Book Review: Silence Fallen (A Mercy Thompson Novel #10) by Patricia Briggs -spoiler-free

Silence Fallen (A Mercy Thompson Novel) Kindle Edition
by Patricia Briggs
March 7, 2017
379 pages
Ace
In the #1 New York Times bestselling Mercy Thompson novels, the coyote shapeshifter has found her voice in the werewolf pack. But when Mercy’s bond with the pack—and her mate—is broken, she’ll learn what it truly means to be alone...

Attacked and abducted in her home territory, Mercy finds herself in the clutches of the most powerful vampire in the world, taken as a weapon to use against alpha werewolf Adam and the ruler of the Tri-Cities vampires. In coyote form, Mercy escapes—only to find herself without money, without clothing, and alone in the heart of Europe...

Unable to contact Adam and the rest of the pack, Mercy has allies to find and enemies to fight, and she needs to figure out which is which. Ancient powers stir, and Mercy must be her agile best to avoid causing a war between vampires and werewolves, and between werewolves and werewolves. And in the heart of the ancient city of Prague, old ghosts rise...

Silence Fallen is another solid book from Briggs. I adore the world Briggs has created to play in. Each book brings something new. This time Mercy and some of the pack head to Europe...not for a vacation! We get details about the werewolves and vampires of those regions and how they are connected to Bran and the vampire, Marsilia. No fae action in this one, but plenty of ghosts. Mercy is forced to explore her powers involving ghosts. I also loved seeing more of the goblin Larry and his dry humor. He is a great ally for Adam's pack.

Silence Fallen was written a bit differently than past Mercy books. The POV switches between Mercy and Adam. I enjoyed getting the extra information as Mercy and Adam fight to get back to each other and taking down the bad guys on the way.

Fun quotes:
Mercy: "Running from vampires, again. Still. Go me!"

Mercy: "I'm a mechanic, I fix thing that are broken. I turn into a thirty-five pound coyote. I have powerful friends. But when it comes right down to it, my real power is chaos."

Larry the goblin: "Witches are bitches and they'll burn your britches sure a kittens have itches if you give'em half a chance."

Book Review: Fire Touched (A Mercy Thompson Novel #9 ) by Patricia Briggs

Fire Touched (Mercy Thompson #9)
by Patricia Briggs

March 8th 2016 by Ace
Hardcover, 352 pages
Mercy Thompson has been hailed as “a heroine who continues to grow and yet always remains true to herself.”* Now she’s back, and she’ll soon discover that when the fae stalk the human world, it’s the children who suffer...

Tensions between the fae and humans are coming to a head. And when coyote shapeshifter Mercy and her Alpha werewolf mate, Adam, are called upon to stop a rampaging troll, they find themselves with something that could be used to make the fae back down and forestall out-and-out war: a human child stolen long ago by the fae.

Defying the most powerful werewolf in the country, the humans, and the fae, Mercy, Adam, and their pack choose to protect the boy no matter what the cost. But who will protect them from a boy who is fire touched?

Most people have a go to comfort food. Book lovers also have comfort books/authors. These are books that no matter what, they will deliver exactly what we were looking for. I have a handful of authors that fall into this category and Briggs' Mercy Thompson series is near the top. I know I will get a well told and well written story about characters I know like old friends as well as opportunities to meet some new ones.

Fire Touched has Mercy and Adam thrown into Fae politics and their city set to become ground zero for a Fae vs human war. And it all seems to balance on the fate of a 10 year old boy, Aiden. I adored his character and hope he becomes a regular member of Adam's pack. They seem to pick up new members with each book. I love Brigg's take on the Fae and was glad to see more of their world brought into the series. We get to find out more about Underhill and why the Fae were cut off from her. And my Bea Fae, Beauclaire makes an appearance, along with Baba Yaga. One of the most consistent things about this series is Adam and Mercy's relationship. It is rock solid and he is one of the best examples of how an alpha male character should act. His protectiveness and loyalty to Mercy and his pack make him sexy as hell.

