Execrpt: Plucked by the Orc (Regency Monster Romances, #1) Jenna Larkin + giveaway

Plucked by the Orc (Regency Monster Romances, #1)
Jenna Larkin
February 5th 2024
Genres: Adult, Historical, Romance
Carnival Row meets My Fair Lady with a steamy sensibility. Welcome to the first Regency Monster Romance, in which the Lords of the Hidden Realm have a place in Society but never in the hearts of London’s fine human ladies.

Until Now.

Scratching by as a flower girl, Iris Gabbert speaks first and asks questions later. All the better to survive the rough and tumble East End streets. So if an odd-looking bloke knocks over a basket brimming with a girl’s means of making a living, what else is she to do but give him a tongue lashing he won’t soon forget? Even if it was an accident. Even if his lordship dresses like a right dandy. Even if he is more alluring than any gent who has passed her way before.

Broad of shoulder and abrupt in manner, the infamous Lord Barrington presents a proposition that promises all the honey with none of the bee’s busy work. And no one ever accused Iris Gabbert of passing on an opportunity. Especially not if it brings her one step closer to her dream of buying a shop. For the small price of improving her manners and donning gorgeous gowns, no less.

Duncan Higgins, Second Duke of Barrington, prides himself on his astute observations of human behavior. All the better to mask the pain of never truly belonging in their sphere. Rejected by the woman he’d hoped to woo, Duncan has withdrawn from Society to focus on his anthropological magnum opus: The Curious Customs of the Human Ton. But when his mischievous younger brother Albion presents him with a dare, Duncan quickly embraces the challenge.

To win the wager, Duncan must transform a humble flower girl into a lady “worthy” of acceptance in Society. His work is cut out for him. The girl he intends to slip into their ranks is uncouth. She refuses to soften her voice. Her favorite bonnet sits crooked on her head, and the rest of her wardrobe is appalling. Yet when Iris Gabbert emerges from her first bath at his elegant Mayfair townhouse, the power of Duncan’s desire ignites.

With sufficient income from his family’s mines to indulge her every whim, Duncan draws Iris into his private and luxurious world. Duncan intends to fulfill her every desire. Every last one. But as a newly refined Iris makes her debut, she catches the eye of the Season’s most eligible human bachelor, triggering Duncan’s deepest fears of rejection. Faced with jealousies, misunderstandings, and a treacherous social landscape, can true love—and lust—prevail?

EXCERPT:
Duncan Higgins, the Second Duke of Barrington, tucked his muslin cravat tighter underneath his Parisian greatcoat. The evening performance of How You Like It had been crowded with patrons eager to see the new gas lighting at the Theatre-Royal. It was difficult to tolerate the stares his massive form and green-tinged skin attracted, but he could ensure his attire reflected the latest demands of the season.

Better to be respected, or even feared, than to find himself an object of scorn.

His father had stepped foot in London eighteen years prior, the first orc to do so. But Duncan’s height, the horns curling back on his head, and his unusual coloring—unusual on the streets of this city, at least—still drew stares. As in all things connected to the frivolous ton, no one stated anything outright. Rather, he was subject to the averted glances of children seeing one of his kind for the first time. Or the pursed lips of a mother with a daughter of marriageable age looking to catch a gentleman’s eye. A gentleman of wealth, manners, and title.

A human gentleman. They were not eager for their daughters to marry Duncan Higgins, even if he were five and twenty and met their other requirements. He’d learned that lesson well enough.

So be it. Duncan would remain at a distance, observing and taking notes on human society as a scientist would a colony of lemurs or some such.

His younger brother, Albion, would have deemed that too harsh. Albion and their mother came to London from the Hidden Realm two years after Duncan accompanied Father here. He didn’t understand what it had been like for Duncan in those early days. When grown women had screamed at the sight of orcs, no matter how fine their English clothes, and boys hurled rocks at their backs.

As he stepped out to the street this evening, an assortment of dandies packed the space outside the venerable theater, waiting on the carriages that would propel them to the next stop on their nightly rounds about the city. Despite the chill in the air, they left their greatcoats open, the better to showcase ruffled shirts, cravats folded crisply on the cross, and fitted trousers.

