Once upon a time, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Faith Hunter and award-winning authors David B. Coe and John G. Hartness agreed to mentor a group of rising authors—the Roaring Writers. Chasing the Light—with tales across the spectrum of science fiction and fantasy—is their celebration of success.

It is also a tribute honoring Melanie Otto (AKA Melanie Griffin), one of the founding authors, who died unexpectedly in 2016. Melanie critiqued many of these stories at the Roaring Writers' annual writing retreats, and the authors will never forget Melanie's sparkling eyes and delighted laugh as she found passages she loved in each. With this collection, including stories by Melanie, the Roaring Writers share her light with readers everywhere.

Thanks to the generosity of their mentors and contributors, all profits from the sales of this anthology will be donated to help Melanie's lifelong partner defray medical and legal costs.

Book Review; Heaven's Door (Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter Book 6) by John G. Hartness

Heaven's Door (Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter Book 6)
by John G. Hartness
October 18, 2016
118 pages
He's finally found something to care about after a century of searching, but will he lose it all at the hands of his most dangerous foe yet?

Seven years ago, Quincy Harker vanquished the demon Orobas and saved the city of Charlotte, NC from his evil plans. Or so he thought. Now the half-divine Nephilim are turning up dead in the Queen City, and it looks like Orobas is back to finish the job.

Can Harker stop Orobas, or will the bloodthirsty demon unleash Hell on Earth?

Who is behind these horrible murders, and why do they seem to be calling Harker out?

Will this be the battle that finally ends the long life of Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter?

Find out when Harker, his girlfriend Detective Rebecca Flynn, his guardian angel Glory, and his uncle, the legendary Count Dracula bring the battle of the diving and demonic right to HEAVEN’S DOOR.

He's the immortal magic-wielding child of Jonathan Harker and Mina Murray from the classic novel Dracula. But to him it's not a story, it's family history. Quincy Harker is what you'd get if Constantine were renewed by HBO and taken to the darkest of dark sides. When things go bump in the night, he bumps right back.

Heaven's Door is Book 6 of the best-selling Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter series. Book 1 of the series, Raising Hell, was awarded the 2016 Manly Wade Wellman Award by the NC Speculative Fiction Foundation.

My favorite a$$hole demon hunter is at it again. Book 5, Heaven Sent, was a lead in to the events of Heaven's Door. So spoilers for book 5, but not for this book.

The big bad demon Orobas has plans to finish what Quincy stopped him from seven years ago. The demons in hell got to be pretty tired of having the door to hell almost opened only to have it closed in their faces...just saying. Any way, Quincy is on Orobas' sh** list but instead of going after Quincy directly, he is hitting those he holds most dearest.

There are lots of bloody fights, traitors unveiled and then Mr. Hartness goes all Games of Thrones on some characters...damn, no mercy. There are going to be some very powerful and pissed off people looking for revenge in the next book. Can't wait to see them in action.

The only knock I can find about this series is the "romance" between Quincy and Flynn doesn't work for me. She is bad a$$ and should have stayed in the friend zone <G>.

More fun quotes from Quincy:

"I hate demons, but sometimes when you need to pound a nail, you have to have a hammer. And sometimes you need a really big, flesh-rendering, life-devouring hammer that besmirches your immortal soul just by being in the same room with it. But killing that particular d**kwhistle was totally worth it."

"Great, because stoned wizards make the best decisions."

"I reared back and chunked that folded umbrella like a javelin, channeling all my former Olympian ancestors with my mighty throw.

Okay, more like I used my vampire-infused blood to hurl it like Ahab chunking a harpoon, but I'll take that, too."

Book Review: Heaven Sent (Quincy Harker Demon Hunter Book 5) by John G. Hartness

Heaven Sent - a Quincy Harker Novella (Quincy Harker Demon Hunter Book 5)
by John G. Hartness

July 29th 2016 by Falstaff Books
Kindle Edition, 111 pages
BOOK 5 in the Award-Winning Dark Fantasy Series takes us back to where it all began.

It's the summer of 2009, and Harker has a brand-new guardian angel. Her name is Glory, and she's here to try to keep Harker from getting himself killed. Try is the operative word. Because not even a divine guardian with a Joss Whedon fetish can get Harker through this mystery unscathed.

Someone is murdering Nephilim, the rare offspring of human and angel, and using their blood for a terrible ritual. Harker, with some help from his Uncle Luke (you probably just call him Count Dracula), has to find out who the next victim is, who the murderer is, and what the plan is. All in three days. Because no matter what kind of help Heaven Sent, it might not be enough to prevent someone from raising a lot of Hell. Heaven Sent is a prequel novella, with far-reaching effects that will change Harker forever.

Heaven Sent is Book 5 of the best-selling Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter series. Book 1 of the series, Raising Hell, was awarded the 2016 Manly Wade Wellman Award by the NC Speculative Fiction Foundation.

