Book Review: Warlock from Wales (The Cauldron Effect Book Two) by Shereen Vedam + giveaway

by Shereen Vedam
May 21, 2019
Genre: Fantasy Regency Romance, PNR
ISBN: 978-1-989036-01-3
ASIN: B07NYV3X3M
Number of pages: 284
Word Count: 86,890
Cover Artist: Desiree DeOrto
A historian in search of truth. A warlock charged to stop her.

When Hugh is yanked from his apprenticeship and summarily assigned to guard a human female, he is justly incensed.

But when a water demon snatches her from under his nose, he sets off on a desperate race to save her, and prove he is a warlock to be reckoned with.

Warlock from Wales is a paranormal historical romance set in 1816 England. Mary Bright, an inquisitive amateur historian, is thrust into the world of witches and warlocks when her brother becomes entangled in a plot to expose magic to world. Mary is set on saving her brother and the lore of the Wychan race. To do this, Mary must seek the assistance of the lore witch, the keeper of all Wychan-related documents. Hugh Renfrew Price, a young warlock on the rise, is charged by the Warlock Council to duplicitously accompany Mary on her search for knowledge. Once Mary obtains the necessary documents, Hugh must destroy all evidence of his race or face severe sanctions at the hands of the council. Almost immediately, Hugh is captivated by Mary and conflicted about his mission.

Vedam’s storytelling is magical. The world she weaves is fantastic and imaginative; a world where all objects are sentient and part of the magic. Musical instruments, haystacks even, start each chapter with a unique, albeit quirky, perspective on the story. These interludes are often comical and always endearing and give the story added whimsy.

This is not my usual romance reading fare. It was far too chaste for me. Vedam builds the romance between Hugh and Mary in a titillating way, wholly appropriate for the time. Sadly, the slow and suggestive build up doesn’t ultimately lead to much. But what this book lacks in steam, it more than makes up for with charm.

I had not read book one in this series prior to beginning Warlock from Wales but found it readable as a standalone.

Excerpt:
The Honorable Mary Bryght, eighteen-year-old daughter of the late Viscount Holywell, faltered and came to a startled halt. She’d been traveling through the woods to her friend's home to deliver some astonishingly grand news about her brother. A sound drew her gaze toward a strand of willows that drank from a small pond. There, a stranger in a dark cape watched her, tapping a riding crop against his Hessians. At the malevolence emanating from him, the hairs on Mary’s arms stood to attention.

In the space of one glance, her mood shifted from cheerful to fearful. She swallowed, tasting dread, and swiftly gauged how fast she must run to reach Rose’s cottage before this stranger’s long strides reached her. She took one deep breath in readiness to sprint, when the man appeared at her side, his large hand grasping her upper arm so hard it pinched.

She cried out. He dropped his riding crop and covered her mouth with his hand, swamping her senses with a pungent aroma of horse sweat and leather.

Fifteen feet! That’s how far away he’d been. Yet, he had closed the distance between them as if it had only been two feet. Heart pounding in terror, she kicked his shin, bit hard onto a gloved finger and with her free hand, punched his throat as her father had taught her.

He grunted and loosened his grip.

Mary tore away and ran. Within a half dozen steps her body froze. There was no other way to describe the bizarre experience. She could not shift one foot, one hand, one finger. She was a statue in mid-motion.

In the wake of an Archangel attack on Cougar Creek, Storm is seething with a need for revenge against the hunter organisation and the key to it might be the petite blonde mortal he’s locked in his cabin, one he’s determined to make sing for him. Only the beauty has a fiery temperament to match his own, and the more time he spends with her, the more she stokes a fire inside him. One that fills him with a startling and undeniable need to make her sing in another way—in his arms.

Gabriella isn’t going to take her captivity lying down. She’s going to give the pig-headed brute holding her against her will hell until he finally believes she’s innocent. He might be a cougar shifter, but she isn’t afraid of him. Or at least she isn’t afraid of what he is. The way he affects her, the flames that lick through her whenever they’re close, terrifies her though, because the longer she’s around the towering sexy-as-sin shifter, the hotter that fire blazes, and it’s only a matter of time before it burns away all her restraint.

With the mating heat and the attack bringing cougars back to the creek, Gabriella is a complication Storm doesn’t need, but she’s one that he wants… because she might just be his one true mate.

For the last twenty years, Cobalt has burned with a need of one female, a beautiful raven-haired cougar who captured his heart the moment he set eyes on her. His position as pride protector has been a blessing at past mating gatherings, keeping females away, but this time it feels like the worst of curses, because the female who has bewitched him so thoroughly is taking part for the first time and all he can do is watch as males battle for her.

