Sheep Movie Review: Captain Marvel (2019) Spoiler-free

Captain Marvel (2019)
Mar 8, 2019
Directed By: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Written By: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet
Cast:
Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, Annette Bening
Runtime: 128 minutes
Studio: Marvel Studios
Rating: PG-13 (for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief suggestive language)
Genre: Action & Adventure, Science Fiction & Fantasy
The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Went to see Captain Marvel with my 17-year-old daughter. We both loved it. We went in with very little knowledge of Captain Marvel's origin story. I thought they did a Flerken-great job and Marvel continues to make humorous action-packed entertainment.

There are a lot of surprise tie-ins with the other movies. We now know how Fury lost his eye!

I thought Brie Larson was a great choice. And the only skin she bared were her feet. Annette Benning was stunning. Jude Law looked good as ever. The only disappointing character was Carol Danver's best friend, Maria. There should have been more chemistry between them. And I thought the soundtrack was weak compared to other Marvel movies.

The real star of the movie is Goose...you'll just have to wait and see what I mean by that ;)

This is one you want to see on the big screen, just like all the other Marvel movies. Stick around for the two after credit scenes. One is directly related to Endgame and the other is silly fun.

Sheep Movie Review: The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017)

The Hitman's Bodyguard
August 18, 2017 (USA)
R rated
1h 58min
Action, Comedy
Director: Patrick Hughes
Writer: Tom O'Connor
Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Elodie Yung, Richard E. Grant, Salma Hayek

The world's top bodyguard gets a new client, a hit man who must testify at the International Court of Justice. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial on time.

Went to see The Hitman's Bodyguard with my husband and 16 year-old daughter. We are all big action movie fans as well as fans of Reynolds and Jackson. The movie doesn't deserve all the bad press it has gotten. It is all a matter of perspective. Why are you seeing this movie?

If you are going looking for an Oscar worthy performance and script...well, you are going to be disappointed. But if you love to see extravegent car chases, lots of sh** blowing up, lots of bad guys getting dead, foul language, and some sillyness to go along, then you'll love The Hitman's Bodyguard.

The plot is predictable with every expected action film and enemy to friends troupes there are. Jackson and Reynolds are fun actors to watch...but the characters became them more than they became the characters...if that makes sense. Movies like these count on the chemistry between the stars and while Reynolds and Jackson were funny together I would place them at an 80% match. Now, Salma Hyek nailed her role. She wasn't in much of the movie but her scenes were hilarious. And she is so flocking beautiful!

Most people will be happy seeing this at rental prices but if you appreciate all the stunts and special effects and Jackson yelling mother****** (he does it very well), then try to catch this on the big screen at a matinee.

Family rating:
Don gave it 4.5 sheep
Holly gave it 4 shep
Sharon gave it 3.75 "mother*******" sheep (because Jackson's character spends the whole movie showing off his Deadshot like shooting skills—he never misses—except during the climatic chase-the-bad-guy-on-the-rooftop-while-he-tries-to-get-away-on-a-helicopter-but-then-it-blows-up-scene he can't seem to hit him *rolls eyes*)

Sheep Movie Review: RoboCop

RoboCop
Directed by: Jose Padilha
Staring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson
PG-13

Plot:
In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years - and it's meant billions for OmniCorp's bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit - is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance to build a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.

Let's face it, reboot films are hard to make. No scratch that, they are easy to make but hard to make better the second time around. Sometimes, you can't just throw a ton of money at film and watch it take off into this amazing cinematic form of being. You just can't. But RoboCop comes close to trying and for effort alone, I enjoyed this film.

Some amazing action visuals had me in awe and hanging on for the high-octane cycle ride. It helps that the new Robo suit was not only badass looking but loaded for bear. When the doctors take off all that metal armor ....just wow. Did not see that coming!

While the family aspect of this story felt rushed and under played, I did like the dynamic the writers tried to portray. But honestly how was the new RoboDad going to ever come home? He's hooked up to so many high tech gadgets that it was never going to happen.
But big business is the forefront of this film and making the perfect weapon makes me glad we aren't to this level yet.

Would I want my husband living as a robot for the rest of his life? I don't know, and I'm glad it's not a decision I have to make. Not in this lifetime anyway.

I would have loved more family building dialog to this film. More in-depth love and affection for the wife and kid, before we jump into the action bang-bang parts. This man is a dad and I assume a pretty rad one, but you don't get to see that and you certainly don't feel as invested when the awful happens. Same goes for the cop partner buddy relationship. Rushed on both fronts.

For the visually striking action sequences, I'd recommend this one. It's in your face and filled with unexpected comedic relief when the politics get nasty.

