Shortly after I reviewed the first comic in this series, the TP landed in my inbox, and I immediately sank back into the spooky story. What a pleasant surprise to learn the dark entity isn’t a “ghost” but rather some sort of ancient dark entity who takes on the role of muse for our artist. But he’s not simply there to assist her with creativity and inspiration. The mysterious, multi-eyed, toothy, and vaguely humanoid creature befriends our lonely heroine, and soon they embark on an intimate relationship. Yes, you read correctly: romance!

Love may be in the air in the darkened home, brightened only by candlelight, but this is a horror story, so be prepared for it all to go horribly, wonderfully wrong. As in the first issue, we’re treated to some standard, tasty, horror story beats along with some good, graphic visuals.

In short: a satisfying, fun read.

I like a good ghost story, and this first issue of “The Me You Love in the Dark” sets me up to look forward to precisely that from the entire series. The opening hook is a classic thriller set-up: struggling artist Ro Meadows rents a haunted house, of course. Poor Ro doesn’t really believe in ghosts, but hey, if it exists, maybe it will help with her creative block. Or, maybe not…

The story provides us with some standard (and fun!) beats we expect from the genre, and the art totally dishes up a spooky atmosphere. There’s also a clever use of silence and sound that ramps up the thrill of this haunting tale (no spoilers; you’ll see what I mean when you read it).

All in all, an enjoyable ghost story. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Ro becomes even more intimate with whoever, or whatever, is haunting the old house as she finds the spark of inspiration for her most personal paintings yet.

Issue #2 is about Ro and her new friend finally starting to talk. Her ghostly housemate is accommodating and follows her lead...it seems worried about scaring her off. But she does get inspired to paint. We finally get to see what it looks like. YIKES!

Issue #3 their dynamic begins to shift. The "ghost" inserts itself into Ro's life and they spend the next few months together. Ro's agent calls and there is talk of her leaving the house and going home. You get the feeling that might not go over well with her "friend." It makes a big romantic gesture and Ro decides to take their relationship to the next level! 

I'm looking forward to the direction this story will take. There are only two more issues. Will she stay? Will she try to get away? Will we find out what Ro's spectral friend is?

Attention paranormal romance readers! If you haven't read comics because they aren't your thing, you might want to rethink that!

The Me You Love in the Dark is a 5-issue story about a woman named Ro. She is an artist and dealing with art-block so she rents a gothic house in the mid-west. She was warned it was haunted but doesn't appear to believe ghosts. She spends her first weeks in the house trying to draw and talking to her pretend ghost and occasionally asking for help. Well, guess what?! It answers.

In issue #1 we meet Ro and get a little background on how she ended up in a haunted house. The issue ends with the ghost speaking for the first time, but we don't see it.

There are tons of novels about this very thing! Of course, I don't know in what direction this will go. Is it a good ghost or a bad ghost? The comic is rated Mature so that could mean killing or sexy time...or both! lol

I can't wait to find out. This is definitely worth checking out. I plan on reading the whole series. So I'll keep you updated.
