KICKSTARTER! The A, B, Zeees, Part II - Z is for Zombie + giveaway

The A, B, Zeees, Part II - Z is for Zombie

💀This Kickstarter is for a full color zombie alphabet book; the second book in my A, B, Zeees series!💀

Kickstarter Link

Part II - Z is for Zombie
is a chronicle of greed, death by misadventure (or unnatural love...,) and zombies being...zombies. It's also a cautionary tale of what happened to the people who didn't read the original A, B, Zeees book, and weren't able to tell the difference between grrmuflmt (I'm full) and grmmuflmet (I like the look of your ears!) Maybe you'll learn something that will help keep you alive in the case you encounter a zombie. But probably not.

Z is for Zombie is an alphabet book for all the zombie "lovers" in your life!

The A, B, Zeees, Part I

The first book was a way to understand the zombie language, so when they say "wafnagar," you know they just want a hug. My hope was that by enabling better human/zombie communication, I could reduce the stigma associated with being undead.

Here's a look at the rewards you can get with your pledge!

BOOK II and BOOK I

The Story Behind the Story with fantasy author Selah Janel

The holidays are one of those times that put the good and not-so-great points of one’s life in high contrast. There’s (somewhat enforced) joy all around. It’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, yet life goes on. Illness, breakups, accidents, death, memories of hard times—they all still happen. So how do you carry on, especially when everything seems to sparkling all around you, without you? Wouldn’t it be nice to have things just magically fall into place?

I will admit this time of year isn’t the easiest for me. I have very good memories of holidays past, and very difficult memories. If something weird or awful is going to happen, it feels like December is the month that’s the biggest target. Through it all, though, the possibility and hope of the season keeps me coming back. I want to believe that things work out, that people are decent, and we can all work to be better. I also tend to be a realist. When it came time to try my own spin on a seasonal tale, I wanted both sides of the coin to be shown. Life can be good, but it also isn’t easy—even when it’s good.

Holly and Ivy starts directly after a Christmas where Holly’s life falls apart. It’s a pretty standard chick lit opening, yet I still feel for her. We all have those moments where life is upended and are forced into situations to make things work. We don’t all have an imaginary friend who turns out to be real with a magic gift up their sleeve.

Faerie lore has always fascinated me, and the mental image of a dryad in a Christmas tree is the seed that grew into Holly and Ivy. What started as typical holiday romance tropes turned into an unexpected look at personal growth and the consequences of magic. In some ways, big-city gal forced back into small town life has become a cliché, but it was also the chance to dig into Holly’s emotions as she tried to claw back from heartbreak and probably a healthy dose of imposter syndrome.

Then there’s Ivy. While the temptation to make a magic character an all-wise ‘fix-it’ being was there, it was way more fun to let the chaotic, somewhat naïve, somewhat impertinent faerie be who she was. She’s fickle, she likes to gossip with the birds and animals about the elitist faeries across the veil, and she doesn’t get humanity. She’s flippant, carefree, emotional, supportive, and cranky, depending on the moment. Her moods change often. Her whole world is the Christmas tree farm owned by Holly’s parents. Despite her bias against humans and Holly’s time away, she supports her friend, though the extent of it isn’t truly known until the finale.

Holly takes time to find her footing, even with a little magical help. She’s wary coming off of major disappointment and heartache. She’s extremely hard on herself. She also alternates between wanting to be a good friend and getting caught up in her own life—then juggling the guilt that brings when things improve for her. It takes her a while to come to terms with everything, but deep within her is a strength that is finally brought out by the end of the story.

I loved writing these two and all their emotional extremes, both in the original short story version of this title, and now expanding it to a full novella. It was nice to be able to put messy emotions into a genre that traditionally is usually tied up with a nice tidy bow. I suppose making them confront the realities of their situations stems from many of my own complicated Christmases. And while there is a happy ending, magic still comes with a price. As Holly attempts to reassure herself toward the end of the story—things work out a Christmas, though I would add that we don’t always get to choose how they work out. And that’s okay. Magic and loss, love and heartache, light and dark coexist, after all. Part of the magic of the holiday season is feeling a sense of love in the darkest and coldest part of the year. Sometimes those shining stars and candle sparks that help you find your way are the best part of the season.

Holly is forced to return to her parents’ farm after she loses her job and goes through the worst breakup of her life. Incapacitated by hopelessness and embarrassment, she doesn’t expect to bump into a forgotten childhood friend who isn’t supposed to exist.