There has been a big change in how the pack operates now and it will have long lasting effects. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, and what new supernatural creature will show up this time.

Interview: Patricia Briggs (Dead Heat: Alpha and Omega #4) Book Tour

So excited! We have Patricia (Patty) Briggs visiting the flock today. I got to meet her a few years ago and she remembers me! I must have made an impression on her...wonder why? Oh, well...Patty talks about her Alpha and Omega series, the Fae, and how a sheep changed her life!

Sharon: Hello! We are so happy to have you visiting the flock. This is your first time here, but we’ve met before. 2012 in Charlotte, NC. Here is a pic of us together...good times people, good times.
Patty: Ahhhhhhhh. I remember you!
Katie: Don’t worry, we chained Sharon to the chair this time. No man handling the guests.
Sharon: I regret nothing!
Patty: Regret is for weaklings! I agree totally.

Sharon: For the poor little lambs that haven’t read the Alpha and Omega series would you tell us about it?

Patty: The Alpha and Omega series is set in our world, but the monsters are real. The werewolves have finally admitted their existence, but they haven’t told the humans everything. Charles and Anna Cornick are werewolves, and their job is to try to keep the peace between werewolves and humankind.
Sharon: I love the fae you’ve created for your world. It is one of the reasons I’m looking forward to this book, but what in the world are simulacrums? And do you think I can “privately” interview Alistair Beauclaire? He’s single right? *Rawr*
Patty: Yay! Someone else who loves the evil, scary fae! Simply, a simulacrum is something or someone that imitates or impersonates something else--like in Harry Potter when Harry and Ron drank the potion that made them look like Draco’s friends. In my world, the fae use a bit of hair (or personal item) to fashion a non-living entity that takes on the appearance and characteristics of the person the hair belonged to. I regret to inform you that Alistair is not speaking to me at the moment. As soon as he does, I’ll let him know about your request. He is single—I think. Hmm.
Sharon: That's okay, I'm a patient person *twitch,twitch*

Katie: With all these paranormal movies out there, do you think the world needs to see some Fae? And can Hollywood get them right?
Patty: Now you’re talking. That would be cool. Joss Whedon could get the fae just right. The big trouble is walking that line of “I am differently moral” without falling into trite evil villain number four. Joss Whedon could do it; he can do anything. My fae aren’t going to the big screen (or the little one) for a while anyway. Which is probably just as well since Joss doesn’t need to use other people’s stories—he’s a storyteller himself—and I’m not sure I’d trust anyone else with my fae.

Sharon: You can trust me with them! Well, at least with Alistair...
Katie: *hits Sharon on head with foam sword* Stop! She knows...*rolls eyes*
Sharon: But..*dodges moon pie*

public-domain image
Sharon: If you could have a dream flower garden what would you have in it?
Patty: Dream flowers, what else goes into a dream flower garden, silly? Iris are my favorite flower, with dahlias a close runner up. Lilacs were my favorite until I was eighteen and the lilac bush outside my window finally started to make me sneeze.
Sharon: You are lucky enough to visit us during the Year of the Sheep! How have sheep influenced your life?
Patty: Don’t talk to me about sheep. A sheep ruined my life! I was all set to become a supermodel/surgeon when a sheep called me over and explained to me that my looks were no better than average and surgeons are generally smarter than I was. She was so convincing that I dropped all my plans and became a writer. So the four people that I would have saved (by removing their brain tumors and then inspiring them to live with my model-perfect face) died. One of them was set to become an Internet tycoon who would have brought real high-speed Internet to my little town. Instead we struggle with less than awesome download speeds and no hope for better. That sheep ruined my life.

Sharon: What do you normally have for breakfast? Do you like cereal?
Patty: Diet Mountain Dew—I take my caffeine cold. I don’t mind cereal, I just don’t like eating until I’ve been up for a few hours. By then cereal seems . . . well, breakfasty and it is already time for lunch. I do like apple cinnamon oatmeal.

