Book Review: The Council (Darkness Series Book 5) by K.F. Breene

The Council (Darkness Series Book 5)

With Sasha as the proclaimed Mage of high ranking power, she can't just slip under the carpet to a peaceful existence. Instead, she must present herself to the Council, a group of white mages who reside over the magical community, governing Stefan's people. There she must prove she has what it takes to be the mage of Stefan's clan, not something easily done.

Stefan, too, has been noticed by the large faction of rulers. An alpha leader with a firm hold over his people, he has outgrown in his position, and it shows. Ties to a human mage with a vast well of power, though, has made him a target. Sasha is sought after, and those who want to harness her power will take her by force if necessary.

With Dominicous' and Toa's help, Sasha and Stefan must face the trials coming up. Proving themselves is the easy part. Getting out with their lives becomes the challenge.

As much as Sasha has accepted her title of Mage she would just like to hide but instead, she must present herself to the Council. The Council is made up of white mages who rule over the magical community including Stefan’s clan. She must prove that she has the skill and power to be the mage of his clan which will be no easy feat. Stefan and his close circle of people have concerns about the visit to the Council since Sasha will be sought after by many because of her power as a black mage which is rare. The people on the Council are not known for playing by the actual rules and Sasha is as nervous as Stefan is about the upcoming trip.

Sasha, as a human has a unique look on others that Stefan and his people do not which is that many different types of people; humans, witches, shifters, etc. can work together to fight against the evil that keeps rearing its ugly head. This outlook may affect Sasha’s ability to be accepted by Stefan’s clan, but she never lets it ruin her love for Stefan. The strong connection that Fate has woven between Stefan and Sasha is stronger than ever in book 5 of Breene’s Darkness series.

It’s been a long road, but Sasha has finally claimed her role as the least knowledge mage in history. She’s also acquired a new, incredibly grumpy bodyguard, and a spunky new BFF. With her team by her side, she learns the ropes of this new profession.

Her experience level is about to be fast-tracked, however.

On a routine trip to check out a perimeter breach, she encounters a hideous demon called by an experienced magic worker. It is this terrifying discovery that unlocks a deeper problem: Stefan’s troubled past and the reason he gravely mistrusts the Mata.

While Sasha struggles to fight the physical demons, Stefan struggles to fight the demons of his past. If he fails, his future in Sasha will be lost.

Sasha is now the mage of the clan and is struggling to learn all the ins and outs of her new title. The team heads out to check on a perimeter breach, Sasha finds herself face to face with a horrible demon who was summoned by an experienced magic worker. The breach demands that the clan works with the Mata to try to solve this problem, but Stefan and the clan are less than willing to put their faith in the Mata who in the past have run away at the first sign of danger.

Sasha is unlike any mage the clan has ever encountered before. Not only is she human but she is a level black which was thought to just be a myth until now. Toa is working diligently with her trying to help her understand how the magic works and what she needs to do to be in control but so far everything she tries seems to backfire. Sasha has a funny personality that helps lighten the atmosphere of those around her which are all warriors.

Life for Sasha isn’t getting easier. She has survived run-in’s with monstrous Dulcha, lived through an abduction, and even made it past Charles’ constant badgering for sex. But if she thought the hurdles of this new life were behind her, she was dead wrong.

When the Regional comes to visit Stefan’s clan, the pressure increases. Sasha finds herself on a giant scale, assessed for her magic and held in the balance. If she doesn’t have the magic Stefan hopes, she could find herself on the street while still in grave danger. Even with a favorable outcome, however, her inability to use her magic presents a road block not easily crossed.

No, life is not getting easier.

Stefan feels the heat, too. He must finally declare a mate, and admitting his desire for a human is the worst form of taboo. He could jeopardize not only his place as leader but his and Sasha’s lives. His decision is like walking on a razor’s edge.

It is time to see if Sasha truly has the highest level of magic and to see if Stefan can convince the Regional that she is mate material. The Regional and his white mage will test Sasha’s levels of magic to see if her magic truly is the highest level of magic that is said to be a myth. Sasha is extremely nervous about the meeting and testing because if she doesn’t receive their approval, she will be cast out of the only home she knows.

Sasha is a complex character that is relatable and somewhat of an underdog. She wants to succeed but has little confidence in herself, which constantly gets in her way. She is the type of person you want to root for no matter the challenge and she is constantly surprising everyone around her.

Sasha has always known she was different, but now she also knows that the shadow men she’s seen all her life, are real.

With a life goal of fitting in, Sasha hopes her strange abilities will finally make true friendship a possibility. Unfortunately, her magic doesn’t function like everyone else’s. What she thought would make her belong, sets her apart now more than ever.

Stefan, all but promised to a different woman, has tried to keep his mind on his duties instead of the irresistible and free-spirited human. But when she is threatened, he can’t keep his distance any longer. He realizes he’ll stop at nothing to keep her safe, and more importantly, make her his.

