Book trailer contest for THE MAGICIAN'S LAND by Lev Grossman + giveaway

This summer, Viking is thrilled to release THE MAGICIAN’S LAND, the spectacular conclusion to Lev Grossman’s New York Times bestselling Magicians trilogy (On-sale: August 5, 2014; 978-0-670-01567-2; $27.95).

The trilogy opened with The Magicians which Junot Díaz called, “Stirring, complex, adventurous…[a] superb coming of age fantasy.” NPR called the sequel The Magician King “a spellbinding stereograph, a literary adventure novel that is also about privilege, power and the limits of being human.” Legions of fans now await THE MAGICIAN’S LAND, a novel full of the subversive brilliance that has put Grossman at the forefront of modern fantasy, which will bring the Magicians trilogy to a shattering, triumphant conclusion.

Familiar faces return alongside new characters in THE MAGICIAN’S LAND. After being booted unceremoniously from Fillory, Quentin Coldwater returns to his alma mater, Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic, to stake out a new life as a teacher. But the past catches up to him, and before long, he and the brilliant student Plum must set out on a black market adventure, taking him to old haunts, like Antarctica, and to buried secrets and old friends he thought were lost forever. Quentin discovers a spell that could create a magical utopia, a new Fillory—but casting it would set in motion a chain of events that will bring Earth and Fillory crashing together. To save them, he must risk sacrificing everything.

THE MAGICIAN’S LAND is a tale of love and redemption—the story of a boy becoming a man, an apprentice becoming a master, and a broken land finally becoming whole. Old readers will devour the rich and riveting final book, and the completed arc will welcome newcomers who can binge-read the series in full. You can learn more about Lev Grossman on his website www.levgrossman.com and follow him on Twitter @leverus.

Sean Cummings Book Tour guest post + contest

Today we have Sean Cummings, Canadian author of urban fantasy and now...young adult! I had the privilege of snagging an early review copy and I think Sean has something special here. We have interviewed Sean before here and my review of Poltergeeks is here. I wanted to ask a few things about the writing of Poltergeeks.

isn't this a gorgeous cover?!
Sharon: Why did you decide to write a YA?
Sean: To see if Icould do it, mostly. I had a cool ideafor a book and there was just no way on earth that it could ever be an adultstory so I decided to write something for young adults. I’m pretty luckybecause POLTERGEEKS is my first young adult novel and it’s the book that foundme an agent and got a great publishing deal as well. I think most authors arewanting to grow as a writer and to explore the boundaries of their writing –that’s another reason why I wanted to take a stab at writing YA. I found thatthe first draft, however, sounded too middle grade so I rewrote it. Even thefinal product needed a lot of tweaking – my editor Amanda Rutter urged me toinclude swearing, for example. I’m forty five – I’d forgetting that I used tocurse up a storm when I was in my teens. Things like that helped Julie’s voicebecome more believable – more authentic.

Sharon: Why did you choose a female POV?
Sean: A couple of reasons – first, it wouldn’t have workedwithout a female protagonist. I really wanted to write a teen witch story and Ijust couldn’t see a boy in Julie’s place. The second reason is because I wantedJulie to have an uncomplicated romantic life with a dorky boy who adores her. That was in there from the very first draft – a wickedly smart nerd who lovesher with all his heart,

Sharon: Did you have to change your writing style to move toYA?
Sean: Yes and no. Iknow, that’s not really an answer, but yes because I had to write for what Ibelieved a young adult audience would want to read. That meant I had to make mycharacters sound younger. At the same time, there are a huge amount of adultfans of YA out there, so I had to strike a balance between writing for them becauseI didn’t want to disappoint. It’s acurious balance, that.

Sharon: There have been lots of great reviews forPoltergeeks from bloggers, have you gotten any feedback from actual YA readersyet?
Sean: Not yet. Idon’t know if that’s because there are fewer YA bloggers out there or not.

