by Amanda BouchetGrace Draven, Jeffe Kennedy, Jennifer Estep
November 13, 2018
370 pages
An anthology of fantasy novellas for all seasons from the hottest authors of fantasy romance and urban fantasy.

WINTER'S WEB BY JENNIFER ESTEP
An assassin at a renaissance faire. What could possibly go wrong? Everything, if you’re Gin Blanco. This Spider is trapped in someone else’s icy web—and it seems like they don’t want her to leave the faire alive . . .

A CURSE FOR SPRING BY AMANDA BOUCHET
A malevolent spell strangles the kingdom of Leathen in catastrophic drought. Prince Daric must break the curse before his people starve. A once-mighty goddess trapped in a human body might be the key—but saving his kingdom could mean losing all that he loves.

THE DRAGONS OF SUMMER BY JEFFE KENNEDY
As unofficial consort to the High Queen, former mercenary Harlan Konyngrr faces a challenge worse than looming war and fearsome dragons. His long-held secrets threaten what he loves most—and he must make a choice between vows to two women.

A WILDERNESS OF GLASS BY GRACE DRAVEN
The stretch of sea known as The Gray rules the lives of those in the village of Ancilar, including widow Brida Gazi. In the aftermath of an autumn storm, Brida discovers one of the sea's secrets cast onto the shore—a discovery that will change her world, mend her soul, and put her in the greatest danger she's ever faced.

A Winter's Web by Jennifer Estep

Chapter One
“I look ridiculous.”

I stared at my reflection in the mirror above the long counter that ran along the wall. Even though I had been peering at myself for the better part of a minute, I still couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

Normally, my wardrobe could best be described as functional. Black boots, dark jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt, a fleece jacket if the weather was cold. I never invested a lot of time or money in my clothes, since they had an annoying tendency to get ripped, torn, and covered with other people’s blood.

But today I had left functional behind for flamboyant.

A Wilderness of Glass by Grace Draven

Chapter One
The vestibule just outside the busy kitchens hummed with conversation and the thump of wet boots. One by one, the musicians shed their footwear for the clean shoes they’d carried with them during the slow wagon ride up the castle hill.

Brida Gazi laced her shoes with shaking fingers, still cold from the winds blowing off the Gray to scour the bluff on which Castle Banat perched. She blew on her hands to warm them before tucking them under her arms for additional heat.

“I can hardly tie my shoes,” she complained to the woman seated next to her. “I won’t be much good on the flute if I can’t move my fingers.”

A Curse of Spring by Amanda Bouchet
Prologue
Prince Daric touched his fingers to the giant column of mist and then jerked them back. He stared at his fingertips, but nothing had changed. His skin hadn’t reddened; the nails weren’t blackened.

Nothing, in fact, had happened.

With a nervous swallow scraping down his throat, he turned his head to check that no one had followed him from the royal encampment. The dying forest stared back with gnarled eyes, everything brittle, creaking, and ready to catch fire. Nothing disturbed the too-dry branches, but it was only a matter of time before someone noticed he’d snuck off and came looking for him.

The Dragons of Summer by Jeffe Kennedy
Chapter One
“Inspecting the defenses yet again?”

Ursula’s question startled me, as I’d been so deep in thought I’d missed her approach. From my vantage on the walls of Castle Ordnung, I’d been contemplating the lush, green, and apparently peaceful countryside. The early onset of summer seemed to please the locals. For farmers and merchants, the fair weather brought welcome warmth for crops and dry roads for trade.

For a warrior like me, dry roads meant enemy forces could reach the seat of the Thirteen Kingdoms all that much more easily—and fair weather only made it easier to pillage freely and set fire to the rest.

New Release: NICE GUYS BITE (Elemental Assassin #15.5) by Jennifer Estep + giveaway

NICE GUYS BITE (Elemental Assassin #15.5)
by Jennifer Estep
Dec 12, 2016

Format: e-novella
NICE GUYS BITE takes place after the events of UNRAVELED (#15). It is told from the point of view of Silvio Sanchez, Gin’s personal assistant.

