World-famous Egyptologist Dr. Winston Thornsley died suddenly two months ago in disgrace. His widow, Ida Thornsley, remains convinced her husband was falsely accused of stealing an ancient burial urn he discovered in Egypt last summer, but local and federal law enforcement officers are stumped.

Mrs. Thornsley, desperate for answers, calls in her thirteen-year-old neighbors, the Botanic Hill Detectives—twins Lanny and Lexi Wyatt, Moki Kalani, and Rani Kumar. Their exciting mission? To find the urn and its real thief, bring the criminal to justice, and exonerate Dr. Thornsley so his spotless reputation can be restored.

A roomful of venomous snakes, the poisoned Egyptian pond, and Dragon Pit Man are just a few of the tests awaiting the four tech-savvy teenagers. As the detectives begin to unravel the sinister plot, the mystery takes a dangerous turn. Answers are at their fingertips—if they can only convince their parents to let them solve the case.

Uncle Rocky did his best to join the kids on the floor but resorted to an old, overstuffed club chair instead. No sooner had the man gotten settled when Rani’s face changed. “What’s that?” she said. Flashing lights were beaming into the attic through the little window and dancing wildly around the room. The group quickly clustered around the opening. Lanny grabbed the binoculars hanging nearby and trained them on the source. It took some time before the light show stopped interfering with his vision. “It’s Mask Face! On the Quince Street Footbridge!” he shouted, lowering the binoculars. Lexi yanked them from her brother, taking his neck along with the strap, and aimed them out the window. “You’re right. Eww! It’s creepy,” she replied as goosebumps ran down her arms. The figure had turned the flashlight onto its mask, creating the illusion of a disembodied head floating across the bridge.

Sherrill Joseph’s debut novel, Nutmeg Street: Egyptian Secrets, had been inside her head for decades. The mystery genre took hold of her as a fifth grader when she discovered Nancy Drew and Phyllis A. Whitney mysteries. Years later, it still hasn’t let go. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a master’s in education, Sherrill spent the next thirty-five years as a K-12 literacy teacher. When she retired from teaching in 2013, the Botanic Hill Detectives and their mysteries finally sprang to life. Forever inspired by her beautiful students in the San Diego public schools, the author has peopled and themed the Botanic Hill Detectives mysteries with children of various abilities, cultures, and interests. She strongly believes that embracing diversity is the key to a better world. Sherrill is a native San Diegan where she lives in a ninety-year-old house in a historic neighborhood with her bichon frisé-poodle mix, Jimmy Lambchop. UF author Ruth Spencer: What Inspired me to Write? + giveaway

What inspired me to write?

I was late getting into the vampire genre, horror films-especially vampire films scared me half to death. In my early twenties, I was too scared to watch the Terminator and Robocop films. I was a total wimp!

I met Simon, my husband in my mid-twenties and he loved horror films; he encouraged me to watch them. It was okay, he would protect me from all things supernatural that might escape from the TV to attack me! I started to watch vampire films, they made me feel nervous and my heart would race. Strangely, I really got to liking that feeling and watched more and more vampire films.

From a young age I have been a passionate reader and in my mind I knew I would write a book one day. And as I read books about vampires and watched just about every vampire film going, the idea for my book started to take shape in my mind. In all the books I have read and films I have watched, vampires were always the creatures of myth and legend. I began to think, 'what if vampires are the dominant species, while humans are creatures of myth and legend?'

My vampires live a very claustrophobic life indoors and they are quite removed from where their food comes from. This idea really came from today's children. When I was little, it was punishment to be sent to my room, nowadays it seems its punishment for children to be sent outside to play, they spend so much time in their rooms. I also read an article in the paper that some children couldn't identify with certain vegetables and when asked where they came from, their answer was 'the supermarket.

Excerpt:
Oh my goodness, Christophe, the Taylors are loading up a hire van as well, that’s three of our neighbours moving away.’

‘What do you want me to say, Audrey? Please step away from the windows, I don’t want them to see you watching them, it’s rude.’

Audrey skulked off into the kitchen and grabbed the telephone and as she closed the door she dialled Emma’s number.

A nervous voice answered after a couple of rings, ‘Hello.’

‘Emma, it’s me, are you OK?’

‘I’m frightened, Audrey. I haven’t had any bloods for two nights and I’m too scared to go out and see if I can get some. Vampire were fighting close to my apartment earlier and not long ago I heard Expoforce soldiers shouting orders from loud-hailers, they were trying to quell the violence. I shut my blackout curtains when the trouble started and risked a peek a minute ago. The trouble appears to have stopped; there isn’t a soul in sight now. I think the perpetrators must have been arrested.’

Ruth lives in Rothley, Leicestershire, England with her space obsessed husband Simon and her black cat Violet, who just wants a warm knee. She found her love of books at a young age and remembers the smell of the old library on her monthly visits with her mum. Together they would bring home books of many different genres and Ruth quickly moved from reading teen novels to digesting adult books.

Ruth was always afraid of horror films, she remembers the time her mum bought her The Thing to watch, thinking it a nice science fiction film. Ruth was terrified and her feelings for horror films remained until her mid twenties, when, suddenly she began to appreciate horror films and began reading Urban Fantasy books. Vampire films quickly became a favourite and the idea for her debut novel slowly began to take place.

Currently Ruth is writing the sequel to Origin of the Vampire and when she isn't writing and promoting her book she loves to relax by drawing portraits. The great outdoors is a big passion and holidays in The Lake District and by the sea in Cornwall and Dorset give Ruth great inspiration. But it was walking in the woods close to home where Ruth had her eureka moment and worked out the final piece of the puzzle for her debut novel. Walking in the countryside near home remains a weekly ritual, and of course coffee and cake is essential before returning home.

823 pages
Ten paranormal tales and one page-turning supernatural academy story in this spinoff from the award-winning Havenwood Falls universe.
The brand new Sun & Moon Academy College of Supernatural Guardians is an elite training program for a covert army that protects the supernatural community around the world. After a series of grueling trials to test their worthiness, only the top tier of applicants are admitted to the hidden college under the mountain.

We are ten of those students.

We’re a powerful mix of shifters, witches, vampires, demigods, angels, and more, making SMA no ordinary university. Throw in classes about healing potions, inter-dimensional exploration, and combat training, and college life here is a bit . . . well, unusual. But we still must juggle studying, obnoxious roommates, and killer parties. And, of course, we always make room for romance. How can we not? No other place in the world teems with such a sexy fusion of brains and badassery.

But classes haven’t even begun when our campus is terrorized, and the dangers continue throughout the semester—a hacker who threatens to publicly expose our school, a string of vampire attacks, invisible beasts with deadly bites, cursed classrooms that devour those who dare enter . . . What the hell kind of place is this, anyway?

For some reason that not even the Board of Regents has been able to figure out, it’s up to the ten of us to defeat these monsters and mayhem—before the sands in the big courtyard hourglass run out. Yep, we’re being timed, and the bodies are dropping almost as fast as the crystals. If any of us fail, this first semester of SMA just might be the last one ever.

In this unique anthology of over 750 pages, you not only get ten paranormal fantasy novellas, but one sweeping story that will have you flipping pages until the end.
