Taste Test

“What?” Will asked, putting his phone away. “Have I grown an extra head?”

Audra smiled to show she didn’t care about his choices. “It’s not my business. Sorry I couldn’t help overhearing.”

“What’s not your business?” He strolled closer, smiling slightly. “This is honesty hour, babe. If you’ve got a question, ask it.”

Audra hesitated, but his friendly smile encouraged her to go ahead. Maybe she was imagining that hint of danger in the depths of his eyes.

“Well, if we’re being honest, I’d rather you not call me babe.” Or sugar or hon or any other name he called the women he flirted with and probably went to bed with, and, again, so not her business. “It’s not an image I find professional.”

“Fair enough. Okay.”

“Okay? Just like that?”

Will shrugged. “Why not? It isn’t as though I don’t know your name.”

Audra bit her lip. She had no right to criticize anything about his social life.

“If there’s something else,” he added, raising an eyebrow, “spit it out and let’s go.” The glint in his eyes dared her.

That glint jabbed her like a needle. “I apologize for overhearing, but I couldn’t help it.” When he nodded, she continued, “Your business is your business, but I noticed...”

Will said nothing, just watched her with that little smile and that dangerous expression. Audra steeled her spine.

“I just wondered whether you always turn on the charm when you’re trying to divert a woman.”

“Sometimes. It usually works.”

“Based on these two phone calls, it seems to, though Denise Larrabee is smart and tenacious. Whoever you were talking to a minute ago also seemed to back down when you flirted with her.”

“Flirting is an ancient human custom,” Will responded. “Do you have a problem with it?”

“No, of course not.” Audra wheeled in exasperation. “I shouldn’t have brought it up, but it’s just hard to believe they let you get away with it.”

She turned back, only to find Will less than a hand span away, still with that cocky smile.

“So you’d be impervious?” he asked softly.

Yes. Of course. No hot guy would distract her from a goal she cared about. But some primitive instinct warned her not to say so. Audra picked a point over his shoulder and stared at it. Anything was better than looking at him.

“There’s no good answer to that. Just forget I mentioned it and--”

Will used two fingers to tip her chin up. Her eyes met his, and the words died in her throat. His cocky look faded into a searching, intent one. Then he leaned down and kissed her.

A flash of heat blanked Audra’s brain. The world spun, and she reached for the nearest solid anchor--Will. He cupped her cheek as his free arm slid around her waist, steadying her and tugging her gently against him. The full body contact generated another brain-blinding flare.

Will’s mouth was warm and soft on hers. Tantalizing. Demanding.

Audra made a small sound in her throat, or maybe Will did. It seemed to restore a measure of sanity. She pulled back, breaking the kiss.

He lifted his head, and his eyes were dazed for an instant before they darkened with consternation. Releasing her, he took a step back.

Audra fought to level her breathing. As kisses went, that had been a mild one, yet her blood raced and her heart pounded. What would a serious kiss with him be like?

Not that they had any business kissing at all.

“Damn.” Will sounded slightly breathless, something she wasn’t too big a person to relish just a bit.

He ran a hand over his face. “That should not have happened. It was my fault.”

“To be fair, I didn’t exactly push you away. But you’re right that it was inappropriate.”

Mind-bending, body-flaming, and marvelous but totally inappropriate.

Audra summoned the most casual voice she could. “It was also a sneaky way to win an argument. Anyway, like I said, I can’t believe they let you get away with it.”

Will gaped at her for a second before he grinned. “Well, that shows me. You win, Dr. Grayson.”

Because Angel Warriors Do It Better - The Grigori Legacy Blog Hop + Giveaway

This is one of my favorite urban fantasy series because it is a dark story of good vs evil and Poitevin's writing is poetic and beautiful. Bloggers are sharing their thoughts about the series.
1) Who is your favorite character in the Grigori Legacy series, and why? (Can be from any of the three books)
Sharon: The bad guy Lucifer, of course <G> It is really hard to pick a favorite because they are all so different. Michael has grown on me lately.