Working for Gin Blanco (aka the Spider, the assassin who runs the Ashland underworld) doesn’t leave much time for romance, especially with Gin’s holiday party planning in full swing. But when he catches the eye of a charming gentleman, Silvio finds himself going out for coffee.

All’s fair in love and war, though. Just as Silvio is starting to enjoy himself, he realizes he’s being watched. His nice-guy date doesn’t sense the danger, and Silvio wants to keep it that way (and, well, keep the guy alive) so Silvio ends the date early—only to be abducted by some villainous giants.

Will Silvio survive the night and make it back to the Pork Pit in time for Gin’s holiday party? Only if he decks the hall with bodies …

Which is stronger: blood ties or a battle-tested friendship? That’s the question Gin Blanco asks when a friend’s long-lost relative strolls into town. The suspicious reunion is a surprise for everyone—and a big problem for Gin. Book fourteen in the New York Times bestselling urban fantasy series RT Book Reviews calls “unbeatable entertainment!”

It’s not easy being queen bee of an underworld abuzz with crooks and killers. Wielding my potent Ice and Stone elemental magic will only get me so far—my real secret is my tight-knit makeshift family, a motley crew of cops and criminals, dwarves and playboys. My foster brother Finnegan Lane is my right-hand man, but when his suddenly not-dead relative comes back into the picture, I’m the one on the outside looking in.

It’s funny how life works: one minute your best friend is rock-steady, and the next he’s doe-eyed and buying into this whole loving-relative routine to the point of ignoring you. I’d like to be happy for Finn, I really would. But all of my instincts are telling me that beneath the syrupy sweet demeanor and old-fashioned charm, this sudden interloper is planning something. The whole shtick leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. This person might have avoided the grave once, but I’ll put anyone who hurts Finn in the ground—for good.

Excerpt
Bria tilted her head to the side, making her golden hair gleam, and her blue gaze swept over my black toboggan, fleece jacket, jeans, and boots. Despite my dark attire, her sharp eyes easily spotted the dirt and blood crusting my clothes.

“Well,” she drawled, an amused note in her voice. “I see that the Spider has been busy tonight. Care to tell me where you were, what you were doing, and how many people you killed?”

“That depends on who’s asking—the cop or my baby sister?”

Bria grinned, a mischievous expression on her pretty face. “Well, this cop knows you’ve been up to something shady at Blue Ridge Cemetery.”

I blinked. “How do you know I was there?”

She started ticking off points on her fingers. “For one thing, it’s after midnight, and you’re wearing your usual assassin attire. You’re also covered with dirt and blood, which means that there was at least one body involved somewhere along the way. A cemetery seems like a perfect place for something like that to go down.” She paused. “And I might have tracked the GPS on your car when I showed up after my shift ended and you weren’t here.”

I frowned. “I don’t have GPS on my car.”

“Correction. You didn’t have GPS on your car . . . until Silvio placed a tracking device on it a couple of days ago.” Bria grinned again. “He wanted another way to keep tabs on you, now that you’ve started turning off your phone when you don’t want him to know where you are. Silvio is rather determined to save you from yourself, as he puts it. Watch out, Gin. Next thing you know, he’ll be sewing GPS trackers into your underwear.” [JE: In other sentences, we have characters quoting each other in italics. Change this to italics too to keep style consistent?]

“And I’m going to cheerfully throttle my overefficient assistant when he comes into work in the morning,” I growled. “After I take away his phone and tablet.”

She laughed. “Oh, taking away his electronics will be punishment enough. Silvio is rather attached to them.”

Spotlight & Exclusive Excerpt: Spider's Trap (Elemental Assassin #13) by Jennifer Estep + giveaway

Spider's Trap (Elemental Assassin #13)
by Jennifer Estep

Paperback, 400 pages
July 28th 2015
by Pocket Books
Format: Mass Market Paperback, eBook, Audiobook
The next thrilling book in Jennifer Estep’s New York Times andUSA Today bestselling Elemental Assassin series—“an extraordinary series… One of the most intriguing heroines in the genre” (Romantic Times Book Reviews).

