Book Review: Witches With the Enemy (Mist-Torn Witches Book 3) by Barb Hendee

Witches With the Enemy (The Mist-Torn Witches #3)
by Barb Hendee

Paperback, 336 pages
May 5th 2015 by Roc
The national bestselling author of The Mist-Torn Witchesreturns to a world of princes and power, magic and mystery, where two women have the ability to reveal the future and uncover the past…

When seers Céline and Amelie Fawe fled Shetâna under threat of death, they vowed never to return. Yet, less than a year later, they are summoned back—to aid the man who once tried to kill them.…

The cruel prince Damek is on the verge of closing marriage negotiations with the powerful family of a young noblewoman when his intended’s sister is murdered. To keep the engagement from falling through, Damek must expose the killer quickly—and he needs the seers’ powers to do so. Though the Fawes’ patron, Prince Anton, fears that bringing Céline and Amelie to Shetâna places them in grave danger, he is honor-bound to help his brother Damek.

Only none of them is prepared for the peril that awaits them at Castle Kimovesk—for someone in the court is determined to prevent the marriage from happening, no matter how deadly the cost.

Agatha Christie would be proud!

Barb Hendee delivers in this book! She takes us again with Celine and Amelie, sister "seers" in Prince Anton's court, on another murder mystery adventure. The author must be a lot like her main character Celine because she writes with a very insightful and empathetic pen. Her characters and events come to life before your eyes while guiding your mind to all the important information! Sigh....to have that storytelling ability!

We travel with the sister-seers (both future and past) and Prince Anton to his evil brother's castle to help solve a murder plot. Prince Damek has requested his brother's help to solve this mystery so he might get on with his wedding to an important Land Barron's daughter. He fears the unexpected deaths of two of the visiting royal family won't exactly put him in a very good light with the "in-laws and he so desperately wants to be looked upon favorably by his father. Of course only Anton and Celine now understand how "broken" and evil he is. (But does his bride-to-be understand? or care?....Hmmmm) There seem to be more than one "broken" mind in this story and all will be revealed in the end.

In the previous "Mist-Torn Witches" books we see the sisters travel with Prince Anton's Lieutenant Jaromir. In this edition, Prince Anton takes it upon himself to escort the "seers" and be their protection during this investigation. We are shown another side of the mild mannered benevolent Prince. He shows strength, strategy and vulnerability in this episode and I now see more reason to cast him as one of the main characters. He is portrayed as more of a leading man than a background character. Whoop-whoop! Perhaps we are getting closer to finding romance for Celine and Prince Anton.

We also see a little more of Amelie's personality and skill evolve as she becomes more of a partner to her sister with her ability to see "past" events. Her independent, impudent personality is endearing and frustrating at the same time but then.....she is young and just coming into her realization that there might be more to life than just wielding a dagger and a sword.

I see this series as more of a paranormal mystery than paranormal love story and that is perfectly fine. I even went back and read the prologue to see if I could glean a little insight into the killer and Yep....there was a little help with who that said killer may or may not be. Barb Hendee has a knack for spinning a tale of mystery with a little romance thrown in for good measure that the reader gets a little of everything. She leaves you wanting more....more....more!! I hope that the next book is soon to come as I am now totally invested in these characters.

I give this book 4 1/2 "snoopy" sheep!

Book Review: Witches in Red (The Mist-Torn Witches #2) by Barb Hendee

Witches in Red (The Mist-Torn Witches #2)
by Barb Hendee

Mass Market Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Roc (May 6, 2014)

Céline and Amelie Fawe can see into anyone’s past and future simply by touching them. They have used their powers to secure sanctuary—and a fine apothecary’s shop—in the village around Castle Sèone. But their continued safety has a price…
Far to the north, the men of an isolated silver mining community are turning into vicious “beasts” that slaughter anyone in sight. The mines belong to the noble family of Prince Anton—ruler of Castle Sèone and Céline and Amelie’s patron—and Anton’s tyrannical father has ordered his son to solve the mystery as a test of his leadership. He has no choice but to send the witches into the perilous north, to use their abilities to discover the cause of the transformations. Given how much they owe the prince, the sisters have no choice but to accept.

Together with the over-protective Lieutenant Jaromir, Célene and Amelie enter the dark world of a far off mining camp tainted by fear, mistrust, and enslavement—and haunted by men turning into massive, mad wolves without warning. Now, the two must draw upon strength and cunning they never thought they possessed not only to solve the mystery, but to survive. . .