Ivy is a dryad who lives in the pine trees Holly’s family grows as part of their livelihood. As the friends reconnect, Ivy not only shares her views on life, nature, and the modern world, but also gives Holly a magic charm that will change both their lives.

As the year progresses, things magically fall into place and a new figure is introduced into Holly’s life. Still, guilt lingers that maybe all the good developments aren’t deserved and aren’t even her own doing. Christmas not only brings surprises, but a choice.

EXCERPT:
The high chirp was perky sunlight through my window at six in the morning. I whirled and backpedaled, yelping when my foot collided with the blasted pinecone a second time. “Who’s there? Sammy?” I called, though why the neighbor’s kid would have hiked a quarter of a mile to see what I was up to on a school day didn’t make sense. My head moved sharply at the sound of a giggle that I couldn’t dismiss as the breeze.

I swallowed and tried again. “Rexy, is that you?” Sure it is, because he has motivation and dogs can talk now, my ever-helpful mind pointed out. In the seclusion, my thoughts were foggy with the scent of natural pine and distracted by the sticky residue that coated my feet the longer I walked.

“Nay, silly! ’Tis me!” Shuddering branches reached out and upward. In a scene from my fervid childhood dreams, the needles abruptly flattened and the branches extended like long, lithe arms.

I screamed, dropped my sneakers, and stumbled back into a tree, wincing at the sharp branch that jabbed me in the small of the back. I’ve lost it. I’ve well and truly lost it. They’ll find me out here foaming at the mouth and screaming that the trees are talking. My hands clamped over my mouth to spare myself a little dignity before I was committed.

“You don’t remember?” The voice quivered as the branch-arms drooped, their needles rustling in displeasure, or maybe disappointment. An eerily thin girl stepped out of the center of the pine. If Clara was a stylish waif, then this creature was a glass figurine. Her tunic was the color of deep, brown bark that bore the textured, grooved pattern of a tree trunk. It was even sticky with the needles’ gum. Her shoulder-length hair was bristle thin and pale yellow, though in certain angles they looked various shades of light green. She was impossibly slender and tall in a way that made her proportions look overextended, yet not grotesque. Her fingers and arms were longer than what they should have been, yet there was an elegance about them. The creature’s delicate, pale-green face screwed up in dismay and her large emerald green eyes stared down at me in disappointment. “Have you forgotten me that easily? Has it truly been so long?”

The city smog, the years spent trying to cram myself into one jean size smaller than what I could comfortably wear, the pep talks to always “work hard to get ahead,” the years of late nights spent studying and partying at college, and the painful awkwardness of my high school and junior high years dissipated in the heady, tantalizing scent of Christmas in the in-between of spring and summer.

“Ivy?” I whispered her name, because surely, surely, I had to be dreaming. My hoarse voice was no lie, though, and neither was the pain in my back, the on my skin, nor the fatigue in the rest of me.

It’s frightening how easy it is to discount some experiences as childish imaginings. It’s even more frightening when they reappear in front of your logical, grounded adult eyes as reality. Past and present me fused in a sharp, evergreen-scented bolt of recognition.

I’d been four or five when I’d stumbled upon the dryad during one of my all-day marathon adventures, back in the days when kids were allowed to play outside by themselves as long as they were home by supper. I was doomed to the fate of an only child living outside of town who liked stories featuring fantastic lands and thousands of characters. It was impossible on any given day to entertain myself when the only friends left to play an arch nemesis and a prince were the family dog and a cow we eventually sold.

I’d been playing at being lost in the woods while stalked by a troll when Ivy stepped out of her tree just as she did now, skipping elegantly and looking for a playmate. It took a few moments to understand that I wasn’t locked in my imagination, that the impossible creature in front of me was real. After that moment of surprise, I accepted her as fact and invited her to play. We defeated the evil troll king together and ruled our own country all in the span of an afternoon.

Her faerie name was something long and musical when she said it, but wasn’t a name a regular human could hope to pronounce. Maybe that had been purposeful and she’d been putting me on to avoid me ever having that kind of power over her. I’d always called her Ivy after the vines that climbed the trees and buildings in the fairy tale books I loved. Since her very existence was tied to the trees, it was fitting. Since it technically wasn’t her real name and allowed her to retain her autonomy while pursuing a friendship with a mortal, she was especially pleased.