Albion often laughed at Duncan’s propensity for tracking human fashion, whilst Duncan argued that all manner of human customs were of interest. The apparel chosen for a particular season spoke to the values and aspirations of the ton. When living as an outsider, one could never know too much about a culture.

And Duncan was an outsider who literally stood out in a crowd. He ducked under the arches outside the theater’s foyer, side-stepping a matron with two daughters prancing before her. The ladies wore stunning multi-colored sapphires—pink, orange, amber, in every shade and gradient—sparkling on pendants hanging from the short pearl necklaces that were all the rage this season.

The rare gemstones originated in his land and were the source of his family’s wealth. Nevertheless, when the mother caught him glancing at her daughters’ jewels, she called them closer to her. Their finery was for the benefit of the human dandies. Not Duncan Higgins. Even if he could have made either of them a duchess.

At one time, such a snub would have caused Duncan great shame. Now, however, these women meant no more to him than the portraits he might examine at a public exhibition in one of the city’s galleries. He tipped his bespoke hat in their direction and continued, wanting only to locate a hackney coach so he might return to his townhouse in a timely manner.

Despite the indulgence of taking in a performance this evening, he wished to abide by his customary schedule, drafting three pages over a glass of port prior to retiring for the night. Duncan aspired to publish a book in the Hidden Realm so the orcs who came to London in the future were better prepared than he had been.

Considering additional comments for his section on the shenanigans of human mothers, Duncan neglected to mind his feet. Distracted, he stumbled over one of the humans milling in front of the theater, tipping a woven basket filled with flowers over in the process. The blossoms hit the sodden ground in a colorful spray of wilting clumps—pansies, snowdrops, and clematis. He nearly tumbled down beside them.

“Bloody hell,” he muttered, reaching for his handkerchief, twice the size of those used by other gentlemen, to wipe away the mud that had spattered his new coat. And just as the French styles were once again making their way across the Channel. Thanks to that scoundrel Napoleon Bonaparte, London had been deprived of Parisian fashions for several years.

“Hey there, ‘ya big lug!” a female voice called, rising above the din of the humans still bustling out of the theater. “Watch where you’re putting them huge green feet of yours, kitten.”

Duncan had been called many names in his life, but “kitten” had never before counted among their number. It took him a moment to realize the young woman was addressing him.

She clicked her tongue between her teeth as she attempted to reclaim the flowers. “A girl’s tryin’ to make a living here, you know.”

Her voice held the distinctive tinge of the East End, an accent he sometimes heard from shopkeepers. This woman’s outlandish appearance matched the Cockney drawl. Her walking dress and pelisse, both of which might have been a startling bronze hue when in fashion five years ago, clung to her slender figure in an indecent manner. A flamboyant blue-purple iris, its petals shaped like the fleur-de-lis of the old French royal family, with a jagged shot of golden color in the center, topped her bonnet.

To make matters even more ridiculous, he found himself staring at this woman, whose delicate form and features were at odds with the boldest feminine voice he’d had the pleasure of hearing since he left the Hidden Realm. In Duncan’s homeland, women were not given to the performative modesty of the ton. What was that phrase he’d heard a human gentleman use to describe a beguiling young lady who had only recently arrived in London from the country? A diamond in the rough. At the time, the expression had confused him, but now he thought he understood what it meant.

Book Review: Artfully Yours by Joanna Lowell

Artfully Yours
by Joanna Lowell
February 21, 2023
Sparks fly between a lordly art critic and a lady forger in this enthralling Victorian historical romance from the author of The Runaway Duchess.

Nina Finch isn't suited for a life of crime. Raised by her art-forger brother, she can paint like Botticelli. But she'd so much rather be baking gooseberry tarts. She finally has the money she needs to open her own bakery. Unfortunately, her brother's carelessness lands her—and their forgeries—directly under the nose of London's most discerning art critic, Alan De'Ath. De'Ath knows the paintings are fake. He doesn't know that Nina had a hand in their creation. In fact, he offers her a job in his household. Accepting it is the most dangerous thing she has ever done....

