Book Review: Voices From Beyond (A Ghost Finders Novel) by Simon R Green

Voices from Beyond (Ghost Finders #5)
by Simon R. Green
Paperback, 304 pages
August 26th 2014 by Ace

Meet the operatives of the Carnacki Institute—JC Chance: the team leader, brave, charming, and almost unbearably arrogant; Melody Chambers: the science geek who keeps the antisupernatural equipment running; and Happy Jack Palmer: the terminally gloomy telepath. Their mission: Do Something About Ghosts. Lay them to rest, send them packing, or just kick their nasty ectoplasmic arses…

In a quiet London suburb, four university students participating in an experiment inside a reputed haunted house hold a séance that goes terribly wrong. What—or who—ever they summoned has taken their minds away, leaving them empty shells.

Enter the Ghost Finders, ready to confront an enraged poltergeist for the students’ very souls.

All in a day’s work—except the team doesn’t know that in another part of the city, a different entity has also breached the threshold between worlds. And this time what is at stake is not four lives—but the very existence of all humanity.

JC Chance the team leader, Melody Chambers the computer science geek and Happy Jack Palmer the telepath who is not really happy, call themselves the Ghost Finders. The Ghost Finders work for the Carmacki Institute which deals with the paranormal. Their mission is to take down the bad ghosts, the ones that cause all sorts of trouble. When the Ghost Finders arrived at their next mission they found four University students sitting around a coffee table who apparently were in a middle of a séance gone bad. Upon further examination the Ghost Finders realize the students to have lost their minds...literally. Their bodies were empty soulless shells. To save the student's souls they had to go into the alternative world, the same world that took the students souls, to bring them back. Little did they know that this was the start to something bigger much bigger.

The world building was very creative, I felt a part of it. I think Melody the computer science geek,
always fiddling with her equipment, was my favorite. I loved the idea of the students using the Ouija board. What better way to open the doors to the other side, right. It definitely took me back to my early teenage years with my friends sitting around a Ouija board waiting for something to happen. We eventually got bored of it. I kind of felt the same way with the book. It was very well written and the characters were likable but it did lose my interest at some points. Not that the book was predictable. It was far from it in fact, but it lacked that punch you get when you can’t wait to turn to the next page. The scared/happy/
unsure emotions mixed into one; anticipation of what you are going to find next. As for Romance it was there, the characters had relationships but I would not use the word “Romance” but you could see them building throughout.

All in all it is a good light read, if you can call bad ghosts that take away your soul light.

Sheep Book Review: Night's Honor by Thea Harrison

Night's Honor
A Novel of the Elder Races book 7
By: Thea Harrison
Paranormal Romance
304 Pages

Plot:
On the run from her former employer, Tess knows that she’s vulnerable on her own amongst the Elder Races. That’s why she decides to audition to become the human attendant of a powerful Vampyre of the Nightkind demesne. But while her position affords her the safety she seeks, her protector turns out to be more than she bargained for.

The right-hand man of the Nightkind King, Xavier del Torro is both terrifying and alluring. While his true nature frightens Tess, she can’t ignore the appeal of his innate sense of integrity and self-restraint. Thrown into Xavier’s world, Tess must quickly learn to navigate the dangers—both to her life and to her heart. But the biggest threat comes from her own past…

I've been reading Thea Harrison books for a while now and not much in the paranormal world is as well written as her Elder Series. However, this latest installment left me wanting a little more bite to my PNR and whole lot more action.

Set to the pace of the San Francisco Bay Area backdrop, I loved the concept of using two characters who may normally be overlooked. A plain kinda average gal without the usually tall and kickass frame, paired up with a male of normal stature on the slender side. It was both refreshing and unexpected, yet equally appreciated!

I truly believe more stories should have this element of reality. We can't all be A-list body types, and that includes me! But, we can all read about being heros in stories and living that fantasy through the pages.

While the story itself lacked that normal kapow-punch I've come to associated with Thea stories, it was rounded out by an interesting concept. I had yet to realize the amount of time and dedication one must give over to a vampyre protector. This concept of wanting to become one of the household was eye opening. The pledge taken by both sides in this situation, encompassing the good and the bad.

Tess and Xavier have a soft burning kind of interaction going on. The back and fourth play was not as steamy as you may read about in other romances, but rather was tender and kind. Don't let that kindness be fooled for weakness though! Xavier is a deadly vamp and not to be messed with, some folks though have to find that out the hard way!