Shifters and Silver!

The first book had me hooked on Celine and Analene with their bravery and ability to survive on their own. In addition, the romantic undertones between Celine and Prince Anton and Analie and Lieutenant Jaromir is building slowly across this series and you must keep reading hoping that their budding feelings will eventually be acknowledged.

The author's prologue gives us a glimpse of the frightening situation that will become the mystery Celine and her sister must help solve with the help of Lt. Jaromir and some of his men. Lives are lost and the situation gets worse before it is finally resolved. (Isn't that they way it always goes?!).

As "seers" of Prince Anton's court the sisters are finding themselves embroiled in a plot by Prince Anton's evil brother Prince Damek to sabotage a silver mine owned and operated by their father Prince Lieven. Someone or something is causing the soldiers to mutate into killer "wolves". Not the normal shifter wolves....viscous killing machines that are rampaging through the mining village and soldier's encampment. Needless to say, moral is low and everyone is on pins and needles waiting to see who will be next to suffer from this mysterious malady! Book me on the next flight out of there Scotty!

Will Celine, who can see the future, and Amelie, who can see the past, be able to seek out and identify the culprit before the entire camp is eradicated? Must Prince Anton tell his father that he was unable to put a stop to the mayhem? Will Prince Damek rush in and try to "save the day" to prove to his father that he is the wiser and stronger son? As we see the sisters as two sides of a coin (past and future), we see the brothers as two sides of a coin also...good and evil! As in every fairytale.....GO...good guys!

This adventure, although a great storyline, seemed a little longer to resolve and a lot more "seeing" visions described in detail. I think it might have been abbreviated a little to make the story keep the fast pace but with that being said, the author keeps your attention and has a very fluid writing style. Barb Hendee spins quite the tale. She is a master of character and event descriptions and draws you into her story!

I am hoping the next book brings another great adventure for the sisters and I am really looking forward to some romances to evolve for more flavor. Don't give up......I am sure this episode was just a little more foreplay to build the suspense in the adventures of Celine and Amelie....

Book Review: The Mist-Torn Witches (The Mist-Torn Witches #1) by Barb Hendee

The Mist-Torn Witches (The Mist-Torn Witches #1)
by Barb Hendee

Paperback, 326 pages
Published May 7th 2013 by Roc

National bestselling author Barb Hendee presents a dark, fascinating new series set in the world of the Noble Dead Saga... the story of two sisters who will discover they have far more power than they ever envisioned...

In a small village in the nation of Droevinka, orphaned sisters Céline and Amelie Fawe scrape out a living selling herbal medicines in their apothecary shop. Céline earns additional money by posing as a seer and pretending to read people’s futures.

But they exist in a land of great noble houses, all vying for power, and when the sisters refuse the orders of a warlord prince, they must flee and are forced to depend on the warlord prince’s brother, Anton, for a temporary haven.

A series of bizarre deaths of pretty young girls are plaguing the village surrounding Prince Anton’s castle. He offers Céline and Amelie permanent protection if they can use their "skills" to find the killer.

With little choice, the sisters enter a world unknown to them — of fine gowns and banquets and advances from powerful men. Their survival depends on catching a murderer who appears to walk through walls and vanish without a trace — and the danger around them seems to grow with each passing night.

"Spell casting Read!"

I have found another favorite author and series in Mist-Torn Witches. From the first page I was attracted to the two main characters of Celine and her sister Amelie, two orphaned sisters with an unmovable loyalty to each other in the hard world of kings, princes and fiefdom. Believing themselves to be ordinary young women without the special powers of their "seer" mother, they survive with their skills of wit, intelligence, and bravery.

Celine, the oldest, learned the art of herbal medicine at the hands of her mother and had watched as her mother gave future predictions to the local residents. Amelie was wise in the ways of combat and was merciless with her sword and dagger. Together they forged a life using their skills until at the age of 15 Celine decided to give a "reading" to a young man inquiring about his upcoming betrothal. Little did she know that the "fake" reading would a few years later have a huge impact on her and Amelie's life.