Alan takes pride in seeing things other people miss. He plans to catch the forger and cement his reputation. There's only one problem: the closer he gets to the beguiling woman he hired, the less he trusts his perspective. Nina isn't what she seems. But despite their false start, she just might hold the real key to his heart.

As Nina and Alan’s attraction grows, divided loyalties threaten to pull them apart and shatter their worlds. They’ll lose everything, or discover how powerful true love can be....

For years, art forger Nina Finch has produced fakes of the masters at the behest of her manipulative older brother Jack. Nina is a rare talent but really longs for a simpler life in the countryside, owning her very own bakery. When Nina inconveniently catches the attention of renowned art critic and social elite Alan De’Ath, she soon finds herself in an impossible situation. Desperate for income, Nina takes a position as Alan’s personal secretary as he embarks on a mission to prove that recently acquired paintings are fakes. Nina must assist Alan in his work to uncover the forger knowing full well that she is the culprit. Jack encourages the arrangement to gain insider knowledge of Alan’s operation despite the fact Nina is in great peril. An attraction immediately develops, but Nina cannot honestly forge any future with Alan with such a monumental secret between them.

As an art enthusiast, I was excited to read Artfully Yours. The combination of art, intrigue and romance was very appealing. Ultimately, however, this book was just okay for me. I didn’t connect fully with Nina or Alan. I was more entertained by other characters who were more on the periphery. Plus, I inexplicably dislike monkeys, and Nina’s pet marmoset was highly off-putting to this reader. I understand this book is part of a series with recurring characters, but it appears to be marketed as a standalone. At times I felt I’d picked this up somewhere in the middle and was not privy to dynamics I might have benefited from if I’d read previous connected books. As with all historical romances, the contemporary is an essential part of the tone. Issues of feminism and mental illness are incorporated, as is a seemingly non-gender-conforming character. These inclusions grant a relatability to the story for readers.

Book Review: How to Catch a Sinful Marquess (The Disreputable Debutantes #3) By Amy Rose Bennett

How to Catch a Sinful Marquess (The Disreputable Debutantes #3)
By Amy Rose Bennett
August 25, 2020
Berkley
336 pages
A reserved debutante and a former soldier make an unlikely but fated match as they hasten for the Isle of Skye.

Orphaned heiress Olivia de Vere should have the world--or at least the men of the ton--at her feet. But when she's thrown out of a young ladies' academy, Olivia doubts she'll ever find someone who will love her, rather than her bank account. To make matters worse, her dissolute cousin Felix is determined to marry her against her wishes. A virtual prisoner in her guardians' London townhouse, Olivia can’t help but develop a tendre for her neighbor, a handsome Scottish marquess.

Battle-scarred in more ways than one, Hamish MacQueen, Lord Sleat, has braved many dangers in life. But nothing has quite prepared him for the shock of having a young child dumped on his doorstep, with a note claiming she’s his daughter. Just in the nick of time his pretty neighbor appears, offering to act as a nursemaid for the young girl on their journey to his estate in Scotland. He suspects she has her own reasons for wanting to flee the country…
The close traveling quarters leads to a fierce attraction between Olivia and Hamish that seems impossible to resist. But when ghosts from the past and monsters from the present threaten to tear them apart, will their unlikely love survive?

How to Catch a Sinful Marquess is a lovely historical romance that had me hooked throughout. The book is the third installment in Amy Rose Bennet’s Disreputable Debutantes series. The Sinful Marquess in question is Hamish McQueen, Lord Sleat, a Scottish Marquess and well-known rakehell. Almost accidentally the young heiress Olivia de Vere finds herself thrust front in centre into Sleat’s complicated life. The two come to a mutually beneficial arrangement as a means to an end. However, as one would anticipate, the dynamic becomes fraught with lust and eventually something deeper.