Katie: Did you grow up watching soap operas? I loved Days of Our Lives, was there a show that you just could not get enough of?
Patty: No soap operas . . . Hmm. When I was in kindergarten, my sister and I would hustle over to a neighbors house where they had cable and watch Dark Shadows whenever we could, does that count? I also had a surreal experience while sunbathing in the center courtyard of my college dorm (women only). The dorm was shaped like a doughnut and a lot of us sunbathed in the center open section because there were no men to ogle us while we were still winter white. I heard a gunshot and then screams and cries in full-surround stereo. It scared me for a moment before I realized what had happened. Apparently a major character on (I think) General Hospital was shot and most of the dorm was watching the same show.

Rapid Fire:

Sharon: Wildfire or Horse With No Name?
Patty: Horse with No Name. I have no patience for senseless tragedy.

Katie: Coke or Pepsi?
Patty: Diet Mountain Dew

Sharon: That's a win for Pepsi!

Sharon: Ride on the beach or ride in the snow?
Patty: On the beach!

Katie: Long man hair or short military cut?
Patty: Short.

Sharon: neck massage or back massage?
Patty: Neck.

Katie: Sword or crossbow?
Patty: Crossbow!

Sharon: Thor or Captain America?
Patty: Thor is cute, but Cappy is for me!

Katie: Slice your neck nice and slow or rip out your spine you dirty scum!!! (sorry, got carried away there.)
Patty: I’ll never tell <Grin>

Sharon: Dean or Sam?
Patty: Dean. There is no contest.
*Sharon high-fives Patty*

On The Road To Meet Patricia Briggs
with DeniseZ!

I am a huge fan of the author Patricia Briggs. I have been reading her Mercy Thompson series since the first book came out and have eagerly awaited each new installment every year since. I recently found out she was going to be at Powell's Books, which is about six hours from where I live, for a signing in celebration of her newest release, Night Broken. Well what's a fangirl to do but head on out for a road trip.

Some time ago Baart's cousin dropped by for a "visit." He has since taken up residence in my office and he very graciously agreed to accompany me on my adventure.
The morning of our journey showed great promise. The sun was shining, the tank was full, and all of the essentials were packed including my road trip companion, snacks for the road, and of course a really awesome audio book for the ride.

The first stop for any experienced road tripper is for libations with my drink of choice being a piping hot cup of coffee - a big hot Kicker to be exact, and it appeared that my companion was equally appreciative of my taste. Yep he also appreciated the lovely barista that prepared this yummy concoction and was very grateful for this tasty treat!

The actual drive, although long (ending up about seven hours), was pretty uneventful. We were able to wave at a few of the cousins on the way . . .

On arrival at Powell's Books, not having been to this type of event before, I spoke with the very kind employees at the information desk and was informed that the general process was to buy whatever books you had chosen and find a seat. The program would include a reading, question and answer period, and signing. Sharon and I had discussed which book to choose for this post and decided since the new release was just recently featured, why not introduce the series those of you who have not yet jumped on the Mercy Thompson bandwagon with book one in the series, Moon Called. I had called ahead to order the book and the only copy they had that was not a used book was one with the UK cover, so this is what I ordered. My companion and I scurried up to the checkout and paid for the book.
While waiting for the program to begin I found that book people are really a fun bunch, not only online where I usually socialize, but also in person and there is never a stranger in the bunch. We talked about all kinds of books we enjoyed; shared about books and authors some had not yet tried or read, and overall had loads of fun with book talk.

Once Patricia Briggs was introduced she decided to begin the program with a question and answer period. There were a lot of questions about her series The Hobb's Bargain, originally published in 2001, and whether we could expect more from this world: the answer, yes, eventually. She is currently working on the next installment in the Alpha and Omega series, currently is being titled Dead Heat and is expected to be published in the spring of 2015. The next Mercy Thompson book is titled Shifting Shadows: Stories from the World of Mercy Thompson is scheduled for release in September of 2014. She explained that this will be in the style of an anthology with half of the book previously published Mercy Thompson shorts and half of the book new content. She also stated the book is expected to be pretty substantial in size and it looks like it is going to be a real treat.

