Book Review: Dark Summoner (Relic Keeper #1) by D.D. Miers

Dark Summoner (Relic Keeper #1)
by D.D. Miers

Paperback, 175 pages
May 6th 2015
"Looking at him made me desire things I never thought I would want."

Abby Davenport has spent the last ten years forgetting her past until a fateful night reveals her false reality. Thrust into a new world of dark sorcery and ancient magic, she's shocked to discover her destiny lies as the keeper of a powerful relic. Now everyone wants to control, own, or destroy her. No longer able to discern truth from lie, she’s torn between a charming guardian and a mysterious summoner. Abby finds herself strangely drawn to each man—one sworn to protect and one who calls to her soul. Can she survive the strange and dangerous labyrinth of the first realm, where every move, emotion, and reaction must be a calculated one?

My experience reading Dark Summoner, book one of the Relic Keepers series was mixed. The first half of the book is rife with the paranormal standards; twenty-something college student Abby Davenport has a terrible secret she’s determined to overcome. Estranged from her father, and plagued by self-doubt, she’s muddling her way through life with her best gal pal and café co-worker Regan. She frequents clubs with monikers such as “Club Deviant” and “Club Fervor”, where she sips vodka and cranberry. Oh, and she’s clumsy. She fumbles and falls down, especially in the presence of hot new stranger Dorian. I for one am so over the clumsy girl motif and I’m sure I’m not alone. I found it difficult to push past the unoriginality, and at times awkwardness, of the first half of the book. Sentences like “I spied Reagan out on the dance floor with Julia, the two of them shaking their booties as they danced to popular hip-hop song” had me cringing for sure. Then, alas, around the half way point, things became more interesting and far more fluid.

Enter Dark Summoner, Kieron. Kieron is charged with protecting Abby in The First Realm, the alternate world in grave danger wherein she has been secreted away. Kieron, too, is a type (tall, muscle-bound, dark and tan with a perma five-o’clock shadow, alpha all the way), but it just so happens I like this type … a lot. Against all odds, unlikely Abby is charged with saving the realm from certain demise as foretold in prophecy. Resistance, acceptance, and training ensue. Add a love triangle of sorts between Abby, Dorian, and Kieron and you’ve got the makings of an entertaining tale. So while there’s nothing abundantly original about this book, it’s a decent read overall.

Dark Summoner is a quick read and has appeal. The cover design is stunning and attractive. I plan to read books two and three, both due out this October. I’m optimistic the series has hit its stride and will continue to flow with an entertaining authenticity characteristic of the latter part of book one.

Taste Love Triangle
by Kate Evangelista

When I first started writing Taste, I never thought of the love story as a love triangle. It had always been the story of Phoenix discovering by accident that something else went on at her school after hours.

But to be clear, I love writing love stories, so in anything I write there is always a romantic element. This has always been the case since I was in high school.

I love the concept of falling in love.

In Taste, Phoenix stumbles upon Demitri. Well, he saves her from having her flesh tasted by Eli. Their relationship is a tumultuous one because they needed to reconcile one fact: are they just attracted to each other because of something that happens between them that binds them or is there something deeper beyond their connection? Was it just physical attraction?

I think this is why I like Luka for Phoenix better. He's a more stable choice for her. But, of course, I'm merely the typist of this story. Just because I like something doesn't mean it'll happen. *sigh*

The love triangle was born several drafts into the story. Slowly, I started seeing that beyond Demitri's and Phoenix's connection, Luka was making an impact in her life and her journey.

I believe Luka and Phoenix have a shared experience. They are both living through issues with their fathers. That's what binds them. They find comfort in each other because of it. The attraction between them comes from a deeper place than the physical.

Now, like I've written above, just because I like it, doesn't mean it's what happens.

I will be the first to admit that Phoenix isn't the type of make the best decisions in the world. She decides on things based on impulse and whatever situation her curiosity lands her in. And if you've read Taste, you'll know what I mean. If you haven't, grab your copy now and see what I mean.

Love triangles are complicated situations. A character is pulled in different directions for wholly different reasons. Real life is just as complicated. Sometimes even more so.

What happens between Demitri, Luka, and Phoenix within Taste grew out of several drafts, each one different from the next. There have been several scenarios as to who she ends up with in the end. My critique partners know this.

At the end of the day, regardless of who Phoenix picks, it's about the journey of how she got there. I may not a hundred percent agree, but it's her story, not mine. I merely want to share with all of you what happened to Phoenix when she met the Zhamvy that fateful afternoon she broke curfew.

So, I end this guest post by thanking you for hanging out with me. Grab your copy of Taste today. Love it or hate it is up to you. My fondest wish is that you enjoy the ride.

Be rebellious. Take a chance. See what Taste has to offer.

I dare you to break curfew.