Overall, I liked this instatement in the series. While it was not what I would have expected, it was nice to see a whole new side to this saga and writing style for the author.

Exclusive Cover Reveal:Funeral Pallor (Valerie Stevens, #2) by Sean Cummings

Funeral Pallor (Valerie Stevens, #2)
by Sean Cummings

There's a nest of rotting husks in an old Calgary warehouse and they've got a hankering for human flesh, but that's the least of Valerie Stevens' problems. While necromancers are a dime a dozen, these mindless killing machines all share one thing in common: they're former occupants of every funeral home in the city.

The evidence points to the zombie Caroline, especially now that she's been experiencing short term memory loss and an inability to account for her whereabouts. If Valerie plans to clear her best friend's name, she'll have to move fast: someone has dispatched a zombie assassin and Caroline's only hope may rest with a pair of middle-aged head-bangers with a few secrets of their own.

Shade Fright (Valerie Stevens #1)
by Sean Cummings

There’s a malevolent force in town, and it’s quite literally Valerie Stevens’ job to determine who’s behind it and why they want to destroy the city of Calgary. She’ll have help, in the form of her best friend (now more or less a zombie, unfortunately), a powerful dwarf troll, and the ghost of a dead Prime Minister (he goes by ‘Bill’ these days). But that’s not all – Valerie has some tricks up her sleeve and, she hopes, luck on her side. Oh, and her boyfriend, Dave. He drives a dump truck.

Book Review: Lone Wolfe Protector (A Wolfe Creek Novel) by Kaylie Newell

Lone Wolfe Protector (A Wolfe Creek Novel)

Maggie Sullivan is back in Wolfe Creek, determined to find out why her best friend vanished one fog-shrouded night a year ago. But it quickly becomes clear that if the folks in the secluded mountain town know what happened to her friend, they aren't talking.

Seasoned sheriff's deputy Koda Wolfe reluctantly agrees to help this beautiful woman, even as he tries to convince her to leave for her own good. Soon he's compelled to protect Maggie from herself, his family's ancient curse, and a killer who could strike again.

The nights heat up in more ways than one as Maggie and Koda begin a fiery relationship. But as they delve deeper into the disappearance, the eerie woods come alive with secrets bound to tear them apart. And someone is watching their every move.

Maggie Sullivan, riddled with guilt, returns to Wolfe Creek in search of answers to her best friend’s disappearance. She feels she should have done more when it happened and is now doing the only thing she can, returning to the scene of the crime. There she meets Koda Wolfe, a handsome deputy, who agrees to help. In their search for answers, they find each other.

The main storyline was interesting. Maggie, who is your basic girl next door, can’t get over losing her friend and is haunted by what really happened. The small town where the story takes place isn’t overly welcoming. The one person finally willing to help is Koda. He only does so because of his instant attraction to Maggie. Honestly, I can’t understand why as she is painted as a rather a plain Jane. However, Koda finds her beautiful and I guess that’s all that matters.

To add a small twist to the storyline, there also seems to be a legend that surrounds the town and the Wolfe family in particular. I found this part interesting and wish the author had given us more on this topic. As it was, the ending had an unexpected twist, which is always good. However, things were not wrapped up the way I would have liked. It felt like the author would be taking us back to Wolfe Creek soon.

The book was enjoyable but the story lacked some depth. I am assuming that’s because we will find out in later books some of what we were missing here. I would be willing to read on and find out.

The daughter of an English teacher and a freelance writer, I knew I wanted to be a novelist at the tender young age of twelve. Armed with a college ruled notebook and a ballpoint pen, I set out to write my first manuscript, but quit after seven pages to finish my math homework.

Several years and many short stories later, I decided to take another crack at it. My first book, A Death That Lingers released in November 2011 by Beachwalk Press. It was followed by Falling In Danger, Teaching Officer Lonesome and Taming Johnny, all contemporary romances featuring sexy cop heroes. I currently have a list of story ideas that nag me on a daily basis, most of which have a dash of suspense or paranormal to keep me on my toes.

I live at the base of the mountains in Southern Oregon with a very supportive (and handsome) husband, two adorable little girls, two slightly less adorable cats, and a mutt named Pedro. I spend my time reading, writing, cuddling my girls and dreaming of my next novel.