The issue of cover art for the Mercy Thompson series was raised and, as some may already know, the new Mercy physique came about with cover artist's model, who has been the same for the entire series, having a baby - well yep this does result in some changes. The publisher evidently likes the change and it is likely to stay. One thing I found particularly interesting was the discussion about Mercy's tattooing on the covers. It is different on all of the books and while I always noticed, I never quite understood this. The tattoos actually tell bits and pieces of the story in the book, which I thought was pretty cool.

Following the question and answer period she read a short passage from Night Broken and the signing commenced. We went up by rows and as you can see I am pretty far back so by the time it was my turn it was about 10:00 p.m. and roughly thirteen hours since heading out on this journey. Of course being the incredibly prepared individual I am I had rehearsed in my head all the way what I would say and just how witty I could be in the saying, full of confidence that I would just be so very professional. Well it was my turn and my brain shut down. All I could hear was the blah blah blah just like the adults in a snoopy cartoon, although eventually I was able to get out that I was excited to be there for myself and getting to share the experience on the blog I Smell Sheep and asked if my companion could take a picture with her to which she agreed. Then the oh-so professional me COULD NOT GET THE CAMERA UNLOCKED on my phone. Certain I am ten shades of purple by now, not to mention dead tired, she very graciously offered to have one of the teenagers in line unlock it for me - yes friends this is what really occurred. Well I hit the button and got the shot, much to the obvious annoyance of the lady seated in the background LOL who I did not see until later. Then my sheeply friends Patricia Briggs signed this awesome book. She not only signed it, she also drew a sheep next to her signature and said she wrote sheep next to it because she wanted to make sure we knew what she drew, frankly I think she did a darn fine job of it.
UK cover
US cover

Now we have this dandy signed book to GIVEAWAY to one lucky reader. Personally I think the cover is beautiful and once you have read the book you will understand the significance of it, but if you would also like a copy with the US cover art, which is also very intriguing and lovely, I have a used copy to include in the package. What you may be asking do you need to do to win this tasty treat? Well you might have noticed that Baart's cousin has only been referred to as my companion and frankly he needs a name.

Book Review ARC: Night Broken (Mercy Thompson #8) by Patricia Briggs + giveaway

Night Broken (Mercy Thompson #8)
By: Patricia Briggs
Hardcover, 352 pages
Expected publication: March 11th 2014 by Ace Hardcover

#1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson series has been hailed as “one of the best” (Fiction Vixen). Now, Mercy must deal with an unwanted guest—one that brings a threat unlike anything she’s ever known.

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from her new boyfriend. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s ex is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.

I am late to the Patricia Briggs fan club. I started with the Alpha and Omega series and picked up the Mercy Thompson series at book 7 Frost Burned (yes, I have a lot of catching up to do!). A reader can pick pick up any book in the series and slip right into the Mercy Thompson universe and feel right at home. One of the things I love about her books is the comfortable feel to her prose.

Night Broken brings an age old threat to Mercy’s home—the ex-wife. This was my first meeting with Christy and boy did Briggs make me sympathetic to Mercy’s situation. I wanted to rip the woman’s eyes out in the first few pages! But to be fair, Christy did have a serious problem stalking her, even if it was her own stupid fault. Yeah, I’m judging.

Kudos to Briggs for creating such a unique antagonist. He is brutal and broken, and you do feel sympathy for his situation, but he is a force that must be put down. You don’t throw a finger at Mercy and not expect repercussions.

I was so glad to see the Fae Lord Alistair Beauclaire from Fair Game (Alpha and Omega #3) make an appearance. He wants to reclaim the walking stick Mercy obtained in Frost Burned. The only problem is she must find Coyote and get it back from him. We learn more about Coyote and it turns out Mercy isn’t his only child. A new werewolf submissive, Zack, has showed up in town and I am hoping we will get more of his possibly heartbreaking story in the next book.