This is such a fun series. If you love action-packed dark edged urban fantasy with mystery, humor and a lot of foul language then check this one out. Don't worry too much about what order you read them in. Each novella is a full start to finish mystery. There are a few series arc threads, but Hartness does a good job of cluing you in so you don't feel lost. And the stories can be read in one sitting. He is a regular wham-bam-thank-you-ma'ma writer that will leave you satisfied. Lots of bang for your buck...and that's probably enough cliches from me. And there is an unexpected twist at the end. If that doesn't sell you: he uses a Firefly and a Buffy reference.

This book is about a case that happened seven years ago when Quincy first meets his guardian angel, Glory. Glory is my kind of angel. I've always loved the dynamic between her and Quincy. The book ends seven years later, right after the fourth book, and there are signs that what happened seven years ago is getting ready to start again...

I also look forward scenes with Quincy and his Uncle Luke (psst...he's actually Dracula) I love Quincy's personality...if you dealt with monsters on the daily you might be a bit of an a**hole too <G>.

Quotes: had to censor a bit
"It was a dick move, and I knew it, but I didn't respond well to fright, especially when I wasn't allowed to kill the thing that frightened me. I didn't particularly want to kill my guardian angel because that seemed like a bad idea on so many levels." -Quincy

Exchange between Mort (demon) and Quincy-
Mort turned back to me. "Are all humans this f***ing stupid, or are you just a shining example? Look, f***wit, you're missing the point. The point is not that something killed Baxter; the point is that something killed Baxter. Killed. Made dead. Took the part-angel son of a bitch and made him not here anymore. That takes a lot of juice. And this ain't the first time it's happened, either."

Now I was really interested. "There are more?"

"More what?" Mort asked

"Goddammit, I can't tell which part of you is the bigger douche, the demon or the cat!" I exploded. "More dead Nephilim, you fuzzy pr***!"

"There's no need for name-calling," Mort said, suddenly all prim and proper licking one paw and washing behind his ears.

Book Review: Hell Freezes Over (A Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter Novella #4) by John G. Hartness

Hell Freezes Over - A Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter Novella (Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter #4)
by John G. Hartness

January 2nd 2016
125 pagesby Falstaff Media
He's no stranger to blood. His uncle is Count Dracula, the most famous vampire in history, after all. But what he finds in a quiet North Carolina family home rocks even the jaded Quincy Harker. Families are being slaughtered, butchered like animals, and it seems like the loving fathers are to blame.

But a ghostly visitor shows Harker that there is more to the story than he can see, even with his mystical Sight. So he goes chasing justice, and his quest takes him deeper and darker places than even his guardian angel can follow, and pits him against foes stronger than any he has ever faced before.

Will Harker solve the mystery before more men, women and children are brutally murdered? Can he fight the powers that are moving behind the scenes to keep the truth hidden? And will he be able to stop the murderer when he finds him? Or it?

This is the darkest Harker story yet, from the author of Hell on Heels, Raising Hell, and The Black Knight Chronicles.

Quincy says it best: "Oh well, when you're the demon-hunting part-vampire magic-wielding nephew of Dracula, there aren't really that many uneventful evenings at home in front of the TV." And this time Quincy must track down something so big and bad that no one in the supernatural world will even talk about it...not even his guardian angel, but children are being slaughtered and evil needs a good ass-whupping.

Each Quincy Harker book feels like a fast pace, hard hitting supernatural TV episode, except only on cable, cause there's a lot of violence and cussing. I've said this before, this series would be awesome as a graphic novel and now I'm adding TV show too. Just saying...

We are learning more about Quincy's guardian angel, Glory. Seems Quincy needed someone a bit tougher than a run of the mill guardian angel. Will be interesting to find out who she really is. And Detective Flynn's link to Quincy is giving him "feelings" he'd rather not deal with.

Hell Freezes Over is another riotous ride for those who love horror and humor and supernatural shenanigans.

Quincy-isms:
"Technically, yes. I mean, they still carry out the will of God and all that shit, but ever since the Great War, they've had free will, so when they're not doing what the big guy wants, they come up with ideas of their own. Most of those ideas are really stupid, like New Coke and Jar-Jar Binks, but every once in a while they decide to do something truly dangerous, like try surfing. That's where we get tsunamis. So I warded my place against the Host from both zip codes, north and south. If I can go through my life without speaking to another angel, I'll be thrilled."

"Perfringo!" The magic enveloped the handgun, and it blew up. That did a number of bad things to Danvar, including blowing his fingers off. one whizzed by my ear, splattering bloody mist all over the right side of my face. One blew backward and smacked Danvar in the forehead, and I think the rest were reduced to tiny pieces by the explosion.

Book Review: Hell on Heels - A Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter Novella by John G. Hartness

Hell on Heels - A Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter Novella
by John G. Hartness

116 pages
Falstaff Books July 29, 2015
You think your family has baggage? Quincy Harker has to not only deal with his uncle's psychotic vampire ex-minion Augustus Renfield, but there's a new Vampire Hunter in town, and her name is Van Helsing! It's not a good day for a foul-mouthed magic-using demon hunter, and it gets worse when the original Renfield kidnaps the current Renfield to lure Harker and his Uncle Luke (you can call him Dracula if you prefer) into an ambush.