Historical Romance has its appeal. In a sphere so fraught with rules and restraint, sexual tension is sure to simmer. Sinful Marquess is no exception. Who doesn’t love a tall strapping Scottish nobleman? And if his powerful physic, title, and abundant wealth weren’t enough to make you swoon, his lord has a black leather eye patch that serves to hide a war injury. Need I say more? Olivia is sweet, but with a rebellious streak that makes her relevant for a contemporary reader. While I wouldn’t consider a steady stream of historical romance, I may read the rest of this series. It would seem Bennett does historical romance I can get behind.

In the end, the chasm dividing the two lovers seems trivial, much like a romantic comedy. The dramatic, sensual lead up is the best proves to be the part. Oh. And the eye patch. That was pretty awesome.

Excerpt: A Dark and Stormy Knight (Victorian Rebels #7) by Kerrigan Byrne + giveaway

A Dark and Stormy Knight (Victorian Rebels #7)
by Kerrigan Byrne
June 2nd 2020
266 pages

Genres: Adult, Historical Romance
This Knight of the Crown is driven by a painful past and a patient fury… and his entire life is a lie.

Sir Carlton Morley is famously possessed of extraordinary will, singular focus, and a merciless sense of justice. As a man, he secured his fortune and his preeminence as Scotland Yard’s ruthless Chief Inspector. As a decorated soldier, he was legend for his unflinching trigger finger, his precision in battle, and his imperturbable strength. But as a boy, he was someone else. A twin, a thief, and a murderer, until tragedy reshaped him.

Now he stalks the night, in search of redemption and retribution, vowing to never give into temptation, as it’s just another form of weakness.

Until temptation lands—quite literally—in his lap, taking the form of Prudence Goode.

Prim and proper Pru is expected to live a life of drudgery, but before she succumbs to her fate, she craves just one night of desire. On the night she searches for it, she stumbles upon a man made of shadows, muscle and wrath… And decides he is the one.

When their firestorm of passion burns out of control, Morley discovers, too late, that he was right. The tempting woman has become his weakness.

A weakness his enemies can use against him.

beneath her knees, but she didn’t seem capable of holding still enough for him to manage.

“Upon my word,” she exclaimed from behind mountains of silk. “I’m frightfully sorry! Are you hurt?”

Morley opened his mouth to assure her he was unharmed, but she didn’t wait for a reply.

Her next sentence was spoken in one breath. “I’m forever ungainly, clumsy my sisters call me, and in a place such as this it’s rather impossible not to look everywhere at once and I was honestly attempting to look nowhere at all and you’re rather dark—” She finally crested her skirts and wrestled them beneath her arms to look at him. She took a breath to amend… “No, not dark. Dazzling.”

Morley blinked down at her, suddenly wishing he’d ever thought to steal a moment from crime reports and newspapers to crack the spine on a book of verse.

Because the woman in his arms was a poem, and he hadn’t the words to describe her.

His hold of her became suddenly very careful. Delicate, like one would hold a tea cup in a lady’s parlor rather than the tin mugs at the Yard.

“Oh,” she said breathlessly as if discovering clarity. “It’s you. You’re who I’ve come looking for.”

Even through his building confusion, some strange part of him was as glad she’d—quite literally—stumbled upon him as she seemed to be.

He shook his head, trying to dislodge the sensation.

As Morley always did when out about his nocturnal business, he adopted a bit of his childhood cockney accent. “Do I know you?”

The lanterns painted the shadows of her ridiculously long eyelashes across cheeks that could have been chiseled from the whitest of Roman marble. Those lashes fringed wide, dark eyes two sizes too large for her delicate features. The effect intensified her dramatic expression as she seemed to take him in with identical wonder.

“Yes, you’ll do rather nicely, I think.” she breathed, apropos of nothing. Her voice, alternately husky and sweet, seemed incongruous with this place. There was temptation in it, but no sin. Innocence, but also desire.

She leaned forward on his lap, and he became very aware that he held her like a man held his bride when crossing the threshold.

The thought terrified him, and yet he couldn’t seem to let her go.

“Which one are you?” she asked as though to herself as she conducted a thorough examination of his features. “I can’t think of any biblical hero you’d resemble…and none with a mask, besides. I like a bit of mystery.”