Once again a great read from start to finish from Briggs. You don’t have to start from the beginning of the series to appreciate Night Broken, but why rob yourself of all the thrills and chills (I’m talking about the kind you get from reading about alpha werewolves, hubba hubba) you get by starting with book one Moon Called.

Comic Review: Alpha and Omega: Cry Wolf: Volume Two (ARC)

Alpha and Omega: Cry Wolf: Volume Two (Alpha & Omega Graphic #2)
by Patricia Briggs
releases: May 7, 2013
A world of shapeshifting wolves comes vividly to life in this collection of four comics based on Cry Wolf, the first book in Patricia Briggs’s #1 New York Times bestselling Alpha and Omega series.

Charles and Anna are on the hunt for a rogue werewolf in the Montana mountains. The creature has morphed into something so dark that it kills everything in its path: deer, elk, grizzlies…humans.

But the wolf is the creature of something far more powerful. One of Charles and Anna’s own pack harbors a centuries-old secret that has come back to haunt him—and wreak vengeance on those around him.

Charles and Anna—unaware of the truth—are two innocents who stand in the way. But even as members of their pack rally around them, Anna’s rare power comes into its own—and is unleashed

I reviewed the Alpha and Omega: Cry Wolf: Volume One graphic novel a while back. I wasn't happy with the artwork and thought the story deserved something less cartoonish considering the dark edge to the story. I did find the story captivating and the cliff hanger ending had me wanting this next volume, which contains issues #5-#8 and is the conclusion to the story. The artwork is by the same artist and it isn’t as disappointing as the first volume, but still not to my taste. Since I addressed those issues in the previous review I am not going to discuss it again and not factor it into my review of this volume.

This issue tells Asil’s story in flashbacks and we learn why he is unstable and suicidal. The witch Mariposa has come to get revenge on Charles’s father Bran, and ends up finding Asil and causing him to relive his painful past. I haven’t read the book this graphic novel is based on so the story is new to me, and it is a quick page turner. Charles and Anna get caught in the crossfire and Anna embraces her omega powers to help save the day with Charles and Anna completeing the mating bond.

There is an excerpt at the end from Briggs's most recent Mercy Thompson release Frost Burned (reviewed here). The Cry Wolf graphic novels give a peek into the world Briggs has created in her novels and will definitely appeal to urban fantasy fans. The cover art of each individual issue is included and is absolutely beautiful.

Book Review: Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs

Frost Burned, Patricia Briggs, urban fantasy, werewovles
Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson, Book 7) by Patricia Briggs
Mercy Thompson’s life has undergone a seismic change. Becoming the mate of Adam Hauptman—the charismatic Alpha of the local werewolf pack—has made her a stepmother to his daughter Jesse, a relationship that brings moments of blissful normalcy to Mercy’s life. But on the edges of humanity, what passes for a minor mishap on an ordinary day can turn into so much more…

After an accident in bumper-to-bumper traffic, Mercy and Jesse can’t reach Adam—or anyone else in the pack for that matter. They’ve all been abducted.

Through their mating bond, all Mercy knows is that Adam is angry and in pain. With the werewolves fighting a political battle to gain acceptance from the public, Mercy fears Adam’s disappearance may be related—and that he and the pack are in serious danger. Outclassed and on her own, Mercy may be forced to seek assistance from any ally she can get, no matter how unlikely.

There is a reason certain authors and books are on the Best Seller’s list. I haven’t read the Mercy Thompson series by Briggs, and yet I was able to jump right into book #7, Frost Burned, and felt right at home with the story and characters. This book, and Briggs's writing, is fine tuned for the masses. The book's story arc, which was very exciting and action packed, was brought to a satisfactory conclusion and the series story arc wasn't confusing to me because the back-story recapping was perfect.