2) If you had to describe the Grigori Legacy series in three words, what would those words be?

Sharon: Intense, raw, emotional

3) Readers and reviewers have called this a “different kind of angel story.” Do you agree or disagree? Why?
Sharon: Very much agree. This isn’t a paranormal romance. The angels are warriors and their world has been thrown into chaos. They aren’t looking to fix their broken souls with the love of a good woman.

4) Who do you think the ideal reader is for this series?
Sharon: Urban fantasy fans, and those who love dark fiction. Bad things happen to good people and it is how our protagonist react to these events that makes the story so good.

5) The series has a lot of big "whoa/OMG!"-type moments. Which scene or character - or which book overall - has surprised you the most so far? (No spoilers, please!)
Sharon: Seth has a ton of OMG moments. I can’t go into any details without spoiling. Watching him rise so high only to fall so far and not knowing yet where he will end up has been crazy!

6) While the Grigori series is more UF than PNR, there is still a strong romantic element running through the books. Do you think Alex will get her HEA? If you could wave a magic romantic wand, who would you like to see her fly off into the sunset with? (Again, no spoilers!)
Sharon: This is a hard one. The one I thought Alex would end up isn’t an option anymore…depends on what Linda has planned. At the end of book three I don’t think Alex can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I am afraid there might not be one either, but I am hoping for her.

7) What is one thing you would like to see happen in the last book?
Sharon: Good to win.

Book 3: SINS OF THE LOST
Heaven and Hell are on the brink of war as Lucifer builds his Nephilim army and waits for his new agenda to become a reality — that of having a Nephilim child of his own bloodline to lead his forces to cataclysmic victory.

With rumors of the pending war rampant on Earth, Alex fights to save humanity from its own panic – leaving little time for her fledgling relationship with Seth, the man with heavenly origins who has captured her heart. But when Nephilim children begin to disappear, along with Alex’s own vulnerable niece, the inevitable war between Heaven and Hell becomes as personal as sin.

Heaven has its own plans to fight the coming apocalypse, but first it needs Seth back. Asked to betray the man she loves, Alex must turn for help to the soulmate she thought she’d given up — the Archangel Aramael, who may be her last chance to save her family and humanity from the ashes of Lucifer’s Armageddon.

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

47 Ronin
PG-13, 2 hr. 7 min.
Drama, Action & Adventure, Science Fiction & Fantasy
Directed By: Carl Rinsch
In Theaters: Dec 25, 2013 Wide
Universal Pictures - http://www.47roninmovie.com/
Keanu Reeves-Kai
Hiroyuki Sanada -Oishi
Kou Shibasaki -Mika
Tadanobu Asano-Lord Kira
Rinko Kikuchi-Witch
Min Tanaka-Lord Asano
From ancient Japan's most enduring tale, the epic 3D fantasy-adventure 47 Ronin is born. Keanu Reeves leads the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the leader of 47 outcast samurai. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors. 47 Ronin is helmed by visionary director Carl Erik Rinsch (The Gift). Inspired by styles as diverse as Miyazaki and Hokusai, Rinsch will bring to life the stunning landscapes and enormous battles that will display the timeless Ronin story to global audiences in a way that's never been seen before. -- (C) Universal

ronin – “The defining characteristic of a ronin is that he was a former samurai separated from service to a daimyo. The kanji that spell out the term "ronin" are literally translated as "wave person," as if he were set adrift to be tossed upon the waves of life. Sometimes, the term "ronin" is translated as "masterless samurai" - The Samurai Archives SamuraiWiki

47 Ronin is the little movie that could. Everyone has been predicting its failure since filming began in 2011. There were director disputes, creative disputes, studio disputes. You can read all about the disputes in the Los Angeles Times article by Chris Lee

47 Ronin is an awesome tale of Samurai honor and the Bushido way. The studios wanted an action packed visual bonanza, but the director wanted to focus on the drama aspect of the story, and I agree. There are still some visually exciting scenes of action and the costumes are stunning. The acting wasn't Oscar worthy, but not many are. I liked the movie. A lot. So did my mom and my husband.