He cocked his head at that. Biblical? This was all lunacy. He neither knew this woman nor did he want to. If she was a prostitute, she was a bloody good one, but he was no customer. He should lift her to her feet and send her on her way. He’d work to do and—

The soft scrape of her fingers against his shadow beard froze him in place. She watched her own hand with a dazed, almost unfocused gaze as she discovered the line of his jaw with a feather-light touch before cupping it in her small palm.

The tender curiosity demonstrated in the motion unstitched something hard within him.

“No…” she whispered. “No, you’re no hero.”

He could do little else than hold his breath, his every sense hanging upon her next words. What would be her verdict, he wondered? Would she compliment or condemn him?

“You’re an angel aren’t you? An Arch angel, perhaps. Or a fallen one? A warrior…” she decided. “But… for which side?”

“I’m no angel,” he warned. “I’m nothing but a shadow.” Morley hated to disappoint the fanciful woman, hated to dispel whatever magic she was weaving through him with her touch. But it was better he told the truth. Better for them both.

“How ridiculous of me, I beg your pardon. I’d like to say that I’ve been caught up in all this fantasy, but it’d be a lie. I’m like this all the time.” At this she gave the ghost of a giggle, and the sound was more pleasant than the rush of the fountain beneath which they’d fallen. “You’re a very solid shadow, sir, if I may say so.” Her gaze finally focused to resolute. “How much?”

He frowned. “How much?”

“How much?” she encouraged meaningfully with a thrust of her sharp chin. “For a night with you?

Book Review: Warlock from Wales (The Cauldron Effect Book Two) by Shereen Vedam + giveaway

by Shereen Vedam
May 21, 2019
Genre: Fantasy Regency Romance, PNR
ISBN: 978-1-989036-01-3
ASIN: B07NYV3X3M
Number of pages: 284
Word Count: 86,890
Cover Artist: Desiree DeOrto
A historian in search of truth. A warlock charged to stop her.

When Hugh is yanked from his apprenticeship and summarily assigned to guard a human female, he is justly incensed.

But when a water demon snatches her from under his nose, he sets off on a desperate race to save her, and prove he is a warlock to be reckoned with.

Warlock from Wales is a paranormal historical romance set in 1816 England. Mary Bright, an inquisitive amateur historian, is thrust into the world of witches and warlocks when her brother becomes entangled in a plot to expose magic to world. Mary is set on saving her brother and the lore of the Wychan race. To do this, Mary must seek the assistance of the lore witch, the keeper of all Wychan-related documents. Hugh Renfrew Price, a young warlock on the rise, is charged by the Warlock Council to duplicitously accompany Mary on her search for knowledge. Once Mary obtains the necessary documents, Hugh must destroy all evidence of his race or face severe sanctions at the hands of the council. Almost immediately, Hugh is captivated by Mary and conflicted about his mission.

Vedam’s storytelling is magical. The world she weaves is fantastic and imaginative; a world where all objects are sentient and part of the magic. Musical instruments, haystacks even, start each chapter with a unique, albeit quirky, perspective on the story. These interludes are often comical and always endearing and give the story added whimsy.

This is not my usual romance reading fare. It was far too chaste for me. Vedam builds the romance between Hugh and Mary in a titillating way, wholly appropriate for the time. Sadly, the slow and suggestive build up doesn’t ultimately lead to much. But what this book lacks in steam, it more than makes up for with charm.

I had not read book one in this series prior to beginning Warlock from Wales but found it readable as a standalone.

Excerpt:
The Honorable Mary Bryght, eighteen-year-old daughter of the late Viscount Holywell, faltered and came to a startled halt. She’d been traveling through the woods to her friend's home to deliver some astonishingly grand news about her brother. A sound drew her gaze toward a strand of willows that drank from a small pond. There, a stranger in a dark cape watched her, tapping a riding crop against his Hessians. At the malevolence emanating from him, the hairs on Mary’s arms stood to attention.

In the space of one glance, her mood shifted from cheerful to fearful. She swallowed, tasting dread, and swiftly gauged how fast she must run to reach Rose’s cottage before this stranger’s long strides reached her. She took one deep breath in readiness to sprint, when the man appeared at her side, his large hand grasping her upper arm so hard it pinched.

