Book Review: Lethal Game (A GhostWalker Novel Book 16) by Christine Feehan

Lethal Game (A GhostWalker Novel Book 16)
by Christine Feehan
March 3, 2020
400 pages
Publisher: Berkley

The sparks of unexpected passion ignite in this electrifying GhostWalker novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.

When Malichai Fortunes attacks a problem, he does it full force—a habit that earns the GhostWalker a painful injury and a forced vacation in San Diego, California. With nothing but physical therapy on the horizon, Malichai is starting to get restless...until a striking blue-eyed blonde makes all his senses come alive.

Amaryllis is kind and warm and sees beyond Malichai’s rough exterior, but he can tell there’s something she’s hiding. Her innate healing abilities indicate she might be a GhostWalker—albeit an untrained one. Malichai doesn’t think their paths crossing is anything more than coincidence, but he can sense that one wrong word could send Amaryllis running.

When strange events at his temporary retreat put Malichai on high alert, he knows he won’t be able to deal with the threat and keep his woman safe in his weakened state. But calling in his brothers means telling Amaryllis what he really is, and revealing that he knows the truth about her too.…

Malichai and his team are GhostWalker's which are enhanced humans with special powers. They had been experimented on for a long time but now he and his teammates work for the military and go on hard missions. After a rather hard mission trying to save some soldiers and getting shot a few times, Malichai decides to go on vacation for a while and let his leg fully heal. He stays at a B&B and meets Amaryllis who works there. He's attracted to her right away but can tell there's something more to her that he can't quite put his finger on.

While on vacation at the B&B, two men come to Malichai and ask for his help not knowing who he is but because he's big and looks mean. He has to get some of his team involved when it looks like there's something shady going on with some of the people staying at the B&B. When people end up dead and others have near misses with death, they know that something is going on but they don't know what or why for a while. That storyline brings about a lot of action with Malichai and his team but when Malichai's leg starts to get worst instead of better, his team and family make an appearance to try and figure out what's going on all the while still trying to stop the bad guys from doing whatever they plan on doing.

The romance between Malichai and Amaryllis is so hot and sweet. She's had such a hard life and doesn't know if she can trust him or his teammates and always seems to be waiting for someone to say she's not good enough for him and is then surprised when it doesn't happen. She has reason to be scared and not to trust easily but that's what made Malichai such a great alpha hero because he made it easy for her to fall for him and trust him.

I've really been enjoying this series, the unique premise of the GhostWalker's, the action, romance, and danger has me hooked and ready to read each book that releases.

I give this book 5 out of 5 sheep!

About the Author:
I write every day and have done so since I was old enough to pick up a pen. (I spent a lot of time getting in trouble at school for writing instead of doing the things I was supposed to do.) Once I create my characters, I try very hard to have them react to situations as they really would. Sometimes I have preconceived ideas of what I would like them to do, but they don't mind me, because it would be out of character for them. They take on a life of their own. Sometimes when I throw difficult situations at them in the hopes I'll get a certain reaction and they don't do what I want, I complain bitterly to my husband and he laughs at me. Still, it is important to me to have them be real, not perfect people, so they make mistakes we lesser mortals might make.

McKAY
I wasn’t the one who broke her but I played my part.
She came to us when she was ten. I raised her. I loved her.
I taught her how to survive in a world of evil men.
But it wasn’t enough.

ADAM
I wasn’t the one who saved her but I did my best.
She needed me as much as I needed her.
Bought and paid for on the auction block.
But not for the reasons you think.
She was my weapon.

DONOVAN
I wasn’t the one who lied to her but I hid her truth.
She was broken before I got there.
Wild and angry. Defiant and bratty.
But she trusted me most.
She loved me best.
So I set her free.

Indie Anna Accorsi is a woman lost in her past.
A pretty little nightmare.
A gorgeous piece of misery.
A mess of lovely darkness.
She is creeping beautiful.
And now we want her back.

By the time that job was over I realized something.

I loved her.

I guess that’s what happens when you get used to something and then someone tries to take it away from you.

Because our trip home from Pensacola was two days later than planned and Indie Anna didn’t smile a single second of that ride.

She didn’t cry, either. But I could tell she wanted to.

And I did exactly what McKay told me to do if things went sideways. I did not yell. Not once. I just said, “It’s fine, Indie. It’s gonna be fine,” in the most soothing voice I could manage as I watched the Company doctor restrain her to the bed and fix her up.

