Book Review: Immortal Ink: A Tattoo Coloring Book Paperback – Coloring Book by Tania Maia, El Rose, François Gautier

Immortal Ink: A Tattoo Coloring Book Paperback – Coloring Book
by Tania Maia, El Rose, François Gautier
April 4, 2023
Publisher: Plume
96 pages
More than just a coloring book, Immortal Ink is a true celebration of tattoo art.

Featuring 45 incredible designs from talented tattoo artists, each illustration is as inspiring as it is fun to color. With artwork in eight different styles including Americana, Japanese, blackwork, and steampunk, each daring design offers you the opportunity to unleash your own creativity as you add your choice of stylish color. The accompanying text delves into the history and ethos of each genre and explores the rich and fascinating symbolism behind individual elements used in every spectacular piece.

Beautiful and distinctive, Immortal Ink will celebrate an art form that has captivated us for generations.

Great coloring options and learning opportunity! Immortal Ink covers popular tattoo styles and describes the meaning behind some of the iconic symbols used. Below is an example of how each tattoo coloring artwork is presented. One page is the explanation (in this case, Americana style) and then the artwork on the opposing page.

I was surprised at the quality of the paper used. It is cardstock and the thickest coloring book paper I've encountered. The book is smaller than most adult coloring books, but with tattoo art, this doesn't cause an issue with details. Immortal Ink has simple and complex coloring pages. So any age can enjoy.

If you enjoy coloring and learning, then try this one out!

About the Illustrators
Tania Maia is a Brazilian fashion designer and graduate from Santa Marcelina University in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She left the fashion profession to become a full-time tattooist in 2014. She has participated three times in the New York Empire State Tattoo Expo in New York City and has traveled around the world as a guest artist in different studios. In January 2018 she opened her own studio, Forasteiros Ink, in Lima, Peru. She teaches a successful online course in digital tattoo design, specializing in blackwork.

El Rose began tattooing professionally in 2016. Her style is illustrative blackwork, with delicate linework and lots of stippling. El creates most of her tattoos freehand, drawing them directly onto the skin rather than using a stencil and using the contours of the body to influence the design.

François Gautier is a French artist who has a passion for creation in all forms. After studying in the applied arts, product design and architecture sectors, he set up a workshop to experiment in illustration, design, sculpture, and glasswork. He now focuses on illustration, which he views as his favorite means of expression. He is the creator of three other coloring books: Dark Art (2021), Dimensions (2022), and the forthcoming Dark Art Gothica.

Character cards and map of Tulare Island from C. Vonzale Lewis' Blood and Sacrifice Chronicles.

Zealot (Blood and Sacrifice Chronicles, #2)
by C. Vonzale Lewis
Published by: Parliament House
Publication date: March 22nd 2022
Genres: Adult, Fantasy
Nicole Fontane thought her demons were buried deep enough. She was wrong.

After barely escaping the blood bath of the Harvest ritual, Nicole and her vigilante compatriots learn that there are others practicing blood magick on Tulare Island.

Hired to rid the island of the remaining blood magick users, Nicole and her allies come face to face with The Better Day Church and the mysterious Young Family, whose nefarious behavior is well known on the island. The murky organization stirs old memories of a cult buried deep in the Louisiana bayou—flickers of Nicole’s traumatic past and the altar she barely escaped.

But when Nicole receives an invitation to the Young family’s private residence to attend a secret meeting with The Daughters of the Vine—an elusive sect of women led by Gavina Young—she knows there is no escaping her fraught history with cults.

The invite is clearly a trap, but it’s also an opportunity to take down the church. Nicole soon learns that the sickness lurking behind the walls of the Young family’s manor runs far deeper than the banal allure of blood magick. The church’s matriarch harbors a predatory interest in Nicole’s power—barely disguising her desire to harness it.

Nicole must unravel the mysteries of her newfound abilities, or her first job may be her last. Worst of all, she may end up on the altar again.

My name is Carla Vonzale Lewis and I like my martinis shaken… never stirred.

Carla was born in Georgia, but please don’t mistake her for a Georgia peach. She’s more like a prickly pear. Speaking of being born, someone asked her recently if she remembered her birth. And she had to say, “Yes, I do remember that handsy doctor pulling me out into the cold. Right Bastard!!!”

Despite being born in the South, she grew up in California. Every once in a great while she gets to experience all four seasons. But mostly, it’s just heat.

When not writing, Carla enjoys reading, binge watching shows on Netflix, and trying to convince her husband that getting a dog is a wonderful idea.

Top Ten Books Every Grim Reaper Should Read by Crymsyn Hart

Top Ten Books Every Grim Reaper Should Read

Hi. My name is Kerstin Palmer.

Most people think that I don’t get any off time, but that’s not true. I have a tendency to catch up on my list quickly and have a few minutes between jobs. On those occasions, I always have a book with me tucked away in the pocket of my robe. It’s nice to have that quiet time, retreating to the nearest graveyard where I can lean against a tombstone under a nice weeping willow. Sometimes I retreat into a mausoleum, and lie atop a coffin flipping through the pages of whatever I’m reading at the moment.

However, there are a few essential books that every reaper must read. They capture the essence of what death is and give a little insight into the different universes, realms, dimensions, etc. that Death exists.