As much as she hates the way her mother controls everything in her life, Ember is thankful for it as she constantly turns away suitors, unaware of the pain she’s sparing Ember from with every male she rejects. Every male who isn’t the gorgeous blond with darkness in his eyes and an easy smile she burns for with an intensity that scares her, awakens feelings in her that have her verging on doing something reckless. Damaged goods he might be, dangerous and unpredictable, but with every contest over her that pulls her closer to her doom, she grows more determined to follow her heart, no matter the consequences.

With every fight over the right to Ember, the tethers on Cobalt’s feelings twist and threaten to snap, a torment he cannot bear and one that has him willing to risk it all, because a single kiss would make even the harshest punishment worth it. He would die for one moment with her… his fated mate.

Went to see Deadpool 2 with my daughter Holly and one of her Marvel loving friends. We had a blast! The whole theater had a blast. I haven't laughed that hard for that long at a movie...ever. There are so many in-jokes and references to other superhero movies I couldn't keep up with them.

Yeah, it was kind of predictable in parts, but there are a few WTF moments that will have you laughing and screaming with disgust and joy. I haven't had so much fun at the movies in a while. Of course you have to have a pretty sick sense of humor, but that goes without saying...this is Deadpool.

Josh Brolin is a good-looking man and I refuse to make any jokes about laying Cable...

#NCDEADPOOL hung out in front of the theater before the movie. We all got pics with him. He even corrupted my daughter!
#ncdeadpool, Deadpool cosplay#ncdeadpool, Deadpool cosplay

There are two after-scenes right after the initial end credits. At the end, end...there isn't visual after-scene, but there is an audio one!

If you liked the first Deadpool movie then you will love this one. I think it was funnier than the first, or I could just be immature ;)

Holly and I give it 5 Holy Sheep balls
Her friend Carlo gave it 4... *rolls eyes*

THE FOUR HORSEMEN (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan) return for a second mind-bending adventure, elevating the limits of stage illusion to new heights and taking them around the globe. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public's adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than WALTER MABRY (Daniel Radcliffe), a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all.

Now You See Me (the first movie) took me and my family by surprise. So we were all pumped to see NYSM2, and after seeing Warcraft (bleh) the day before, we needed something good. And we weren't disappointed. Some have been saying the second one is better than the first...I wouldn't go that far. But it was just as good. I like that they show you how the magic tricks work.

It was predictable, if you pay attention, but still a lot of fun. I like all the actors and they had great chemistry together. And for once, I didn't see Harry Potter when Daniel Radcliffe was on screen. My daughter (15) and I agree that Dave Franco is a cutie pie.

This one is definitely worth a matinee price and if you loved the first one, worth the full price.

Sheep Book Review: Guarded (Tidewater #2) by Mary Behre

Guarded (Tidewater #2)
by Mary Behre

Mass Market Paperback, 320 pages
Published August 5th 2014
by Berkley

She’s given up on finding love…

Veterinarian Shelley Morgan has always preferred animals to humans, and not simply because she can communicate with them psychically. Unlike most people she’s known, animals have never broken her heart. But after six months in her new town, some of her favorite four-legged companions begin disappearing from the local zoo. Determined to track down the animals and their thief, the telepathic vet decides to investigate, unknowingly delving into a deadly mystery…

He’s ready to make her heart go wild…

Although his bear-like physique has been an advantage in the Tidewater Police Department, Dev Jones’s size often intimidates people. Only Shelley has seen past his massive build to the intelligent man inside, but that was years ago. So when she contacts him requesting his help to solve a series of animal kidnappings, he’s eager to reconnect with her. But the thefts escalate to murder and all the evidence points to Shelley as the killer, and Dev faces a devastating choice: forsake his career or risk losing the woman he’s grown to love.

Guarded is the second book in the Tidewater series and picks up right where book one, Spirited, left us. The beginning is full of humor and primes the pump for some rollicking good fun, but soon takes a more serious tone with the unveiling of the mystery of this particular installment, as well as the reuniting of two long lost sisters.

Shelly is a veterinarian who just happens to have an ability to telepathically communicate with animals with the exception of dogs, which seem to generally want to eat her. While this does provide an occasional bit of comic relief the book does tend towards a more serious adventure.

The writing continues to be well executed and while this is the second installment in the series, it can be read as a standalone with some crossover between characters that is very well done. I have to admit that while I enjoyed Guarded and hope to continue the series, I did not enjoy it quite as much as book one. I think this is primarily due to the fact that I found Shelly's actions at times imprudent and a bit annoying and I would rate this a 3.5 to 4 sheep read rather than a solid 4 sheep.

The ending is very satisfying and I do look forward to seeing what the next adventure has in store for us. I would recommend this book to alternative fiction fans to enjoy a lighter tale and maybe those who have a bit of an animal activist lurking beneath the surface. I received this book via NetGalley.