She cried out. He dropped his riding crop and covered her mouth with his hand, swamping her senses with a pungent aroma of horse sweat and leather.

Fifteen feet! That’s how far away he’d been. Yet, he had closed the distance between them as if it had only been two feet. Heart pounding in terror, she kicked his shin, bit hard onto a gloved finger and with her free hand, punched his throat as her father had taught her.

He grunted and loosened his grip.

Mary tore away and ran. Within a half dozen steps her body froze. There was no other way to describe the bizarre experience. She could not shift one foot, one hand, one finger. She was a statue in mid-motion.

Book Review: The Villainous Viscount: Or the Curse of the Venn’s by Lucinda Elliott

The Villainous Viscount: Or the Curse of the Venn’s
by Lucinda Elliott
August 23, 2016
285 pages

An appreciative satire of the cliches of classical Gothic.

When Clarissa Greendale inherits the fortune of disreputable uncle she hardly knows, she does not expect to find herself forced into marriage with an aristocratic fortune hunter and wild, brawling, debauched social outcast. Not only that, but her name featured some way down on the list of eligible heiresses he planned to court. Still, Clarinda has always found Harley Venn set off the most unmaidenly tinglings in her; that is one consolation...

Yet neither did Clarinda expect to inherit the legacy of a wrongdoing from half a century before. For the wicked if beguiling Lord Venn seems to have inherited a family curse, which, having dispatched the main perpetrators of the old crime, now moves on to their heirs, who are just as wild a set of rakes as their elders. There are rumours of violent deaths preceded by appearances from an inexorable hooded spectre, of inexplicable strikes of lightning, and of haunted mirrors.

The light-hearted Harley Venn dismisses all these as conjuring tricks. He even hires a drunken charlatan of a professional magician to prove it.

Clarinda is far from sure that there is any rational explanation. Still, it would take more than an enforced marriage to an incorrigible pugilistic libertine or persecution from malevolent spectres to damage her steely nerves and sense of the ridiculous.

This lively Gothic comedy, written as a good natured satire of the cliches of classical Gothic, gives the reader a warm-hearted and courageous heroine, a rascally but beguiling anti-hero and an authentic historical background to the delightfully over-the-top adventures, a cast of wholly believable characters, an engaging love story and many chills on its way to its tumultuous conclusion.

The Villainous Viscount, a Regency Era paranormal romance tells the tale of a family curse set to destroy a tight-knit group of douche bros 1820s style. Ultimately, why should the reader care if a group of lecherous drunks is getting what they deserve? Well, two words: Harley Venn. Venn is the villainous viscount and for all his liabilities, he’s just so darn likable as the perfect, imperfect anti-hero. The accidental death of his close friend has Harley contemplating a more domesticated life. His dwindling bank account all but forces him to seek a wife with a fortune. With little more to offer than his devastating good looks, remarkable musical ability, and title, Venn sets out to find a wife. And, in an era of social restriction and repression, Clarinda Greendale has little recourse but to accept Venn’s offer of partnership. Together the pair must guard against the curse as those in Harley’s social circle are targeted by a malevolent phantom.

I love the enriching benefits of historical fiction. The Villainous Viscount is a well-researched glimpse at the absurdity of 1820s English high society. Clarinda and Harley make a sweet pair once they move past one another’s surface qualities. They both stand to learn much from the other. And, of course, historical fiction cannot help but inject modern sensibilities into the storyline. Elliott raises questions of sexual equality and consent; ideas I’m certain would’ve been absolutely outlandish at this time. Clarinda ponders, “Perhaps all women, or none, are sluts, any more than men.” Later, she voices her frustration with the male/female power imbalance: “Still, I don’t see why the woman in the case always has to suffer the consequences, and never the man, she should blame the libertine, not one of his former victims. He had all the power after all.” While Clarinda is a little too virtuous for my tastes, her enlightenment makes her an interesting character.

The story of the curse itself was decent, but the relationship dynamics are what most held my interest. Overall a good read for fans of historical fiction.

