Went to see The Predator with my husband and 17-year-old daughter (she was the control since she's never seen any of the previous Predator movies—I know, parenting fail). The Predator has gotten a lot bad reviews, but come on it's The Predator! All three of us enjoyed the flock out of the movie.

Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of things so wrong with it, but that made it so right. There are a lot of references to the original movie and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Including this gem...

Yes! They used this line. I won't spoil how but it was pretty clever.

The movie is just as if not gorier than the other Predator movies with lots of action and stupid humor that we laughed at in spite of.

The biggest failing was the representation of an autistic child. He was a major plot device but the autism only presented itself when convenient. They aren't disrespectful of autism, just unrealistic. But so is the Predator having hunting dogs...which they do!

Bottom line, it is exactly what you think it will be and if you love that kind of thing, go see it.

I come to, groaning as several of my senses are assaulted at once. A putrid, decaying smell tickles my nostrils, and I’d probably puke if I was human and capable of vomiting. Moans, cries, and screams filter into the room from somewhere outside. Shivers tiptoe up my spine as a blast of cold air sweeps over me, and my arms ache like a bitch. A dull pounding in my head and pain burning at the back of my eyes make seeing difficult, but I push through my discomfort, forcing myself back to consciousness.

Slowly, my vision clears, and my surroundings come into focus.

“Mad Dog and Beck are still unconscious,” Dane says into my mind.

“Where are we, and how the fuck did we get here?” The last thing I remember is being ambushed by Alandra and a bunch of goons outside Kylie’s house. I put up the mother of all fights, but I was outnumbered, and they had the element of surprise. It’s embarrassing how easily they overpowered me after that.

My head spins around, my eyes scanning the small cell. The walls are exposed stone, and the floors are coarse black slate. It’s dirty, cold, and unforgiving under my butt. There is little natural light in the room, the only glimmer of brightness trickling in through a small, open window above my head.

Beck, Maddox, and Dane are all stripped to their boxers, arms elevated, and wrists bound together, chained to the stone wall. I look down at myself, confirming I’m in the same predicament. “Where’s Alinthia?” The connection that bonds my brothers and I to our girl thrashes anxiously about, trying and failing to locate our missing piece. “Where is she, Dane?”

“It’s not good, Coop, and it’s all my fault.”

After crash-landing on an alien planet, the Robinson family fight against all odds to survive and escape, but they're surrounded by hidden dangers.

The first episode of the Lost in Space remake hooked me. The writers took some of the basic premises from the original but created something new with nods to the original. The new series is full of action (almost too much) and lots of suspense.

My favorite change is in the robot. Whoa, it is creepy! It has its own backstory that is covered in the first episode. What I don't understand is how Will can communicate with it but no one else can. It imprinted on Will like a baby duck. Maybe there will be more answers later in the series.

The Robinson family dynamic is much different from the original. Episode one starts off with the crash landing of the Jupiter. Scenes alternate between the present and flashbacks to catch you up on how they ended up on the alien planet. Another great change is with Dr. Z. Smith. In the original series, he was a plant to sabotage the mission. The new Dr. Smith is a woman with a different backstory. We only get a few glimpses of who she is, but one thing is very clear, she is dangerous.

The opening scene is fantastic. Caught me off guard. Once they crash everything goes wrong. The odds of that many near-death experiences happening? Kind of pushing it even for a sci-fi show. 

I've seen the first two episodes and plan to continue watching. This one is worth a look if you like sci-fi.

I just LOVE being able to review older books from a new-to-me author! Atrophy and Quantum are two exceptional examples of how to grab a sci-fi newbie’s attention and hold it.

REVIEW

Atrophy tells the story of wrongly imprisoned Tannin Everett who has spent twelve years on the prison planet Erebus when a ship in need of emergency repairs lands on the planet and Tannin decides to escape with the help of the captain’s sister Zahli Sherron. As tempting as the two find one another they have more important things to think about, like how no one escapes Erebus alive and how Zahli’s brother, the infamous war hero/crazy captain is going to take having a convict on his ship. Heck, the entire crew is nuts but they’re lovable nuts.

I just LOVE the way Anastasi builds this multi-dimensional universe with such diverse characters but at the same time makes it easy for a newbie like me to navigate and get into. The pace was perfect for a sci-fi adventure, brisk but easy to follow and with plenty of action! Tannin and Zahli were a good couple though I found myself wishing that Zahli had more of a backbone, especially when it came to her brother Rian.

Speaking of Rian, can you say scene stealer? I mean he’s just one of those characters that walks onto a scene like he OWNS it. He’s a little nuts, and a lot of mystery. I was really intrigued by him. I’m hoping he gets his own story soon because he and Ella have a lot of unsolved tension going on!

REVIEW

Quantum takes Zander Graydon and Mae Petros on as the main couple but I’ve quickly learned that Jess Anastasi doesn’t do things on a small scale. Zander and Mae’s relationship is just the tip of the iceberg in these stories because there’s always a bigger conflict, a bigger goal, and then there’s all the action scenes. You can’t have a sci-fi ANYTHING without action scenes and this book excelled at that.

Again, the couple shares page time with a bigger storyline and multiple characters and that usually bothers me but with Anastasi building such an addictive plot, it’s hard to be bothered by anything about this book. I love the recurring characters but my favorite has to be Rian. He’s just so much fun even when he’s obnoxious. I’m really hoping his story comes out soon. I want to know what makes this guy tick!