1. The Egyptian Book of the Dead
2. Our Name is Melancholy by Leilah Wendell
3. Whole Death Catalogue A Lively Guide to the Bitter End by Harold Schechter
4. Funeral Directing & Undertaking – How to Conduct Funerals 1928 version
5. Stories in Stone: A Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism and Iconography by Douglas Keister
6. Necromance: Intimate Portrayals of Death by Leilah Wendell
7. A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore
8. Graveminder by Melissa Marr
9. Born of The Night: The Gothic Fantasy Artwork of Joseph Vargo
10. Soul Reaper Series by Crymsyn Hart

Now that I’ve shared the short list of books that every reaper must read. I’m sure you’re wondering what is currently in my robe that I’m reading at the moment. Let’s see. Oh wait. I have two books.

1. The Making of a Monster by Gail Petersen
2. Death’s Dance by Crymsyn Hart

I hope you all get a chance to check out these wonderful selections. If not, well that’s okay, because one day I’ll be seeing you and then we can swap books.

by Crymsyn Hart
Being a psychic, you would think talking to the dead was a walk in the park. However, it’s not always that simple. The hooded specter haunting me is one I’ve been dreaming about since I was a kid. One day, he appeared in my bedroom mirror. Good. Evil. I don’t know what his true intentions are.

Enter Jackson, ghost hunting show host extraordinaire, and my ex, to save me from the big bad ghost.

From there…well…it’s been a world wind of complications. My house burnt down. I’m being stalked by an ancient evil and gotten myself back into the world of being a ghost hunting psychic. Jackson dragged me, along with a few other psychics, to a ghost town wiped off the map called Death’s Dance.

From there things went from bad to worse.

Guest Post: The Art of Darkness by Michael West (Hades' Disciples book tour)

The Art of Darkness

You know that old saying about, “You can’t judge a book by its cover?” Well, to a certain extent, it’s true. Often, the author who wrote the content of a book has little or no input in how their work will be packaged. Instead, what goes on the cover is at the sole discretion of their publisher. The creator simply has to sit back and trust that the marketing people know what they’re doing.

After all, cover art can make or break a book. If potential readers don’t like what they see when they look at your novel, if they don’t find anything in the cover image that speaks to them, they may not crack the spine and examine its content. And they almost certainly won’t buy it and display it on their coffee tables or bookshelves at home.

With my novels from Seventh Star Press, however, I’ve had the good fortune to have a lot of input into the creation of cover art, and a fantastic, award-winning artist in Matthew Perry. When it comes time to do a cover for one of my novels, Matt asks me, “What are you thinking of for this?” I will then give him my thoughts, an idea that I believe captures the essence of feel of the book, and he goes off to work his magic. The final results have always exceeded my wildest expectations. Over the years, I have had many readers tell me that they picked up my novels, having never heard of me before, simply because they were drawn to the amazing covers created by Matt.

I’m a very visual person. Perhaps it’s my background in film and television. When I write a scene, I want the reader to be able to see the action unfold like a movie in their minds, and I want them to see it, more or less, the way I envisioned it. And so, when Seventh Star Press approached me about featuring illustrations in my novels, I was all for it.

There are often times when I finish writing a sequence and I think to myself, “Man, that would make for a great illustration.” I usually send those passages to Matt and let him decide what speaks to him. He then sends me what he considers to be a “rough sketch.” Matt’s rough sketches could be finished drawings. They are that good! And every time he sends them to me, I am reminded of Doc Brown from Back to the Future, pointing to an intricate model and saying, “Sorry I didn’t have time to paint it or build it to scale.”

Matt has a knack for creating images that are the same, or sometimes even better than what I had imagined when I wrote the text. He has given me spider-dogs, demons, sea creatures, and even spider-men mating with dragons, all with unparalleled detail. Everything the man draws, I want to have it framed and hung on my wall. In fact...I do just that.
Ours is proof that artist and author can work together to bring readers one vision. Sometimes horrific, sometimes fantastic, and in the case of my latest novel, The Legacy of the Gods Book Two: Hades’ Disciples, they are a little bit of both.

I always look forward to working with Matt, and I know that my faithful readers love the visuals he brings to my text. As I sit down today and write Book Three of The Legacy of the Gods, Zeus’ Warriors, I see all kinds of passages that would make for great illustrations. And I cannot wait for everyone to see them!

Terrifying creatures exist all around us, hiding in plain sight. Ancient. Deadly. They gather in secret, conspiring, dreaming of nothing less than humanity’s destruction, and their numbers are growing.

Earl Preston knows the danger all too well. After tangling with a horde of mythological sea monsters in Colonial Bay, he has been tasked with finding these beasts and exposing their plans whatever they may be. But Earl is not the only one with a mystery on their hands. At the very top of the world, Carol Miyagi has stumbled onto an artifact from Earth’s past, something magnificent held captive in a prison of ice and snow. Now, Carol and Earl must work quickly to decipher the will of the gods–a plot that defies imagination–and to stop their followers from carrying it out.

They thought the nightmare was over, but they are about to discover that the horror has only just begun.

Hades Disciples is Book Two in the Legacy of the Gods Series.