Book Review: Bite at First Sight (Scandals with Bite #3) by Brooklyn Ann + givaway

Bite at First Sight (Scandals with Bite #3)
by Brooklyn Ann

Mass Market Paperback, 352 pages
April 7th 2015
by Sourcebooks Casablanca
When Rafael Villar, Lord Vampire of London, stumbles upon a woman in the cemetery, he believes he’s found a vampire hunter—not the beautiful, intelligent stranger she proves to be.

Cassandra Burton is enthralled by the scarred, disfigured vampire who took her prisoner. The aspiring physician was robbing graves to pursue her studies—and he might turn out to be her greatest subject yet. So they form a bargain: one kiss for every experiment. As their passion grows and Rafe begins to heal, only one question remains: can Cassandra see the man beyond the monster?

All Cassandra Burton wants is to become a physician, a nearly impossible feat for a woman in Regency England. Because she is a woman she has had to resort to grave robbing in order to learn more about the human body. When she’s taken prisoner by a scarred vampire one night, she does what any other determined woman would: bargain with him.

Believing her to be a vampire hunter, Rafael Villar, the Lord Vampire of London couldn’t be more surprised to find that Cassandra is an aspiring physician. Unless of course he counts the fact that now she wants to study him. Their bargain starts off simple enough but soon, Rafe and Cassandra begin to fall for one another and that presents a whole new set of problems.

Brooklyn Ann has an elaborate style of writing. It’s not over the top to the point of boredom, but it provides fluid, easy to picture details that immerse a reader into a world of ballrooms, back alleys, graves and vampires. This is the second book of hers that I’ve read and both times I’ve never had a problem picturing her characters or scenery. She’s that descriptive with her writing. I enjoy her mix of paranormal and historical.

Cassandra is just my type of heroine. She lives in a time where women were severely oppressed yet she carries herself with this attitude of “Damn the establishment, I want more!” and it doesn’t just apply to her medical studies. She’s still a young woman but she’s quite mature and intelligent. She’s also fearless and extremely curious, which is what leads her to agree to the bargain with a vampire. Rafe on the other hand, is reluctant and in the previous books was broody and a bit bland. However, Bite At First Sight readers get to see a different side of him as he falls in love with Cassandra. He is a kind, caring and considerate of her, often stepping back and letting Cassandra have her way. Even he was surprised with how she stepped into his life, took control and refused to let him give up on himself.

Bite at First Sight is the third book in Ann’s Scandals with Bite series and frankly is one of the best ones. It’s a little darker than the previous books but in a great way. The pace gave me time to reacquaint myself with events from the first book, catch up on what I missed in the second, and allowed me a chance to know and care about Rafe and Cassandra. While they’re not the most passionate couple in the series to date, there’s something charming, sweet and endearing about them. It wasn’t just about their love story though, conflict, betrayal and danger added to the already intriguing storyline without overwhelming me as a reader. I never felt like there was too much going on. Just enough to push Rafe and Cassandra forward as characters.

Technically, Bite at First Sight can be read as a standalone but if you get the chance, do try and read the first two books as well.

About the Author:
Colorado. Canon. Curls. CJs. Chuck Norris.

Born and raised in this beautiful state —very nearly with a camera in hand— I never left. I started my own family, got used to the curls, went to college, built a CJ, started a business, and totally beat the daylights out of Chuck Norris, all with a camera in hand.

Spending my days in parenting chat rooms I got highly adept with one-handed typing and I can still type just about as fast with one hand as I can with two. It’s a great talent to have when engrossed in a scene and in need of a hit of caffeine. Once I finished my first novel I quickly realized: I was born a photographer.

From the realization that someone ELSE would be shooting the cover of MY book my control-freak took over. What started as an easy cover shoot ballooned into this completely new kind of media, designed specifically for digital book readers. The Illustrated Romance.

I live and thrive off chaos and the constant flow of the creative process. I wears shorts and flip-flops year-round —much to the chagrin of my friends and family.

The images from my book started a ruckus, and from there, #StudioSmexy was born, I’ve since shot over 300 romance novel covers, and currently shoot custom images for very special clients.