Sheep Movie Review: Turbo

Turbo
Directed by: David Soren
Voice acting by: Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pina, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Hader, Luis Guzman, Snoop Dogg and Ken Jeong

Plot:
A misfit snail with a need for speed strives to earn a slot in the Indy 500 in this adrenaline-charged adventure for the entire family. Turbo (voice of Ryan Reynolds) may live life at a snail's pace, but his dreams charge along at light speed. Whenever Turbo closes his eyes, he sees himself zooming past the checkered flag at the Indianapolis 500, and leaving all of his competitors in the dust. Unfortunately for Turbo, all of his fellow snails -- including his brother Chet (Paul Giamatti) -- seem to savor the slow life. Then, one day, it happens: Turbo is methodically making his way across a freeway overpass when he is suddenly sucked into the intake valve of a speeding muscle car. His molecular structure altered by the volatile nitrous oxide that fuels the car, Turbo gains the ability to travel at speeds up to 200 miles per hour.

DreamWorks is the same folks who've brought the world previous films like Kung Fu Panda, The Croods, Madagascar, MegaMind and my all-time favorite How to Train Your Dragon. So when it comes to animation, dialog, storyline and adventure, I've certainly set my expectation bar high. To date, it's consistently been met. Turbo, from beginning to end, had me entertained and enjoying the fast paced ride until the checker flag waved.

It's an underdog story that's sure to warm your heart and make the hefty box office ticket price feel worth it.

The theme they strive to bring home is no matter how big or small you are, if you set your mind to something it can be accomplished. I think this positive message is one that kids of all ages should learn to live by. You can absolutely give up and throw in the towel when obstacles appear, or you can climb for the stars and push yourself to achieve greatness. Little Turbo was an awesome teacher of this message!

Backed up by some fantastically kooky characters, shout-out to my boy White Shadow, had me laughing until it hurt and bopping my head to the beat of their whacky base drums. The film makers had a ton of fun putting this one together and it clearly shows. There was a consistent theme of understanding the comedy and never trying to force feed the audience to laugh, or cry, at certain queues.

Overall, I walked away completely entertained by this colorful tale of adventure!

Sheep Movie Review: Django Unchained

Django Unchained, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, stars Jamie Fox, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, and Don Johnson. If you like a good punch to the gut, repeatedly, and you know and love Tarantino films then this is one to see!

Plot:
Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago. Django and Schultz's search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of "Candyland," an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie's trusted house slave.

I don't think to date I've walked out of a film feeling sick to my stomach yet oddly fulfilled at the same time. It was such a mix of emotions rocketing thru my veins that I truly was left shell shocked, and might still be. The subject matter that is the film's heart, slavery, was one that I think everyone should know and see. This is a dark and ugly past, but a past nonetheless and if we're to learn from our past to prevent the same mistakes, then so be it. Message received loud and clear!

Django Unchained has a spaghetti western feel at times, with comedy thrown in to lighten the serious nature of events. Set two years before the Civil War we meet a plethora of southern money hungry characters. Leading the way is Don Johnson and Leo DiCaprio, both of whom you love to hate. Some outrageous scenes of what looked to be the start of the KKK makes for what would have been a dramatic scene of hooded men, but soon turns to being full of belly laughs. But aside from the comedy there's deep seeded darkness in a lot of these men. I can't think of one film where Leo has played such an awful slimy bad guy and really I have no desire to see it again. He not only pulls it off and sells the role with gusto, but the man makes it 100% believable. Cute dimples aside, he's creepy and gross and I'm not wanting to have any more Titanic dreams about him at the moment!

On the flip side, we have Christoph who's playing the good guy! It's like the cosmic acting tables are reversed with this movie and everyone who's usually a good guy actor is a bad guy. I loathed it and loved it all at the same time. My world was thrown upside down and shaken to bits while I was stuck inside! Gah! I will admit, however, it was not only refreshing to see him as a good dude but he plays it almost better than his evil side. His evil counterpart is pretty awesome though so that's saying something!

With plot complexity layered on top of blood, guts, and explosions the true winner here has to be Jamie Fox. What a role for this man to play and sell with every fiber of his being! This is a comedian turned serious actor and the subdued nature of his character was not only spot on but you could see, in his eyes, that this film meant something to him. And I just refuse to believe that the million dollar paycheck was all he was looking for, he slayed my heart with utter venerable passion.

I was emotionally blown away by it all, in equal measure. The film is over the top for sure but that's Tarantino style and it suits him well. If you've got a stomach made of steel and want to see a movie that will rattle your cage then get out there and see this film!
