall feel was enjoyable. I liked that our lady doc had a lot of soft and strong going on. She's sure of herself without being bitchy about it and loving enough that you could accept her history.

While the plot twist was a tad predictable, it was still fun taking the journey with these two. With only 212 pages, the author does an excellent job of pacing the tale without rushing or dragging along. Kudos to book flow! I'm looking forward to see how this author grows as a writer and her characters evolve with the storyline. There's a lot of potential here!

I was happy overall with this one and recommend it those that like paranormal with some devilish bite.