Sharon: Are you working on any other YA projects?
Sean: I’ve completedthe second in the series, STUDENT BODIES. Amanda Rutter, my editor at StrangeChemistry has it and I expect to begin revisions some time this fall. I’mplotting a third book right now – no title yet. I’ve also got a YA novel calledTHE NORTH which I have to start revisions on for my agent. That would be thefirst book in a trilogy – a post-apocalyptic series in the aftermath of azombie apocalypse. The book features a teen army reserve unit that goes hatchesdown and bust out of their zombie infested city only to find the zombies aren’tthe only enemy they have to deal with if they intend to survive.

Sharon: Anything else you would like to add?
Sean: I hope everyonefalls in love with POLTERGEEKS. It’s a wild ride of a book! Thanks for theinterview!!

Releases October 2, 2012
15-year-old Julie Richardson is about to learn that being the daughter of a witch isn't all it's cracked up to be. When she and her best friend, Marcus, witness an elderly lady jettisoned out the front door of her home, it's pretty obvious to Julie there's a supernatural connection.

In fact, there's a whisper of menace behind increasing levels of poltergeist activity all over town. After a large-scale paranormal assault on Julie's high school, her mother falls victim to the spell Endless Night. Now it's a race against time to find out who is responsible or Julie won't just lose her mother's soul, she'll lose her mother's life.

about the author:
Sean Cummings is a comic book geek, superhero junkie, zombie fan and a total nerd. (He’s also a gold mine of completely useless information about films made prior to 1960. Don’t get him started on “Arsenic and Old Lace” because he won’t shut up about it. ) He’s been writing since 1978 (as a means of liberating his “inner nerd”).

His interests include science fiction, the borg, cats with extra toes, east Indian cuisine and quality sci-fi movies/television. He’s a Barclay’s Premier League fan with a soft spot for Blackburn, Norwich City FC and Tottenham Hotspur. (Though the latter consistently break his heart more often than not.) When he’s not collecting comic books or attending the latest science fiction convention, he can be found in his home office, writing away like a man possessed.
Strange Chemistry is a global imprint dedicated to the best in modern young adult science fiction, fantasy and everything in between.

We launch in September 2012, with physical books across a wide variety of formats, e-books as standard, and with selected titles made available as audiobooks.

The Strange Chemistry editor is Amanda Rutter (interview with Amanda about SC) and agents with appropriate YA titles to propose can offer them through amanda.rutter@angryrobotbooks.com
Please note: We are not currently accepting proposals except through an agent.

Flock Talk with Tina Clare + contest

We are starting a new feature on the blog called _____ that's right it doesn't have a name yet. It is basically a reader recommendation guest post. Over in our Facebook group we talk about...sheep, coffee and bacon, but we also brag about out favorite books/series/authors. We thought it would be cool if we let our members take turns sharing their favorites because people are always looking for something new to read. So we opened up the dungeon and waited to see who crawled out!

Our first Flock member guest is Tina Clare. She has been a longtime member of the flock and mistress of our dungeon. Today she is sharing her 4 favorite books and why...

Stygians Honor by LoraLeigh

Window Rock, Arizona, is the last known location of Honor Roberts, who vanished when she was just thirteen. It was her only sanctuary from the Breed research that would surely have ended in her death—one such insidious experiment should, indeed, have killed her. That she lived is both a miracle—and a great mystery.

Stygian’s mission is to find Honor Roberts, no matter the cost. Now, with the help of Liza Johnson, assistant to the chief of the Navajo Nation, he is closer than ever to his goal. But will the discovery of Honor Roberts mean the destruction of the mating heat that has developed between Stygian and Liza?

BUY: amazon

Tina: As the next installment in the Breeds series, Lora Leigh more then delivers once again. Strong willed hybrids, good plot and an end that comes far too soon! I would say this was definitely one of the best of the breed books.

Courting Darkness –Yasmine Galenorth

We're the D'Artigo sisters: sexy, savvy ex-operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. But being half-human, half-Fae means our powers go haywire at all the wrong times. My sister Delilah is a Death Maiden and werecat who belongs to the Autumn Lord. My sister Menolly is a vampire who's dating a gorgeous werepuma, and the godfather of the undead-set. And me? I'm Camille, Priestess of the Moon Mother, married to a dragon, a youkai, and a Svartan. But my dragon father-in-law has decided that he doesn't like having me for a member of the family...
It's Winter Solstice, and Aeval welcomes me into her Court of Darkness. With Morio still dangerously weak from his injuries and Vanzir alive only thanks to my silence, the thought of training under Morgaine doesn't seem as daunting as it did. But then, Hyto returns to shatter my life. Captured and swept off to the Dragon Reaches, can I manage to stay alive long enough to escape, even as Smoky's father intends to break my spirit, then my body?