She wasn’t supposed to exist, but it was easier to accept what was in front of me than accept that I’d had a nervous breakdown on top of everything else. Belief is surprisingly easy when you’re not given a choice.

Book Review: Stranger Things: Suspicious Minds by Gwenda Bond

Stranger Things: Suspicious Minds: The first official Stranger Things novel
by Gwenda Bond
February 5, 2019
Publisher: Del Rey
ASIN: B07DBQR8T1 ISBN: 9781984800886
A mysterious lab. A sinister scientist. A secret history. If you think you know the truth behind Eleven’s mother, prepare to have your mind turned Upside Down in this thrilling prequel to the hit show Stranger Things.

It’s the summer of 1969, and the shock of conflict reverberates through the youth of America, both at home and abroad. As a student at a quiet college campus in the heartland of Indiana, Terry Ives couldn’t be farther from the front lines of Vietnam or the incendiary protests in Washington.

But the world is changing, and Terry isn’t content to watch from the sidelines. When word gets around about an important government experiment in the small town of Hawkins, she signs on as a test subject for the project, code-named MKULTRA. Unmarked vans, a remote lab deep in the woods, mind-altering substances administered by tight-lipped researchers . . . and a mystery the young and restless Terry is determined to uncover.

But behind the walls of Hawkins National Laboratory—and the piercing gaze of its director, Dr. Martin Brenner—lurks a conspiracy greater than Terry could have ever imagined. To face it, she’ll need the help of her fellow test subjects, including one so mysterious the world doesn’t know she exists—a young girl with unexplainable superhuman powers and a number instead of a name: 008.

Amid the rising tensions of the new decade, Terry Ives and Martin Brenner have begun a different kind of war—one where the human mind is the battlefield.

There are four main characters in this book: Terry Ives (Eleven’s mother), Alice, Gloria, and Ken. Except for Alice, who is a local resident and works at her uncle’s garage as a mechanic, the other three go to college in Bloomington, Indiana. Important secondary characters are Terry’s boyfriend, Andrew (Eleven’s father), her sister, Becky, and college roommate, Stacey.

All four of the main characters are part of the MKUltra research, and subjected to terrible things by Dr. Brenner, all in the name of his trying to make super psychics and protentional weapons for the military (this is set in 1969, during the Vietnam War) As season one of the show has hinted, Dr. Brenner is researching the powers of the human mind and creating superpowered people - like Kali (Eight) and, eventually, Eleven. Gwenda Bond’s flesh-out references to the time (I suspect the title, Suspicious Minds, is based on the song by Elvis Presley that came out August 1969), and the Vietnam War are spot on, and the characters are well-rounded. After knowing Dr. Brenner's thoughts and motivations, makes me despise him all the more.

You don’t have to watch the TV show, Stranger Things, to enjoy this novel. Yes, there are a few references to the show with Eight (Kali) and Eleven, even the Upside Down and the monsters, but even those who have never seen the series can pick this up to read. The novel has a great mix of paranormal, late 60s/early 70s counter-culture history, government conspiracy, science fiction, and horror, to have something for everyone.

I gave Stranger Things: Suspicious Minds 5 sheep.

For the last twenty years, Cobalt has burned with a need of one female, a beautiful raven-haired cougar who captured his heart the moment he set eyes on her. His position as pride protector has been a blessing at past mating gatherings, keeping females away, but this time it feels like the worst of curses, because the female who has bewitched him so thoroughly is taking part for the first time and all he can do is watch as males battle for her.

As much as she hates the way her mother controls everything in her life, Ember is thankful for it as she constantly turns away suitors, unaware of the pain she’s sparing Ember from with every male she rejects. Every male who isn’t the gorgeous blond with darkness in his eyes and an easy smile she burns for with an intensity that scares her, awakens feelings in her that have her verging on doing something reckless. Damaged goods he might be, dangerous and unpredictable, but with every contest over her that pulls her closer to her doom, she grows more determined to follow her heart, no matter the consequences.

With every fight over the right to Ember, the tethers on Cobalt’s feelings twist and threaten to snap, a torment he cannot bear and one that has him willing to risk it all, because a single kiss would make even the harshest punishment worth it. He would die for one moment with her… his fated mate.