There is a star crossed lover’s story between the half-breed servant Kai and the Samurai Master’s daughter Mika. They kept it a chaste love affair which was fitting for the tone of the movie. The violence isn't graphic and the PG-13 rating seems appropriate. Lots of heads roll, but there is no blood spewing. There is a deliciously evil shape changing witch!

this guy is in the movie for about 15 seconds

Dark Horse
If you are familiar with the 47 Ronin tale (Dark Horse has a graphic novel based on the story) then you know how it ends. While the writers took a lot of liberty with the story they did not change the ending. That would be like making a movie about the Titanic and everyone lives at the end. It is a bittersweet ending.

Should you see it? I am glad I did, and it was worth a matinee price. I like Keanu Reeves and the story the movie is based on. If you are looking for the next Oscar or a life changing experience don’t go and rent it. It doesn't deserve all the hating it is getting.

Sheep Book Review: Warrior by Kristina Douglas

Warrior is book three in The Fallen series by PNR author Kristina Douglas and was, at its heart, a meaningful story of love and adventure. Though Warrior lagged in bits I was overall entertained by the adventure and mystical angel worlds.

Plot:
Every little girl imagines, now and then, that she’s a princess held captive in a tower. But Victoria Bellona is almost twenty-five. And that whole fairy-tale scenario? That’s her real life. The drop-dead gorgeous man who rescues her is no Prince Charming. He’s the gruff archangel Michael, and he insists that Tory is the Fallen’s only hope for ending Uriel’s vicious rule. She insists he’s crazy.

According to the prophecy, Michael must marry this frustrating, fascinating creature, bed her, and drink her blood. But their fate is a double-edged sword. If they give in to their urgently growing desires, Tory will die in battle. If they refuse, she will die anyway, and with her, all of mankind. Michael is determined to find another solution when a traitorous kidnapper forces him into a deadly confrontation. Even if he can save Tory from Uriel’s ruthless clutches, will they ever really be together? Or is her fatal destiny—and the world’s—written in stone?

If I had to boil Warrior down to its very bones, you would find it had some impressive shanks. While I thought the story had a little too much fat on the top, there was plenty of meat for the story which had flavor and substance.

Victoria has been bred for one thing: to either be the latest reincarnation of a goddess or be killed on her twenty-fifth birthday. So not so many balloons and cake and more ritual sacrifices. Not long before the big day an angel appears to tell her he's taking her away from the only home she's ever known, and whisking her off to a different realm to be his wedded wifey. No dinner, no dates, zip, niltch, nada. Talk about your whirlwind marriages! And does Victoria have a choice? Not really, because it's basically marriage or death. She goes with the option that lets her keep living, thank you very much!

The story then jumps into a world filled with hunky, drop-dead gorgeous angels and their mates; this is a world without the fairy dust, halos, and ponies, though, it's all about the bloody fight against evil! The hulked out warriors of this saga can absolutely hold it down on the battle front and the ladies, while not as buff, certainly have powers of their own! The action was intense and nail-biting to the very end.

The romance between our lead pair was not an issue at all for me. The characters had a nice amount of build up and romantic connection that was easy to picture. Where I have the biggest issue was the constant back and forth with Michael. One second he's saying damn all the prophecies and the next he's pushing away the gal he's clearly in lust with, and this happens repeatedly thru the story which starts to get old. I would have liked a lot less of this whole aspect and more of what was going on in the world around them.

It's a tough balance putting characters in a vivid world with complex relationships, but what lacked was vital to this story. As someone who was walking in at this point, I really needed a frame of reference to help understand what was going on. At a point, the pair take on an Alice in Wonderland type of scenario and each level that they enter into is crazy and wonderful in equal parts. I was really frustrated with the lack of information on these worlds that they visited, especially the world that was drained of color, I would have liked more details on that place.

I can imagine that future books will give way to more details, but the not knowing was what killed more of my love for these characters. Overall this is a fun book that's worth the read.