I hesitate to talk about the plot too much because I am sure there are spoilers galore if you want to start with book one. However, if I can connect with these characters so quickly at book seven I can image how invested the fans are who have been reading the series since the beginning. Briggs doesn't hesitate from doing bad things to her characters and I like that. Her supernatural world is full of beings who might look human on the outside, but they are definitely not on the inside and she never lets you forget that. If you love alpha males then you definitely want to check out this series. Someone dies and even though I know nothing of this character other than their name, I could feel the pain that this death caused the other characters. I am a urban fantasy fan through and through and the Mercy Thompson series rings all my bells. There is so much more to come for this series with the vampires, werewolves and fae…

Favorite quote:

“I was going to fight vampires, and my name wasn’t Buffy – I was so screwed.” –Mercy

** All members of the flock should jump on the Mercy bandwagon because she wears a Lamb necklace! I kid you not! Page 262-

“I patted the lamb necklace around my neck to make sure it was still there. Objects of faith worked against vampires, and for me the lamb worked as well as a cross. Adam had given me a gold-with-emerald-eyes replacement for my sliver lamb because wearing silver is problematical when you are the mate of a werewolf.”

Welcome to our flock Mercy…

Sheep ARC review: Cry Wolf (Alpha&Omega Graphic Volume #1)

Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega Graphic #1)
by Patricia Briggs (Creator), David Lawrence (Adapter), Jordan Gunderson (Illustrator)

The long-awaited collection-the first four issues of the graphic novel adaptation of the #1 "New York Times" bestselling author's novel "Cry Wolf"

"Cry Wolf" is Patricia Briggs' "New York Times" bestselling novel about the werewolves Charles Cornick and Anna Latham. Now, these characters come alive in full-color graphic novels.

Anne never knew werewolves existed, until the night she survived a violent attack...and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack she's learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males.

Then Charles Cornick-the son of the leader of the North American werewolves-came into her life. He insists that not only is Anne his mate, but she is also a rare and valued Omega wolf. And Anna may be the key to stopping a rogue werewolf that threatens the entire pack.

This is a re-issue of Ace's compilation of the Dynamite Entertainment Cry Wolf graphic series. It contains new artwork and a never-before published version of issue #1. It is NOT identical to the Ace edition though it does have the same ISBN.

I have read some of the Mercy Thompson graphic novels and loved everything about them so I was excited to see the Alpha and Omega series was also being adapted as a graphic novel. The only Briggs novel I have read is Fair Game (Alpha and Omega series Book #3) and I was blown away by Briggs's writing (my review). Cry Wolf: Volume One is a collection of the first four issues based on the first book in the A&O series, which I haven’t read.

Cry Wolf: Volume One is about Anna, who was changed unwillingly into a werewolf and then abused by the pack that changed her. She was rescued by Charles who is Bran’s (ruler of all werewolves in North America) son and chief enforcer and it turns out Anna is Charles’s mate. Their inner wolves recognize each other but they have yet to complete the bond as man and woman and Charles doesn’t want to force her after her traumatic experience with the pack that turned her. Anna is also a rare Omega wolf with powers she doesn’t understand but will prove fateful in later chapters. Charles and Anna are sent to investigate attacks in his pack’s territory of Montana. Volume one introduces us to Charles’s family and sprinkles in Anna’s and Charles’s individual backstories to catch the reader up.

The writing was a little vague and I was confused at first but things were eventually addressed later in the story. If you have already read the novels, though, this might not be an issue for you. By the end of the fourth chapter I was hooked on the storyline and there was plenty of suspense, and I was happy that a few pages from Volume Two were included as a teaser.

The whole point of a graphic novel is to have pictures do most of the story telling so it is a major part of the book. Unfortunately, the artwork didn’t deliver a great experience in this collection. The cover art for all four chapters is perfect and sketches provided as extra content were spot on, but something happened when it came to the coloring of the panels. The characters become too cartoonish looking and downright ugly in some panels. When compared to the Mercy Thompson graphic novels this was a disappointment, and I expected better.

Bran, Charles and Samuel

I would give the story adaptation 4 Sheep, but the art is of such importance in this media I can only give this 3 Sheep overall.