Guest Post: Would you go to Mars? (Mars Girls book tour) + giveaway

Would you go to Mars?
by Mary Turzillo

Hi. I’m a founding member of the Mars Society. I’ve always been interested in humanity’s exploration of the universe, and I want to ask a question you may not have every been asked before. Or maybe you have.

If offered a ride, would you go to Mars?
Let’s narrow this down I’m not talking about being cooped up in a tin can for nine months, landing in a desert, spending a couple years living basically in a space suit and doing experiments, then coming back to Earth in the same tin can.

I’m talking about a one-way trip. Not a death trip, although in the long run everybody dies (so far as we know). You would probably die on Mars, but only after a long and very interesting life as a Martian colonist.

Well, would you go?

Let me list some of the features of this possible life, pro and con.

You probably know the cons. Thin atmosphere, only 3% of Earth’s: not enough to sustain even a few minutes of life, so you’d be living inside a habitat with brief excursions outside in either an environment suit or a rover. You’d be absorbing cosmic rays that might damage your health. It’s really cold. Some places it might reach a temperature above the freezing temperature of water. But carbon dioxide freezes on Mars, so it’s COLD. You’d be far away from everybody on Earth, and conversations would feature a fo communicate with you as if by text or email, albeit with video features.

And it would be hard to get accepted to go to Mars. You’d have to be very healthy. Whatever organization provided the ride would be expecting returns on their investment, so likely they’d want engineers and scientists who would work hard to make scientific discoveries worth their hire.

My Mars Girls, in my upcoming Apex novel, were born on Mars. They had no choice. But still, it’s their home. They don’t want to leave.

So, I’d like to tell you the good stuff.

First off, you’d be famous. Because so few would be selected, you’d be like an astronaut. Heck, you’d be an aresnaut. Your activities would be fascinating to everybody on Earth. If you made even the smallest discovery (I’m not saying “signs of life,” but why the heck not?) your name would be emblazoned on every news website. You might have a crater or a fallen meteorite or some other weird new thing named after you.

So there’s for you glory hounds.

But what about everyday life?

As a guess, I think NASA or some sponsoring organization would pay for your health insurance forever. They would be watching how you adapt to the low gravity, the dryness, the corrosive peroxides that leak into your living space no matter how carefully they are excluded. Sophisticated miniaturized medical equipment would be among the very first payloads, so if you did get sick (and you and your fellow Martians were vetted to be very healthy), the best equipment would be available, along with advice from all the terrestrial medical experts on Earth. They would not skimp on treatment and care! After all, NASA, ESA, and/or other sponsoring organizations would be heavily invested in your well-being. Plus the eyes of the human race are on you. Your health insurance would cover EVERYTHING, and I bet somebody else would be paying the premiums.

It’s unlikely that the terrestrial viruses that cause colds, flu, and norovirus would get to Mars. Recent studies say such diseases can arise spontaneously from human transposons, but I suspect that the first fifty years of Martian occupation will find settlers relatively free of these nuisance diseases. And of course you would not need to fear the zika virus or other diseases spread by insects. Any insects that make it to Mars would be strictly those invited to pollinate greenhouse plants or provide information to researchers.

I mentioned those peroxides. How would you like to be a natural blonde with no trips to the beauty parlor?

What about your fellow Martians? I don’t know your stereotype of space travelers, but let me extrapolate from a few of the astronauts we know about. Chris Hadfield now has his own music career. Thanks to an agreement with Bowie’s publisher, Hadfield’s performance of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, recorded on the International Space Station, was available to view for two years. Another astronaut, Kjell Lindgren, played bagpipes on the ISS.

Music is a natural for people living in limited space. Here's a chart showing other sastronaut hobbies. https://github.com/gganssle/astroBio/blob/master/figs/hob.png
So you might miss your homeys, but you’ll have interesting new friends.

Incidentally, astronauts are vetted to be sure they have agreeable personalities as well as intellectual and mechanical brilliance. As the wife of a NASA scientist, I’ve met quite a few astronauts, and found them universally interesting, convivial, and kind. They enjoy sharing their adventure with others and they love to engage with space-fans. They readily agree to photographs and autographs. They are people-people.

Some astronauts like to cook, incidentally. So, they get clever even with limited ingredients. The experts running greenhouses on Mars will always be trying new crops, maybe exotic things not available back in your city’s supermarkets. Mars might be a paradise for vegetarians, but there will be some small food animals. I’m also reading reports of meat grown from stem-cells, which because of how it is designed would be healthier in nutritional profile and free of toxins, antibiotics, or parasites: (Washington Post, May 2, 2106).