Just when one thing clicks into place, another spirals out of control. Stefan’s clan isn’t the only group that would benefit from an extremely rare type of magic. And their enemies will stop at nothing to get what they want.
Sasha has always wanted to fit in with others but with her strange abilities she has always fallen short but now that she has to stay at the mansion to learn her abilities and train to use them, she is beyond excited that she will be able to make actual friends. What she didn’t count on was that she would still be viewed as different since she was only a human.

Stefan is the head of his clan and has a few months to choose a mate. Up until Sasha came into his life, he had been putting it off and was going to settle with Darla, since she is the closest female power level to him.

Sasha and Stefan are electric together pushing their passion higher than either of them thought possible. Once Stefan lays a claim on Sasha, even Charles her bodyguard is afraid to look at her wrong.

The First Book in the USA Today Bestselling Series

Sasha has been different her whole life. She sees things in the shadows that no one else can see. But it isn't until a mishap on the wrong side of town that she meets him.

The Boss.

A powerful, primal being that enforces his own set of rules. Scorching hot and wickedly deadly, he takes what he wants. And he wants her.

As a new world unfolds around her, Sasha discovers that not all secrets stick to the shadows. The Boss has brought out a magic in her that is centuries lost, and greatly needed.

Her struggle isn't just to stay alive. It's also against her desire to flirt with danger.

***Warning: 18+ for graphic sexual situations and darker themes. Read the reviews. This book might not be for you. The "vampires" do not follow societal rules or have any love for humans. It shows. While that will be addressed and their culture changed in later books, be prepared for the ride.

Sasha has always been able to see things
hiding in the shadows that other people don’t. She usually keeps it to herself, so she doesn’t end up in the loony bin but when trouble starts following her, she wants to know why.

Sasha and Stefan are both drawn to each other in ways that neither of them understands. Stefan is in charge of his territory and doesn’t have time to bother with a human but every time he turns around Sasha is there, doing unbelievable things that draw him closer to her. Even though Sasha has a boyfriend, she finds herself thinking of Stefan and wanting to be with him.

This book has some very graphic sexual situations and dark situations so if that isn’t your thing then this is not the series for you. If that doesn’t bother you then this is a good series. It has monsters, myths, trouble, and sex which makes a good combination.

Book Review: Shadowspell Academy (The Culling Trials Book 3) by Shannon Mayer & K.F. Breene

You Don’t Choose The Academy. The Academy Chooses You.

The last of the Culling Trials is here. I foolishly thought I’d survived the worst.

My team is falling to pieces around me and my heart is shattered for the losses I’ve endured. But I can’t stop when I’m so close to the end. There are too many people depending on me.

I foolishly thought there wasn’t much more I could lose…until the nature of my bloodline comes to light.

I’m not what I thought I was. Not what anyone thought I was.
But to tell people the truth would be to kill us all.

To fail the trials will mean death, but to succeed might damn me for life.

The end of the Culling Trials is finally here and Wild thought her crew had survived the worst of it but she was wrong. Her team is falling apart and her is being broken into a million pieces by the losses that keep stacking up around her. Each trial has brought out another part of her that surprises everyone around her and if she can stay alive maybe she will be able to find out more about who she is and where she comes from.

There are five houses in the magical world and it’s rare for a person to have more than one talent and people are definitely not meant to work together but Wild surprises everyone with the connection her team has built with one another. This connection makes them stronger than any other group or individual and is what keeps them going even when they are their lowest point. This strength is one of the aspects that has made this book such a joy to read. It is full of surprises making it hard to put it down until the end.

You Don’t Choose The Academy. The Academy Chooses You.

Being accepted into an elite school of magic, monsters, and assassins was not my idea of higher education. But here I am, fighting my way through the Culling Trials to claim my right to be taught.

As if the gauntlet-type physical and mental tests aren’t enough, people are going missing.

People that are my friends.

In a dangerous world where no one is as they seem, the golden rule is simple: Trust no one. They think we should just look out for ourselves. That we should leave the fallen behind and ask no questions.

They clearly think we’re idiots. I got this far by trusting my instincts, and I’m not going to back down now.

Those kids won’t be left to die.

Not on my watch.

Shadowspell Academy Book 1 and Shadowspell Academy Book 2 end with a cliffhanger

Wild has stepped into the place of her brother at the Culling Trials and is doing whatever is necessary to hide the truth that she isn’t Billy. The trouble with secrets is that they are hard to keep and the kids at these trials will use whatever they can to find a way to win. When kids start to go missing, Wild is determined to find out why, but she is unsure who she can trust but she wants to save them no matter what.

This is series is enticing which makes it a quick read. Full of magic, treachery and greed it has all the components of a great series. There are five trials in all each seemingly deadlier than the last but Wild team of ragtag misfits are bound and determined to work together to get through them in one piece, even Ethan who has no choice at this point.

You Don’t Choose The Academy. The Academy Chooses You.