BUY: amazon

Tina: This one took me a bit to get into, but believe me its worth the wait. This isn’t a book for the more genteel minded folks out there, asthere are a couple of parts that will outrage and horrify some, but I give her kudos for braving that possible double edged sword and writing the book as well as she did.

Bear Meets Girl –Shelley Laurenston
He's big, burly, and way smarter than your average shapeshifting bear. He's also about to get trapped by own his game. . .

Lou Crushek is a reasonable, mellow, easygoing kind of guy. But once someone starts killing the scumbags he works so hard to bust, that really gets under his fur. Especially when that someone is a curvy she-tiger with a skill set that's turning Crush's lone-bear world upside down--and bringing his passion out of hibernation. . .

As a member of an elite feline protection unit, Marcella Malone has no problem body-dropping anyone who hunts her kind. But Crush is proving one major pain in her gorgeous tail. The only reason she's joined forces with him is to track down the wealthy human who's got her entire species in his ruthless sights. It sure isn't because Crush's stubborn and contrary attitude is rubbing Cella in all the right ways.

BUY: amazon

Tina: It was near impossible for me to pick ONE of Shelley Laurenston’s books to recommend. I’m a huge fan, to the point of near (butharmless) obsession lol. This is a ..ahem.. love story between, are you ready? A Tiger hybrid and a bearhybrid. What starts as her going out ofher way to make him as uncomfortable as possible by mauling him “lovingly” andtelling everyone and anyone who will listen that he is her new boyfriend and his abhorrent reaction to all the above, ends of course with her needing him topretend to be her boyfriend for her family’s sake or risk being married off toa distant cousin. If you’ve never read any of her stories before I have to INSIST you do, as they not only had me in tears from laughter from both the characters and the storyline, but comedic relief aside, they are all really great reads! (in my humble opinion).

What A Dragon ShouldKnow – G. A. Aiken
Only for those I love would I traipse into the merciless Northlands to risk life, limb, and my exquisite beauty. But do they appreciate it? Do they say, 'Gwenvael the Handsome, you are the best among us - the most loved of all dragons?' No! For centuries my family has refused to acknowledge my magnificence as well as my innate humility. Yet for them, and because I am so chivalrous, I will brave the worst this land has to offer. So here I stand, waiting to broker an alliance with the one the Northlanders call The Beast. A being so fearful, the greatest warriors will only whisper its name. Yet I, Gwenvael, will courageously face down this terrifying...woman? It turns out the Beast, a.k.a. Dagmar Reinholdt, is a woman - one with steel-gray eyes and a shocking disregard for my good looks. Beneath her plain robes and prim spectacles lies a sensual creature waiting to be unleashed. Who better than a dragon to thaw out that icy demeanor? And who better than a beast to finally tame a mighty dragon's heart?
BUY: amazon

Tina: Ok, for those in the know, yes, this is Shelley Laurenston’salter ego when shes writing about dragons! In this story you get to know theincredibly handsome and highly underrated (his own words and belief) “Gwenvael theHandsome”. He’s sent to bring about an alliance with a warrior known only as “the Beast”.. his reaction to finding outthis terrifying “monster” is one tiny female, in addition to HER reaction toHIM, will have you trapped in its clutches from beginning to end.

BIO:
A normally reclusive creature, I rarely leave the dungeon I've made into a comfy den for myself and a few select others strong enough tobrave me at my worst. While I would like to say that reading is my only vice, that would be a lie, but it is the leastvile of them. My normal genre is paranormal.. anything.. romance, ghost stories, anything paranormal. Turning pages used to be an issue, what with my claws (tiger hybrid but that is of course a different story) continuously ripping pages, but thanks to the handy new invention of EReaders, I can happily build up a library once again and am inthe process of doing so as we speak.