Let’s talk about the climate some more. Mars has a long year, almost twice that of Earth. Since you’ll be spending most of your time indoors, that will hardly matter. Artificial light and heat will even out the seasons. But here’s something delicious for you if you are a late sleeper: Mars’ day cycle is 24 hours, 37 minutes, and some odd seconds. This means you can sleep late every single day!

And you’ve probably already thought about the gravity issue. It is a little more than a third that of Earth’s. Take your present weight and multiply it by 0.376, and there’s your Mars weight. I weigh 135 pounds (as of this morning), but on Mars, I would be able to jump off tables or maybe even tall rocks and not break my legs, because my weight would be just a little over fifty pounds! Without calorie-counting! How amazing is that? I realize that mass is conserved, but still, our ability to jump and run would be awesomely enhanced. Imagine new forms of Earthly sports on Mars: baseball, cricket, badminton, tennis could be played iin arenas inside habitats, or outside with players in environment suits.
As a fencer, I try to imagine how that sport would change. Running attacks or flèches would be spectacular. Foilists might jump several meters in the air in order to land a touch on an opponent, or to avoid getting touched. I wish somebody would make an anime about a champion fencer coming to Mars to compete in an Interplanetary Fencing Cup. Anybody reading this who does computer animation? Please? Fulfill my dream?

Now, here’s the best part of living on Mars. Scenery. No, you wouldn’t have pastoral meadows filled with wildflowers, or stately redwood forests. Instead, you would have amazing canyons and pinnacles, in all different shades of red and ochre.

And best of all, you would have the stars. Have you ever been to a remote location (Utah, Montana, Alberta, Saskatchewan, NamibRand Nature Reserve, Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve in New Zealand, etc.) where you could see more stars than are visible from even suburban or farming areas?

The view of the heavens from Mars will be beyond your expectations. Heavenly, literally. People will ride rovers in environment suits with warmed platforms so they can recline and enjoy the heavens. Or transparent domes will be erected so people can have star parties where they eat, drink, dance, and gape at the universe. They will see the colors of the stars, they will see nebulas, they will see the Milky Way.

The people of Mars will see the whole galaxy, the visible cosmos, and they will know that humanity has made another step toward exploring and populating the universe beyond Earth. You could be one of them—if you’re young enough, and if you really want it. I hope some of you do.

But here’s one drawback: I just don’t know that sheep will adapt to Mars. I love sheep, but they do need a lot of open pasture to graze. So maybe you’ll have to do with holographic sheep — or, better, this blog.

See you on Mars — in 2035, maybe.

She lives on her family’s Pharm with her parents, little sister, and a holo-cat named Fuzzbutt. The closest she gets to clubs are on the Marsnet. And her parents are pressuring her to sign her contract over to Utopia Limited Corp before she’s even had a chance to live a little. When Kapera—a friend from online school—shows up at her Pharm asking for help, Nanoannie is quick to jump in the rover and take off. Finally an adventure!

What Nanoannie and Kapera find at the Smythe’s Pharm is more than the girls bargained for. The hab has been trashed and there are dead bodies buried in the backyard! If that wasn’t bad enough, the girls crash the rover and Kapera gets kidnapped by Facers who claim her parents are murderers! Between Renegade Nuns, Facers, and corp geeks, Nanoannie and Kapera don’t know who to trust or where to go. Kapera only wants to find her parents so they can get to Earth Orbitals and she can be treated for her leukemia. Nanoannie wants to help her friend and experience a little bit of Mars before selling her contract to the first corp that offers to buy it.

Life isn’t easy when you’re just as a couple of Mars Girls.

Amanda Jones Guest Post: From the diary of Satan... (Dark Angel book tour) + giveaway

From the diary of Satan – Supreme Sheolic Overlord, Emperor of the 666 Legions, Source of all Evil.

Dear Diary

Today was a pretty average day – there were a few light tortures in the morning, followed by lunch with Famine, and a game of chess with War. Checked in on Death this afternoon – he has quite a lovely prisoner in his lair… haven’t seen Pestilence around today – he’s had a nasty bout of the flu – note to self – bring him a Tupperware of chicken soup.