Keep your friends close but your enemies within stabbing distance.

One important lesson I’ve learned in the assassination business is that to be the best you have to roll with the punches. Now that I’m queen of Ashland’s underworld—by default, not by choice—a lot more punches are being thrown my way. But I suppose that’s the price of victory for taking down some of the underworld’s top dogs. Good thing I have my Ice and Stone magic to help me survive my volatile new position. Just when I think things are finally settling down, someone tries to murder me during a hush-hush underworld meeting. But the real surprise is how strangely familiar my shadowy assailant seems to be.

My job is to maintain order among killers, crooks, and thieves, and soon I’m embroiled in a bloody game where the ability to keep secrets could be the greatest superpower of all. My enemies have all sharpened their knives and laid their traps, waiting for me to fall. But this Spider weaves her own webs of death.

Spider’s Trap excerpt #10

“You!” Dimitri bellowed, having finally recovered his breath. He shoved his toupee back where it belonged. “I’m going to kill you if it’s the last thing I do!”

With a loud roar, he charged at me. I dropped the chair legs that I had used against the guards and simply squatted down. Then, when he was right on top of me, I surged up and tossed him back and over the side of the railing.

“Ahhh …” Dimitri screamed on the way down.

Splash!

Footsteps pounded on the deck, and I spotted Luiz rushing at me. So I squatted down again quickly and then, when he was right on top of me, pulled the same move and sent him overboard as well.

Another loud scream, another satisfying splash!

I scanned the deck, but there were no more enemies to fight. So I looked at Lorelei Parker and Jack Corbin, who were in the same positions as before.

“You two don’t want to join in the fun?” I drawled, picking up the metal chair legs and twirling them around in my hands. “I was just getting warmed up.”
Lorelei let out a disgusted snort, while Corbin held up his hands and stepped back.

Book Review: Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade Book 1) by Jennifer Estep

Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade Book 1)
by Jennifer Estep

Paperback, 368 pages
Published April 28th 2015

by Kensington
There Be Monsters Here. . .

It's not as great as you'd think, living in a tourist town that's known as "the most magical place in America." Same boring high school, just twice as many monsters under the bridges and rival Families killing each other for power.

I try to keep out of it. I've got my mom's bloodiron sword and my slightly illegal home in the basement of the municipal library. And a couple of Talents I try to keep quiet, including very light fingers and a way with a lock pick.

But then some nasty characters bring their Family feud into my friend's pawn shop, and I have to make a call--get involved, or watch a cute guy die because I didn't. I guess I made the wrong choice, because now I'm stuck putting everything on the line for Devon Sinclair. My mom was murdered because of the Families, and it looks like I'm going to end up just like her. . .

I’ve been on my own for four years ever since my mom was brutally murdered by one of the families! I am the best thief you’ve ever seen rube or magick. No one can touch me. Then it happened. I was just minding my own business waiting for Mo to pay me when they walked into the store and my life was changed forever.

Estep has created a unique story line with a twist of medieval in it and relatable characters. Good read from start to finish and a promise of more to come. A new author for me that I will add to my must read list. A little love, a lot of mystery and fun encompasses this story.

Book Review: (ARC) Midnight Frost (Mythos Academy #5) by Jennifer Estep

Midnight Frost (Mythos Academy #5)
by Jennifer Estep
Here we go again …

Just when it seems life at Mythos Academy can’t get any more dangerous, the Reapers of Chaos manage to prove me wrong. It was just a typical night at the Library of Antiquities — until a Reaper tried to poison me. The good news is I’m still alive and kicking. The bad news is the Reaper poisoned someone else instead.