Thank you to Tina for sharing with us! Would you like to guest post and share your favorites with the Flock? Just send me an email.

Swagday Contest Winners - couch digging edition

This month I picked the winners with a method suggested by my 10  year old (Hey, Holly!). She suggested digging into the couch cushions.

So...I wrote everyone's name on a little piece of paper (I'm old fashion like that, I don't need no stink'in rafflecopter! And the fact that I have no idea how to put one on the blog has nothing to do with it!)
I dumped them all into the couch.

Then I had Holly start digging!

She pulled out 2 (and found $.76, I had to let her keep it)

First Place Winner

Second Place Winner

Miki

Congrats (both were thankful for their little furry babies <G>) and thanks to everyone who plays along. Come back on December 10th for the next Swagday. You can come back anytime actually...

Mojo Queen Virtual Book Tour + Giveaway

Mojo Queen by Sonya Clark

Roxanne Mathis isn't like everyone else. Not only can she see auras and spectral entities, she can mix herbs and roots for spells to do good or ill. She can even light a candle without the benefit of a match. But when she’s hired to exorcise a demon from a young girl, she discovers the limits of her powers.

With her vampire cousin at her side and a sexy sorcerer chasing her on the rebound, Roxie sets out to send that evil entity back to where she came from.

Nothing is as it seems and Roxie’s in over her head. It’s not going to be enough for her to just be a paranormal investigator and old school root worker – to defeat this demon, she’s going to have to be the Mojo Queen

Wow. I loved this book! The heroine, Roxie, is everything I look for in a female character. She is smart, compassionate and impulsive with a little vulnerability. And it wouldn’t be a true PNR without the sarcasm . Clark nailed this one beautifully. Roxie is a witty kind of sarcastic. I would love to hang with her and talk magic (and the fact that she keeps the company of a totally hot vampire and a mysterious and powerful sorcerer has nothing to do with it! More on them later ;) Roxie loves books and makes lots of Nerd references. I wanted to show some passages of just how witty she is, but I would be quoting most of the book!

I don’t know how much of the magic references in the book were researched and based on fact or how much was from her imagination, but Clark had me believing it all. Roxie was born with magical abilities, but had to hide it from her family because it wasn’t acceptable behavior in their religious home. She had some training in Voodoo magic and knows there is more to her powers, but she has been hesitant to explore them. She can see auras and ghosts and has been able to squeak out a living performing exorcisms with her partner Daniel.

Now we will talk about the men in the story . Daniel is a vampire and very distant relative of Roxie’s. Since her family won’t have anything to do with her (because of her lifestyle) he is all Roxie has. The cool thing is there is no romantic relationship between them (I know, how weird in a PNR!). I love Daniel. He is quirky, protective and smooth, but there is a hint of danger just below the surface. He has a story that needs to be told and I hope eventually Clark will give it to us.

Blake is a powerful sorcerer that has gotten in over his head when he brought over his demon lover. On the surface he is arrogant and self-serving. I loved the banter between him and Roxie as she berates him constantly for having a demon girlfriend from Hell. There is a lot of depth to his character and a vulnerability that makes him very real. This is something Clark has done well, create complex and emotionally believable characters.

Clark is a talented writer and the prose is flawless. If you like traditional magic, fast-paced action, and smart snarky dialogue then you will love this. I look forward to the next book in this series.

5 Mojo Sheep!

What State does the Author Live in?

1. Dani Harper is offering a signed copy of Changeling Dream book #2 in her shifter series. How ironic she would write such HOT romances in such a cold place ;) What State does Dani live in? It is also called "The Last Frontier" State.

2. Michele Hauf is offering a singed copy of Forever Vampire from her Beautiful World Series. I don't know how she manages to keep dry in a State with 10,000 lakes!!! What State does Michele live in? It is called "The North Star" State.

OH, boy, when Patricia writes her historical and romantic thrillers, do you think she eats those wonderful little chocolate covered peanut butter balls, what are they called again? ;) What State does Patricia live in? It is called "The Buckeye State".

4. Joss Ware are you from?( okay, it was funnier in my head). Joss is offering up a signed copy of Embrace The Night Eternal book #2 in her Envy series.