This evening I spent a few hours chillin’ in my office with some music – still trying to master the N’Sync “Bye Bye Bye” puppet dance – I’d like to have it ready for the Sheolic talent contest – I know just which prisoners to string up next to me as props! There’s no business like show business!

Had the castle’s mage work a spell to enhance our WiFi signal. I plan to take over the Twitterverse by morning! Straight from Sheol into your homes via @theonetruesatan!!! I must remember to take some cute videos of my re-animated kitty Pookie Pie for upload…those humans love their cat videos.

My butler had our resident mage design me a new RPG game for my PS4! Can’t wait to decimate those dirty angels in the virtual world AND the real world.

I guess that’s all for now – I do have an underworld to run! ‘Til tomorrow dear diary!

Satan – slayer of real AND virtual angels, dancer extraordinaire!

P.S. I had my minions do the Harlem Shake – video got over 100 likes!!!

P.P.S. People seem to think my social media accounts are marketing ploys for some new movie release…what the Sheol!

A day in the life of an author with R.J. Blain (Playing With Fire book tour) + giveaway

A Day in the Life of an Author

While I’d like to claim that being an author is a glamorous career choice, but reality is a cruel mistress. On most days, one of my four cats wakes me up before my alarm goes off, convinced she will starve to death if she isn’t fed soon.

It is currently an hour and ten minutes before I should be awake. Today, the cat somehow managed to reduce my share of a bed to half of what it usually is. She weighs seven pounds. I’m still not certain how this happened.

She’s lucky she’s cute.

On the average day, I’m usually woken up a few minutes before my alarm goes off. I don’t have many hard routines, but getting up every morning to feed the cats and make the coffee pot give me coffee is mandatory to start the day. Without coffee, neither my husband nor I are happy campers.

After that, it’s a free for all. I do what needs done, and I try to get done all the necessities so I can get to my favorite part of the day, which involves writing or editing my latest book.

In a perfect day, I spend most of my time writing, getting lost in the next adventure I’m working on. Most of my days aren’t perfect. It seems life has a way of throwing sticks in the spokes. (if you’ve never gotten a stick in the spokes, I totally don’t recommend. I’ve wiped out on more bike trails than I care to think about thanks to stupid sticks in my spokes!)

When I started this blog post, I really thought talking about my day would be a lot more interesting than it actually is. That’s a bit disappointing. Then again, I think I prefer a day in my life than a day in the life of my characters.

They have it rough. When they’re having a good day, I’m not screwing around with them. I do a lot of screwing around with them. Sometimes, I think I write books just to discover how many fictional ways I can attempt to kill someone without succeeding. (And don’t get me started about my search results. I’m pretty sure the NSA has a file on me that says ‘crazed writer with pyromaniac tendencies.’

Hardly a day goes by without me searching for something strange on the internet. Yesterday, I did a bunch of searches relating to C4, how it is detonated, whether or not it can be detonated under water (yes,) and how close to a blast someone can be without dying.

Mythbusters has come in really useful for my novel-writing research. Their interest in ANFO and C4 has helped me better grasp explosives in so many different ways.

Every time I write a book, I’m always researching something new. While I often write things far outside the scope of reality, bending and breaking the rules with magic, I find I need to understand the rules before I can break them. Sometimes I scribble out ‘writer’ and exchange it with ‘researcher.’

It keeps me on my toes, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What do you get when you mix gorgons, an incubus, and the Calamity Queen? Trouble, and lots of it.

Working as the only human barista at a coffee shop catering to the magical is a tough gig on a good day. Bailey Gardener has few options. She can either keep spiking drinks with pixie dust to keep the locals happy, or spend the rest of her life cleaning up the world’s nastiest magical substances.

Unfortunately for her, Faery Fortunes is located in the heart of Manhattan Island, not far from where Police Chief Samuel Quinn works. If she’d been smart, she never would have agreed to help the man find his wife.

Bailey found her, all right—in the absolutely worst way possible.

One divorce and several years later, Bailey is once again entangled in Chief Quinn’s personal affairs, and he has good reason to hate her. Without her, he wouldn’t be Manhattan’s Most Wanted Bachelor, something he loathes. Without her, he’d still be married.

If only she’d said no when he asked her help, she might have had a chance with him. While her magic worked well, it came with a price: misfortune. Hers.