As Nike’s Champion, everyone expects me to lead the charge against the Reapers, even though I’m still hurting over what happened with Spartan warrior Logan Quinn. I’ve got to get my hands on the antidote fast — otherwise, an innocent person will die. But the only known cure is hidden in some creepy ruins — and the Reapers are sure to be waiting for me there

Gwen Frost is not your average 17 year old. For starters, she has the gift of psychometry, basically she can find out an object's history just by touching it. She's also a student at Mythos Academy, a school for descendants of ancient warriors like Spartans and Valkyries. And if that's not enough to stress over, the Greek goddess of victory Nike, has chosen Gwen to be her champion in the mortal realm. Basically, Gwen carries out Nike's wishes and what she currently wishes is for Gwen to find powerful mythological artifacts and keep them safe from Reapers, the servants of Loki (If you're picturing Tom Hiddleston, don't this Loki is so not him).

I'm still a newcomer to this YA series and as always, I was afraid of getting lost or just not liking it at all despite the warm fuzzies I got from Spartan Frost. Turns out I didn't need to worry, author Jennifer Estep has a way of writing a series that can still pick up new fans with book 5 without making them feel like they've jumped headlong into a dense forest. There's enough rehashing of previous books to get newbies caught up without boring the longtime fans. I loved that. She's also great at projecting her characters' emotions onto readers. All the characters are on edge waiting for Loki's next move and I felt the tension, stress and anxiety they all felt.

What was particularly refreshing about Midnight Frost is that Estep doesn't use Logan to make the series, or worse, Gwen, seem interesting. Gwen is her own character and isn't defined by Logan's presence or lack of in her life. Gwen has more important issues at hand than whether or not she has a boyfriend. There's a bigger battle she has to prepare for, she must make sure that she's able to defend herself against Loki and his Reapers. At times Gwen's self pity parties can get a little annoying but then again, I had to remember that she is a teenager, not an adult and as teenagers we are prone to pity parties.

Midnight Frost is a fun read whether you're a teen or an adult, it provides a different, more interesting setting than your average high school romance and has unique, likable characters including a sarcastic, talking sword, an adorable wolf pup and a cast of stubborn teenagers all trying to survive the upcoming battle with a god hell bent on destruction.

Book Review: Spartan Frost (Mythos Academy #4.5) by Jennifer Estep

Spartan Frost (Mythos Academy #4.5)
by Jennifer Estep

I'm Logan Quinn, the deadliest Spartan warrior at Mythos Academy. At least I was--until the day I almost killed Gwen Frost.

Professor Metis and Nickamedes say that I'm fine, that Loki and the Reapers don't have a hold on me anymore, but I can't risk it. I can't risk hurting Gwen again. So I'm leaving Mythos and going somewhere far, far away.

I know Gwen wonders what's happening to me, whether I'm safe. I can't tell her, but this is my story.

There's always that fear of being lost when you jump into the middle of a series and I have to admit I was pretty lost at the beginning of Spartan Frost. Not only did I NOT know who the characters were or what they could do, I didn't even know what had happened in the previous book that lead to Logan turning on Gwen. However, that didn't last long and I soon got the gist of what had happened.

After being taken over by the soul of Loki and almost killing Gwen, Logan decides to put space between them. Feeling guilty for what he did, and fearing it could happen again, he leaves Mythos Academy for New York. Unfortunately, trouble isn't far behind.

I normally avoid YA Novels because I just can't relate to younger characters, but I'm glad I gave Spartan Frost a chance. Author Jennifer Estep writes one hell of a YA story! Spartan Frost is a novella, basically it's part of the Mythos Acadamy series but told from Logan Quinn's point of view. Estep can take a cocky, confident teen and transition him into a brooding, angry and doubtful young man with ease that furthers the overall story-line and in general, makes Logan a far more interesting character. After all, no one likes characters who stay the same through six books.

Spartan Frost gave me a small, but potent sample of Jennifer Estep's talent and I'm surprised, but happy to say I will be adding the Mythos Academy series to my TBR.