And the game we played on the drive home was a new one called Let’s Pretend That Didn’t Happen.

Knowing what I do now, I probably wouldn’t have played that game with her.

I probably would’ve done a lot of things differently if I had known how good she’d get at pretending shit didn’t happen.

But hindsight can kiss my ass. You can’t change the past.

Indie Anna Accorsi is a beautiful little mess. She is a lovely little bundle of blonde hair and blue-eyed darkness. And even though I should have all kinds of regrets about how she came to be mine and how we came to be hers, I would absolutely do it all again.

Knowing her now, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Because if all those terrible things hadn’t happened, she would belong to him right now. She would be living in that little brick house with Nathan St. James.

She would be whole, and normal, and maybe even happier.

And my heart would be shattered into tiny shards. Millions of bitty pieces.

So yeah.

I’m a selfish piece of shit.

But I want what I want.

That’s the only way I can explain it.

Maybe she didn’t become mine the day of the auction, but the day that asshole triggered her without my permission, she did.

She is.

Book Review: Extreme Honor (True Heroes Book One) by Piper J. Drake + giveaway

By: Piper J. Drake
Series: True Heroes #1
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: January 26, 2016
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing- Forever
David Cruz is good at two things: war and training dogs. The ex-soldier’s toughest case is Atlas, a Belgian Malinois whose handler died in combat. Nobody at Hope’s Crossing kennel can break through the animal’s grief. That is, until dog whisperer Evelyn Jones walks into the facility . . . and into Atlas’s heart. David hates to admit that the curvy blonde’s mesmerizing effect isn’t limited to canines. But when Lyn’s work with Atlas puts her in danger, David will do anything to protect her.

Lyn realizes that David’s own battle scars make him uniquely qualified for his job as a trainer. Tough as nails yet gentle when it counts, he’s gotten closer to Atlas than anyone else—and he’s willing to put his hard-wired suspicion aside to let her do the same. But someone desperate enough to kill doesn’t want Lyn working with Atlas. Now only teamwork, trust, and courage can save two troubled hearts and the dog who loves them both.

It's no secret that I am, for sure, a cover whore. I admit it. Live it. LOVE it. That's just me. This cover sold me flat-out. It's got just about everything I love. Sexy man, check. Badass looking doggie, check. Handgun, check. The only things it's missing is some vampire fangs! But canine fangs will do just fine this time.

Extreme Honor is a very entertaining read, it's predictable at times but overall many romance elements I like to read about are touched on. A nicely written tone and overall feel for the characters and story are easily laid out for the reader. This is a very good thing for me, I love feeling a story and making a connection.

The added bonus of the pooch and his emotional trauma was touching and heartbreaking at times. Yet, another layer to add in the book as a whole. Our leading characters also have a well hashed out and believable back story to them, this helped keep me in the moment for many portions. Sadly a tad lacking in the romance department left me wishing for more from their sexual dynamic at times.

But overall there's really a lot to enjoy with this one, even if it is fang-free. If you like an entertaining and touching read then I absolutely recommend this for you!

Her heart rate had picked up, fluttering at the pulse point under his touch.

“Yeah?” The urge to slide has hands over more delicate areas grew and he couldn’t help running his thumb along the inside of her arm.

Awareness grew in her gaze and she bit her lip as she nodded.

He leaned toward her, focused on her plump lip caught under her teeth.

“What else do you like?”

She opened her mouth to answer but he didn’t plan to let her get a word out. Maybe later. He bent his head to capture her lips.

And seventy five pounds of fur jumped up on his side.

“The hell?”

Lyn gasped. “Atlas!”

“Af.” Mindful of the dog’s injury, Cruz gave Atlas a gentle shove.

The dog dropped back to all fours, his tongue lolling. Looking from him to Lyn and back again, Atlas lay back down on his belly.

Jealous. Damn dog was jealous.

Be real. Every dog recognizes a fake. And good men can see through it too.

“I’d really like to help.” Honest. Simple. All the other reasons paled in comparison to this.

“Whatever is going on, you know more about it than I do.” She licked her lips, her mouth gone dry.

His gaze dipped, focusing on her mouth. “I might. I know something. I’m not sure it’s related. But this next question is important.”

Can I kiss you?

Doubtful that was the question he was going to ask. But the moment was drawing out and she very much wanted for him to ask it. “Okay.”

“Do you think I would hurt you?”

“No!” It popped out before she had time to think about it. Anger burned up from her chest and spread outward. She scowled. “Of course n—”

He kissed her.