When Quinn’s former brother-in-law comes to her for help, he leaves her with a cell phone and seventy-five thousand reasons to put her magic to the test. However, when she discovers Quinn’s ex-wife is angling for revenge, Bailey’s tossed in the deep end along with her sexiest enemy.

Book Excerpt:
No one in their right mind would ever license me as a private investigator, but that didn't stop people from coming to me when they needed something found. Fortunately, I liked my job as the only human barista at Faery Fortunes Coffee and Book Shop. Most came for a cup of joe and left too buzzed to read a thing, but who was I to complain? People paid top dollar for their pixie dust infused latte, and they tipped me well not to judge them.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t so fond of Chief Quinn. When he walked through the door, bad things usually happened to someone—me. For him to come in five minutes after opening, long before the sun even thought about rising, he needed something, and it wasn’t a cup of coffee. Why couldn’t he want coffee? I could deal with making him a drink, and I’d double his dose of pixie dust to keep him happy.

I gave the espresso machine a defiant swipe of my cleaning cloth before stepping to the counter to deal with Manhattan’s Most Wanted Bachelor. Without my help, he’d still be married, too.

What a way to start the day.

And to think people wondered why I refused to help find anything for anyone anymore. The reason stood across the counter from me. Chief Samuel Quinn, aged thirty, hotter than sin, and my heaven and hell rolled together in one smoking tall, dark, and handsome package, hated me for good reason. It was his fault, too. He had been the one to ask me for help finding his wife. I had found her all right, right in the middle of teaching a college stud the nuances of the reverse cowgirl.

If no one asked me to find something or someone again for the rest of my life, I’d be a very happy woman.

“Chief Quinn, what a pleasant surprise,” I lied. “Can I get you something? A dark roast, cream, no sugar, light on the dust?”

Why couldn’t I have been blessed with forgetfulness? I knew my worst nightmare’s favorite drink, and I had to make it for him first thing in the morning. Of course I knew it. He came in at least three times a week to torment me. Screw it. Who was I kidding? Instead of the coffee, he could take me instead. If I had to put up with the hassle of dealing with him, why couldn’t I enjoy it, too?

“Cream, no dust, and make it a large, Bailey.”

Alarm bells tinkled in my head. Since when did Chief Quinn address me by my first name? On a good day, he snapped my last name like he worried it would contaminate him. “Of course, sir.”

The faster I made his coffee, the sooner he’d go away. I’d love every second I spent watching him go. In less than a minute, I had his drink ready, and to lower the risk of him spending any extra time with me, I chirped, “It’s on me today, Chief Quinn. Have yourself a nice morning.”

If it meant we parted without incident, it’d be well worth the five bucks.

He saluted me with his cup, flashed a hint of a smile, and walked out the door. Facing him was hell, but I glimpsed the heavens when he left, and if my panties hadn’t caught on fire under my jeans, I’d be very, very surprised.

“You’re drooling, Gardener,” my boss squeaked. The moth fairy, with just enough pixie heritage to dust glitter when she wanted, fluttered over my shoulder, her tiny arms crossed over her chest. “Reverse cowgirl.”

“Stop reminding me!” I wailed, slumping over the counter. “He hates me. Worse, all I think about when he struts in is taking off my clothes and giving him my panties. I think they caught on fire this time, Mary. Why couldn’t he have had one of his cops find his wife instead?”

“You just want to indulge in some guilt-free fantasizing like every other hot-blooded American woman in the city.”

“Exactly. This is why no one in their right mind asks me for help. I ruin everything.”

“Except my coffee, which is a miracle. Now that we’ve had our daily dose of excitement, can you handle the shop on your own for an hour? We’ll call it even on the coffee.”

Was she serious? Alone for an hour on a Monday morning forty minutes before rush hour? If she thought I’d be all right alone, she was completely cracked. I could already hear her if I dared to complain about my shift. What could possibly go wrong in an hour? Didn’t I like my job? The list went on and on and on. I smiled so I wouldn’t cry. “Sure, Mary. I can last an hour.”

“You’ve gotten better at lying. Your smile didn’t even slip that time. Try not to die while I’m gone. Good humans are so hard to find.” Mary zipped out of the shop through the pixie door and dove through the window of an idling sports car.

Wait.

Sports car? Red, convertible, top up despite the nice summer morning? I leaned over the counter and squinted. Yep. My boss had just ditched me for a ride in Chief Quinn’s car. Sometimes life really wasn’t fair.