I had no idea how those words would change my life. Or how they’d changed my life already…

Until the day the most dangerous man I’ve ever met waltzed onto my farm and left us a death sentence.

In an invitation.

My younger brother has been chosen for the prestigious, secret magical school hidden within the folds of our mundane world. A place so dangerous, they don’t guarantee you’ll make it out alive.

If he doesn't go our entire family will be killed.

It’s the same invitation my older brother received three years ago—the same place he mysteriously died.

The academy has already killed one sibling. I’ll be damned if they take another.

I do the only thing an older sister can: chop off my hair, strap on two bras to flatten the girls, and take my brother’s place.

Magic and monsters are real. Assassins are coming for me, and the dead are prone to rise. What’s a girl faking it as a boy supposed to do? That’s right—beat the academy at its own game.

Or die trying.

Wild was shocked when a strange man showed up at her farm with an envelope for her younger brother, one eerily similar to the one that her older brother had received and who had died at this school. Determined not to let her younger brother die too, Wild sets out to become a boy and save her family from more tragedy.

This is a definite binge read book, so be prepared to read from cover to cover! The characters each brought something special to the story that made you want to know each of them better. A weird bunch of misfits each with their own gifts; shapeshifter, necromancer, seer, vampire, goblin and warlock each trial will show off their skills. If you are looking for your next new series this is one you don’t want to miss.

Sexy covers aside, face it they are hot, this PNR series continues to be one of my top favs. It has everything you could want and adds new elements you didn't even know to crave. It's, in one word, astounding.

I will continue to gripe about the short length of these books. Each one is under 200 pages and that my friends should be a crime! You can't tease us with some much awesomeness and then cut us off cold turkey! I need time to come down from my reading high, and when you gip me of at least 200 pages....I want to break stuff!

Yeah, ok I am nuts for these books. But that's a wonderful thing!

To be fully invested in a saga, we readers live and breath for this stuff. And this sensational author delivers again and again.

If you've wanted to read this series, get on it right now. Every new edition adds to the overall wonder of the world that's been created. The main characters continue to grow with each other and as indiviulas. No one overshadows the other and our strong woman remains just that.

She's everything I could want and need in a gal and her anchor Stefan just keeps the flames of lust and alpha hotness burning till the sheep come home!

I'm addicted to this adventure in the world that's been laid before me and I can't wait for the next story!

Alpha Male Diner: Vampire by K.F. Breene (Darkness series) + giveaway

Stefan "The Boss" (vampire)
recipe by K. F. Breene
Into the Darkness (Darkness #1)

Ingredients
· Six-and-a-half feet of unyielding muscle
· Raw power tempered with deadly grace
· Onyx eyes that catch and throw the light
· Shadows clinging to a cut and defined body
· Equal parts possessiveness and protectiveness
· An alpha male
· A sprinkle of arrogance

Blend ingredients until a superior race forms who stalks the night. Add leather, a sword, magic, and glowing tattoos. When perfect, set to boil until your panties melt off.

Taste Test
As I met his black eyes, his puzzled expression deepened. “You’re human…”

“We established that, yes. What I want to know is, if I am human, what does that make you? And why do I notice you when others usually don’t?”

His head cocked to the side. His easy balance, his lethal edge; he was like a blade resting on billowing silk. “Very few humans are able to withstand our pheromones. Fewer still to break a Kolma once it has been placed. You’ve not been trained, that’s obvious; so how is this possible when you’re definitely human? Do you possess the blood of another species?”

I could barely think past the pounding ache of my body, begging to touch him. I needed to get a grip! He was revealing some very interesting factoids I needed to jot down in my mental notebook.

His nostrils flared. “Charles was right; your arousal is a unique scent. Like a spicy, warm drink on a mid-winter’s night. It rises above other smells, entrancing the mind.”

“Umm,” charged with questions, determination, anger, and demands, I thrust forward, “Listen, what did you mean about withstanding the…pher-thing? Or breaking the other thing? How can you trap someone’s head with pleasure? Because I’m pretty sure—not positive, but pretty sure—that Jared is straight. And also, I really think we should circle back to what the hell you are, and why nobody knows that you exist? Because this whole people scattering thing is not normal, and I think an explanation is probably in order.”

He stepped closer, not hearing me, or not caring that I spoke. His eyes looked at me like I was a life-sized riddle. They delved, searching. He took another step, forcing me to retreat two steps to keep distance between our bodies. Another step back had my back to the wall.

A small smile curved his lips. “I exude pleasure, you run. I exude fear, you come calling. You want me, I can smell it. I can feel it, almost like a palpable thing. Give in to it. Yield to me.”

Oh God I wanted to. His body was mere inches from mine, his intense eyes looking down into my soul from a face out of a Renaissance painting. The power of him, the sheer strength, had strange, primal fantasies running amok through my head. My core tingled, my chest surged, and my nipples were so hard they could cut this stone wall.

Why had I come here, again?