The sisters became cohersed to aid in a plot by the wicked Prince Damek to wed a rich lord's daughter and gain access to his fortune. When paid to give a "false" reading to the prospective bride, Celine experiences her first authentic "vision" and is unable to follow thru with the heinous plot that would end with the bride's death. (YEA Celine!) That puts them on the run and they are rescued by the evil prince's brother Prince Anton, a sympathetic, caring prince in his own right. They are taken to Prince Anton's castle where they begin their life as the Prince's "seers" and are offered a deal they just couldn't refuse. There they are center stage helping solve the mystery of many young ladies' deaths and the failing health of the benevolent prince. Amelie comes into her own "powers" during this time and the sisters are quite a team as they see both "past and present" visions to help solve the mystery.

I was enthralled with both the lives of the sisters and the mystery unfolding in the story. There was never a lull in which I felt I wanted to put the book down. This story flows easily and you can't help but want to turn the page to uncover what the author has in store for Celine and Amelie.

I will be on this "train" until the end station if the future books are as engaging as this one! Do yourself a favor and buy a ticket to join me on this journey!

Witches in Red (The Mist-Torn Witches #2)

Witches in Red begins not long after the ending of book one. Celine and Amelie are recuperating and adjusting to their new life in the apothecary shop located in the village around Castle Seone under the protection of their patron Prince Anton. Meanwhile in the north at a small mining community there is chaos with men turning into beasts and ravaging those around them and having to be killed. All work has stopped at the mines and income from the mines halted with the workers too fearful to enter the mines. Prince Anton is ordered by his father to resolve this mystery as a test of his leadership abilities and in turn Prince Anton once again calls upon Celine and Amelie to accompany his most trusted Lieutenant to travel to this area and get to the bottom of the problem.
The unraveling of this mystery reveals treachery, barbaric behaviors by those in power, unexpected twists and turns, as well as thought provoking revelations, and heartbreak.

The story is well written and kept this reader turning the pages with glee as the mystery unfolded. The characters were believable, likable, and a joy to get to know with the scale of emotions I experienced all over the charts hooking me right in. Having not read book one there was some world building missed and although the tale stood alone, I would recommend reading book one as there is obviously much that has gone on prior to this telling. The story ends well and leaves the reader eager for more and does not leave you hanging. While Witches in Red takes place in a time of high fantasy novels, it is a lighter less complicated read from the traditional tales and I would recommend this book to fantasy fans who enjoy a good mystery with a little paranormal twist. I am looking forward to reading book one and then continuing the adventure with the third installment. I received this book from NetGalley.

Book Review: The Mist-Torn Witches by Barb Hendee

The Mist-Torn Witches (The Mist-Torn Witches #1)
by Barb Hendee

Publisher: ROC, published by the Penguin Group, New York, N.Y.
ISBN: 978-0-451-41415-1
Released: May 2013

One day, a young noblewoman, Rhiannon, comes by to have her fortune read as her father wants her to marry warlord Sub-Prince Damek. She wants to know if she will give him a son as noblemen expect that. Celine doesn’t remember the woman’s name in connection with her first reading at age 16, when a young man had his read. He had not given his name at the time. But what Celine doesn’t know as due to that first reading and this one, hers and the young man’s fortunes are all tied up together. At Rhiannon’s reading, Celine’s abilities her mother has as a seer comes into power and she finds that if the woman marries Damek, he will have her strangled after the birth of his son. Damek sends his tax collector and men to kill them and destroy their place, but they are saved by Jaromir, who heads Damek’s younger brother, Sub-Prince Anton. He was sent by Anton to do a service. It seems there are young, beautiful women being murdered in his kingdom, drained of all life and reduced to dry husks. Celine is asked to use her abilities as seer to read the women of the kingdom’s futures—to see who is next on the murderer’s list.

I enjoyed Barb Hendee when she wrote the Noble Dead Saga series with her husband. But going alone with this fantasy series, with touch of mystery, she really hit a winner out of the park with this (obviously) first book. I couldn't put the book down and finished in a day. If you prefer urban fantasy over fantasy, don’t worry as this fantasy reads like an urban fantasy, just set in medieval times, with a hint of romance, murder, and political intrigue.

Not like most fantasies which are large tomes, this one is a good and fast read. My favorite of the characters? Amelie and Jaromir. Not so much Celine, going hot and cold in how she acted. As for Anton, he needed more fleshing out, and hopefully in the next book it will be. Like to see more of the attraction both he and Celine are beginning to feel.