"John Hartness' sense of humor, sarcasm and snark makes his tales unique."

"I've always been a fan of the Dracula mythology, and Hartness puts a unique spin on it."

This!

Now this is how you write a freaking monster-ass kicking story! Hell of Heels is the third novella in the Quincy Harker series. And my favorite so far! You know how you have to pay extra for the center meat of a watermelon because it is the best part. Well, this story is like that. Hartness took a novel's worth of story and carved out the best part of it. Not sure why the melon comparison, but I love watermelon so made sense at the time.

Action packed from start to finish. Every character is strong, snarky, fun and I love them all, even the big bad. Not to mention a clever take on the whole Dracula/Harker/Renfield/Van Helsing stories.

Quote from book. Everytime Quincy Harker speaks it contains many, many colorful words so if you want to read just highlight it <G>.

"When he wants to be, when he needs to be, he can drop all that 'Uncle Luke' bullshit in a hot second and turn into Count Motherfucking Dracula, Vlad the Goddam Impaler, Lord of the Undead and One Hundred Percent Baddest Son of a Bitch on the Planet. If you ever forget, ever, for even a second, that your employer can rip your heart out of your chest with his bare hands and drink the blood from it while it still beats hot in his palm, it may be the last mistake you make. [...] Because this ain't no movie BS. This is the real deal, and Dracula is gonna get biblical on a motherfucker."

Raising Hell - A Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter Novella (Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter #1) by John G. Hartness

Raising Hell - A Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter Novella (Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter #1)
by John G. Hartness
Kindle Edition, 91 pages
Published January 20th 2015

by Falstaff Books
Straight out of the pages of the legendary vampire novel Dracula comes a demon hunter for the modern world. Mina Murray and Jonathan Harker had a son. They named him Quincy. His guardian angel calls him Q. Dracula calls him nephew.

Demons call him The Reaper.

"There are things in this world that men and women aren’t meant to understand. We aren’t supposed to know these things exist, much less how to fight them. The things that go bump in the night, the monsters in the closet, the shadow out of the corner of your eye — that’s where I live."

This exciting new series from the author of The Black Knight Chronicles and the Bubba the Monster Hunter short stories is a walk through the dark side, where things go bump in the night, and somebody has to bump back. Quincy Harker is that somebody.

Also includes a bonus free chapter to Daughters of Shadow and Blood - Book I: Yasamin by J. Matthew Saunders!

I am a sucker for foul-mouthed, belligerent, all-out-of-f***s-to-give, but hearts of gold male protags in my urban fantasy. I’m not talking romantic leads. That’s a whole other something-something. If a guy is a monster hunter, like Quincy Harker in Raising Hell, then they need to be as scary, or scarier, than the big bads they hunt. I also don’t want a drawn out story. They go in, kick ass, and go home. The end. This is one reason I love comic books with this type of character (Cal MacDonald from Criminal Macabre and Constantine). Okay so now you know where I’m coming from...

Raising Hell is a novella that reads quickly and entertains. It would make a great comic book by the way. If you have issue with language you might want to skip this one. The F-word appears multiple times on each page and it should because…Harker says it best:

“I’m not a priest, and I’m sure as hell not normal. I’m Quincy mother***in’ Harker and the blood of Dracula himself runs through my veins.”

Speaking of Dracula, he goes by the name Luke Card, and is Harker’s uncle. He also has a man-servant named Renfield, his sixth one. He helps bail Harker out of jail while Detective Gail Flynn is constantly trying to put him in. She finally gets her eyes opened to what goes bump in the night and helps Harker take care of a nasty witch who is trying to bring demons into our plane.

This story moves quick, with lots of action and enough character development to make you curious but not giving much away. I am looking forward to the next Demon Hunter story.

Quincy Harker quotes:

“Whatever was on the other side of that door wasn’t human, was powerful as sh**, and was really hungry. It was also in a really good mood, which disturbed the f*** out of me.”

“My mom always told me I swear too much. I told her she was provincial and old-fashioned. She told me both statements were true. She was right. I swear too much. But almost always only at demons. Except when I swear at people. And angels. And minor elder Gods. And traffic lights. And a lot of elevators. F*** it, I swear too much.”

“Yeah, if you had a magical Geiger counter that thing would blow your eardrums the second we stepped off the elevator. Speaking of which, is there a plan? Because I can speak personally to the fact that just going in and punching him in the face isn’t very effective. And there are no SUVs out front to break our fall this time.”

I am the author of The Black Knight Chronicles, an urban fantasy series set in Charlotte, NC. I have self-published the first three books in the series, and am under agreement with Bell Bridge Books for books 4-6. The Black Knight Chronicles follows the adventures of a pair of nerdy private investigators with a slight problem – they’re vampires. In addition to their strange dietary requirements, Jimmy Black and Greg Knightwood have to deal with prejudice, relationship drama, trolls, dragons, werewolves, other vampires and a plethora of comic book nerds along their way to saving the world and (hopefully someday) getting the girl. The series has sold over 15,000 copies in the first year of publication, and I think you’ll really enjoy it.
